Message from the Dean Congratulations to the School of Nursing Graduating Class of 2020! It is a day to celebrate with your family and friends who supported and encouraged you during your education. You have achieved your personal goal in nursing and are ready now to move forward in your professional life in nursing. The path you take now will be very individual, as fits your personal characteristics and opportunities and as God leads you. There will be decisions and unexpected events in your future as you continue your professional journey. I encourage you to remember the verse, Psalms 32:8, as a professional and personal foundation: (English Standard Version) “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you.” We have the assurance that God is willing to lead us in all we do! As you move forward, please remember that we are proud of you as a Loma Linda University School of Nursing graduates, alumni and as Loma Linda Nurses! Again congratulations and may you know God’s guidance and blessings in all you do.
Elizabeth A. Bossert, PhD, RN

University History Highlights Loma Linda University is part of the Seventh-day Adventist system of higher education that adheres to and promotes its vision—“Transforming lives through education, health care, and research”—and its motto— “To make man whole.” Loma Linda University traces its beginnings back to 1905, when—through a series of divine providences— the University, starting as a nurses’ training school, was founded at Loma Linda, California, by the Seventhday Adventist Church. The School of Nursing began in 1905. In 1909, the College of Medical Evangelists received its charter as a medical school with the express purpose of preparing physicians who could meet the needs of the whole person. Both schools emphasized the need for healthful living as a part of medical care—a revolutionary concept in 1905. The University has steadily expanded its programs to meet the demands of a global environment. The original schools—Nursing and Medicine—have been joined by the Schools of Allied Health Professions, Behavioral Health, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Public Health, and Religion; and the Faculty of Graduate Studies. All the school programs are accredited by their respective accrediting bodies. 1905 1909 1937 1941 1948 1953 1954 1961 1962 1966 1967 1968 1990 1997 2002 2003 2005 2007 2015

Today the original 1905 property is part of an expanding health sciences campus operated under the jurisdiction of Loma Linda University Health—which includes six Loma Linda University-named medical facilities: Medical Center, Children’s Hospital, Medical Center-East Campus, Surgical Hospital, Behavioral Medicine Center, and Medical Center-Murrieta; ten LLUH institutes; three LLUH-related research centers; and various school-related research centers. After more than a century of service, the University remains committed to the vision of its founders and is sustained by its close association with the Seventh-day Adventist Church. The University is recognized as a leader in the field of health sciences education, research, and service—locally and internationally. Through divine providence and guidance, Loma Linda University continues to fulfill its mission: To prepare health professionals to continue the teaching and healing ministry of the Master Teacher and Great Physician, Jesus Christ.

School of Nursing Candidates for Degrees The listing of a candidate’s name in the commencement program is presumptive evidence of graduation but is not to be regarded as conclusive. The three-letter designation following a student’s name (MAR, SEP, DEC) indicates the month in which the student completed his or her program, if other than May/June.

Michelle Justine Corpuz Bonus—President’s Award B.S. California State University San Bernardino 2013 D.N.P. Loma Linda University SN 2020
Since graduating with her bachelor’s degree in 2013, Ms. Bonus has worked as an RN and clinical educator in the pediatric hematology and oncology unit at Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital, serving children and adolescents with cancer and blood disorders. With the goal of giving these children and families excellent care, Michelle earned a specialty certification as a Pediatric Hematology Oncology Nurse, and then set out to pursue the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree, with a focus as a clinical nurse specialist. In addition to her academic work, Ms. Bonus has continued to work full-time and participate in multiple unit and hospital-based committees. Michelle’s faith is an integral part of her life as well. Through her faith in God, she does “not ever feel alone… and can begin each day with optimism and confidence.” As a clinical expert, Michelle identified the need to improve the safety of chemotherapy and biotherapy administration, and developed a novel educational program to improve compliance with safe handling practices of these medications. The title of her DNP Project is: Implementation of a Multimodal Education Bundle to Improve Safe Handling Practices of Hazardous Medication by Inpatient Pediatric Oncology Nurses. For her leadership, intellectual abilities, faith, and commitment to the nursing profession, as well as her leadership and professionalism, the School of Nursing honors Dr. Michelle Justine Corpuz Bonus with the 2020 PRESIDENT’S AWARD.

THE GOOD SAMARITAN The Good Samaritan, the four-figure sculpture located on the mall of Loma Linda University, is a representation of the parable told by Jesus in Luke 10:30–37. It was sculpted by Alan Collins and dedicated and unveiled at Loma Linda University on May 31, 1981. The sculpture speaks eloquently of the compassionate practice of the healing arts and of our mission— “to continue the teaching and healing ministry of Jesus Christ”—and of the motto of this health sciences University—“To make man whole.” The Good Samaritan has been incorporated into the diploma as a screened background since 2006.
