Healing music

Students sing in concert for charity that aids young refugees

U

niversity of North Texas and local elementary students will make music together this Friday — for a good cause. They hope to raise money and awareness through this concert for the Shropshire Music Foundation, a nonprofit that spreads peace through music by providing instruments and training to refugees and former child soldiers in war-torn countries, specifically Kosovo, Northern Ireland and Uganda. The Green Tones, a UNT coed contemporary 16-member vocal ensemble, will sing several a capella numbers. They’ll also join 35 students from Nelson, Rivera, Providence and Lake Dallas elementary schools and Lewisville ISD for “Lean on Me,” “Peace Like a River” and “The Lion Sleeps Tonight,” accompanied by bongos and guitar. The event is organized by UNT Students for the Shropshire Music Foundation. President Brittney Balkcom formed the group two years ago after attending a presentation given at the College of Music by the charity’s founder, Liz Shropshire. The Los Angeles-based composer and music teacher comes to UNT every year at the invitation of flute professor Terri Sundberg, who has given concerts in Kosovo on behalf of the foundation. Balkcom, a UNT senior, said she was “very surprised” to learn that Shropshire has been able to help more than 10,000 young people since her foundation began as a one-person

operation in 1999. “One person really can make the big changes,” said Balkcom. “I wanted to help her out.” Her interest led to her to create the student group, an official UNT-sponsored organization. So far, the group has raised $1,000 for the Shropshire Music Foundation through two fundraisers at Andy’s Bar and an art auction. For this concert, Balkcom contacted area choir directors and invited their students to participate. She said she received a positive response from many of the directors, who are “very excited” about participating and have been helping their students learn the music. Local businesses, including Ravelin Bakery, Davis Purity Bakery and Hannah’s Off the Square, have donated gift cards for the event’s silent auction, which will begin before the concert. Shropshire will give a brief

presentation and show a short video at the Friday evening event. She will also share her experience and insights in helping war victims through music in a discussion from 10 to 11 a.m.

Minneapolis’ Peter Wolf Crier looks for bare essence in song

By Lucinda Breeding Features Editor

“I

f someone isn’t insecure when they’re between relationships, they don’t freak out about not being in a relationship. That’s how I look at creative dry spells,” said Peter Pisano, the Peter of Peter Wolf Crier. Peter Wolf Crier is Pisano and Brian Moen. The Minneapolis duo released Inter-Be, a moody indie album that doesn’t short folk-rock fans on impressionistic songs or depth. The duo will play Hailey’s Club on Friday night with the Retribution Gospel Choir and Les Americains. “I was teaching before I moved to Minneapolis,” Pisano said. “I’d had a life in Wisconsin, but it dawned on me that I couldn’t stick around. When I couldn’t be creatively active, when I couldn’t be part of a creative community, that was anxiety-producing for me. When you’re in a situation where you can’t look up to anyone creatively, that’s way harder than a dry spell.” Inter-Be grew out of songs Pisano wrote and then shared

“When you’re in a situation where you can’t look up to anyone creatively, that’s way harder than a dry spell.” — Peter Pisano of Peter Wolf Crier with Moen. When Moen said he’d record them with Pisano, the game was afoot. And there was some Sherlock-style deduction in making the record, which burned tracks that are intimate and confessional. “Crutch and Cane” is a stripped-down love letter from a man who admits his penchant for leaning on all the wrong things but who wants to stand on his own. Pisano and Moen sing: “I find it now and now but less these days/A fearless failure can sometimes have his way/At my best I am you/Not just one, all of you/You who tore away/my crutch and cane.” Inter-Be is a meditation on the way pleasure and pain can be stirred into the same stew. In “Hard as Nails,” a bobbing beat trails into a mournful, a cappella cry when the narrator loves with body, brain and soul but is rejected: “Behind the

shed I offer you/my name/but you refuse/Kindly you watch over me/Mary mother, saint to be.” Pisano said he and Moen achieved an honesty on the album by not aiming for perfection in every part of the recording. “Brian bought an acoustic piano for 100 bucks, and we didn’t even really consider ourselves keyboardists. Well, what am I saying? I know I’m not a pianist,” he said. “It’s not an instrument either of us feel totally comfortable playing, but we both play a little.” Yet there was something appealing and innocent about the instrument. “It’s very difficult to make popular music that sounds vulnerable. We’ve gotten through some of those barriers with the instrumentation,” Pisano said. “On a lot of these tracks, you

can hear someone playing piano. It sounds very human. We made some mistakes because we’re not pianists, and those were mistakes we make very naturally, and decided not to try to cover it up. That’s the exciting way to make music, as far as I’m concerned.” Peter Wolf Crier has toured with acts like Bon Iver and Denton’s Midlake — a band of musicians Pisano says he can admire. “When we were on tour with Bon Iver and Freelance Whales, those guys will tell you that the guys in Midlake are … music geeks. The guys in Midlake know their stuff — other musicians respect what they do,” he said. Sounds like: Iron and Wine locked in an attic with a music box and a snare drum; Lindsey Buckingham licking wounds after a romance ends.

unk Nug is just the kind of thing that would grow out of the black gumbo of central Denton. The drum and bass funk duo came together after Bobby Ilami and Joe Gardner met through a mutual friend. Things clicked between the two music buffs, and two years ago the men formed a band. “I had a house on Bernard Street and was jamming with all sorts of bands, and Joe was filling in with a bunch of bands,” Ilami said. “Joe would show up for all these house parties and he’d come up and play. Finally, we put a band together.” Funk Nug is sort of a curiosity in a music town with bands that hit the stage with lots of musicians. RTB2, a popular Denton two-piece, earns lots of talk about the big sound-to-small-band ratio. Funk Nug can unload more sound that listeners might expect. Ilami is a technical funk drummer, moving both hands and feet at different tempos. “After I’m done, I’m drenched in sweat,” Ilami said. Gardner keeps a lead line thumping, and sometimes plays the bass line with one hand and treble with the

other, all on his bass guitar. The band plays Saturday night at Hailey’s Club, ending a month of Saturdays at the downtown bar. The band’s musical mission is to dance all over the funk music map. Ilami said the group has a blues funk set, a jazz funk set, a punk funk set and a set that mixes it all into a cocktail of beats and attitude. Ilami said the duo’s music — and its upcoming recording — are a marriage of the musicians’ passions. “My musical tastes are super eclectic,” Ilami said. “Joe leans toward punk funk. When we play, sometimes it’s my job to sit back, play the tempo and let Joe go nuts. And then sometimes Joe will play the rhythm and I fill out the music with a lot of different sounds.” Ilami said the band has a bigger vision than churning out albums. They recently outfitted their studio with professional-grade recording software and equipment. They also launched Funknug Records, a production and recording company to promote music and visual artists

exclusively from Denton. Ilami said the business not only organizes shows and art exhibitions and records and mixes music, but also deliberately supports Denton businesses in doing all of those things. The bottom line for the business is affordability for artists, Ilami said. Ilami is also an additional booking agent for Hailey’s. He started finding substitutes for musicians who can’t make local gigs — even on short notice. The real joy is making music, he said, and starting a label that considers profits second to artistic enrichment and cohesion in the arts community. Ilami wouldn’t mind if Funknug Records grew. “I’d love for Funknug to be known nationally,” he said. “I’d love for people to be jealous that we serve only Denton artists.” Sounds like: Two funkjazz guys who prefer to walk the tightrope — no net, thanks. Details: Funk Nug plays at 11 p.m. Saturday at Hailey’s Club, 122 W. Mulberry St. Cover is $5. Visit the band’s website at www.funknug.com. — Lucinda Breeding

horeographer and dancer Garth Fagan was born in Jamaica. The dance that made him famous is as much of a melting pot as America itself. Fagan’s name might not send up any flags of recognition, and yet millions have seen Fagan’s work and called it art. In 1998, Fagan won three major awards for his choreography in the Broadway adaptation of Walt Disney’s The Lion King: the Drama Desk Award for outstanding choreography, the Outer Circle Critics Award for best choreography and the Tony Award for best choreography. Director Julie Taymor (Frida, Across the Universe) was celebrated for the theatrical puppets she developed for The Lion King, but it was Fagan who taught the actors to move like the beasts of Africa. Garth Fagan’s dance company will spend 2011 celebrating 40 years of dance. One such celebration will be at the University of North Texas at 8 p.m. Tuesday. A bonus for dance and theater lovers: The company performs at the University Theatre in the Radio, TV, Film and Performing Arts Building. Patrons will see breath, sinew and sweat as the company resurrects some of Fagan’s earlier work. The company will also show dances Fagan is cooking in the 21st century. What put the choreographer and the

company on the American arts map was Fagan’s ability to consider his life — not to mention the world — through his experiences in New York City. He saw that the real-life Emerald City — a place of progress and possibility, where all your dreams could come true — was also home to ghetto, barrio and burrow. In his landmark works like From Before, created in the late 1970s, Fagan put the human condition in the torso — the house of the heart, belly and libido. Anchoring movement in the torso paid tribute to Fagan’s West Indies heritage. It also created a counterweight to George Balanchine’s choreography. Balanchine drew the eye of his audience away from the pelvis when he built a ballet. Fagan’s dancers trained their middles to wiggle, snap and groove in the AfroCaribbean style. Their choreographer and dance master, however, rendered his ethnic form through the poetry of the god-

mother’s of modern dance: Isadora Duncan and Martha Graham. Fagan was influenced as well by Alvin Ailey, the standard for high-flying modern dance, and Jose Limon. When Fagan’s dancer’s performed, they didn’t hide behind costumes. Their bodies were the page, the canvas and the picture tube. By 1998, Fagan’s dance and dancers literally became page, canvas and picture tube as Taymor covered them in Disney’s Technicolor palette. The UNT Fine Arts Series presents the company, and when audiences settle back in their seats, they can expect nimble feet that beat the floor like a drum, limbs conditioned to stretch by ballet and a fire in the belly made real. Tickets to the performance are $30 for adults, and $15 for UNT faculty, staff and non-UNT students. Admission is free for UNT students who show ID. OPENING FRIDAY Another Year (###) In his Oscarnominated screenplay, master British filmmaker Mike Leigh chronicles a year in the life of a happily married, well-adjusted couple (Jim Broadbent and Ruth Sheen). They merrily plod along while chaos seems to hover nearby in the form of an alcoholic friend (a terrific Lesley Manville), a bumbling visitor (Peter Wight) and a reclusive brother (David Bradley). Meanwhile, their son visits, they work their garden, and everything seems fine until it isn’t. Rated PG-13, 129 minutes. At the Magnolia and Angelika Plano. — Boo Allen Biutiful (###1/2) In Barcelona, a man (Javier Bardem, in an Oscarnominated role) suffering from cancer learns his time left is shorter than expected. He must then clear up a messy personal life, including an irresponsible former wife who would then be left with their children. Plus, he becomes snarled in a death caused by human trafficking. The latest from Alejandro Inarritu (Babel, 21 Grams) examines the cascading effects of an impending tragedy. Also Oscar-nominated for best foreign language film. Rated R, 147 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — B.A. Ip Man 2: Legend of the Grandmaster (##1/2) Cheesy but amusing sequel to the 2008 chopsocky hit sees Donnie Yen reprising his role as a Wing Chun martial-arts master, this time moving to Hong Kong in 1949, where old enemies interrupt his attempt to start a new life. The story is predictable and formulaic throughout, and the filmmaking is generally haphazard, but the real highlights here are Yen’s innovative fight sequences, which should suffice for fans of the original. Rated R, 108 minutes. At the Cinemark 17. — Todd Jorgenson The Mechanic (##1/2) In Jason Statham’s latest high-octane thriller, he plays a no-nonsense hitman with a reputation for finishing jobs cleanly and quickly. But problems arise when guilt leads him to take on an apprentice (Ben Foster) looking to learn the trade. It’s a collection of brutal and well-choreographed gunfights, chases and stunt sequences that provides plenty of excitement, and it smartly doesn’t let off the gas pedal very often for its rattletrap plot to get in the way. Rated R, 92 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — T.J.

anyway, check; a frightened girl allegedly possessed by the devil, check; dark rooms, unexplained phenomena, objects appearing and disappearing, something horrific that turns out to be a nightmare — check, double check and triple check. Colin O’Donoghue plays Michael (hmm, just like the angel, right?), a budding priest about to take orders but who questions his commitment. His superior (Toby Jones) sends him to Rome to take a course in exorcism, which obviously will erase his doubts. His Roman superior (Ciaran Hinds) sends him to Father Lucas Trevant (Hopkins), a man known for his quaint eccentricities.

From there, the two work to rid a possessed girl of a demon, an overly familiar process that prompts Lucas to ask Michael if he were expecting a swiveling head and outbursts of pea soup. And why not? Everything else in the film comes out of other spiritual-possession flicks. The Rite compounds its offenses of never going anywhere or doing anything new and novel by also being deathly dull. It plods along in a succession of colorless scenes inhabited by cardboard characters following a cliched script.

Director Darren Aronofsky (The Wrestler) delivers the unusual hybrid horror-ballet film. Entertaining and strange. Kelly includes Beau in her plans as she prepares for a comeback tour orchestrated by her manager husband, James (Tim McGraw), who also has a protege (Leighton Meester) he is grooming for stardom. Sure, other bad stuff can take place when Beelzebub comes knocking, but few of them equal having to sit through this movie. Anyone who has watched The Exorcist in the nearly 38 years since its 1973 release can skip The Rite, a film devoid of color, humor or imagination. Hafstrom directed as if he went down a prescribed list of horror tropes: an eccentric priest, check; a young priest who may have lost his faith, check; an attractive woman (Alice Braga) who appears from nowhere and has little to do with the story but hangs around about Ochs’ personal life and glosses over the demons that led to his death. from big-budget epics with this modest relationship comedy about Ronny (Vince Vaughn), whose best friend (Kevin James) can’t make a commitment to his girlfriend (Winona Ryder), who Ronny discovers is having an affair with a younger man. There are some laughs and agreeable performances (from a top-notch cast) even if the script is predictable and lacking a consistent tone. Everyone here has done better. Rated PG-13, 111 minutes. — T.J. The Fighter (##) In a story based on two actual half-brothers from Lowell, Mass., Mark Wahlberg plays Mickey Ward, a promising boxer, who trains with his crack-addicted brother, Dickie Eklund (Christian Bale). David O. Russell directs but fails to find much of interest in the dead-end brothers and their cinematically stale story. Rated R, 114 minutes. — B.A. The Green Hornet (##) Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) directed and Seth Rogen co-scripted and stars in this redo of a 75-year-old comic book series. Britt Reid (Rogen) inherits his father’s wealth and, with his sidekick Kato (Jay Chou), becomes crimefighter the Green Hornet. Silly and inconsequential nonsense made worse by erratic direction and overly hammy actors. Rated PG-13, 118 minutes. — B.A. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 (###1/2) Director David Yates deftly directs the beginning of the end of the Potter series. Harry (Daniel Radcliffe), Ron (Rupert Grint) and Hermione (Emma Watson) go on a grim journey to find the horcruxes that keep Harry’s nemesis, Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes), alive. Absorbing, disturbing and not for young children. Rated PG-13, 146 minutes. — Lucinda Breeding Inside Job (###1/2) In this entertaining documentary about a dry subject, filmmaker Charles Ferguson (No End in Sight) steps on toes and names names in examining the recent financial crisis. He breaks down its causes, the events leading up to it and even tries to pin down the culprits. Little new is here, but it is good to see so much egregious behavior assembled in one package. Rated PG-13, 108 minutes. — B.A. The King’s Speech (####) Colin First plays the Duke of York, the next King George VI, who, before ascending to the crown, struggles to overcome a halting stammer. He enlists the help of an unorthodox speech therapist (Geoffrey Rush). Well observed, thoughtful, intelligent film from director Tom Hooper, with an excellent supporting cast: Helena Bonham-Carter, Derek Jacobi, Guy Pearce, Michael Gambon. Rated R, 118 minutes. — B.A. The Way Back (###1/2) Visually striking epic drama chronicles seven prisoners who escape from a Siberian labor camp during the 1940s and face a harrowing journey on foot to freedom.
