t’s never too soon to introduce child to music — even from birth. Early childhood music classes for newborns through 5year-olds begin Feb. 5 at the University of North Texas College of Music. The Saturday morning classes for children and their parents continue through April 16. According to instructor Heidi Scheibmeir, the program helps children build a strong musical foundation. Children can observe and absorb music-making through a variety of activities that explore singing, listening and movement using trampolines, scarves and drumsticks. Even those too young to participate will benefit from the exposure. The deadline for enrollment is Feb. 1. Classes for infants, from birth to 24 months, are $120 per child. Classes are $140 for nursery age, 25 to 48 months; and for preschoolers, ages 3 1/2 to 5 years. A 10 percent discount is offered for each additional family member. Spots are available in these classes: infant, 9 to 9:30 a.m. infant, 10:35 to 11:05 a.m. nursery, 11:15 to 11:55 a.m. preschool, noon to 12:45 p.m. Children can also experiment with instruments from noon to 12:05 p.m. The 9:45 a.m. nursery class is full. For registration forms, visit http://music.unt.edu/musiced /ecmusic. For more information, contact Scheibmeir at ecmusic@ unt.edu or 940-391-4085. — Staff report

Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger — from left, Charlotte Kemp Muhl and Sean Lennon with C.J. Camerieri — performs last Tuesday night at Dan’s Silverleaf.

Legend hovers but doesn’t overshadow Gig proves band’s merits, although name lends cachet By Shannon Goleman Staff Writer

There was a threat of a lot of talent being overlooked Tuesday night in Denton. Of course, the show sold out early and the house was packed — some even knelt at the foot of the stage when no other space was available — but honestly, many were there because of the famous last name of one of the members of the headlining band. Although he looks and sounds like many 30-some-

things in Denton, there is no getting around the fact that Sean Lennon — who, along with his girlfriend, Charlotte Kemp Muhl, is Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger — is the only offspring of John Lennon and Yoko Ono. Listening to the conversations around Dan’s Silverleaf as the crowd filed in, it was apparent this legacy had brought many of them there. Had the audience members allowed their expectations to filter their experience, they might have missed the undeniable natural talent this Lennon possesses, or how C.J. Camerieri’s precision on an array of horns was an

While the crowd would not have been as large without the draw of being in the same room as music royalty, once they were there, the audience was quickly and pleasantly surprised. Thankfully, on this night at least, the lineage that gave Lennon his interest in music didn’t keep people from appreciating his unique talent for it.

OPENING FRIDAY

All Good Things (###1/2) Unequal parts family drama, mystery and creepy character study, this compelling film from Andrew Jarecki chronicles a fact-based story with a Texas tie-in, and sports fine performances from the two leads: Ryan Gosling and Kirsten Dunst. David Marks (Gosling) comes from established New York wealth when he marries upstart unknown Katie (Dunst). Eventually, she goes missing and David disappears to Galveston under shady circumstances. Unpredictable and unsettling. Rated R, 101 minutes. At Angelika Dallas. — Boo Allen And Everything is Going Fine (###) For the second time in his career, Steven Soderbergh pays tribute to the late monologist Spalding Gray (who worked with the director on Gray’s Anatomy in 1996), crafting a biopic of sorts from archival footage and editing it essentially into the form of a final monologue about Gray’s unique outlook on the world six years after his death. Fans of Gray’s work should see the film. For others, even Soderbergh’s minor efforts are noteworthy, if typically uneven. Not rated, 89 minutes. At the Texas Theatre. — Todd Jorgenson Dogtooth (###1/2) Bizarre and at times very disturbing low-budget dark comedy from Greece about a family whose parents keep their three teenage children hostage in their own home, not allowing contact with the outside world, which leads to strange acts of rebellion and obsession. The calculated direction of Giorgos Lanthimos becomes heavy-handed, yet the film is never less than compelling, mostly because it’s so perversely twisted and unpredictable. However, it’s not for all tastes. Not rated, 94 minutes. At the Texas Theatre. — T.J. Leaving (###) Strong performances elevate this slight character study about an affluent French therapist (Kristin Scott Thomas) who starts an affair with a Spanish handyman (Sergi Lopez), leading to retaliation once she confesses to her husband (Yvan Attal). The love triangle structure is familiar, and director Catherine Corsini’s attempts at injecting suspense mostly fall flat. Yet there are some fine intimate moments between characters, and Scott Thomas projects plenty of emotional depth. Not rated, 82 minutes. At the Fort

Caution, men at work ‘Company’ probes dangers of chronic unemployment By Boo Allen Film Critic

The Company Men Rated R, 109 minutes. Opens Friday.

lmost all of us can recognize, and maybe even identify with, the characters in The Company Men, the somber new sociological study from writer-director John Wells. A recession, subsequent layoffs, long-term unemployment, stress, family arguments, feelings of failure — they all add up to creating a bleak picture not just of the men in the movie but also of many in our society. The Company Men creates a feeling of purpose and becomes more than actors simply going

through motions to tell a story. That is, now-familiar situations pose real dilemmas: How is our family going to survive, make the mortgage, and will we be able to buy our son an Xbox, or send our daughter to college, and, most pressingly: Will I ever work again? Of course, not all of these problems could be answered cinematically in less than two hours, but of the characters who come under the employment knife, some survive and

last? Rated R, 108 minutes. The Way Back At the dawn of World War II, four prisoners of war escape the Siberian gulags and cross the Himalayas on foot to freedom. With Jim Sturgess, Ed Harris, Colin Farrell and Saoirse Ronan. Rated PG-13, 133 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas.

some thrive — but some don’t. Maybe a quaint message of maintaining true grit and longterm perspective in the face of unemployment can be gleaned, but that doesn’t mean the message does not strike home when it is personal. Ben Affleck plays Bobby Walker, a well-paid corporate salesman who unexpectedly loses his job. He then denies his unemployable status, turning arrogant in job interviews and refusing to cut back. As he heads down a selfdestructive path, others at his firm also begin to find themselves following him to unemployment. With Bobby Walker as his center, director Wells flips among others, such as Phil Woodward (Chris Cooper), a longtime executive who

worked his way up from the bottom and is also a friend of the boss, Gene McClary (Tommy Lee Jones). Wells examines how the men handle their new situations, how their personal lives disassemble and how some bounce back though some never do. It’s true that most of those suffering misfortune come from higher income brackets, but a Shakespearean coda dictates that their falls make greater descents. As a midlevel survivor, Maria Bello invades the all-boys-club cast, which also includes Kevin Costner as a blue-collar stiff who keeps working, paying his bills and not complaining.

(Kevin James) can’t make a commitment to his girlfriend (Winona Ryder), who Ronny discovers is having an affair with a younger man. There are some laughs and agreeable performances, even if the script is predictable and lacking a consistent tone. Rated PG-13, 111 minutes. — T.J.

“The way glass transmits color, transparency, opacity — all of those things — glass does those things the way no painting medium does,” said Keens, who directs the glass program in the University of Texas at Arlington. Keens’ solo show demonstrates the versatility of glass, as well as its ability to tell a powerful story. For the artist, the show “David Keens: Looking Back” is personal, political and everything in between. All the work was made in the last two years, but the body of work is an autobiography as well, touching on his childhood and his experience during the Vietnam War. Most of the pieces in the exhibit suggest tornadoes, shattering and flinging sheets of colored glass. Where those pieces — actually hundreds of tiny, handmade glass tiles fused into imperfect sheets of glass — will land is up to the viewer’s imagination. “I use the vortex form for a number of reasons,” Keens said. “They’re beautiful, they’re hypnotic, they’re terrifying, but they also have to do with the fear of the unknown, the unpredictability of life. But they’re figures, too. They’re vessels. They’re like everything I do — they have different layers of meaning.” The tornadoes waltz on water, spin on top of a bed and suck beds into the metaphorical sky. Colored, fused glass

shaped like kayaks and canoes are repeated in the work. “The beds and boats are in a lot of my work because I’m fascinated by that window of time when you put your head on the pillow and start dreaming,” the artist said. “The boats suggest that moment where you’re launched, and, again, that moment when you lose control.” Keens’ exhibit shows his fluency in glass making. He uses cast glass in pieces such as St. Sebastian Does the Bristol Stomp and in a piece about the school where he learned to swim as a boy. He cast brown glass to make the wooden floorboards of his middle school gymnasium, and aquamarine waves to reflect on the water where he learned his first swimming strokes. “That piece of glass took seven years,” he said. “It kept breaking. There are a lot of frustrations in doing this kind of work.” Even more delicate are the tornado shapes. Keens borrows a glass-blowing technique, heating glass to a liquid, then using a pastorelli carrier — a long rod that glass artists use to hold glass over heat — turning it as it melts into a spiral of rounded glass. The glass hardens as it cools. When forming the colorful tornadoes, Keens uses the Murano technique to make small tiles, melting glass into a liquid in a kiln, adding thin layers of glass to create patterns, and the look of an image trapped in amber. Any high school student would think of the touchscreen cellphone applications were they to glance at the fused glass tiles, bearing bright blues, greens and pinks. But to Keens, the tiles represent memories

from his own life. Some are fused together, but plenty are separated by air. Then there are the pieces that speak to Keens’ experience of the Vietnam War. Tale of 1969 is an intricate piece. Numbered tags — about 300 of them — represent the first numbers in the nation’s first draft for the Vietnam War. Keens’ number, 172, is underlined in red. In front of the numbers stand lurking mummies. One mummy is standing among glass leaves. Its neighbor is swaying over a pile of black licorice. “The mummies represent evil power. There was a Boris Karloff movie where Karloff played a priest who would revive mummies to do his bidding — for evil,” Keens said. “He would give them a potion made of tana leaves. That’s why you see the leaves here.” The licorice is from the artist’s past. “My brother was in medical school when the war was going on, and he told me that if I ate a bunch of licorice, it would lower my blood pressure and I’d fail the physical. I still remember eating licorice until I threw up, then ate more licorice until I threw that up, too. Just eating and eating licorice,” he said. All the stunt got him was a sick stomach and a distaste for black licorice. The doctor who screened him for the draft declared him in perfect shape to serve. The draft and Vietnam come up again in another piece, Tale of 1970, that presents two pair of men’s briefs cast in clear glass. One of the pair includes a number 9. The other bears 172. They represent the humiliation of the military physical that lined up hundreds of young men in their underwear. Keens also cast his own wallet — this time in heavy See GLASS on 10

It was like having to show your papers to the Gestapo. That’s how it felt to me,” he said. Keens was one of many antiwar protesters who didn’t want to serve in Vietnam. The two Tales pieces are the only ones in the show that don’t use bright colors. The Denton-based Visual Arts Society of Texas invited Keens to be the gala artist for the year based on both his art and reputation. “We became familiar with David in 2007 when he was named the state artist,” said Lynn Cagle Cox, executive director of the society. “I saw the work, liked it and wanted to get it in here. But I also wanted to get someone [to be the featured artist for the annual gala] who would fit in with the artists we’ve brought in before. David was definitely of that caliber.” Keens has taught at UTArlington since 1974, and built the art glass program.
