his weekend, Texas Woman’s University opens its third play of the season — a work by graduate student Paul Engle. Engle’s play, Dissonance, is about a character named Monty who has fallen on hard times and isn’t so sure he is strong enough to persevere. But if he can find the will to live, he might have something to live for. Encounters with God and the Devil make his choice more urgent and the stakes higher.

The show is presented as a staged reading, with staging by graduate student Ariana Cook. The small cast of Dissonance explores the human connection to love and a higher power, and characters wrestle with suicide and redemption. The cast includes Jacob Drum, Heather Alverson, Rene Sarradet and Christina Garcia. Shawney Rogers will read the stage directions and

here’s something incurably hopeful and happy about Mount Righteous. The indie-pop nine-piece unabashedly borrows jingleworthy hooks, stirs them into jutting rhythms and isn’t too cool for the marching band. (Mount Righteous comes complete with marching bass drum, and it also offers definitive proof that the tuba can be cool.) The band — based in Grapevine but with ties to Denton — plays Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studios on Friday night, headlining a show put together by Gutterth Live. Mount Righteous has a when-carnivals-go-wild sort of sound — a lot of carefully plotted dissonance, perky vocals and loads of toy instrument-sounding effects. There’s a punk ethos to the self-titled second album, and a riskier approach to their core sound altogether. The bottom line is that Mount Righteous seems to be conceived and born to rock the house show or whip festival crowds into a full-on frolic, complete with bubbleblowing and beach-ball

tion to support a Czech university in Brno. Levicek was born in Brno and was recognized as a piano talent as a child. He made his first solo performance appearances with Czech Republic orchestras at ages 11 and 15. He was invited to study piano at the Janacek Academy of Music and Performing Arts, where he earned a degree. He earned his artist certificate and master’s degree at the UNT College of Music, where he is now pursuing a doctoral degree. Concert admission is free, but donations are accepted. Levicek has won several piano competitions in the United States and abroad, including the first prize in the International Piano Competition for the Leos Janacek Award. At that contest, Levicek was recognized for giving the best performance of Janacek music. For more information, visit www.lewisvillsymphony.org. — Lucinda Breeding

ou know how your heart rate spikes when the contestants on Top Chef hustle through the “quick fire” challenge? You know, that contest where cooks have to create a tasty dish in 30 minutes with a surprise ingredient and a limited pantry? Take that concept and superimpose it onto a musical. (Imagine Ryan Murphy visiting the set of Glee with an assignment to cast, write music, rehearse and perform an episode in 24 hours.) That’s One Night Stand: Creating a Play in a Day in a nutshell. Night Stand to 450 movie houses Wednesday. The broadcast is one part sketch comedy by high-caliber vets and one part behind-the-scenes documentary. Four teams of composers, writers, directors and actors use props to inspire the musi-

cals: a zoot suit worn by Kind on a children’s show in the 1970s inspires the “Islands” musical; a phobia pop-up book is the premise for “Multiphobia,” and an ’80s prom dress prop is used in “Dr. Williams,” featuring Jackson, Ferguson and Roger Bart

(Revenge). Dratch brings her comedic timing to the fourth musical, “Rachel Said Sorry.” Tickets cost $11.50 for adults and $10.50 for students and seniors. One Night Stand is rated R. Cinemark 14 is located at 2825 Wind River Lane.

just before the Civil War. It’s Tarantino at his most puerile and least inventive, with the premise offering little more than cold, nasty revenge and barrels of squishing, squirting blood. Performances by Foxx, Leonardo DiCaprio, Christoph Waltz and Samuel L. Jackson make the film intermittently entertaining. Rated R, 165 minutes. — AP Gangster Squad (##) This pulpy, violent tale of cops and mobsters in 1949 Los Angeles rides an uncomfortable line between outlandishness and outright parody, and it’s difficult to tell which is director Ruben Fleischer’s intention. While the film wallows in period detail and has some sporadic moments of amusing banter, it’s mostly flashy, empty and cacophonous, and it woefully wastes a strong cast led by Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone in barely developed, one-note roles. With a cartoony Sean Penn as mob king Mickey Cohen and Brolin as a police sergeant tasked with putting together a secret team to take down Cohen’s empire. MOVIES Continued from Page 7 Freeman as young Bilbo Baggins. Bilbo joins an army of dwarfs and Gandalf the Grey (Ian McKellen) for a long march and multiple battles to prove his bravery. As usual, Jackson delivers a technically remarkable film, filled with memorable costumes and sets. Rated PG13, 166 minutes. — Boo Allen Jack Reacher (####) Clever, well-crafted and darkly humorous, Jack Reacher features one of those effortless performances from Tom Cruise that remind us that he is indeed a movie star. OK, so maybe Cruise doesn’t exactly resemble the Reacher of British novelist Lee Child’s books, but Christopher McQuarrie’s film moves so fluidly and with such confidence, it’ll suck you in from the start. Besides being a mind teaser, Jack Reacher offers the muscular thrills of a ‘70s action flick, including fight scenes and a thrilling, prolonged car chase through the streets of downtown Pittsburgh. Rated PG-13, 130 minutes. — AP The Last Stand (###1/2) It’s the Arnold Schwarzenegger movie you didn’t even realize you wanted to see. His return to the screen — and Korean director Kim Jee-woon’s American filmmaking debut — is essentially an amped-up version of Rio Bravo, with some Jackass-style high jinks courtesy of Johnny Knoxville himself. A Mexican drug kingpin (Eduardo Noriega) daringly escapes federal custody and heads for a quiet Arizona border town where Schwarzenegger, as the sheriff, rounds up a posse of misfits to stop him. Rated R, 107 minutes. — AP Les Miserables (###) Tom Hooper (The King’s Speech) directed this big, brassy version of the stage musical with Hugh Jackman playing Jean Valjean, the wanted man followed and persecuted by the obsessive Inspector Javert (Russell Crowe). The film’s production values make the film visually engaging while the music never stops. With Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried, Helena Bonham Carter and Sacha Baron Cohen. Rated PG-13, 157 minutes. — B.A. Life of Pi (##1/2) Ang Lee directs from Yann Martel’s allegorical novel about a boy, Pi Patel (Suraj Sharma), who travels with his family from India to Canada. A shipwreck lands him in a small boat with a group of zoo animals, all quickly reduced to a tiger. Man and beast coexist, supposedly giving Zen-like life lessons to the boy, who grows into a man (Irrfan Khan) who tells the story in flashback. Moderately entertaining pseudospiritual diversion with elaborate but not particularly awe-inspiring special effects. Rated PG, 127 minutes. — B.A. Lincoln (####) This is more a wonky, nuts-and-bolts lesson about the way political machinery operates than a sweeping historical epic that tries to encapsulate the entirety of the revered 16th presi-

dent’s life. That was a smart move on the part of Steven Spielberg and Pulitzer-winning screenwriter Tony Kushner. Talky and intimate but also surprisingly funny, Lincoln focuses on the final four months of Abraham Lincoln’s life, and Daniel Day-Lewis inhabits the role fully. With Tommy Lee Jones, James Spader, John Hawkes and David Strathairn. Rated PG-13, 150 minutes. — AP Mama Jessica Chastain plays a woman caring for two traumatized sisters who may be haunted by an evil force. Rated PG-13, 100 minutes. — AP Parental Guidance There’s something touching about how hard Billy Crystal and Bette Midler hustle to peddle the threadbare material that makes Parental Guidance a perfectly tolerable, if uninspired, moviegoing experience. Artie (Crystal) and his wife, Diane (Midler), have been recruited to baby-sit their daughter Alice’s (Marisa Tomei) three kids. Rated PG, 104 minutes. — The Hollywood Reporter Silver Linings Playbook (##) Writer-director David O. Russell takes Matthew Quick’s novel about a man (Bradley Cooper) with bipolar disorder who returns from a mental facility to live with his doting mother (Jacki Weaver) and his Philadelphia Eagles-obsessed father (Robert DeNiro). Add another unstable, seemingly unsuited love interest (Jennifer Lawrence) and the results are abrasive histrionics, much yelling and consistent inconsistency. Rated R, 122 minutes. — B.A. Skyfall (###1/2) Daniel Craig returns as James Bond in the 23rd film based on 007’s exploits. Britain’s MI6 comes under attack, with M (Judi Dench) as the chief target. Bond finds and brings back the villain (Javier Bardem), but that just sets the stage for further action and adventure. Between the action sequences, director Sam Mendes takes time to build a personal drama that distinguishes this Bond film from its predecessors. Rated PG-13, 143 minutes. — B.A. This Is 40 (##1/2) Theoretically, this moderately funny domestic comedy follows two characters, Pete (Paul Rudd) and Debbie (Leslie Mann), a few years after their appearance in writer-director Judd Apatow’s Knocked Up. Here, Apatow seems to be revealing all, milking his own life for its crotch gags and bathroom humor as the couple approach their 40th birthdays. Apatow’s and Mann’s two daughters even appear as Pete and Debbie’s offspring. Rated R, 134 minutes. — B.A. Zero Dark Thirty (###) Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker) directed this movie concerned with the years-long process behind finding and then executing Osama bin Laden. Jessica Chastain stars as the dedicated CIA agent who doggedly continued on a long and tedious journey to piece together the clues that will lead to the film’s final, well-executed assassination sequence. With an excellent supporting cast. Rated R, 157 minutes. — B.A.

n 2008, Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar turned their huge brood into a spectacle of sorts on the reality television series 19 Kids and Counting. It wasn’t so long ago that another real-life family had almost more children than they could count on two hands. Denton Community Theatre brings that popular and well-

loved big family to the stage in Cheaper by the Dozen, opening on Friday. The comedy is based on the real-life Gilbreth brood of New Jersey in the 1920s. Julie Crawford, former executive director of Denton Community Theatre and current See CHEAPER on 10

Cheaper director of the American Association of Community Theatre, returns to direct what she describes as “a memory piece. “It really is written that way, Crawford said. “At the top of every scene, there are two of the grown Gilbreth children remembering what we’re about to see. Much of the comedy in the play is found in parents Frank and Lillian Gilbreth applying philosophies of their livelihood — time study and efficiency — onto their family life. And when Frank Sr. isn’t coaching his children to do the most mundane things (taking a bath or unpacking parcels) as efficiently as possible, the mom and dad are grappling with rearing a family in rapidly changing times. Frank wants his oldest daughter, 16-year-old Anne, to get through her teen years without getting her hair bobbed, wearing lipstick or perfume. Frank Bunker Gilbreth Jr. and his sister, Ernestine Gilbreth Carey, wrote the book Cheaper by the Dozen, which inspired a number of stage and film adaptations. Clifton Webb and Myrna Loy played the patriarch and matriarch (Frank Sr. and Lillian) of the sprawling Gilbreth clan in the 1950 film version. Steve Martin and

Bonnie Hunt took on the parental roles in an updated version from 2003 and its sequel. Crawford said auditions brought about 50 people into the Campus Theatre for auditions, “particularly teenage girls, she said. In the play, the audience sees nine of the Gilbreth children. There’s a baby “upstairs, Crawford said, who isn’t seen by the audience. The youngest actor onstage is 6. Crawford said she guided the performers through the ensemble piece, with Pat Watson in the role of Frank Sr. and Susanne Coffey as Lillian. At the heart of the play, the director said, is the simple value of family. “They have a happy family, Crawford said. “The children are all growing up, going through the things all children go through as they grow up. They think they have the strictest father in town, but there is a lot of love. It’s a happy family. Because she approached the play as a memory piece, Crawford said the set design suggests a two-story home — but the audience isn’t meant to see “every single wall. She credits costume designer Nelda Evarts for doing rafts of research on the play, the era the family lived in and the clothes they would have worn. The 1920s were more formal. Men wore three-piece
