LETTER FROM FOUNDATION CHAIR Dear Friends, We are excited you've joined us for our 28th Annual Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital Foundation Gala – Resiliency. In the past, our galas have supported areas of pediatric healthcare we are accustomed to learning about – pediatric cardiac care, neonatal intensive care, pediatric cancer and, most recently, our new Children’s Hospital tower. This year’s event is unique for many reasons, because tonight we will make a difference in the unspoken areas of children’s lives, as they battle this pandemic in ways we could never have envisioned. Tonight’s Resiliency Gala strives to reveal the unbearable circumstances some children of the Inland Empire are experiencing – abuse, neglect, depression – made worse by the COVID-19 pandemic. These topics are hard to hear, particularly when children are impacted. As adults, our responsibility is to give voice to silenced children and rise up for their support, not turn away in our discomfort. LETTER FROM ADMINISTRATOR Dear Friends, Welcome to our 28th Annual Loma Linda University Children's Hospital Foundation Gala – Resiliency. We’ve said that word, resiliency, many times this past year so let’s take a moment to consider its meaning. Resiliency is defined as the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties. We all know this past year has been anything but “quick.” In fact, this year has been long and challenging for all of us. However, as adults, we have a responsibility to future generations to be resilient, to lead by example, pull through and continue on. Imagine experiencing the pandemic through the eyes of a child. Now, imagine this same child facing peril in the form of trauma, threats, food insecurity or neglect. The unacceptable reality is children in our communities face tremendous adversity every day and the pandemic has only worsened life for many of them. Tonight, we are coming together to support the whole-child concept of resiliency for children. Our objective is to provide children with the tools they need to recover from stressful events in their childhood, so they can be trusting, curious and brave. We want to equip children to grow up and reach for their longterm goals. Thank you for your participation tonight as we help to shape the future for children who endure extreme circumstances. EMCEE HEATHER FROGLEAR As an announcer for K-FROG radio station, mother to a Children’s Hospital patient and a Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital board member, Heather Froglear is an enthusiastic advocate for pediatric healthcare. Combining her talent and passion, Heather Froglear has helped K-FROG raise more than $5 million to benefit Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital.

PAYGE’S STORY Payge was rushed to LLU Children’s Hospital in July of 2018 after being removed from her home by San Bernardino County Sheriff's deputies. She had been extremely malnourished and neglected. At three months of age, Payge was skeletal looking. “She had a significant yeast infection on her skin under her neck, in her diaper area and legs,” said Melissa Siccama, MD, a forensic pediatrician at Children’s Hospital. “She was very cachectic, meaning she had no subcutaneous fat on her body. You could see her ribs, her sternum — you could see her bones.” Siccama told the deputies that if they had not found Payge, she could have died within several days. “Her case was one of the worst cases that I have ever seen,” Siccama said. Doctors like Siccama and Amy Young-Snodgrass, MD, who specialize in child abuse pediatrics at Children’s Hospital, were committed to Payge’s care and determined to help her survive. After days in the hospital, Payge began to improve and gain weight under the watchful and attentive care of the physicians, nurses and staff. Her recovery was nothing short of miraculous. Now three years old and thriving, Payge is in the loving care of her forever family. Her former foster family adopted her in 2020. Payge’s mother, Dawn Huff, says she loves LLU Children's Hospital and is thankful for the community effort that brought Payge into her family’s life. “I look back at the scrapbook I’ve made of her photos and am shocked to see how tiny and sickly she was,” Dawn says. “She was this emaciated baby so close to death and now she’s going to turn three and is just amazing — her personality, the fighting spirit she has. She’s come so far.”

NEURONAVIGATION: GPS FOR THE BRAIN Each year, LLU Children’s Hospital treats over 1,200 children for neurological disorders and conditions from our region and others across the United States. Nearly one in every five of these patients requires neurosurgery to address their condition or injury, a procedure that demands the most accurate equipment. The brain is the most complex structure in the universe, housing more than 100 billion neurons. Inside the brain is an abundance of eloquent areas containing fragile brain tissue and areas that are sensitive to surgical manipulation. Even more challenging, there are no surface landmarks for safe passage into deep structures, making pediatric neurosurgery a delicate and precarious operation where every millimeter counts. Neuronavigation equipment is critical for helping surgeons perform safe and accurate life-saving brain surgery while preserving brain function. SHIRLEY N. PETTIS AWARD The Shirley N. Pettis Award recognizes outstanding dedication and distinguished service to children. Through their volunteerism and community service, award recipients have demonstrated the desire and motivation to improve the lives of children throughout the Inland Empire. Throughout her career, The Honorable Shirley N. Pettis Thompson was dedicated to improving the status of children, both nationally and in California. After her husband’s passing, she was elected to his seat and served the 37th Congressional District of California in the 94th and 95th Congress. Her commitment was underscored by six years of service as founding chair of the Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital Foundation Board. Under her leadership, the Foundation expanded its membership and increased awareness of children’s issues and needs. In recognition of her commitment and service to LLU Children’s Hospital and in appreciation for her lifelong dedication to improving the quality of life for children, we acknowledge and remember the late Honorable Shirley N. Pettis Thompson through this award.

WALTER’S CHILDREN’S CHARITY CLASSIC Walter’s Children’s Charity Classic has been committed to providing hope and healing to thousands of children in the Inland Empire and beyond for the past two decades. The annual golf tournament event benefiting Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital was founded by Steven and Cathy Kienle, true champions for children who generously give of their time volunteering with several nonprofits and sponsoring numerous charity events throughout the region. Over the past 25 years, Walter’s Children’s Charity Classic has raised more than $5 million for Children’s Hospital. The donations and continued commitment to patients have funded aspects of every unit in the current Children’s Hospital tower, including the cardiac intensive care and neonatal intensive care units, the pediatric intensive care unit, the child abuse protection center and child abuse prevention center, the emergency department, the craniofacial specialty team center, hematology and oncology, acute care, the pediatric diabetes center, and the extra corporeal membrane oxygenation program. Future generations will continue to benefit from Walter’s Children’s Charity Classic’s support in the new Children’s Hospital tower through its funding of a new playroom. Walter’s Children’s Charity Classic has tirelessly continued its mission to benefit the kids at Children’s Hospital with equipment, programs and staff that will make a positive difference in their lives and the lives of their families. In recognition of exemplary service, philanthropy and dedication to improving the lives of children in the Inland Empire, it is an honor to present Walter’s Children’s Charity Classic with the Shirley N. Pettis Award.

NANCY B. VARNER LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD Nancy B. Varner was one of the founding board members of the Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital Foundation in 1992. Her active involvement with the Children’s Hospital included a term as the Foundation’s chair and chairing the inaugural Children’s Hospital Foundation Gala. In recognition of Nancy’s outstanding dedication and distinguished service to children through volunteerism and community service, the Lifetime Achievement Award is now known as the Nancy B. Varner Lifetime Achievement Award. The Nancy B. Varner Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes outstanding dedication and lifetime distinguished service. Through both personal and professional service, the award winner has demonstrated desire, motivation and devotion to improve the lives of others.

DR. LEONARD L. BAILEY OUTSTANDING CLINICIAN AWARD Dr. Leonard L. Bailey was a world-renowned pediatric heart surgeon whose work has given hope to children everywhere. His research and innovations in infant cardiology have helped save thousands of lives around the world. For 42 years, Dr. Bailey guided patients and their families at Loma Linda University Health through some of their most trying times. In honor of his legacy, we renamed our Outstanding Clinician Award to recognize Dr. Bailey’s lifetime of contributions. The Dr. Leonard L. Bailey Outstanding Clinician Award recognizes lifelong dedication and distinguished service provided to children by a clinician at Loma Linda University Children's Hospital. Through their professional career and advocacy, award recipients have demonstrated the desire and motivation to improve the lives of children throughout the Inland Empire.

2020 RECIPIENT OF THE DR. LEONARD L. BAILEY OUTSTANDING CLINICIAN AWARD
RICARDO PEVERINI, MD
Long before he became president of Loma Linda University Faculty Medical Group — an entity comprising nearly 1,100 physicians — Ricardo Peverini, MD, possessed a strong passion for infant patient care and creating mechanisms to enhance care. With a powerful combination of skills, Peverini has served Loma Linda University Health for 32 years and contributed to the organization's mission in profoundly significant ways as a dedicated clinician and pioneering administrator. A native of Uruguay, Peverini came with his family to the United States. Ultimately becoming a physician specializing in neonatology, Peverini’s journey to healthcare started with an interest in numbers and systems. Prior to medical school, he completed a bachelor’s degree in biophysics and mathematics, followed by a master’s degree in computing science. With this foundation, Peverini came to Loma Linda University to study medicine and work as a pediatrics resident with a fellowship in neonatology. He would later earn a master’s degree in medical informatics from Stanford University. Today, colleagues describe Peverini as being ultra-dedicated to his work as a clinician. He is tremendously skilled at deciphering what a sick infant may be experiencing. He also brings a gentle, sympathetic way of helping parents understand what they’re facing and the possible solutions. He frequently stays with patients and their families long into the evening, offering reassurance and a listening ear to help them process their fear. He’s also known as an excellent teacher of his specialty. Beyond his clinical work, Peverini has been a major force in contributing to world-class care in the region. Shortly after becoming division chief of neonatology in 1998, he established two endowments that help support the department’s mission of caring for preterm infants and those with congenital diseases. He also worked to continually improve support to clinicians, using his skills to examine numbers and metrics to consolidate departments and structures, saving money and other resources. Peverini created what was the organization’s first widely-adopted electronic medical charting process, enabling himself and other clinicians to spend more time with patients and their families. Even with the adoption of vendor systems — the implementation of which he led — clinicians still periodically access data from Peverini’s original system and speak highly of its design. For his lifelong dedication and distinguished service provided to his infant patients and to his colleagues at Loma Linda University Health, the Children’s Hospital Foundation is honored to recognize Ricardo Peverini, MD, with the Outstanding Clinician Award.

Robin Diamond-Ward, better known to her listeners as Heather Froglear on K-FROG 95.1 FM, has been a true champion in the community, giving generously of her time and her voice, volunteering with numerous nonprofits throughout the Inland Empire for many years. Robin has firsthand experience with having a child admitted to Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital. In 2005, after Robin and her husband adopted their baby girl Peyton, it was confirmed that Peyton had a congenital heart disease and would require surgery. Peyton was operated on by world-renowned cardiothoracic surgeon, Dr. Leonard Bailey. Robin has since remained a dedicated volunteer for Children’s Hospital and an enthusiastic advocate for pediatric healthcare, providing a voice for children who cannot advocate for themselves. As an on-air personality for K-FROG with a significant following on radio and social media, Robin brings community awareness to many women’s and children’s causes, including congenital heart disease, pediatric oncology, women’s health and women’s cancers. She has helped raise more than $5 million for kids with pediatric cancers through her work with the annual “K-Frogger’s for Kid’s Radiothon.” She proudly sits on the board of Children’s Hospital Foundation, emcees Loma Linda University Health’s Annual Women’s Conference, and has emceed the Children’s Hospital Foundation Gala for many years, helping to raise more than $400,000 through the live auction. In addition to her work as a pediatric and women’s healthcare advocate, Robin dedicates her personal time to emceeing and supporting fundraising for other events such as the Riverside Police Officer’s Association Gala, the American Cancer Society and LifeStream Blood Bank donor celebrations. For her service and dedication to her community, it is an honor to recognize Robin Diamond-Ward with the Hometown Hero Award.
