n 2004, actor Jason Lee discovered Midlake, a Denton indie rock band with a mild British prog-rock pastiche. Ten years later, Lee considers himself a friend of the musicians (they return the favor) and is now the producer of Eric Noren’s documentary about the band. Midlake: Live in Denton, TX is a 90-minute concert film peppered with footage of Denton, its landmarks and residents. The documentary will open Thin Line, a fiveday documentary film, music and photography festival, on Feb. 18. Festival director Josh Butler said Texas Filmmakers — the core group that organizes and presents the fest — has been a fan of Midlake as long as Jason Lee. Texas Filmmakers launched the festival in 2004. Then Midlake popped up at another festival. “We compiled Denton films to screen at North by 35 in 2006 — there were a couple Midlake music videos in that reel,” Butler said. “I’ve known the documentary was in the works, and from the beginning I’ve hoped and prayed that Thin Line would get the honor. When [Midlake singer-guitarist] Eric Pulido texted me this fall about doing a screening, I did a little happy dance.” Over the last five years, the opening night at Thin Line has drawn increasing crowds. Butler has opened the festival with music-oriented documentaries before, and has scored big and eager crowds. Troubadours, a documentary about the famous singer-songwriter venue in Manhattan and its 1960s golden age, opened the festival in 2011. “I really wanted to screen it at the festival for max effect, and opening night just seemed right,” Butler said. “Last year we went hyper-local with When We Were All Broncos, and it was great.” Midlake: Live in Denton, TX couldn’t get more local. Noren lugged a pair of cameras to the mecca of Denton music, Dan’s Silverleaf. The band had a date to promote its latest album, Antiphon, not long after its November 2013 release. Lee said Bella Union’s Simon Raymonde, an English record producer and guitarist of the Cocteau Twins, introduced him to Midlake’s music. Specifically, the band’s 2004 debut record, Bamnan and Slivercork. Lee, who communicated in an email round-robin with Pulido, said he like the band’s “sound, feel and how unique that first record was. Reminded me of Grandaddy a bit but more whimsical.” Lee’s ear was pretty keen, as it turns out. Former Midlake frontman Tim Smith cited Grandaddy as a major early influence for the band, along with Radiohead and Jethro Tull. (Midlake would eventually share the stage with Grandaddy’s Jason Lytle under the temporary moniker Grandlake at 35 Denton
music festival in 2012.) Fandom eventually led to friendship, starting at Austin’s South by Southwest music festival. “I met them at SXSW in ’04 and then we all became friends. Good people make for good friends,” Lee said. Collaboration wasn’t far behind. Lee said he first came to Denton that same year to direct the music video for “Balloon Maker,” a single from Bamnan. The idea to do something more substantial grew out of that, he said. That, and the tie both he and Midlake had to Noren, who directed a video release for Lee’s Stereo Skateboards company, which included Midlake’s music. “It might have been Pulido’s idea?” Lee said, casting around for the person who suggested something more than a three-minute video. “Anyway,” he said, “after the long friendship and all the great and very collaborative years behind us, it made sense to do something big.” Butler said the movie is straightforward: a concert documentary broken into chapter-like bits by images of Denton. “There’s pretty much no dialogue,” Butler said. “It’s all them performing at Dan’s, and then intercut with footage of Denton.” “It only took us four days to film, maybe three,” Lee said. “The concert was essentially one long take bouncing back and forth between two Red cameras. It’s more about the images and music.” The documentary premiered at England’s Glastonbury Festival, and made its North American premiere two months ago at CMJ Music Marathon in New York City. In an interview before the holidays, Butler said he was excited not just that Midlake: Live in Denton, TX would screen on the first night of the fest, but that Lee would attend. A question-and-answer session with Lee, Noren and Pulido will follow the screening. Lee said the documentary is tribute, not marketing, for a band that doesn’t deal in the conventions of pop-rock of the present. “It’s just me paying my respect to a great band from a very cool town,” he said.
