Author and illustrator Anita Lobel says that when she creates a book, she treats it as a play. Her work All the World’s a Stage, which is on display at the Center for the Visual Arts, includes the masks of comedy and tragedy.

Page and ‘Stage’ T he Greater Denton Arts Council continues the Meadows Gallery exhibition “All the World’s a Stage: Anita Lobel” through Jan. 18. The exhibit at the Center for the Visual Arts features Lobel’s considerable talents as an award-winning children’s book illustrator (she received Caldecott honors for On Market Street). The exhibit is named for one

of Lobel’s books, and for her approach to planning illustrations. Lobel develops characters and actions as if her pages were the storyboards for a play. The illustrator connects with readers through her deliberate styles, each project yielding art in the tone and spirit of the narrative. The exhibit features illustrations from the 2003 children’s biography of William Shakespeare, All the World’s a

It’s Tarantino at his most puerile and least inventive, with the premise offering little more than cold, nasty revenge and barrels of squishing, squirting blood. Performances by Foxx, Leonardo DiCaprio, Christoph Waltz and Samuel L. Jackson make the film intermittently entertaining. Rated PG-13, 166 minutes. — B.A. Jack Reacher (####) Clever, well-crafted and darkly humorous, Jack Reacher features one of those effortless bad-ass performances from Tom Cruise that remind us that he is indeed a movie star. OK, so maybe Cruise doesn’t exactly resemble the Reacher of British novelist Lee Child’s books, but Christopher McQuarrie’s film moves so fluidly and with such confidence, it’ll suck you in from the start. Besides being a mind teaser, Jack Reacher offers the muscular thrills of a ‘70s action flick, including fight scenes and a thrilling, prolonged car chase through the streets of downtown Pittsburgh. With Rosamund Pike, Robert Duvall and Werner Herzog. Flash, bang and bravado By Christy Lemire AP Movie Critic

Gangster Squad, a pulpy, violent tale of cops and mobsters in 1949 Los Angeles, rides an uncomfortable line between outlandishness and outright parody, and it’s difficult to tell which is director Ruben Fleischer’s intention. Which is a problem. While the film wallows in period detail and has some sporadic moments of amusing banter, it’s mostly flashy, empty and cacophonous, and it woefully wastes a strong cast led by Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone in barely developed, one-note roles. At its center is a performance from Sean Penn as mob king Mickey Cohen in which he doesn’t just chew up the scenery, he rolls it around in his mouth like a handful of marbles, then spits it back out again and blows it to bits with a Tommy gun for good measure. With his mashed-up boxer’s mug, thick Brooklyn accent and volatile bursts of anger, he’s as cartoony as a Dick Tracy villain. While Gangster Squad certainly has its intended moments of humor, the laughs Penn’s performance prompts

Gangster Squad Rated R, 113 minutes. Opens Friday.

might not have been part of the plan. Or maybe they were — who knows? The script from former Los Angeles police homicide detective Will Beall, based on the book Gangster Squad by ex-Los Angeles Times writer and editor Paul Lieberman, focuses on a time of flux in the city after World War II. Gang control of crime, cops and politicians had spread to the West Coast from places like New York and Chicago. Cohen had everyone of importance in his pocket and was on the verge of expanding his reach even further with a power play that would give him a piece of every wire bet placed in the Western half of the U.S. The gruff and grizzled police chief (a gruff and grizzled Nick Nolte) realizes the only way to conquer Cohen is to fight by his rules — that is, by no rules

at all. So he asks Sgt. John O’Mara (Brolin), a principled, heroic war veteran, to put together a band of outsiders to destroy his empire without serving warrants or making arrests. His sidekick is the initially reluctant Sgt. Jerry Wooters (Gosling, chain smoking and speaking in a weird, whispery voice), who prefers booze and women to trouble. Nevertheless, he makes the mistake of getting involved with Mickey’s moll, the classy, wannabe-star Grace. Stone is gorgeous with her wavy red locks, glam makeup and sexy gowns, but there’s not much to her besides looking good, which is a huge waste of Stone’s vibrant presence (not to mention the Crazy Stupid Love reunion she shares with Gosling). The rest of the team consists of tried-and-true types, each of whom gets a one-liner here or there: the folksy, old-school gunslinger (Robert Patrick), the nerdy tech guru (Giovanni Ribisi) and — most dismayingly — the token black and Hispanic members, played by Anthony Mackie and Michael Pena, respectively. Seriously, that’s all they’re given to work with,

‘Gangster Squad’ makes noise, not much else and these are charismatic actors ordinarily capable of great command. (If you want to see Pena in a far superior movie about LA police officers, check out last year’s End of Watch.) Gangster Squad was supposed to have come out last year, as well, featuring a climactic shootout in which gangsters fire automatic weapons from behind a movie screen at Hollywood’s historic Grauman’s Chinese Theatre. After the July shooting at a showing of The Dark Knight Rises that left 12 people dead in Aurora. Colo., that scene had to be removed, which required extensive reshoots and a release-date change from September until now. Still, you shouldn’t expect a kinder, gentler film. Gangster Squad is brutal, with a barrage of gunfire that becomes deafening and, ultimately, boring. The sheer volume of these gun battles, often depicted in stylized slo-mo or with quick blasts of light, undermines the significance of who’s going down and what’s at stake. In the end, who lives and who dies doesn’t really matter. It’s all just noise disguised as entertainment.

Band revives Herb Alpert’s brassy sound

By Lucinda Breeding | Features Editor

t’s about 6:45 on a Tuesday night. The place is Dan’s Silverleaf. The band is A Taste of Herb. The seven-piece band is in the pocket, and the music is cooking. And the people crowded around tables, at the bar and along the back wall are nodding along to the tribute band’s version of “Rise.” It’s one of the most famous songs Herb Alpert recorded. And it’s one of the few Alpert solo songs the band plays.

Denton Record-Chronicle/David Minton

By the time A Taste of Herb picks up its second set Tuesday at Dan’s Silverleaf, the sun has set and the bar is bustling. The band includes, from left, Paul Slavens on keyboard, Joe Cripps on percussion, Tex Bosley on drums and trumpet player John Weir. Bassist Ross Schodek, far right, keeps the rhythm. The tribute band’s name riffs on the song “A Taste of Honey,” a popular cover by Herb Alpert’s Tijuana Brass.

“I’ve never played in a tribute band before,” said trumpet player John Weir, who divides up Alpert’s smooth, fluent brass work with resident Grammy winner Danny O’Brien, best known for his work in Brave Combo. The band plays music mostly from Alpert’s time with the Tijuana Brass, a corps of brass men who could do an honest-to-God mariachi flourish without losing cred when the music called for jazz. “I’m from Arkansas, and Joe [Cripps] is from Arkansas,” said Weir, waiting on a beer after the band’s happy hour set. “I met Joe one night when I went to see this band called Mi Son, Mi Son, Mi Son. I ended up sitting in with them.” Mi Son, Mi Son, Mi Son is a popular Denton Cuban band, and Weir showed off his trumpet skills at the gig. A Taste of Herb grew out of the gig, with Cripps doing much of the connecting. The tribute band honors music executive, singer and trumpeter

Herb Alpert, but puts its own spin on the catalog. There’s guitarist Robert Hokamp’s funky-cool rhythm and lead guitar work, and Paul Slavens’ shape-shifting keyboards (Slavens can give it the Tin Pan Alley treatment on “Spanish Flea” and then take it to slicked-back town, lounge-hot, in “Rise.”) Revered local drummer Tex Bosley can be grooving along in the proverbial pocket and then go all pop-rock on his bandmates. O’Brien couldn’t seem more relaxed in this collection of true blue players, and is occasionally kind of bashful when a quick-licking phrase elicits hoots and whistles from the audience. “It’s funny how disorganized we are,” O’Brien cracks as he packs up his horn. “But it seems to work for us.” Maybe “disorganized” is O’Brien’s code for “playing the set list as we go.” The sound at Dan’s Silverleaf is See HERB on 12

Cripps and Bosley play a rhythmic pingpong game before volleying to Hokamp and bassist Ross Schodek, who slip the song down to its sexier, baritone pulses. Slavens scats along on the keys until Weir and O’Brien take it away. “Our whole idea was to arrange songs by the Tijuana Brass for the group, and maybe do a few of Herb’s solo pieces,” Weir said. “Herb’s sound is this beautiful sound. It’s very simple, very beautiful sound.” Alpert brought the trumpet to a pop-rock audience during

the 1960s with the Tijuana Brass, then continued to have hits on the charts in the 1970s, ’80s and ’90s. An instrument that seems to be at its best advantage in jazz broke into popular music. Alpert was and is praised for his impeccable, full-bodied tone and sustains. “He really gives the instrument a vocal quality,” Weir said. As the story goes, Alpert was

inspired by the passionate crowd response to a bullfight when he visited Tijuana, Mexico. He re-recorded a song he’d been working on, affecting the trumpet in a wailing, mournful mariachi idiom and added crowd sounds. “He had a vision,” Cripps said. Weir said he wasn’t familiar with the Tijuana Brass’ catalog, but learned it for the tribute band. These days, he plays like a serious fan. “It’s such great, fun stuff,” he said. The band decided to learn the Tijuana Brass’ Christmas music last year. The players learned it, thinking it might come in handy. The decision proved fortuitous when the Denton Holiday Lighting Festival Association invited A

the stage for further action and adventure. Between the action sequences, director Sam Mendes takes time to build a personal drama that distinguishes this Bond film from its predecessors. Rated PG-13, 143 minutes. — B.A. Texas Chainsaw 3D The movie picks up where 1974’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre left off, with masked killer Leatherface on the loose again. Rated R, 92 minutes. — AP This is 40 (##1/2) Theoretically, this moderately funny domestic comedy follows two characters, Pete (Paul Rudd) and Debbie (Leslie Mann), a few years after their appearance in writer-director Judd Apatow’s Knocked Up. Here, Apatow seems to be revealing all, milking his own life for its crotch gags and bathroom humor as the couple approach their 40th birthdays. Apatow’s and Mann’s two daughters even appear as Pete and Debbie’s offspring. Rated R, 134 minutes. — B.A. Zero Dark Thirty (###) Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker) directed this movie concerned with the yearslong process behind finding and then executing Osama bin Laden. Jessica Chastain stars as the dedicated CIA agent who doggedly continued on a long and tedious journey to piece together the clues that will lead to the film’s final, well-executed assassination sequence. With an excellent supporting cast. Rated R, 157 minutes. — B.A.
