all it a multi-culti troupe of witty kids giving that good old American form — rhythm & blues — a good, old college try. Ava Luna, a New York group, sings together like kids who have done the whole show choir/glee club thing (read: they know the basics of vocal jazz) but needed an outlet to make the music that makes them want to shake their groove things. The group’s 2012 album, Ice Level, is rich with funky

thanks to the girls crooning their “ooohs” in the background and Hernandez whipping the melismatics around, singing, “But I don’t wanna sit or I might escape her gaze. And if I could focus, I would know the stronger of us.” Local jazz geeks and closet R&B freaks are sure to get weak in the knees when the band brings its funk to Denton’s Macaroni Island, a local house show venue that has already stacked up some significant shows since opening last August. Ava Luna plays

the venue on Monday night. But it’s not just the jazz and R&B fans who can dig in to Ava Luna. Noise rock fans and Devo disciples will like the unexpected bursts of guitar distortion and the cheeky, angular synth quips. This is a group that likes an infectious rhythm. “Eight Nine (Won’t You Be Mine) invokes the Dixie Cups’ “Iko Iko,” and Ava Luna’s “Down Right” overlays popping and swishing rhythms. magic of data Artist books tell stories in shape, texture and color

T

he information age has changed the way Americans do everything. Images and words are a fingertip away at almost all times — Google maps, Yelp reviews, YouTube videos. There’s an app for all of them, thanks to the artistic cunning of designers and the know-how of code writers. Texas Woman’s University takes the marriage of art and words back from the digital platform and onto the pulp and pedestal in “Seductive Alchemy: Books by Artists.” Artists books gather inspiration and collate them into a single work, often using image and text. Some artists using printmaking techniques to create books, while others use fiber techniques, weaving their own pages and stitching

Some artist books tell a story in a unique “binding,” like the apple-shaped box that tells a story formatted in wedgeshaped chapters in the permanent collection at University of North Texas Rare Book Room. Other artists use a book’s shape and pages to record abstract or

representational ideas. Ruth Rogers, curator of special collections at Wellesley College, created the exhibit of 98 artist books by 76 artists. “In this exhibition, I have arranged the works in thematic ‘families’ as a way of emphasizing how shared creative inspiration can lead to such

enormously varied expression in the finished piece,” Rogers writes in her curator’s statement. “Like different pitches in a chorus, they enhance each other’s voice by being near one another.” The exhibit runs through Feb. 15 in the East and West galleries at the TWU Art

Building, at the corner of Oakland and Texas streets. Rogers will give a lecture from 4 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, and a reception will follow. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Gallery admission is free. — Lucinda Breeding

OPENING FRIDAY Mama Jessica Chastain plays a woman caring for two traumatized sisters who may be haunted by an evil force. Rated PG-13, 100 minutes. — The Associated Press

NOW PLAYING Argo (###1/2) Ben Affleck directed and takes the lead role in this true story of a CIA operative who goes to Iran in 1980 posing as the producer of a bogus science-fiction film in order to extract six Americans hiding in the home of the Canadian ambassador. Abundant dark humor smoothly combines with frightening sequences and ample action. With an excellent supporting cast, including John Goodman, Alan Arkin, Clea DuVall and Tate Donovan. Rated R, 120 minutes. — Boo Allen Django Unchained (##1/2) In Quentin Tarantino’s new tale of wickedly savage retribution, a black man (Jamie Foxx) gets to rewrite Deep South history by becoming a bounty hunter on a killing spree of white slave owners and overseers just before the Civil War. It’s Tarantino at his most puerile and least inventive, with the premise offering little more than cold, nasty revenge and barrels of squishing, squirting blood. Performances by Foxx, Leonardo DiCaprio, Christoph Waltz and Samuel L. Jackson make the film intermittently entertaining. Rated R, 165 minutes. — AP Gangster Squad (##) This pulpy, violent tale of cops and mobsters in 1949 Los Angeles rides an uncomfortable line between outlandishness and outright parody, and it’s difficult to tell which is director Ruben Fleischer’s intention. While the film wallows in period detail and has some sporadic moments of amusing banter, it’s mostly flashy, empty and cacophonous, and it woefully wastes a strong cast led by Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone in barely developed, one-note roles. With a cartoony Sean Penn as mob king Mickey Cohen and Brolin as a police sergeant tasked with putting together a secret team to take down Cohen’s empire. Rated R, 113 minutes. — AP The Guilt Trip (#1/2) In this lame comedy written by Dan Fogelman and directed by Anne Fletcher, Barbra Streisand and Seth Rogen star as a

OK, so maybe Cruise doesn’t exactly resemble the Reacher of British novelist Lee Child’s books, but Christopher McQuarrie’s film moves so fluidly and with such confidence, it’ll suck you in from the start. Besides being a mind teaser, Jack Reacher offers the muscular thrills of a ‘70s action flick, including fight scenes and a thrilling, prolonged car chase through the streets of downtown Pittsburgh. New York City Mayor Nicholas Hostetler (Russell Crowe) has doubts about the fidelity of his wife, Cathleen (Catherine Zeta-Jones), in Broken City.

Irreparably ‘Broken’ By Christy Lemire AP Movie Critic

It should come as no surprise that every character in a movie called Broken City is either rotten to the core, or a liar, or a schemer, or the bearer of seriously damaging secrets. What is surprising — and frustrating, really — is that these characters never feel like real people, despite a series of twists that should reveal hidden, unexpected facets of their personalities and despite being played by big-name stars including Mark Wahlberg, Russell Crowe and Catherine Zeta-Jones. They’re all still conniving, only with varying alliances and targets. At the center of these dizzying double crosses is Wahlberg as Billy Taggart, a former New York police detective who got kicked off the force after a

questionable shooting. Seven years later, Billy is barely getting by as a private eye in Brooklyn. He is, however, sober these days and enjoying life with his gorgeous actress-girlfriend (Natalie Martinez) who’s just starred in her first film. (Clips of the movie, which we see at the premiere, have the glossy, stilted look of a commercial for erectile dysfunction medication, just one of many elements of director Allen Hughes’ film that feel distractingly unconvincing.) Then one day, New York City

Mayor Nicholas Hostetler (Crowe), who’d always been on Billy’s side, hires Billy to investigate whether his wife (ZetaJones) is having an affair. Hostetler is up for re-election in a week and doesn’t want to lose to his young, well-financed challenger, Jack Valliant (Barry Pepper), over scandalous revelations that he’s being cuckolded. But Billy’s digging, with the help of his wisecracking assistant (Alona Tal, who shares some amusing banter with Wahlberg), leads to layers upon layers of discoveries that indicate that the mayor is setting him up. These involve Valliant, Valliant’s campaign manager (Kyle Chandler), the police commissioner (Jeffrey Wright) and some wealthy, well-connected land developers. Everything is simultaneously too

complicated and overly spelledout in Brian Tucker’s script, and none of it is terribly intriguing. Hughes, best known as onehalf of the filmmaking Hughes brothers (Menace II Society, The Book of Eli), has come up with a forgettable piece of pulp with some uncomfortable injections of humor and a weird homophobic streak. For a supposedly great detective, Wahlberg’s character always seems sort of startled and one step behind. Crowe is singularly sleazy behind his inconsistent New York accent. And Zeta-Jones feels underused in a poorly developed (but theoretically pivotal) supporting part. Everyone involved here has made and will make vastly better films. Time to deposit that paycheck and move on.

FBI agent John Bannister (Forest Whitaker, left) has a chat with Ray Owens (Arnold Schwarzenegger), sheriff of a tiny Arizona border town, in The Last Stand.

Quintessential Schwarzenegger Arnold’s return to big screen is a welcome one By Christy Lemire AP Movie Critic

The Last Stand is the Arnold Schwarzenegger movie you didn’t even realize you wanted to see. This is the action superstar’s first leading role in a decade, having left acting to serve as the governor of California and whatnot, and while it may not have occurred to you to miss him during that time, it’s still surprisingly good to see him on the big screen again. He is not exactly pushing himself here. Korean director Kim Jee-woon’s American filmmaking debut turns out to be an extremely Schwarzeneggerish Schwarzenegger film, full of big, violent set pieces and broad comedy. He may look a little creaky

(and facially freaky) these days, but Arnold proves he’s still game for the mayhem as he fires off rounds and tosses off one-liners, and the movie at least has the decency to acknowledge that it knows that you know that he’s old. The script also feels a bit old — The Last Stand is essentially an amped-up version of Rio Bravo, with some Jackassstyle high jinks courtesy of Johnny Knoxville himself. But Kim keeps things moving briskly and the members of the strong supporting cast don’t seem to mind that they’re playing flimsy types. Everyone’s just here for a mindless good time. Schwarzenegger stars as Ray Owens, sheriff of the tiny Arizona border town of Sommerton Junction, the kind of place where everyone knows everyone and the locals sit around the diner trading folksy jokes. That’s why the sheriff is immediately suspicious of

some visitors sharing a booth over breakfast one morning — they clearly don’t belong there. Andrew Knauer’s script makes some passing mention of Owens’ past career as a highly decorated Los Angeles police narcotics detective, which is intended to explain why this mild-mannered guy with the thick accent is such a bad-ass. Turns out these new folks (led by Peter Stormare) are there laying the groundwork for Mexican drug kingpin Gabriel Cortez (Eduardo Noriega), who’s just escaped federal custody in Las Vegas in elaborate fashion. He’s headed straight for the border

at Sommerton with a hostage in the passenger seat in a stolen, souped-up Corvette that can reach speeds of 250 mph. While FBI agent John Bannister (Forest Whitaker) and his crew try in vain to chase Cortez, the sheriff and his makeshift posse set up a barricade. And they wait. His team consists of the innocent newbie (Zach Gilford), the grumpy veteran (Luis Guzman), the pretty and capable female deputy (Jaimie Alexander), her screw-up ex-boyfriend who happens to be in the town’s lone jail cell (Rodrigo Santoro) and the wacko with an arsenal who gives his weapons pet names. That would be Knoxville. That this scrappy band of underdogs can take out the more technologically advanced villain and his crew should come as no surprise. It’s as predictable as Arnold saying he’ll be back, and making good on that promise.

Last haven Together, women of ‘Bluefish Cove’ greet life, love and death By Lucinda Breeding Features Editor

For director Sharon Veselic, Last Summer at Bluefish Cove is a trip back in time creatively. “I did this show 30 years ago in New York City. I was a stage manager, and I had no idea how important a show it was,” Veselic said. “I thought it was just another show.” When the drama by Jane Chambers

debuted in New York City, it was 1980. The AIDS epidemic was just beginning to emerge in America. Gay people were starting to gain visibility. And Chambers, a playwright and television screenwriter, broke ground with Bluefish Cove, a bittersweet play about a group of lesbians and their last summer at their beachside retreat. Veselic is typically at the helm of big Rogers & Hammerstein musicals for Denton Community Theatre. Bluefish Cove is a change of pace — and budget. For starters, it’s at the PointBank Black Box Performing Arts Center, a humble space that seats maybe 100 See COVE on 12

Cove people at the most. “I’ve been up here for years doing the musicals because I love them,” Veselic said. “But recently I started wondering what kind of shows we might do for women. How many times can you do Steel Magnolias? It’s a wonderful show, but it’s done a lot. There’s not a whole lot out there for women.” Bluefish Cove launched the career of Jean Smart (Designing Women), and also gave actress Susan Sullivan (Castle) a chance to show she was more than a gorgeous blonde. Bluefish Cove explores the tectonic shift in the life of recent divorcee Eva as she joins a secret little burgh inhabited by a group of lesbian couples and Lil, a smart and charming single who’s dated a few of her beachfront friends. Eva takes a shine to Lil. Lil reciprocates, but keeps a crucial secret that seems destined to devastate Eva. Veselic said returning to the play made her appreciate Chambers’ story. The characters are gay women for whom

being out and proud comes with serious risks, but it’s a love story with self-discovery at the heart of the story. “I’m so sick of Rent and The Laramie Project,” Veselic said. Both have been important works in American theater, but Bluefish Cove isn’t a big show about tolerance or equal rights. “We’re not hitting the audience over the head with the ‘lesbian hammer.’ I’m not preaching,” she said. “What interested me in doing the show is the theater. It’s the story.” Veselic led the actresses in preparing for show about honest, flawed relationships. Each actress talked about her relationships, and how they changed and challenged them. The conversations acquainted actress with actress, and helped each player develop the kind of comfortable, broken-in relationships that come from a sense of trust and community. Kris Walters, as the witty and

guarded Lil, plays off of Kami Rogers, who inhabits the role of Lil’s longtime friend (but never lover) Annie with warmth and honesty. RoseAnne Holman and Kelsey Jones are water and oil as the play’s December-May couple. The role of feminist writer Kitty could have tilted too shrill, but actress Kristin Spires pulls back just in time, perhaps tempered by Jordan Desmarais’ depiction of Kitty’s secretary and girlfriend, Rita. Resentment flares up between the hyper-educated Kitty and the just-as-smart but younger Rita. In fact, resentments and insecurities bubble up in all the couples, but Chambers’ characters are still in the grip of love. Veselic kept the staging simple. A dock does double duty as beach house decks and a fishing pier. Projections suggest a pretty cove shrouded by trees and hills. Bluefish Cove’s bungalows

Veselic said the shoestring budget has required the directorial team to call in favors and bring in some of their own clothes and set pieces. “I think it’s fun,” Veselic said. “When is the last time you had to call someone to borrow something for a show? It’s brought us back to the reason we do theater. We do it because we love to do theater. I’ve got a
