U
ver is Fritz Schwalm’s middle name. To be precise, it’s Uwe, but the Denton musician named his solo project Uver as a tip of the hat to a family friend’s pronunciation of his middle name. Schwalm launched his solo project in 2004 and occasionally recruits other musicians for shows around town. Uver will perform during the First Friday Denton mixer at A Creative Art Studio, 227 W. Oak St. in downtown. Artist Greg Colin will be available to do portrait sketches during the evening, and locals gather for art, music, wine and refreshments. “We play mostly originals, but for this solo acoustic appearance, I’m doing half and half — originals and covers,” Schwalm said. Uver’s covers range from Modern English to Lynyrd Skynyrd. “I’m interested in songs emphasizing emotional content versus technical musicianship,” Schwalm said. “[For] example, I perform a cover of ‘First Time Ever I Saw Your Face,’ made into a hit by Roberta Flack. It’ll fall into a vat of cheese if not performed

where vocals and guitar blend as evenly as I can blend them,” Schwalm said. “I’ll play two 50minute sets and leave plenty of ambient room for people to comfortably be able to converse and mingle and check out Robin’s cool studio.”

hris Welch said Pinebox Serenade got its start in 2003 as an acoustic trio devoted to bluegrass and American folk. The band now weighs in with a much meatier sound, thanks to the tastes and influences of seven musicians. “Over time, we’ve grown into more of a rock band, really,” said Welch, the band’s guitarist and singer. “We mainly have acoustic rock sound. It’s kind of weird, Chris Ott [the band’s lap steel player and cellist] is kind of a metal head. He’s also classically trained on the cello. It might sound strange, but when you think about it, metal and classical music have something in common.” Pinebox hasn’t had a Denton show in a while. The group performs Friday at Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studios, with West End Motel and Fiend Without a Face. Pinebox Serenade released its self-titled debut in 2005 on Hot Link Records. Three years later, the band released Let the River Take Them Home on Devil’s Ruin Records. Welch said a third

album is being mixed, and the band is shopping for a new label. Welch said the band hasn’t announced a release date for the upcoming record. “On the latest album, we have a big rock sound. We actually kind of go over the top,” Welch said. “We’re using a bigger arrangement of strings. We’re still writing songs the same way we used to. We’re still writing folk songs.” Welch said the next album was planned as a more oldfashioned album, a throwback to when bands put music on vinyl. “We didn’t want it to be a bunch of singles,” he said. “We wanted it to be an album, something that you can listen from start to finish. I love albums. I love experiencing music like that.” The members of Pinebox Serenade — Welch and Ott, Patrick Newkirk on mandolin and vocals, Holly Manning on violin, Jeff Barnard on drums, Tyler Adams on bass and Nick

Pinebox puts lots of rock into its folk Foreman on banjo and accordion — are just like other busy Denton bands. The group lends its personnel to other bands, and few of them are folk outfits. “Pinebox is an amalgamation of all these things we’re involved in,” Welch said. “It’s a little bit of indie rock, a little bit of the blues, a little bit of metal, a little bit of punk. It’s all those things.” The stage is different from the studio for the band, Welch said. While the studio is a place where musicians can experiment and master the details, live shows are about a give-and-take with the audience, and following the whims of the music as it happens. “I’ve had fans from other countries e-mail us and tell us that they watched us on YouTube.com, and that they’d love to see us live after hearing our recordings. There’s a difference,” he said. Details: Doors at Rubber Gloves open at 8 p.m. Friday. Cover is $8 for ages 21 and older, $10 for ages 18 to 20. The venue is located at 411 E. he patio at Sweetwater Grill & Tavern is packed. Live jazz emanates from the small stage in the back corner. Under the glow of cheery colored lights strung across the ceiling, an attentive, mostly middle-aged crowd listens and applauds after every solo. The band plays a rendition of “All Blues,” a jazz standard by Miles Davis. The saxophonist begins the laid-back waltz with a sound like creamy peanut butter. The other musicians pay close attention to his every nuance and adjust accordingly. Next, the drummer steps up for a tasty riff before passing to the bass player. The room gets quiet as the lowest voice takes the lead. As the sax player leans back on his stool, the drummer keeps a soft and steady beat and the keyboard player, hunkered over his electronic instrument, looks up from under his ball cap, lending support with the occasional harmony until it’s his turn. Like a conversation, each musician has his say and then recedes into the mix. Altogether, they form what jazz musicians call “a groove” — the meeting of their musical minds. Yet every tune, every time, is different. These seasoned players settle into the right “feel” with ease. Three of them are retired professors from the University of North Texas, home to one of the most renowned jazz programs in the world, and their many years on the faculty contributed to that fact. Jim Riggs came to UNT in 1969, where he taught both classical and jazz saxophone, conducted the Two O’clock Lab Band and was named a regents professor. Ron Fink joined the staff in 1964 as the school’s first full-time percussion teacher and remained on the faculty until 2001. Grammy-nominated composer Neil Slater, former chairman of the Division of Jazz Studies, conducted the One O’clock Lab band until he retired in 2008. All continue to perform in the Dallas area. With the addition of a bass player, they are now known as the Sweetwater Jazz
Quartet and perform at the eponymous venue on the second Tuesday night of every month. “The quartet’s founding came about while the three of us — Riggs, Slater and me — were having a beer at Sweetwater,” Fink said. “Jimmy Meredith [one of the restaurant owners] said that since we were retired, we should form a jazz group.” That was in September 2008. “We played our first Sweetwater gig two years ago in October,” Fink said. They added a bass player, Jeffrey Eckels, now on the faculty of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. “We liked it, the audience liked it, Jimmy was pleased and it became the start of something good for jazz.” “The first time they played here, we thought, ‘How lucky can you get?’” said Karen Meredith, Jimmy’s wife and co-owner of Sweetwater Grill & Tavern. The group committed to play once a month and chose Tuesday since it’s typically a slow night for both jazz musicians and restaurants. “It’s one of my loves to be able to do this,” said Jimmy Meredith. “It’s just evolved.”

The Merediths knew Slater and Riggs from years ago, when the One and Two O’clock Lab Bands performed on campus at the Rock Bottom Lounge in the UNT Union, where Jimmy Meredith was food director. “They were digging it back then,” Riggs recalled. “They loved it. I remember how he [Jimmy] was up there having the time of his life.” Despite the city’s reputation for having great jazz because of the university’s strong jazz program and the success of the Denton Arts & Jazz Festival, there have been few dedicated off-campus spaces for live jazz in Denton. The music stopped at Rick’s, a club on Avenue A, after a fire shut it down, and for a brief time the bar inside what was the Radisson hotel occasionally hosted jazz groups. Currently the only local venues that regularly host jazz performers are Sweetwater, the Greenhouse Restaurant and Cafe Du Luxe. “The economy is tough, and clubs do not want to pay for entertainment,” Fink said, adding that bands often only play for the door cover or tips. “Denton has more musicians per capita probably than most other places in the country. … They almost [just] play for exposure or experience,” Fink said. “It is easy for clubs to get bands for little or nothing at all. Sweetwater is the island in the oasis, and we are grateful for what they do. They use quality players and entertainment.” For the past five years, the Merediths have hosted a Fat Tuesday Mardi Gras celebration at Sweetwater. Ron Fink provided the Vintage Jazz Society band, which was the Texas bistro’s only regular music for years. Through Dan Mojica, owner of Dan’s Silverleaf, they became involved with last year’s North by 35 Music Conferette and hosted performances on the patio. They’ve also provided the space for Miss Polly and Her Tiny Big Band and the classical Argyle Wind Quintet. But Jimmy Meredith had a vision. Karen recalls her husband saying, “I really want this

The Sweetwater Jazz Quar-
tet mainly plays a combination of classic ’50s and ’60s jazz, the American Songbook and original charts written by Slater. UNT music professors Brad Leali, a saxophone player, and bassist Fred Hamilton and their bands play more progressive jazz. Le Not So Hot Klub du Denton, a band of area musicians, plays mostly swing jazz, gypsy music and silly songs, and Mi Son Mi Son Mi Son, one of the more recent additions to the Tuesday night lineup, plays Latin dance music. The N’Awlins Gumbo Kings play New Orleans-style jazz. Local artists who perform often at Sweetwater include Drew Phelps, bass; Mario Cruz, saxophone; and singer Gayle Cruz. “The first time we played
here, I wasn’t sure if this was the kind of music that would really go over. I wasn’t convinced,” Fink said. “But after opening night and another month and another month, people were really seeming to enjoy it and kept coming back. They would tell me they really like what were doing. They loved jazz.” The audience is as varied as the music. On any given night, the chairs are filled with a combination of professionals, laborers, city officials, teachers and students. “I think there are a lot of intelligent listeners in here, and that’s much different than just playing a regular gig anywhere,” Slater said. “Denton is a remarkable place,” said David Kanally, who drives to Denton from Coppell to hear the Sweetwater Jazz Quartet perform. “There is as much talent in the audience at Sweetwater’s on a second Tuesday as there is on the stage.” The Sweetwater Jazz Quartet will perform at Sweetwater Grill & Tavern from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday with bassist Lou Carfa, who joined the group last September. There is no cover charge; however, patrons may support the restaurant by arriving hungry and thirsty for more than music. ELLEN RITSCHER SACKETT can be reached at 940566-6845. OPENING FRIDAY
Country Strong While recuperating at a rehab facility, country-music superstar Kelly Canter (Gwyneth Paltrow) takes a romantic interest in musician Beau Hutton (Garrett Hedlund). Kelly includes Beau in her plans as she prepares for a comeback tour orchestrated by her manager husband, James (Tim McGraw), who also has a protege (Leighton Meester) he is grooming for stardom. Rated PG-13, 117 minutes. My Dog Tulip (###) Uniquely charming yet bittersweet animated story of a lonely British man and his inseparable bond with his rambunctious Alsatian dog over the course of more than a decade. The handdrawn images by directors Paul and Sandra Fierlinger are playful and imaginative, even when the narrative (based on a memoir by J.R. Ackerley) becomes mundane. Dog lovers probably will gain the most from a film that is both silly and poignant. Narrated by Christopher Plummer. Not rated, 81 minutes. At the Fort Worth Museum of Modern Art. — Todd Jorgenson Season of the Witch A knight returning from the Crusades (Nicolas Cage) finds Europe ravaged by the Black Plague. When he and his friend, Felson (Ron Perlman), are ordered to take an accused witch to a remote abbey to destroy her powers, they realize that their prisoner is no ordinary girl, and evil forces await them at their destination. Rated PG-13, 95 minutes. Somewhere (##) The latest pretentiously offbeat effort from director Sofia Coppola (Lost in Translation) is a sort-of Hollywood insider piece about a box-office star (Stephen Dorff) who gets caught up in the bad-boy lifestyle until he is given a wake-up call when he's forced to care for his young daughter (Elle Fanning). That's pretty much it. There's no profound insight into the pitfalls of fame or into being the daughter of a Hollywood legend, something the filmmaker should know about. Rated R, 97 minutes. At the Magnolia. — T.J. Terribly Happy (###1/2) Dark, lowkey Danish thriller, which seems to take some cues from classic Westerns and early Coen brothers films, tells of a cop who is transferred from Copenhagen to a job as a small-town marshal following a nerv-

Blank and ‘Blue’ Gosling) and Cindy (Michelle Williams) have a young daughter, as well as an ominously missing dog. Their relationship has obviously hit trouble. Dean, a house painter, comes off as flaky and irresponsible. His charm seems to have evaporated in the eyes of Cindy, who has obviously tired of his childish ways.
So, flash back some six years when they meet at a Pennsylvania assisted-living facility. Their cute meeting suggests why she would initially be attracted to him. He then pursues her in all the quaint customs of movie males. Since their future has already appeared, they obviously have spent about six years together, a period left mostly blank. But the gap also leaves out the needed perspective on how they arrived at their present conditions. Due mostly to the noted Method acting used by the two principals, the physical transformations ring true: In their ending periods, they both
appear pudgier, more louche than in their earlier incarnations. Williams and Gosling give authentic performances, but even they cannot fill in what has been left out of the story and script. Cianfrance adequately creates his appropriate settings and milieu, giving the early scenes of the relationship a little more color and vitality, as opposed to the drab, naturalistic rendering of the latter period. But, all along, you get the feeling that more attention has been paid to artifice than to personal understanding. DR. BOO ALLEN is an award-winning film critic for the Denton Record-Chronicle.

This appallingly stupid insult to Jonathan Swift contains adolescent humor and primitive special effects, and should appeal only to toddlers. If that. Rated PG, 87 minutes. — B.A. Little Fockers (##) This third entry in the Meet the Parents series ranks as the dumbest of all, a dubious achievement. This time, Jack Byrnes (Robert DeNiro) has health problems and wants to make sure his son-in-

Blue Valentine is an often insightful dissection of the rise and fall of a relationship. It is a real portrait, acutely chronicling the pain that drags down everyone connected to the relationship — even the viewers. Derek Cianfrance directs this close-up look at what happens when the love, and the spark, are gone. He co-wrote the script with Joey Curtis and Cami Delavigne. It is not new cinematic territory, and Cianfrance’s main contribution seems to be little more than a few perceptive observations and some creative editing. When first seen, Dean (Ryan ous breakdown, where his big-city instincts clash with some of the locals. It's both a deadpan modern noir and a morality tale with plenty of compelling plot twists too juicy to reveal, along with some sinister characters who aren't what they seem. Not rated, 102 minutes.
