MESSAGE
F ROM TH E
FOUNDATION
Dear Friends, Over the past year, we have seen firsthand the importance of a team that is adaptable, supportive and compassionate. I am so grateful that at Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital we have done just that. During the peak of the pandemic, our pediatric clinicians were able to quickly mobilize and assist on adult units as needed. We also cared for over 160 adult patients, ranging from ages 18 to 84, in the children’s hospital. We are grateful to our healthcare heroes for their dedication to provide the highest quality patient care even in the most trying circumstances. Despite the strain of the pandemic, our teams have remained committed to patient safety and quality and have been recognized for both. Last June, LLU Children’s Hospital achieved the prestigious Magnet Designation for nursing excellence and was one of the first hospitals to accomplish this virtually due to the pandemic. In addition to this designation, LLU Children’s Hospital was recognized as a Best Maternity Care Hospital by Newsweek and the Leapfrog Group, and was ranked by U.S. News & World Report among best in the nation for cardiology and heart surgery. Your support enables us to make great strides in expanding access to care for children spanning from the Temecula to Coachella valleys. And while growth continues at our off-site locations, we are thrilled to share that as of August,
our new Children’s Hospital Tower is now open! The new tower features all private patient rooms, a dedicated pediatric emergency department and the San Manuel Maternity Pavilion. Our teams look forward to continuing to provide exceptional patient-centered care in this new space. Thank you for your support that has made our Campus Transformation Project a reality. It is because of you that we can continue to keep the mothers and children of the Inland Empire healing, healthy and happy.
Sincerely,
Peter Baker, J.D., MBA 2021 Senior Vice President and Administrator Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital

CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL EARNS COVETED MAGNET RECOGNITION Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital earned the highest honor of healthcare nursing excellence. Through the hard work and dedication of their nursing teams, the hospital received Magnet Recognition as part of the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s (ANCC) Magnet Recognition Program.
received the prestigious distinction, which recognizes organizations where nursing strategic goals are aligned to improve patient outcomes. Only 9% of the more than 6,000 healthcare organizations in the United States have been evaluated as worthy of this designation.
Sherry Nolfe, RN, MSN, chief nursing officer at Children’s Hospital, said this award speaks to the level of care Children’s Hospital offers this community.
After surveying Children’s Hospital in May 2020, the ANCC Commission on Magnet Recognition voted unanimously on the hospital’s designation.
“The passion our nurses show for patients and for each other truly touches my heart,” Nolfe says. “We feel deeply grateful for each person who contributed to this moment. We know the tremendous teamwork this journey required, and we look forward to working alongside this team as we continue this journey — embracing change, improving patient outcomes and living our mission on a daily basis.” The voluntary credentialing program for hospitals recognizes excellence in nursing and is the highest honor a healthcare organization can receive for professional nursing practice. This is the first time the 343-bed hospital has

DOCTORS SAVE PREGNANT MOM DYING FROM COVID-19 AND HER PREMATURE BABY Blanca Rodriguez met her daughter Jade for the first time separated by a facemask, incubator, tubes and wires — both had been fighting for their lives against COVID-19 just weeks earlier. Blanca continues to express gratitude for the people at Children’s Hospital. “I’m so thankful for my life and my daughter’s life,” she says. The 32-year-old mom from Adelanto, California, was 28 weeks pregnant in July 2020, when she was rushed to Children’s Hospital with severe upper respiratory issues and difficulty breathing. Doctors from both the intensive care unit teams and the obstetrics teams fought against several issues. Blanca tested positive for COVID-19 and had also developed acute respiratory distress syndrome, where fluid gathered in her lungs. The syndrome has a 50% mortality rate in pregnant women. She continued to deteriorate.
6
2020 RESILIENCY / ANNUAL REPORT
Blanca was barely breathing on her own and needing heavy oxygen assistance. Her lungs couldn’t handle the strain of exhaustion from trying to breathe, and her immune system didn’t have enough strength to fight the disease and support her baby’s life. She needed to be intubated and put on a ventilator. Doctors hoped this would allow her body to rest, recover and give her baby time to grow. Minutes before being intubated, Blanca said a tearful goodbye to her family over FaceTime. No one knew what the next weeks, days or even hours would hold, but there seemed to be a certainty that her battle would be uphill. The ICU team placed Blanca into a medically induced coma, intubated her and began working on improving her oxygen intake. However, within hours, Blanca’s baby began to lose oxygen herself and went into distress. Nearly 25 people, including doctors and nurses from the NICU, ICU, labor and delivery, and anesthesia teams crowded

into an ICU room to deliver Blanca’s baby via an emergency c-section while keeping them both alive. Jade was delivered in the early hours of the morning. While Jade didn’t have COVID-19, both she and her mom remained in critical condition. As days went by, Blanca’s miraculous recovery began to unfold. Even though her fever was still at 102, her breathing was improving and her entire demeanor seemed more positive; she was even trying to laugh. That same day, Blanca was taken off the ventilator. She was released from the hospital, finally reuniting with the rest of her family after weeks of isolation and separation. Jade remained under the dedicated and watchful care of the NICU team before finally going home several months later.

A TEENAGER’S NEAR DEADLY CARDIAC EVENT BECOMES SERIES OF MIRACLES It was a seemingly normal September day for the Collins family. They had gathered for a poolside barbecue — a day of fun and relaxation together. Elijah, 16, to his parents’ knowledge leading up to the day of the incident, was a completely healthy teenager. He was hardly ever sick and never needed medical attention. But while swimming laps in the pool, Elijah started seizing. He was quickly pulled from the water and continued seizing. Then, he stopped breathing. Elijah’s dad and uncle took turns performing chest compressions until first responders arrived thirteen minutes later. He was rushed to the Loma Linda University Medical Center – Murrieta. When he arrived at the hospital, Elijah’s mom, Meghan, says it began to seem like Elijah was not going to survive. He had been unresponsive and receiving CPR for nearly 45 minutes. Just minutes before an emergency doctor was about to pronounce Elijah dead, Meghan says one of the nurses prayed out loud for

her son. His heart miraculously jolted back into action. He was airlifted to Children’s Hospital in critical condition.
Elijah Collins, 16, went into cardiac arrest for unknown reasons
she says. “I didn’t know if I was ever going to be able to tell him that again.”
The doctor explained the gravity of the situation to Elijah’s parents. Elijah had gone into full arrest for an undiagnosed cardiac reason, his liver was in shock, and he was in renal failure. His oxygen levels were dangerously low.
Meghan and her husband made the decision to have Elijah placed on ECMO. His room began to be prepped for the procedure. However, the surgeon rushed out to Elijah’s parents to deliver the good news that Elijah’s oxygen had shot up.
“I just remember telling the doctor how scared I was, and he asked if we were believers, which we said we were,” Meghan says. “So he prayed with us, and it’s things like that about Children’s Hospital that we treasure and are so thankful for.”
Elijah remained ventilated for several days. He was put on dialysis for his kidneys, but he never ended up needing ECMO. Elijah’s progress over almost a month at Children’s Hospital continued to amaze the doctors and nurses caring for him.
Because Elijah’s oxygen was so low, doctors started discussing the potential need to place him on ECMO, a machine that adds oxygen to a patient’s blood and pumps it through their body like the heart — and the last resort for life support.
Meghan is thankful for the care Elijah received at Children’s Hospital, specifically from the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) team. “They truly walked with us through it all,” she says. “I would tell other parents that with the PICU team, you can count on being surrounded by people who genuinely love and support you and care about your child.”
“I just remember telling him that I loved him, and he would shake his head yes,”
Months later, Meghan says Elijah is doing well — seemingly back to his normal self. However, the Collins family continues searching for answers about Elijah’s heart. He is still on the road to recovery and will need a lifelong continuance of care. Despite the trauma, Meghan and her family have remained resilient and positive, seeking hope in the miracles and enjoying the blessing of Elijah’s life.

A MOM, HER BABY AND THEIR FAMILY’S STORY OF HOPE AND HEALING AFTER COVID-19 Monica Ramirez awoke alone and confused in an unfamiliar hospital room in late July 2020. “I felt like I had been hit by a train,” she recalls. “Someone opened the shades in my room and I could see buildings and pavilions outside the window. It all seemed so familiar. I saw a sign that said ‘Anderson Street,’ and I knew I was at Loma Linda.” Monica’s last memory was driving to a hospital in Corona and being admitted. At the time, she didn’t know she had COVID-19, she only knew she couldn’t breathe. At 29 weeks pregnant, Monica was in critical condition as her body battled the virus and struggled to support the life of her baby. She was airlifted to Loma Linda University Health, placed in the intensive care unit in a medically induced coma and intubated. Monica says for many years she had joked with her family that they should drop her off on the freeway going through Loma Linda if she was ever sick

days in a rehab center. Now she was finally home.
“Every single person I can, I tell them to go to Loma Linda University Health for care,” she says. “The most important thing is their faith in God, which motivates them to truly care about and help people.”
“I told her I had been praying for her,” Barbara says. “Monica told me that she felt my prayers. We cried on the phone and talked about Emiliana and her progress. I told her that each day I worked, I held her little one for hours because I knew she couldn’t.”
While in the coma, Monica’s water prematurely broke at only 30 weeks. Doctors delivered her tiny daughter, Emiliana, via c-section. She weighed three pounds and six ounces. Monica remained comatose as her body continued to battle the virus, and her heart stopped twice. Barbara Ogilvie, a NICU nurse at Children’s Hospital, became Emiliana’s primary nurse. When she heard the family’s story, she started praying for them every day. Weeks later, Barbara received a phone call on the unit and a woman asked to check on her baby — it was Monica. She had been slowly recovering after spending weeks in the hospital and
When Monica was finally free of COVID-19 and strong enough to come visit the hospital, she held Emiliana in her arms for the first time. Monica and Barbara also met in-person for the first time. They are now like family. “She took care of my baby, nurtured her and gave her everything I couldn’t at the time,” Monica says. “I will be forever grateful. Barbara is an angel.” Emiliana was discharged from the hospital in September. Monica is so thankful — for her life, her healthy baby, her family, and her story of hope and healing.

RESCUED, MALNOURISHED INFANT RECEIVES LIFESAVING CARE AND ADOPTIVE HOME Three-year-old Payge is healthy and living in a loving, adoptive home — a dramatic turnaround after being rescued at age three months from neglect and malnourishment to the point that she weighed only six pounds and appeared skeletal. Dawn Huff, Payge’s adoptive mother, loves Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital for giving Payge lifesaving care and is thankful for the community effort that brought Payge into her family’s life. “I look back at the scrapbook I’ve made of her photos and am shocked to see how tiny and sickly she was,” Dawn says. “She was this emaciated baby so close to death and now she’s going to turn three and is just amazing — her personality, the fighting spirit she has. She’s come so far.” Doctors who cared for Payge told San Bernardino County Sheriff’s deputies that if they had not found Payge, she would have died within several days. Payge was rushed to Children’s Hospital in July of 2018 after being removed from her home by deputies. Payge had been living with her biological parents

in a trailer without water or electricity and sleeping in a urine-soaked car seat, says Morrissa Cardoza, a deputy district attorney for San Bernardino County. “Payge’s dad would actually put alcohol in her bottle to try to get her to go to sleep faster and would also blow marijuana smoke directly into her face because she was fussy and hungry and crying,” Morrissa says. Melissa Siccama, MD, a forensic pediatrician at Children’s Hospital, says Payge’s case was one of the worst she had ever seen and worried she wouldn’t survive. “She had been starved for a period of time,” Dr. Siccama recalls. “She was dehydrated. She had a significant yeast infection on her skin under her neck, in her diaper area, and legs. She was very cachectic, meaning she had no subcutaneous fat on her body. You could see her ribs, her sternum — you could see her bones.” Doctors like Siccama and Amy YoungSnodgrass, MD, who specialize in child abuse pediatrics at Children’s Hospital,
Pediatricians provide lifesaving care for child abuse victims
were committed to Payge’s care and determined to help her survive. After 10 days in the hospital, Payge had improved and gained enough weight under the watchful and attentive care of the physicians, nurses, and staff that she was discharged to a foster family. That family would become her forever home. “I got the call to take in a threemonth-old ‘failure-to-thrive,’” Dawn remembers. “When I first saw her at the hospital, I immediately started to cry because she was so small. All of my foster babies have been failure-to-thrive [cases], but Payge was just so small and so sickly looking.” From the first moment Payge clung to her finger, Dawn wanted Payge as part of their family. “I just knew from that day,” Dawn says. “She just became part of us.” Payge’s adoption was finalized in 2020. Now three years old, Payge is thriving in the loving care of her family.

THE GIFT THAT LASTS A LIFETIME Bertha Jane Nebenzahl, lovingly referred to as Berty, lived a life that impacted so many people. Berty was known for her spirit of volunteerism well into her nineties. In recent years, Berty’s close friend, Dirk Biermann, began bringing her to volunteer events hosted by the Big Hearts for Little Hearts Desert Guild, which supports Loma Linda University Children’s Health – Indio. In one of her final acts of generosity, Berty designated a portion of her estate to benefit Loma Linda University Children’s Health – Indio, and in doing so, will continue her habit of making a difference in the lives of others through this support of countless children and their families.

SHINING STAR
FUNDS
Giving to Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital is a unique way to honor or remember someone close to you while also bringing hope to children in our care. Tribute donors can establish a Shining Star fund in the name of their loved ones. As well as paying special tribute, a shining star fund provides an everlasting way to honor or remember someone. Anyone may contribute to a shining star fund at any time to acknowledge a loss, birthday, anniversary or other special life moments. Gifts to shining star funds further the mission of the Children’s Hospital and help ensure the availability of critical healthcare services for the children. Abigail Power

LIFETIME MEMBERSHIP The Big Hearts for Little Hearts (BHLH) Loma Linda Guild was founded in 1999 with the goal of raising awareness for pediatric services and purchasing lifesaving medical equipment for the patients at Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital. “We all love Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital,” says Dixie Watkins, advisor to the Loma Linda Guild. “We as members know that every dime we raise is being used to help make a sick child better. You won’t find a more dedicated and loyal group.” Their support has made a heartfelt impact on our patients at LLU Children’s Hospital. From preemie diapers that fit in the palm of your hand to breakthroughs in heart surgery, the costs of providing the finest medical care to children is immense – and the needs are urgent. A Lifetime Member pledge to the Big Hearts for Little Hearts Loma Linda Guild will make a difference in the life of a child by providing hope for a happy, healing and healthy future.
