CONFERRING OF DEGREES

School of Allied Health Professions | Loma Linda, California

Message from the President Congratulations to the Class of 2020. One of the greatest joys experienced by our campus community is the opportunity to celebrate your academic excellence and personal achievements. This 114th commencement season marks the culmination of your study and professional preparation, which has equipped you to meet the next great adventures of your lives. You and those who have supported you are to be commended. Now and for all time, you occupy a place among the alumni of this historic institution. I urge you always to model in your personal and professional life the excellence and vision, the courage and resilience, the passion and compassion that continue to shape and enhance our global reputation and legacy. As you move beyond this weekend to the world of work or the pursuit of advanced degrees, I know that your commitment to our mission and values will be evident as your knowledge and skills are used to “continue the teaching and healing ministry of Jesus Christ—to make man whole.” Now go with confidence wherever your dreams may lead you—questioning, learning, and challenging as you change our world for the better. I wish for you a satisfying and successful journey as you serve in the name and spirit of our gracious God.

Richard H. Hart, M.D., Dr.P.H.

Message from the Dean Class of 2020 – Congratulations. Your perseverance, your dedication, and your commitment have paid off. Some of you have spent a lot of time with us. Three, four, five, sometimes even seven years. Others, maybe not so long. But either way, you have become a part of the School of Allied Health Professions and Loma Linda University family. We are humbled by your trust in us for your education and training, and yet, we send you away glad that you spent the time with us, and looking forward to the impact that you are going to make in health care and in your profession. And so on this special day, we say congratulations and we wish you all of the best.

Craig Jackson

University History Highlights Loma Linda University is part of the Seventh-day Adventist system of higher education that adheres to and promotes its vision—“Transforming lives through education, health care, and research”—and its motto— “To make man whole.” Loma Linda University traces its beginnings back to 1905, when—through a series of divine providences— the University, starting as a nurses’ training school, was founded at Loma Linda, California, by the Seventhday Adventist Church. The School of Nursing began in 1905. In 1909, the College of Medical Evangelists received its charter as a medical school with the express purpose of preparing physicians who could meet the needs of the whole person. Both schools emphasized the need for healthful living as a part of medical care—a revolutionary concept in 1905. The University has steadily expanded its programs to meet the demands of a global environment. The original schools—Nursing and Medicine—have been joined by the Schools of Allied Health Professions, Behavioral Health, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Public Health, and Religion; and the Faculty of Graduate Studies. All the school programs are accredited by their respective accrediting bodies. 1905 1909 1937 1941 1948 1953 1954 1961 1962 1966 1967 1968 1990 1997 2002 2003 2005 2007 2015

Today the original 1905 property is part of an expanding health sciences campus operated under the jurisdiction of Loma Linda University Health—which includes six Loma Linda University-named medical facilities: Medical Center, Children’s Hospital, Medical Center-East Campus, Surgical Hospital, Behavioral Medicine Center, and Medical Center-Murrieta; ten LLUH institutes; three LLUH-related research centers; and various school-related research centers. After more than a century of service, the University remains committed to the vision of its founders and is sustained by its close association with the Seventh-day Adventist Church. The University is recognized as a leader in the field of health sciences education, research, and service—locally and internationally. Through divine providence and guidance, Loma Linda University continues to fulfill its mission: To prepare health professionals to continue the teaching and healing ministry of the Master Teacher and Great Physician, Jesus Christ.

School of Allied Health Professions Candidates for Degrees The listing of a candidate’s name in the commencement program is presumptive evidence of graduation but is not to be regarded as conclusive. The three-letter designation following a student’s name (MAR, SEP, DEC) indicates the month in which the student completed his or her program, if other than May/June.

Ryan Christopher Ziegler—President’s Award B.A. Hawaii Pacific University, 2008 M.A. Loma Linda University SAHP, 2020

Ryan Ziegler is a husband of 12 years, a father of 3 young children, and a Special Forces Medical Sergeant with the California National Guard. During his 12 years in service to this country, he earned three military occupational specialties; he was the Honor Graduate of the Army Airborne School, and the Distinguished Honor Graduate of the Basic Military Mountaineering course. In 2013, he was named 2013 Soldier of the Year for the California National Guard. Nine years ago, Ryan co-founded, Flexfire LEDS, a successful LED distribution company, still operating today; selling his interest in the business a few years later, he set out to pursue his dream of becoming a Special Forces soldier and increase his medical knowledge and experience. After 30 months of grueling training at Fort Bragg, Ryan earned the Green Beret, something achieved only by 20-30% of those that begin this training. Seven months after graduating, Ryan was deployed to Jalalabad Airfield, serving as part of Operation Freedom Sentinel, where he earned the Bronze Star. Upon returning to the United States and being demobilized, Ryan saw major flaws in the medical system for returning soldiers, so he decided to “fix” the problem affecting many returning service members. In Washington D.C., he spoke at a mental health seminar and met with senior officials regarding the demobilization process, and this led to major changes in how soldiers are treated upon return to the United States. The first time Ryan applied to the Master of Physician Assistant program, he was accepted into the waiting list. Years later, while in training and having to conduct the interview via Skype - Loma Linda University (LLU) being the only institution that would allow for this accommodation – he applied again, and was granted acceptance, but shortly after, Ryan was deployed to Afghanistan and had to delay entrance into the program. While in Afghanistan, Ryan sustained injuries that required extended rehabilitation, and once again, he had to delay pursuing his academic dreams. Ryan credits the mission of LLU, “To Make Man Whole,” with providing the framework and freedom for the administrators to support him in his advanced academic pursuits, in spite delays along the way. These experiences fueled Ryan’s desire to become not only a successful student, but also to make the program better for his Veteran classmates, other Veterans in the School, and future Veteran students. While at LLLU, Ryan Ziegler has emerged as a leader and has paved a way for fellow Veterans and military students, and for those who share his interest in these areas. In his first year, Ryan served as a class officer and was elected Constituent Chapter Student Representative. After learning that there was no veteran support organization on campus, Ryan set out to establish the first LLU Veterans and Military Club, knowing firsthand how beneficial the club could be to many students and staff. To date, the LLU Veterans and Military Club has accomplished many valuable tasks and has laid the groundwork for future student success in the School and beyond. The club serves as a place where students in the Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP) can connect, share information, and begin building lasting relationships, allowing for invaluable insights and experiences to be shared between club members. Ryan has already connected current medical school students to a professor that is an HPSP graduate. The club is also actively working with the University to overhaul the University’s Veteran webpages to increase information sharing within the veteran student community for incoming, current, and future students. In the months that this Club has been official, it is amazing the level of engagement in the community and activities that have been accomplished. For his exemplary leadership, initiative, academic distinction, and community service, the School of Allied Health Professions names Dr. Ryan C. Ziegler recipient of the 2020 PRESIDENT’S AWARD. 44

THE GOOD SAMARITAN The Good Samaritan, the four-figure sculpture located on the mall of Loma Linda University, is a representation of the parable told by Jesus in Luke 10:30–37. It was sculpted by Alan Collins and dedicated and unveiled at Loma Linda University on May 31, 1981. The sculpture speaks eloquently of the compassionate practice of the healing arts and of our mission— “to continue the teaching and healing ministry of Jesus Christ”—and of the motto of this health sciences University—“To make man whole.” The Good Samaritan has been incorporated into the diploma as a screened background since 2006.
