From left, Amanda Carson Green as Claire, Chad Withers as Hal and Kerri Petersen as Catherine appear in Denton Community Theatre’s staging of Proof.
Multi-angle view Audiences to get look at ‘Proof,’ both plus and minus set Denton audiences have a rare chance to see what Denton Community Theatre representatives have to do to win at every level of the American Association of Community Theatre’s competition festival. When season ticket holders and patrons sit down to watch the David Auburn drama Proof, they’ll be peeking behind the scenes. The cast and crew of the drama will set up the minimal set, perform a cutting of the drama in 60 minutes, then strike the set. “We’re showing the audience exactly what the judges and audiences will see during the [Texas Nonprofit Theatres] festival,” said Mike Barrow, managing director of the community theater. “It’s not something our audiences get to see.” Art nerds and theater buffs will probably be the most interested in seeing how cast and crew work as a team to produce
a seamless and professional show. Entertainment seekers won’t be left out in the cold, though. Director Jeannene Abney said the drama is a meaty play about family dynamics, and that the company has recruited a cast that is, in majority, made up of theater teachers. Proof is about a pair of sisters struggling to reconcile their broken relationship in the wake of their father’s mental illness and death. Their father, Robert (John Evarts) was a mathematical genius. His daughter Catherine (Kerri Petersen) fears she’s inherited her father’s madness in tandem with his genius. Her sister, Claire (Amanda Carson Green), fears the same. Their grief is interrupted when Robert’s protege discovers a groundbreaking mathematical proof in the professor’s papers, and Catherine insists the proof is her work. “There isn’t any spectacle in this show,” Abney said. “And it is a difficult show to direct, but I think it’s almost as if there is a profoundness in its simplicity. The equation in question here
is life. Life isn’t anything like math. Life doesn’t have all these precise answers.” The directorial team has tapped into one of its biggest strengths to keep the audience interested. Mildred A. Peveto, a member of the festival team, said she and Jeannene Abney worked with the scenic designer to have a simple set that is ripe with triangles, a basic element not just in math, but in relationships. The drama opens Friday and runs through Jan. 23. Performances are 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Jan. 14-15 and Jan. 21-22, with 2 p.m. matinees on Sunday and Jan. 23. Tickets cost $20 for adults, $18 for seniors age 62 and older and $10 for children and all students with a valid ID. To make reservations, visit www. campustheatre.com or call 940-382-1915. The company will perform in the festival at about 8:30 p.m. Jan. 28 at the Medical Center of Lewisville Grand Theatre, 100 N. Charles St. in Lewisville. — Lucinda Breeding

The storm that ate the apps: David Keens relies on measured and careful craftsmanship to make a glass tornado. Shards of colored glass caught up in the vortex make a viewer wonder how a teacher tolerates a classroom full of iPhones.
Stormy weather Next week’s gala to honor glass artist
W
ith a lot of heat and just as much imagination, artist David Keens can turn a storm into a still life in glass. Still life might not be the most precise word, but Keens, the 2007 official artist of Texas, can stop a vortex in time. Keens is the 2011 gala artist for the Denton-based Visual Arts Society of Texas. His solo show opens at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 21 in the Gough Gallery at the Center for the Visual Arts, 400 E. Hickory St. “David Keens: A Look Back” is a show that presents Keens’ older work, as well as new work — the artist’s glass tornadoes. Keens directs the glass program at the University of Texas at Arlington, and his recent
works reveal a craftsman who is surrounded by the graphics, symbols and strong colors of the digital revolution. His take on these images, though, is based in the techniques and skill of a master with a sharp eye. The Jan. 21 gala begins with a reception, with a catered dinner at 6:25 p.m. Keens discusses his work and leads a presentation at 7 p.m. The gala is a fundraising event for the society. Tickets are $35 for society members, $50 for non-members. Patron tables are $750 and sponsor tables are $500. For reservations, call Lynne Cox at 972-827-8647 or e-mail executivedirector@vastarts.org. — Lucinda Breeding

son for writing songs that sound bumpkin-lite on one level, but keen on another. To date, the Lo-Fi Chorus’ track “Bartender stands as the band’s dash of brilliance. It’s a simple story of a bar patron fiddling with a tip jar only to be thought a thief by the man at the tap and bottles. The track, from the band’s self-titled debut, could also be a love note to any Denton watering hole, where everyone is working an angle. The bar-
tender needs the tips for tuition, the musician needs a crowd to pay for indie studio time and the patron? He just wants a stout drink and a song to scratch his beard to. Lo-Fi Chorus released its second album, Something in the Air, in 2006. Sounds like: Tom Petty took a trans-Atlantic flight with Willie Nelson. Details: Lo-Fi Chorus shares the stage at Dan’s with Welcome Signs and Tony Ferraro. Music starts at 10 p.m. Cover is $5. — Lucinda Breeding

Some like it hot W PHO
Mr. Chopsticks $7.25 for a large bowl. 1663 Scripture St. 940-566-5671. Open 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday.
This slightly sweet, slightly spicy Vietnamese rice noodle soup makes more than a meal. Pho lovers can add chicken or beef to Mr. Chopstick’s version, which is made from a chickenbased broth rather than the more traditional beef stock. According to owner Chai Tamprateep, the quality of the broth is “crucial.” “To have good soup, you have to have good broth,” he said. His pho is steeped with onion, garlic and spices, which include
Los Toreros $5.99. 2900 Wind River Lane, Suite 134. 940-390-7693. Open 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday.
Those who live on the south side of town can indulge in this healthy pick from Unicorn Lake’s new upscale Mexican restaurant, Los Toreros, which took its recipe from its big sister restaurant, El Matador.
The two versions are virtually identical. They both start with chicken cooked in a tomato-based broth chock full of vegetables, including corn, carrots, celery, onion and red and green peppers. Each is topped with crispy tortilla strips and avocado. The only difference? The cheese. El Matador’s version is laden with mozzarella, while Los Toreros comes with a slice of queso fresco. Los Toreros’ portion is for smaller appetites, but it also comes with a side of Spanish rice.

hat better way to stave off the wintry chills than a piping hot bowl of homemade soup? Almost every Denton restaurant offers at least one soup on its menu, and many have revolving selections that change daily. Narrowing down this list was a challenge, but here are a few you can count on to warm you up when the temperatures drop.

Banter Cup $4, bowl $5. 219 W. Oak St. 940-565-1638. Open 10 a.m. to midnight daily.
Tomato basil ranks right up there as the most popular soup in town, if the number of restaurants that boast a recipe is any indication. Banter’s won this feature spot for being the most unique, with low-fat cream cheese blended with crushed tomatoes, fresh basil, garlic, salt, pepper and extra virgin olive oil. The recipe came from Michelle Kuzov, who sold the restaurant to Stephen Johnson and Ellen Ryfle in January. Ryfle said Banter lovers need not worry; the atmosphere of the artsy downtown hangout will not change. It will still offer live music, feature local artists and continue the Thursday open mic night, one of the few left in the area. The menu will undergo a slight revision in February, but favorite dishes, including the tomato basil soup, will remain. Try these other deserving tomato basil soups when you’re out and about town: Bochy’s, for its superb garlic infusion,
anise, cinnamon stick, cardamom and fresh ginger. Limes, bean sprouts, jalapeno slices, cilantro and plum sauce sides come served on a plate covering the bowl, ensuring the soup will be hot when it arrives at the table. Other condiments, such as soy sauce and chili paste, are already on the table available for additional soup doctoring. This 25-year-old Asian restaurant, which moved from Hickory Street to its current location north of the University of North Texas campus, features Chinese, Thai and Japanese cuisines. Other best-sellers? “We sell a lot of hot and sour and egg drop soup,” Tamprateep said.
INDIAN SUMMER
Ramen Republic Noodle House $5, large $6.50, monster $8. 210 E. Hickory St. 940-387-3757. Open Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.
This is not the curly, compact, lowbudget ramen that goes on sale at the grocery store in packages of 10 for $1. These are long, thin, elegant noodles that swim in broth hot off the stove. First-time customers to Ramen Republic are walked through the fivestep process of building their own noodle dishes. Picking the bowl size is the first big decision — big, bigger, biggest — followed by selecting an allnatural, low-sodium vegetable, garlic beef or ginger chicken broth. Next, choose from one of four types

behind the counter. In minutes, the meal is complete. Ramen Republic is a place where strict vegans and shameless carnivores sit side by side, where the bland meets spicy, and hot meets cold. Owner Charlie Foster, who opened the Asian-inspired restaurant near the Industrial Street area last June, said, “There are over 1 million different bowl combinations available.” A meat-eater’s suggestion: Try the pork.

$3.99. 609 Sunset St. 940-383-2051. Open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from noon to 8 p.m. Sunday.
For a simple soup that’s good and good for you, try the lentil soup from International Foods of Denton, one block south of University Drive. This restaurant, which opened its doors to Denton over 16 years ago, specializes in Mediterranean, Persian, Greek and Middle
Eastern cuisine. The lentil soup is “very healthy,” said Kim Pourmorshed, who owns and operates the restaurant with her hus-

band, Ali. “It’s good for your stomach, your body and your hormones,” she said. In addition to crushed lentils, the soup contains a blend of carrots and onions, herbs and some secret spices that make it special, Pourmorshed said. The ingredients are blended into a thin, smooth soup that goes down easily, a good choice for a sensitive tummy, and reheats well. Customers can ask for a side of pita bread as well, perfect for scraping the bowl to get every last drop.
The Abbey Inn Restaurant and Pub Cup $3.99, bowl $5.99. 101 W. Hickory St. 940-566-5483. Open 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Wednesday and 11 a.m. to midnight Thursday through Saturday.
The Abbey Inn’s French onion soup is made with beef and chicken stock added to a sweet onion, sherry and butter reduction. But what makes this version memorable is the homemade croutons — soppy-soft bite-sized pillows made from sourdough, wheatberry, pumpernickel and marble rye breads — covered by a thin layer of melted Harvarti cheese, which holds
It’s winter, so think summer, as in Indian Summer Soup — one of three of Good Eats’ soup offerings, which also include a daily special and tomato basil. “It’s our best-selling soup,” said kitchen manager Eric Wright. The golden yellow comfort food looks as warm as it tastes, made with melted American cheese, chicken, onion, margarine, garlic, mushrooms and corn with an everso-slight kick from poblano pepper. Denton is fortunate to be home to one of only three Good Eats restaurants left in Texas from a chain serving ranchstyle food that started off with a bang in 1986 by E. Gene Street. Street also began the Black-eyed Pea country-style chain and several other successful Dallas-based restaurants and became a founder of Consolidated Restaurant Operations Inc., which oversees the operations of successful chains in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, such as El Chico, Cantina Laredo and III Forks as well as Good Eats. Unlike other repeateries whose menu items are often at least partially premade, Good Eats uses all fresh produce and creates all of its recipes in-house from scratch, which makes its ranch-style meals particularly mmm, mmm good. in the heat and contains the flavors. Next time you’re in the neighborhood, stop by and check out the recent renovations in the lower level of the restaurant on the southeast corner of the downtown Square. What was once the Boiler Room, dedicated to live music, is now the Abbey Underground. Co-owner Tim Trawick said they have added seating and are “trying to create a cozy pub environment,” which will feature 99 bottles of beer on the back wall of the bar. For now, the menu will be the same upstairs as down, so either way you can have your soup and eat it too.

OPENING FRIDAY The Dilemma The longtime friendship of business partners Ronny (Vince Vaughn) and Nick (Kevin James) gets put to the test when Ronny spots Nick's wife out with another man, and in the process of investigating the possible affair, Ronny learns Nick has a few secrets of his own. Night Catches Us (###) Earnest yet powerful drama, set in the late 1970s, about a former Black Panther (Anthony Mackie) who returns to the racially tense Philadelphia neighborhood where he grew up, finding comfort from a single mother (Kerry Washington) but plenty of trouble with old acquaintances. Director Tanya Hamilton gets some fine performances and character-driven moments that help to compensate for a predictable script that captures its setting but lacks broad context. ot all superheroes are created equal. Some are brave, humble, intelligent and handsome. And some are the Green Hornet. Michel Gondry, a French purveyor of whimsy and absurdity (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Science of Sleep), is behind this latest cinematic edition of a 75-yearold comic book, radio serial and television series. And the only thing more incongruous than Gondry interpreting his version of the original ridiculous premise is that Seth Rogen plays the title character.
The Green Hornet Rated PG-13, 118 minutes. Opens Friday.
Rogen also co-wrote the screenplay with Evan Goldberg, and the two writers make the main character of Britt Reid simply the latest Apatowinspired, wide-eyed stoner dude caught in the wrong place. Combined with Gondry’s typically erratic direction, it results in an uneven lump of humor, black humor, feigned romance, artificial action sequences, cartoonish violence and faux heroics. When his father (Tom Wilkinson) dies, Britt Reid
inherits his wealth, including Los Angeles’ faltering newspaper, The Daily Sentinel. Reid also befriends his father’s auto mechanic, Kato (Jay Chou), who turns out to have super fighting skills to go along with his clever inventiveness. Before long, they have taken their alter-personae as the Green Hornet and his sidekick, a crime-fighting duo with a garage full of nifty cars, cheesy masks, trench coats and unseemly fedoras. Their main nemesis, Chudnofsky (Christoph Waitz), aims to control all the city’s crime. But, he seems more intent on playing than menacing. Screenwriters Rogen and Goldberg are more comfortable supplying snappy retorts and sophomoric one-liners for Britt Reid than in crafting any kind of a consistent, coherent story,
an omission hindered further by Gondry’s tendency to let his actors mug it up and to draw out empty sequences. Gondry must have made Rogen feel at home, letting the limited actor deliver insults, kick groins and chuckle frequently at his own brilliance. Besides these distractions, Cameron Diaz appears as the gratuitous beauty who befuddles all men and solves all problems. John Schwartzman’s hazy, often drab photography deadens the look of the film, accentuating the fact that little reason seems to exist for also making this film a 3-D attraction. But, dredging up a marginally successful 75-year-old property never made sense anyway. DR. BOO ALLEN is an award-winning film critic for the Denton Record-Chronicle.

MOVIES Continued from Page 10 cousin Eustace (Will Poulter). They join Prince Caspian (Ben Barnes) on the ship the Dawn Treader and head toward the end of the world, but not before a series of action scenes and an army of computer-generated monsters. Decent, but not equal to the first two in the series. Rated PG, 115 minutes. — B.A. Country Strong While recuperating at a rehab facility, country-music superstar Kelly Canter (Gwyneth Paltrow) takes a romantic interest in musician Beau Hutton (Garrett Hedlund). Kelly includes Beau in her plans as she prepares for a comeback tour orchestrated by her manager husband, James (Tim McGraw), who also has a protege (Leighton Meester) he is grooming for stardom. Rated PG-13, 117 minutes. The Fighter (##) In a story based on two actual half-brothers from Lowell, Mass., Mark Wahlberg plays Mickey Ward, a promising boxer, who trains with his crack-addicted brother, Dickie Eklund (Christian Bale). David O. Russell directs but fails to find much of interest in the dead-end brothers and their cinematically stale story. Rated R, 114 minutes. — B.A. Gulliver’s Travels (#) Jack Black is his typically obnoxious self as Gulliver, a mail clerk who lies his way into writing a travel article on the Bermuda Triangle. On the subsequent Caribbean trip, he accidentally lands in Lilliput, land of little people feuding with their enemy. Gulliver saves the day while also expediting a romance between a princess (Emily Blunt) and a commoner (Jason Segal). This appallingly stupid insult to Jonathan Swift contains adolescent humor and primitive special effects, and should appeal only to toddlers. If that. Rated PG, 87 minutes. — B.A. How Do You Know (##1/2) Writerdirector James L. Brooks (As Good As

Jeff Bridges is the hard-drinking Rooster Cogburn and Hailee Steinfeld is his young traveling companion in True Grit. It Gets) returns with another of his character-driven romantic comedies about the interconnected relationships between a top softball player (Reese Witherspoon), a smug baseball star (Owen Wilson), a down-onhis-luck corporate executive (Paul Rudd) and his crooked father (Jack Nicholson). It’s well-acted, but the meandering script feels more familiar than fresh by Brooks’ standards. Rated PG-13, 121 minutes. — T.J. The King’s Speech (####) Colin First plays the Duke of York, the next King George VI, who, before ascending to the crown, struggles to overcome a halting stammer. He enlists the help of an unorthodox speech therapist (Geoffrey Rush). Well observed, thoughtful, intelligent film from director Tom Hooper, with an excellent supporting cast: Helena
Bonham-Carter, Derek Jacobi, Guy Pearce, Michael Gambon. Rated R, 118 minutes. — B.A. Little Fockers (##) This third entry in the Meet the Parents series ranks as the dumbest of all, a dubious achievement. This time, Jack Byrnes (Robert DeNiro) has health problems and wants to make sure his son-inlaw Greg (Ben Stiller) can take care of Jack's daughter Pam (Teri Polo). The gags center on erectile dysfunction, enemas, poop and every lower common denominator. Dustin Hoffman and Barbra Streisand appear briefly. Rated PG-13, 98 minutes. Now playing. — B.A. Season of the Witch A knight returning from the Crusades (Nicolas Cage) finds Europe ravaged by the Black Plague. When he and his friend, Felson (Ron Perlman), are ordered to
take an accused witch to a remote abbey to destroy her powers, they realize that their prisoner is no ordinary girl, and evil forces await them at their destination. Rated PG-13, 95 minutes. Tangled (###1/2) Energetic 3-D animated musical retelling of the story of Rapunzel (voiced by Mandy Moore), the teenage girl whose long, flowing hair possesses magical powers, causing her to be kidnapped and held in a tower until a petty thief becomes her unlikely rescuer, leading to an adventure filled with quirky characters both good and evil. It’s a crisply animated tale with a couple of standout production numbers and a strong heroine. While slow in spots, it has appeal for all ages. Rated PG, 101 minutes. — T.J. The Tourist (##) The pairing of Oscar winners Johnny Depp and

El Guapo’s Huge menu encompasses Tex-Mex and Mexican standards as well as ribs, brisket and twists like Santana’s Supernatural Quesadillas (fajita chicken and bacon) and jalapeno-stuffed shrimp. Ilada Parilla Asada steak with avocado was a little salty; enchiladas are very good. Full bar. 419 S. Elm St. Mon-Fri 11-10, SatSun 11-11. $$. 940-566-5575. El Pariente Roadside grocery and music store serves exemplary Mexican fare. High scores for authenticity and freshness of ingredients. Fajita asada burritos and shrimp cocktails aren’t appetizers but do the trick. Cabrito falls off bone in a spicy broth. 2532 Louise St. Daily 9-8. $. 940-380-1208. Fuzzy’s Taco Shop Eatery stakes claim of wide variety in local taco territory. Soft and crispy tacos avail-
able with shrimp, fish, chicken, garlic shredded beef and veggies. Breakfast burritos too. Always open early and late. Fun spot makes its point with huge California-style burritos. Delightful quesadillas and tacos, too. Collegiate atmosphere; friendly service. Beer. 1007 Ave. C. Daily 11-9. $$$. 940-381-0272. La Mexicana Strictly authentic Mexican with enough Tex-Mex to keep locals happy. Chili relleno is a winner, with earthy beans and rice. Chicken enchiladas are complex, savory. Also available: more than a dozen seafood dishes, and menudo served daily. Swift service with plenty of smiles. Beer. 619 S. Locust St. Daily 9-10. $. 940-483-8019. Mazatlan Mexican Restaurant Authentic Mexican dining includes worthy chicken enchiladas and flautas. Fine standard combo choices and b’fast items with reasonable prices. Quick service. Beer and wine.

Angelina Jolie lend star power to this otherwise muddled romantic thriller about a math teacher (Depp) who crosses paths with an alluring stranger (Jolie) on a train to Venice, before he realizes that she’s somehow involved in a dangerous international scheme. The actors can’t rescue a tedious mistaken-identity script that relies on formulaic catand-mouse plot mechanics. But at least the Italian scenery helps pass the time. Rated PG-13, 103 minutes. — T.J. Tron: Legacy Rebellious Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund) is haunted by the mysterious disappearance of his father (Jeff Bridges, reprising his role from 1982’s Tron), a man once known as the world's leading video game developer. When Sam investigates a strange signal sent from the old Flynn's Arcade — a signal that could only come from his father — he finds himself pulled into a digital world where his father has been trapped for 20 years. With Olivia Wilde and Michael Sheen. Rated PG, 126 minutes. True Grit (###1/2) Jeff Bridges plays slovenly, perpetually drunk U.S. Marshal Rooster Cogburn, enlisted by 14-year-old Mattie (Hailee Steinfeld) to enter American Indian territory and find her father's murderer (Josh Brolin). They are joined by a Texas Ranger (Matt Damon). The Coen brothers make their own stylized Western, while also paying heed to Western tropes and mythology. Rated PG-13, 110 minutes. — B.A. Yogi Bear (##) Kids might enjoy this frenetic 3-D adaptation of the classic cartoon, which places CGI bears in a live-action story about a greedy politician who wants to close Jellystone Park just before its 100year anniversary. It’s up to mischievous Yogi (voice of Dan Aykroyd) and Boo-Boo (Justin Timberlake) to save the day. The sight gags and one-liners are sporadically amusing, but the script proves that the material isn’t meant to be stretched to feature length. Rated PG, 80 minutes. — T.J.
Not your standard Tex-Mex — worth the drive. Sampler appetizer comes with crunchy chicken flautas, fresh guacamole. Pechuga (grilled chicken breast) in creme good to the last bite, and beef fajitas are juicy and flavorful. Full bar. 26615 U.S. 380 East, Aubrey. Tues-Sat 11-10, Sun 11-9. $$$. 940-440-9483.
