Holler Time’s country-rockers take it easy

T

he Denton-Gainesville outfit Holler Time uses enough men for a chain gang to make its ambling, devil-may-care country rock.

Holler Time may not be the most technical crew of musicians in town, but the seven-piece is still capable of making bar patrons want to scoot across a barn dance floor.

TURN IT UP Best bets for music this weekend

The seven-member band joins Dim Locator and Old War Horse at Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studio on Saturday. Kyle Delashaw talk-sings through the songs — sometimes falling short of the right note — while George Tinker and Andrew Mortazavi’s pedal steel effects wobble and sway. Think of Holler Time as a Jimmy Buffett kind of country. The band deals in a mellow sound that is delivered with a wink and a crooked smile. It’s a crew that knows what it’s doing and what it’s about: a good time with a flourish of mannerly Southern pride.

Festival roster keeps filling out T he folks at 35 Denton, a four-day walkable music festival in downtown Denton in March, continue to add national and regional talent to the lineup. On Wednesday, organizers announced that the schedule includes Los Angeles band the Dum Dum Girls. The four-piece band borrows pop sounds from surf rock, sweet Motown-esque melodies and danceable rhythms. Frontwoman Dee Dee occasionally sounds like Chrissie Hynde (wonder if she could take “Brass in Pocket” to the high school sock hop with those grown-woman lyrics of hers). The announcement followed the unveiling of veteran indie outfit Built to Spill signing up and hip-hop master Bun B getting a spot. — Staff report

OPENING FRIDAY

Beauty and the Beast 3-D A 3-D version of the classic animated tale about a princess taken captive by a monster who may be more than meets the eye. With the voices of Paige O’Hara, Robby Benson, Angela Lansbury and Jerry Orbach. Rated G, 84 minutes. — Los Angeles Times Carnage (###1/2) Roman Polanski directed from Yasmina Resa’s sharptongued play. A Manhattan couple (Christoph Waltz and Kate Winslet) visits the home of the parents (Jodie Foster and John C. Reilly) of a boy responsible for injuring their son in a fight. Decorum not only breaks down after a slow decline but ends in a hilarious no-holds-barred conflagration. Excellent cast and script combine for edgy entertainment. Rated R, 79 minutes. At the Magnolia in Dallas. — Boo Allen Contraband (##1/2) Standard actionthriller with a heavy emphasis on the action. Mark Wahlberg plays a socalled retired smuggler forced into the requisite “last job” to save a relative. He travels to Panama to bring back some illicit booty and becomes involved with an armored car hold-up. Naturally, things go awry as do several other of the film’s copious plots. With Kate Beckinsale, Ben Foster and Diego Luna. Rated R, 110 minutes. — B.A. The Iron Lady (##1/2) Meryl Streep makes another celebrated appearance, this time as a senior Margaret Thatcher. In her unstable mental state, the elderly Thatcher replays the high and low points of her professional and private life. Strange movie that flits back and forth with little defined viewpoint, making it somewhat mushy. Jim Broadbent plays husband Denis Thatcher, and Streep is, as expected, uncanny, not in her performance but in her imitation. Rated PG-13, 105 minutes. At the Magnolia in Dallas. — B.A. Joyful Noise (##) If some incarnation of Glee were to be developed for the Christian Broadcasting Network, it would probably look a lot like this. It’s not really effective as entertainment, especially during the musical numbers — which theoretically should serve as the most rousing source of emotion, since the film is about a gospel choir — when instead there’s a weird disconnect, a sense that the songs are simultaneously overproduced and hollow, and repeated cutaways to reaction shots of singers nodding and

mother’s anguished face upon her first discovery and then a few moments later holding it in her arms, leaving the emphasis where it belongs. Ajla (Zana Marjanovic) and Danijel (Goran Kostic) know each other briefly before the war. When it begins, many Muslim women in their village are rounded up and forced into demeaning servitude to the Serbian army. Danijel, an officer, pulls Ajla aside, protecting her and giving her attention not enjoyed by the other women. Before long, they meet in his room for various reasons, a tooquick coupling that mars the effectiveness of Jolie’s script. When he transfers to Sarajevo, he somehow relocates her as well, putting her alone in a room where she can continue her passion for painting.

The war drags on for several years, but the film rarely progresses in its dramatic escalation. Any sort of relationship the couple might experience becomes one of unequal dependence, no matter how much it might be painted as an equal love story. Jolie has worked well with cinematographer Dean Semler to render a succession of wellcomposed, arresting images. The visual aspect of the film and Jolie’s sometimes acute handling of the narrative suggest that she might possess the ability to eventually become a proficient director. That is, if that acting thing doesn’t work out for her.

urely the atrocities of the Bosnian war of the early 1990s were not as bad as those seen in the new In the Land of Blood and Honey. But they were, and that’s why the film can arouse such conflicting responses. The film dramatizes many of the horrors of that war, but it also mixes in what looks to be an incongruous love story. The Romeo and Juliet take-off of a Serbian man and Muslim woman falling for each other strains credulity, at best. But, saying that, first-time writer-director Angelina Jolie has rendered a fairly involving film out of the story she burdens herself with. She also brings a woman’s perspective to the horrors of that war, refusing to

leg Belogorsky is like a lot of 20-something Denton residents. When it comes to friends, he’s drawn to book smarts, creativity and big appetite for music. He’s not one to discriminate. But that’s just part of the reason Belogorsky pioneered Denton Is Burning, a weekly dance party that caters to the queer crowd in Denton. (Before you reach for the laptop to fire off a letter of complaint, understand that “queer” has been reclaimed as a friendly umbrella term for the more-correct-yet-clumsy “GLBT,” another term for people who identify as being gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender.) “It was inspired by the New York ballroom scene, which was an underground scene and pretty much a gay scene,” Belogorsky said. “The name, though — Denton Is Burning — is taken from this really cool documentary about that scene called Paris Is Burning.” The 1990 film Paris Is Burning chronicled the real lives and ambitions of a group of underclass drag queens — gay men who take the cultural assumptions about what femininity looks like and then make an artful cartoon of it. Ball gowns are whale-boned and embellished, wigs are every color found in the biggest box of crayons and Eiffel Tower tall. The documentary tapped into the real and poignant dreams of men who are often marginalized, and it championed their love of female magic. With the right girdle, the elegant drop of a platform boot and enough Max Factor, a 6-foot man with broad shoulders and a lantern jaw could be a kitten, a vixen or a coquette. Belogorsky said he has long been a fan of house music that revolutionized the nightlife of Chicago and the underground house scene of New York. He said he’s been drawn to the creativity of the scene and its music, not to mention the free flow of the house music itself. “I think it has to do with the way the music is produced, too,” Belogorsky said. “It’s not haphazard, I wouldn’t say. But the way the music is put together, it’s not like it’s all about the tiny details and having a technique. It’s kind of messy and there are a lot of edges to it.” When house music was packing Chicago clubs, most of the patrons were gay, and the era produced the country’s first openly gay DJs. Eventually, Madonna appropriated the beats and ebullience of the scene for mainstream pop, and in her public life she still credits gay and lesbian artists for being both predictors and creators of popular music, fashion and art. Belogorsky said he deliberately created a flier for the dance party that doesn’t make mention of sexual orientation or genres. He just put an elegant, androgynous profile on a stark red poster inviting people to “Denton Is Burning” and noting that the Rubber Gloves event was for ages 21 and older. Denton already has an established gay bar, Mabel Peabody’s

Beauty Parlor and Chainsaw Repair. Belogorsky said there was plenty of room for another gathering of gay Denton residents and their friends. “As far as bringing a gay night to Rubber Gloves, I think it’s good for the gay community to have more than one place where they can be themselves,” said Belogorsky, who considers himself an ally of the gay community. Belogorsky threw the first Denton Is Burning party last December, and right now, his emphasis is on spinning music that will get boys dancing with boys and girls dancing with girls. The straight-but-not-narrow are invited to the Monday night dance party at Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studios. Owner Josh Baish said “it just seemed like it would fit” when Belogorsky approached him with the idea of starting the party at the snug, ragged bar that stands just on the other side of the tracks. Rubber Gloves has recently become a hot spot for local DJs, especially after the acrimonious split between

Denton’s best-known DJ, Yeahdef, and the management at Hailey’s Club. Belogorsky, a DJ since high school, said he’s played in Denton bands and liked the club as a venue when he played there. “I’ve always been friendly with Josh and the people who work at Rubber Gloves,” he said. “I DJ quite a bit, and I was interested in doing that at Rubber Gloves since a lot of other DJs have been working there.” Baish said his club doors open for people who like music

and joining friends for drinks, regardless of who they date. Baish is no respecter of genre, either. “We appreciate and welcome all types of music, especially a genre that represents and was so important to the gay underground culture of late ’80s and early ’90s,” he said. Belogorsky said he doesn’t advertise genres, but likes to play 1970s and ’80s boogie and disco. He plays Madonna, as well as 1990s dance music, but stays away from current popu-

Harriet’s doting uncle, Henrik Vanger (Christopher Plummer), is compelled to find the evil maniac sending him anonymous reminders of his beloved niece. Stomach-churning violence ensues. Rated R, 158 minutes. — Lucinda Breeding Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol (###1/2) The Impossible Mission Force (Tom Cruise, Paula Patton, Jeremy Renner and Simon Pegg) finds itself abandoned just as they need to break into the Kremlin and, later, to scale the world’s tallest building in Dubai. This latest Impossible entry delivers on constant action and white-knuckle sequences, all ably rendered by animation director Brad Bird (The Incredibles), who makes an impressive first effort with humans. See it in Imax for maximum effect. Rated PG-13, 133 minutes. — B.A. The Muppets (###) In this new

caper featuring Jim Henson’s lovable creations, Amy Adams and Jason Segel give support as a couple who venture to Los Angeles and end up helping the Muppets save their old studio from a dastardly oilman (Chris Cooper). The film showcases the best of what always made the Muppets popular, along with an obvious plea to attract a new generation. Rated PG, 98 minutes. — B.A. Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (##) Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law bicker and banter and bob and weave with diminishing returns in this sequel to the 2009 smash hit Sherlock Holmes. Director Guy Ritchie once again applies his revisionist approach to Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic literary character, infusing the film with his trademark, hyperkinetic aesthetic and turning the renowned detective into a wisecracking butt-kicker. Here, Downey’s Holmes faces off against brilliant supervillain Professor Moriarty (Jared Harris), who’s cooked up a scheme to pit European nations against each

other in hopes of benefiting from the demand for arms. Noomi Rapace tags along for some reason as a gypsy fortuneteller looking for her missing brother. Rated PG-13, 129 minutes. — AP Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy (###) Gary Oldman stars as spy novelist John le Carre’s British secret operative George Smiley. In the 1970s, someone seems to be a double agent for Russia and Smiley returns from recent retirement to find him out. Slow but methodical. Frequent jumps in time, scene and character make this a challenging yet rewarding experience. Rated R, 127 minutes. — B.A. War Horse (##) Steven Spielberg’s glossy rendition of a London play about a magnificent horse bought by a poor English farmer (Peter Mullan). The story travels through consecutive episodes with different owners and protectors of the horse, all the while being tracked

(No word on whether that includes the current gay icon, Lady Gaga, she of the pop ode to gender-bending and gay pride in the song “Born This Way.”) “It’s kind of weird to have this on a Monday night, because nothing is really going on in Denton on Monday night, but we’ve had really good crowds. They’re getting bigger every night. And we’re starting to see a lot of people coming up from Dallas.” Belogorsky said he is developing the weekly event with Dallas-Fort Worth DJ Tiago Varjao and local musician Julie McKendrick. He is planning to bring in a prominent DJ from Chicago and another from Europe. He predicts that Denton Is Burning will one day include contests, drag pageants and other events. “I’m hoping to reach out to the GLBT groups on campus — GLAD [at the University of North Texas] and Pride [from Texas Woman’s University] — so they can come and hang out, too,” he said. The dance night is 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. every Monday at Rubber Gloves, 411 E. Sycamore St. Cover is free and the evening is open to ages 21 and up. LUCINDA BREEDING can be reached at 940-5666877. Rated PG-13, 146 minutes. — B.A. We Bought a Zoo (##) The father (Matt Damon) of a troubled family buys a troubled Los Angeles zoo. Together the zoo and family formulaically recover. And, of course, dad has a romance with one of the zoo workers (Scarlett Johansson). Sappy, imminently forgettable yet family-friendly film from underachieving director Cameron Crowe. Well photographed by Rodrigo Prieto. Rated PG, 124 minutes. — B.A. Young Adult (####) Charlize Theron stars as the troubled title character, a single woman at loose ends who travels to her small hometown in Minnesota to try to force a reconciliation with her former boyfriend (Patrick Wilson). Diablo Cody (Juno) wrote the biting script, and Jason Reitman deftly directed a talented cast headed by a magnificently persuasive Theron. Rated R, 94 minutes. — B.A.
