T
he first arts mixer of the year is set for Friday. The monthly local arts mixer invites local folks to visit art galleries in a casual, self-guided downtown promenade on the first Friday of each month. Home base for the mixer is, as always, A Creative Arts Studio, at 227 W. Oak St. First Friday Denton begins at the studio at 7 p.m. and ends at 10 p.m. The studio’s first musical act is new to the mixer, but not to performing: Dave Coulter and Friends. Afterward, local band and Twilight Tunes alumni Uver returns to perform its blend of rock and acoustic indie. The featured visual artist for the mixer is Linka Behn, a painter who teaches through A Creative Arts Studio. Behn’s work — a mix of whimsy and realism — tends to put figures or faces in the center of the canvas. Other First Friday Denton venues include Oxide Gallery at 211 N. Cedar St. and UNT on the Square at 109 N. Elm St. Oxide features a collection of local art by a number of artists, while UNT on the Square has focused on a retrospective exhibit of work by University of North Texas art faculty member and graphic artist David Blow.

TURN IT UP Best bets for music this weekend
“Smoke One,” featuring CLV, was a smooth drag and puff in the general direction of D. Smiley’s naysayers. The local hip-hop artist just released the whole EP this week. Hip-hop fans can hear some of it live at MacBroadz’s “The I35 Divide,” a jam-packed bill at Hailey’s Club on Wednesday. D. Smiley is the key player in the MacBroadz crew, and the rapper behind the label and production company of the same name. The gig at Hailey’s features Denton’s Pudge, who will perform songs from his first solo record, One of Those Nights, as Pudge well as JLD, Dallas acts Brain Gang and Aeronotiqz and headliners Subkulture Patriots from Austin. What can you expect from The Young Don Appreciation EP? Fat, lazy beats and tight, solid verses that sometimes

enton opera buffs can catch the Metropolitan Opera’s staging of Hector Berlioz’s Les Troyens in The Met: Live in HD series at 11 a.m. Saturday at the local Cinemark movie theater, at 2825 Wind River Lane. The grand opera in five acts sets Virgil’s The Aeneid to music. It retells the story of Dido (Susan Graham, left) and her ill-fated love for Aeneas, and the betrayals in love and war between the Greeks and the Trojans. The production stars Deborah Voigt as Cassandra, Graham as Dido, Bryan Hymel as Aeneas and Dwayne Croft as Coroebus. Tickets for Saturday’s live broadcast, which will not be reprised, cost $24 for adults, $16 for children, $19 for students and $22 for seniors. Not rated, 345 minutes.
OPENING FRIDAY Promised Land (###1/2) Matt Damon stars and co-wrote the script with co-star John Krasinski from Dave Eggers’ story, a modern morality tale about a big company that comes into a small town to entice the residents to sign away their property rights for natural gas exploration and extraction. The town divides with tested loyalties. With Frances McDormand and Rosemarie DeWitt. NOW PLAYING
Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away Tumbling, dancing, high-wire magic, in story form, from the artists of Cirque du Soleil. In 3-D. Rated PG, 91 minutes. — TDMN Django Unchained (##1/2) In Quentin Tarantino’s new tale of wickedly savage retribution, a black man (Jamie Foxx) gets to rewrite Deep South history by becoming a bounty hunter on a killing spree of white slave owners and overseers just before the Civil War. It’s Tarantino at his most puerile and least inventive, with the premise offering little more than cold, nasty revenge and barrels of squishing, squirting blood. Performances by Foxx, Leonardo DiCaprio, Christoph Waltz and Samuel L. Jackson make the film intermittently entertaining. Rated R, 165 minutes. — The Associated Press The Guilt Trip (#1/2) In this lame comedy written by Dan Fogelman and directed by Anne Fletcher, Barbra Streisand and Seth Rogen star as a mother and son traveling together in a cross-country road trip. She talks constantly while he becomes more and more discomforted and annoyed, probably like most of the audience will be. Bad jokes, little chemistry and not much here to admire. Rated PG-13, 95 minutes. — B.A. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (###) Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson returns with J.R.R. Tolkien’s novel starring Martin Freeman as young Bilbo Baggins. Bilbo joins an army of dwarfs and Gandalf the Grey (Ian McKellen) for a long march and multiple battles to prove his bravery. As usual, Jackson

delivers a technically remarkable film, filled with memorable costumes and sets. Rated PG-13, 166 minutes. — B.A. Jack Reacher (####) OK, so maybe Tom Cruise doesn’t exactly resemble the Reacher of British novelist Lee Child’s books, but Christopher McQuarrie’s film moves so fluidly and with such confidence, it’ll suck you in from the start. Besides being a mind teaser, Jack Reacher offers the muscular thrills of a ’70s action flick, including fight scenes and a thrilling, prolonged car chase through the streets of downtown Pittsburgh. With Rosamund Pike, Robert Duvall and Werner Herzog. Rated PG-13, 130 minutes. — AP Les Miserables (###) Tom Hooper (The King’s Speech) directed this big, brassy version of the stage musical with Hugh Jackman playing Jean Valjean, the wanted man followed and persecuted by the obsessive Inspector Javert (Russell Crowe). The film’s production values make the film visually engaging while the music never stops. With Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried, Helena Bonham Carter and Sacha Baron
Cohen. Rated PG-13, 157 minutes. — B.A. Life of Pi (##1/2) Ang Lee directs from Yann Martel’s allegorical novel about a boy, Pi Patel (Suraj Sharma), who travels with his family from India to Canada. A shipwreck lands him in a small boat with a group of zoo animals, all quickly reduced to a tiger. Man and beast coexist, supposedly giving Zen-like life lessons to the boy, who grows into a man (Irrfan Khan) who tells the story in flashback. Moderately entertaining pseudo-spiritual diversion with elaborate but not particularly awe-inspiring special effects. Rated PG, 127 minutes. — B.A. Lincoln (####) This is more a wonky, nuts-and-bolts lesson about the way political machinery operates than a sweeping historical epic that tries to encapsulate the entirety of the revered 16th president’s life. That was a smart move on the part of Steven Spielberg and Pulitzer-winning screenwriter Tony Kushner. Talky and intimate but also surprisingly funny, Lincoln focuses on the final four months of Abraham Lincoln’s life, and Daniel Day-Lewis
inhabits the role fully. With Tommy Lee Jones, James Spader, John Hawkes and David Strathairn. Rated PG-13, 150 minutes. — AP Monsters, Inc. The Disney-Pixar hit returns, now in 3-D. Its groundbreaking computer animation tells the story of a girl named Boo, who finds herself in the scream-processing factory. But the soft and cuddly monsters who work there (voiced by John Goodman and Billy Crystal) turn out to be scared of her. They get over it and help Boo get back to her world. Rated G, 95 minutes. — B.A. Parental Guidance There’s something touching about how hard Billy Crystal and Bette Midler hustle to peddle the threadbare material that makes Parental Guidance a perfectly tolerable, if uninspired, moviegoing experience. Artie Decker (Crystal), despondent over losing his longtime gig as “De Voice of the Fresno Grizzlies,” and his wife, Diane (Midler), have been recruited to baby-sit their daughter Alice’s (Marisa Tomei) three kids when she and her tech-geek husband Phil (Tom Everett Scott) get a last-minute opportunity to have some out-of-
town alone time. Rated PG, 104 minutes. — The Hollywood Reporter Rise of the Guardians A very odd assortment of mythical childhood figures — Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, the Sandman and Jack Frost — are thrown together as an unlikely set of action heroes in DreamWorks Animation’s attractively designed but overly busy and derivative mishmash of kid-friendly elements. Jack (voiced by Chris Pine) is hard-pressed by a muscular Santa, known as North (Alec Baldwin), to join in the battle against a diabolical figure (Jude Law) who threatens to throw Earth into darkness and provide nightmares to kids everywhere. Rated PG, 97 minutes. — THR Skyfall (###1/2) Daniel Craig returns as James Bond in the 23rd film based on 007’s exploits. Britain’s MI6 comes under attack, with M (Judi Dench) as the chief target. Bond finds and brings back the villain (Javier Bardem), but that just sets the stage for further action and adventure. Between the action sequences, director Sam Mendes

Notes on a manhunt
By Boo Allen Film Critic
Everyone knows how Zero Dark Thirty ends. It’s hard to imagine that many Americans, or many people anywhere, do not know that Osama bin Laden is dead. Regardless, Oscar-winning director Kathryn Bigelow executes a masterly job of presenting the behind-the-scenes operation of what led up to bin Laden’s disposal in the celebrated military maneuver in Abbottabad, Pakistan. Zero Dark Thirty takes itself so seriously, it sometimes bogs down in minutiae — does it add anything, and do

Boal’s screenplay, a work put into production remarkably fast for an industry that is often quick to capitalize yet slow to act. The story follows the CIA career of Maya (Jessica Chastain), who joins the agency not long after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and is assigned to its bin Laden unit. As her reward, she travels to such exotic garden locales as Pakistan and almost always to so-called “black spots,” places where prisoners are beaten and tortured for information. Fans bounce beach balls filled with glitter in the crowd during the Dum Dum Girls’ set at 35 Denton last year.
on’t you love this very moment of the new year? That micro-sliver of time before university and public school classes resume and the phenomenon that is spring in Denton attacks your calendar? We do, too. There aren’t too many patches of downtime in Denton to consider what we should put into our calendars. But we’re doing that now, and we’ve come up with some must-see, must-do events that you should ink in that planner in red — or enter into that latest calendar app on your smartphone. We’ve included events for young and old — so there’s no use in shrugging off our best bets of spring as something for the “kids.” — Lucinda Breeding
Thin Line Film Fest G Feb. 8-18 At the Campus Theatre, 214 W. Hickory St. Pass prices to be announced. www.thinlinefilmfest.com.
Texas’ only documentary film festival surged in attendance last year. It also got press from the film and entertainment press outside of the United States. This festival could be deemed “the little festival that could.” Why? Because the event screens documentaries that make the short list for the Academy Awards each year. It’s broad in its offerings, usually serving up titles that deal with everything from gay and lesbian
issues to questions of faith — and everything in between. And the film festival is manageable. It doesn’t have the gridlock or paparazzi bait of Sundance or Cannes (neither of which limits its films to documentaries) but it does show off the city to newcomers and repeat customers. You can splurge for an all-festival pass, which usually costs more than $100 (but less than $200). Or you can

Ladies, have you been longing to break out the long strand of pearls, or try out the to-die-for finger waves made famous by the likes of 1920s-era actress Mary Pickford? Check out the Denton Benefit League’s “All That Jazz,” a Great Gatsby-styled charity ball in March.
35 Denton announced a good chunk of the local music festival’s major lineup last year: Sleep, Chelsea Light Moving (Thurston Moore, y’all), Killer Mike, the Coathangers and more. Lots more. This music festival always occupies the week before spring break (which is code for South by Southwest in Austin) and is good for three major things: celebrating music, discovering music you’ll swear you can’t believe you lived without, and being utterly chipper in
spite of the three hours of sleep you’ll be getting over four days. Like the Thin Line Film Fest, 35 Denton is manageable. The primary venues are small — very small — and the main stages are cleverly located for thousands who will stand, dance and bounce for entire shows. Oh, and for those who continually find themselves yearning for the days of Fry Street Fair, listen up: Denton’s Brutal Juice is playing. And so is the local punk wunderband Mind
Spiders. We have our bets on a lot more local music getting added to the festival calendar. And in case you were wondering: Yes, the Denton-based Tejas Storytelling Festival will stage the Texas Storytelling Festival on the same four days that 35 Denton fills downtown with music — again. Even with the talent, narrative craftsmanship and charm to be found at the storytelling festival, we’re going to predict that the crowds will skip it for the music.

Denton Benefit League exists to serve three purposes: stimulating volunteerism in Denton County nonprofit agencies and groups, supporting local nonprofit organizations and grooming the women who will lead the community in the future. Each spring, the league stages Denton’s only charity
ball. This year, “All That Jazz” will revisit the 1920s, putting on the fashions made famous by The Great Gatsby. The event will be dressed up in art deco finery and will flirt with the speakeasy danger of Prohibition. Patrons are welcome to dress in flapper-style finery for the black-tie event. Music will be by Emerald City, Denton pianist Bob Rogers and additional performers. It includes dinner, a cash bar, a raffle and a silent auction.

The Adkins String Ensemble, a group of family members born and bred in Denton and many of whom have plum seats in Dallas’ premiere ensembles, will perform a Distinguished Alumni Recital in the spring at the University of North Texas. The ensemble brings even the most familiar string repertoire to life with sensitivity and articulation. Where other groups might fall into rote recitation, going on autopilot on their instruments, the Adkins clan explores its music as if with fresh eyes and fingers. Humor, wit, lyricism and beauty all arise from a concert with the Adkinses.

The Adkins String Ensemble will perform in April at the University of North Texas. The ensemble is Elisabeth Adkins and Alexandra Adkins Wenig on violin, Christopher Adkins and Anthony Adkins on cello, and Clare Adkins Cason
and Madeline Adkins on violin and viola. Pianist Edward Newman is the sole nonAdkins of the ensemble, but is essential as its accompanist.
