The design stage of this renovation took almost one year to be concluded by the achitect and after my graduation I had the chance to be involved in the direction of the building site and, after a brief period, become independent. The renovation of this XVII century house has been thought and executed trying to keep all the parts of the house that could still evoke the former spirit and be compliant with today's needs. Everthing that has been substituted aim to create a new entity with a clear contemporary character while keeping respectfully a relation with the old parts.

The complexity and uniqueness of this project con be taken as a conditio sine qua non of the site. The city centre of Carpi is articulated around the Piazza dei Martiri built in front of the medieval Castello dei Pio and surrounded by a portico and the cathedral. Behind the castle the former cinema Supercinema 70, strongly damaged by the 2012 earthquake, is the only place with no specific function near this important piazza.

In these conditions within four floors of 1250 sqm each we had to dwell luxury apartment with private car parks and offices. To face the programmatic density avoiding a contact between the parts, we created a third place within the plan. This place is a spine that contains all the vertical connections of the two functions: pipes, structural loads, cores, air and light.

The apartment occupy the highest floors and work as plugs structurally independent, the offices are in the first floor, while the ground dwells the halls, the plant room and the car park.

Every plug/apartment has a courtyard that supplies privat green space and light. Since they are independent, they can be all different. This starting point allowed an excursion on the courtyard, that exists as a reinterpretation in every apartment.
