nother Denton outfit is on its way up. Bridges and Blinking Lights, which now identifies itself as a Denton-Dallas band, plays Hailey’s on Sunday night. The indie band has earned an admirable raft of critical praise since its 2007 self-produced release, Standing on the Same Stick. A year later, the band headed to the lab with Centro-matic drummer Matt Pence, who played engineer for the band’s March 2 release, Heroes, Guns & Snakes. The group will make a video before heading out for a Midwest tour. Bassist Michael Lile, guitarist Marc Montoya, vocalist Jake Wilganowski, and drummer Christopher Considine join Brave Combo, Young and Brave and With Gusto in Sunday’s benefit concert for the Denton Community Market. Doors open at 8 p.m. Cover is $10 for ages 21 and older, $12 for those younger than 21. Hailey’s is at 122 W. Mulberry St. — Lucinda Breeding

It is a paper art that uses a slotted tool. Paper is threaded though the tool and then curled into shapes. It was originally done with a feather. “It is a paper art, and there is a tool that looks like a darning needle,” said Robyn Lee, manager of the museum. The workshop recently caused a rash of calls from people who wanted to learn to quilt, or do calligraphy. Quill-
ing can be confused with calligraphy because of the art’s original use of a quill; and the word is often misread as “quilting,” Lee said. At Saturday’s workshop, participants will be making hearts and flowers for a Valentine’s Day card. “It is really very pretty,” Lee said. The workshop is $5, and the museum supplies the paper,
glue, tools and pattern guidelines. The workshop, from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Saturday, is recommended for adults and children 14 or older, Lee said. Reservations are suggested because there is limited seating. Call 940-349-2865 by Friday to reserve a spot. For more information, visit www.dentoncounty.com/bsh.

University of North Texas marimba player will perform a concert for the Lewisville Lake International Series on Friday night. Noriko Tsukagoshi, a native of Japan, will play at 7:30 p.m. at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 5500 Morriss Road in Flower Mound. “She played in front of the imperial family in Tokyo not so long ago,” said Ian Cleghorn, marketing director for the Lewisville Lake Symphony. The symphony has an ongoing partnership with the UNT College of Music. She has also played in Europe and the U.S. Cleghorn compares playing the marimba to trying to pat your head while rubbing circles on your stomach at the same time. “Two sticks in each [hand], and both hands have to work together but not at the same time,” he said.

City’s all wrapped up at local sushi spot By Ellen Sackett Staff Writer
I have a saying: There are two kinds of people: those who love sushi and those who have never tried it. At least that’s been my experience, so I see it as a mission in life to turn the latter into the former. Over the years, I’ve accomplished this goal many times. How? By introducing non-believers to the roll. The Denton Roll, to be accurate. This is a creation by I Love Sushi, a hole-in-the-wall sushi joint off Sunset Street. The Denton Roll, obviously named for our fair city, is an equal combination of raw tuna, avocado and cream cheese rolled in white rice and nori. Nori — a standard ingredient in most Japanese rolls — is seaweed pressed thin and flat

I Love Sushi’s Denton Roll combines raw tuna, avocado and cream cheese. like paper and rolled in the rice, giving the roll its form. Then the roll is sprinkled with sesame seeds and artfully presented on the plate with a dab of wasabi — hot Japanese horseradish — and a side of pickled ginger. For extra flavor, add a teensy bit of wasabi or dunk it in soy sauce. I prefer to dip mine in spicy mayonnaise, only available by request. I can hear some protest, “Raw fish? I don’t eat raw fish!” Neither did I before I tried it. Here’s the skinny. While there’s no official FDA standard for what makes fish

University by going home again. Anderson-Staley, a Manhattan photographer, traveled to a wooded area in Maine where a small community of homesteaders still carve out an American life in an old-fashioned way. They live “off the grid,” meaning they don’t rely on public utilities for electricity or plumbing. Anderson-Staley spent her childhood in a log cabin her father built in the Maine community. Her photo project of the community today earned her the Solo Show Award for the eighth annual Joyce Elaine Grant Photography Exhibition. The award meant she’d have a solo exhibit during the ninth annual Joyce Elaine Grant show, which opened Tuesday. “Off the Grid” is a series of photographs Anderson-Staley took during visits back to Maine. They capture the rustic homes, the landscape and the residents throughout the seasons. She catches them in mundane moments — shaving, reading, playing. The photographer said she didn’t mean to shoot the series as a cohesive project until she started referring to it as “Off the Grid.” It’s a process for a family to intentionally disconnect from the modern urban and suburban infrastructure, with government-tended water and sewer systems and electricity. “Both my parents claim it was the other one who decided to move off the grid, but either way, we moved to Maine in 1980 when I was 2 years old,” Anderson-Staley said. “For a year or two we lived in an old ‘garage’ on about 70 acres while my father and a few of his friends built a log cabin. Although my parents are divorced and live separately, they are still both off the grid.” See WILD on 11

Keliy Anderson-Staley’s Tom’s Cabin in Winter, Guilford, Maine catches some of the hallmarks of homesteading life: lots of windows to let in light and heat in this “off-the-grid” cabin, stacks of cord wood at the ready for fuel and heating and plenty of gardening tools.

OPENING FRIDAY La Danse: The Paris Opera Ballet (####) Veteran documentary filmmaker Frederick Wiseman runs his constantly rolling cameras, while using his fly-on-the-wall approach to chronicle the world’s most prestigious dance company. He captures rehearsals, and performances, from seven productions, while also taking time to catch the hidden bureaucracy. The lengthy immersion leaves the viewer with a seemingly intimate knowledge of the company. Not rated, 159 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — Boo Allen When in Rome Disillusioned with romance, Beth, an ambitious New Yorker (Kristen Bell), travels to Rome, where she plucks magic coins from a special fountain. The coins attract an assortment of odd suitors, including a sausage merchant (Danny DeVito), a street magician (Jon Heder) and an artist (Will Arnett). But, when a persistent reporter (Josh Duhamel) throws his hat in the ring, Beth wonders if his love is the real thing. Rated PG-13, 91 minutes.
NOW PLAYING Avatar (###1/2) James Cameron’s long gestating computer-generated science-fiction saga boasts impressive special effects and some striking creatures. A U.S. military team travels to the distant moon Pandora to extract a valuable mineral. But once there, they must disrupt the peaceful indigenous people. The skies and mountains of Pandora set the scene for the ultimate battle sequences and for Cameron’s technical crews to render a succession of detailed, highly impressive marvels. Rated PG-13, 162 minutes. — B.A. The Blind Side (###) Straightforward crowd-pleaser about the life of Michael Oher, now a rookie offensive tackle with the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens. Oher (well played by newcomer Quinton Aaron) was a homeless teen on the streets of Memphis when he was taken in by an affluent family led by a strong-willed mother (Sandra Bullock), which helped him realize his potential and get to college. While an edgier approach might be beneficial, director John Lee Hancock (The Rookie) can’t be faulted for simply allowing Oher’s story to tell itself. Rated PG-13, 126 minutes.

Mel Gibson plays a police detective bent on justice in Edge of Darkness, his first film in 7 1/2 years.
Passionless return Gibson’s fire has dimmed since his last starring role t’s been seven years since his last film, but Mel Gibson is still playing martyr. One might fairly call Gibson “The Crusader,” and not just because of his widely known religious views or because he directed The Passion of the Christ. For much of his career, Gibson has played both reluctant and enthusiastic heroes righteously battling corruption (Lethal Weapon), oppression (The Patriot, Braveheart), injustice (Payback, Ransom) and disinformation (Conspiracy Theory). In Edge of Darkness, he’s up against a little of each. But will moviegoers forgive Gibson (of
drunken driving and antiSemitic remarks) to watch him being sacrificed for the sins of others? Gibson is Thomas Craven, a humble Boston police detective and single father to a 24-yearold daughter, Emma (Bojana Novakovic). When Emma comes home for a visit, she’s abruptly and mysteriously shot and killed. Grief-stricken, he coldly sets out like a discharged bullet to find the killer, a journey that leads him into a complex web of corporate and political cover-up. Emma had been working as a researcher at Northmoor, a private energy company run with government assistance that may be secretly involved with nuclear weapons. Most everything, Craven finds, is “classified.” As he delves deeper, Craven meets the villains hidden behind an elaborate PR-created
artifice — like Northmoor CEO Jack Bennett (a believable, slick Danny Huston). The hidden corruption may reach as far as Republican Sen. Jim Pine (Damian Young). (Yes, more shocking, unexpected things from Massachusetts senators.) The dependably excellent Ray Winstone plays Darius Jedburgh, who’s a little like George Clooney’s “fixer” in Michael Clayton. He’s more of an obscurer, though: His job is to make sure people never connect “A to B” — that the truth remains too shrouded in lies for police, reporters and the public to decipher. In a complex modern world with seemingly less accountability all the time, Winstone’s weary, philosophical Jedburgh strikes a chord. Edge of Darkness is directed by Martin Campbell (Casino Royale) who, interestingly enough, is remak-
— Todd Jorgenson The Book of Eli (##) Denzel Washington does his best to salvage this heavy-handed post-apocalyptic thriller of sorts from the Hughes brothers (Menace 2 Society). He plays a resourceful, spiritual loner who wanders a barren landscape ravaged by war, determined to fulfill a mission that involves a treasured book. There are some interesting
concepts here, but as the film reveals its secrets about the hero's identity and motives, you realize the script takes itself too seriously, and isn't clever enough to match. Also stars Gary Oldman and Mila Kunis. Rated R, 117 minutes. — T.J. Extraordinary Measures (##) Inspired by a true story, this choppy medical drama strives so hard to be inspirational but winds up as formu-
laic as its title. It might be confused with a TV movie of the week if not for the presence of Brendan Fraser as a corporate executive who ditches his career for a longshot attempt to find a cure for a rare but fatal disease for his children, and Harrison Ford, who makes the most of his role as an eccentric yet irascible college researcher who might hold the key. ing the film from an awardwinning six-hour BBC miniseries he directed 25 years ago. Now 54, Gibson is grayer and grimmer. The part of Craven leaves little room for humor, but the wildness and fire that once exploded unpredictably from Gibson is much dimmed after several hard years for the actor. That may be more troublesome for future, brighter films, but Gibson fits well in Edge of Darkness. Hellbent in a beige raincoat, he attacks with little self-regard. The rules are rigged, so he breaks them. There’s undeniable catharsis — albeit an ugly, somewhat unsettling catharsis — in Edge of Darkness. owed by cliches. Rated PG, 106 minutes. — T.J. It’s Complicated (##1/2) A Santa Barbara bakery owner (Meryl Streep) travels on a family outing with her three grown children but is also joined by her remarried ex-husband (Alec Baldwin), with whom she proceeds to have a brief fling. everyone returns home, the affair continues, even when she becomes attracted to her genial, perfect architect (Steve Martin). Theoretically, an adult comedy by writer/director Nancy Meyers (Something’s Gotta Give). Rated R, 118 minutes. — B.A. Leap Year (##1/2) Innocuous romantic comedy about a woman (Amy Adams) who follows her reluctant boyfriend (Adam Scott) to Ireland when he goes for a convention. She hopes to take advantage of the Irish custom of proposing marriage on Feb. 29. A contrived, prolonged detour teams her with a local lad (Matthew Goode) with whom she quarrels before discovering her obvious true love. Broad comedy and an excess of silly pratfalls are made tolerable by the gorgeous Irish scenery. Rated PG, 110 minutes. — B.A. Legion For the patrons and staff at a dusty roadside diner, the day begins like any other, but when the phones go out and a sweet old lady goes on the attack, it's a harbinger of the terror to come. Help arrives in the form of the Archangel Michael (Paul Bettany), who tells a pregnant waitress that her unborn baby is humanity's last hope, and he will do anything to protect it. Rated R, 104 minutes. The Lovely Bones (##1/2) Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings) directs from Alice Sebold’s novel the story of a 14-year-old girl (Saoirse Ronan) who is murdered and then comments on the murder investigation. She looks down on the action from some purgatory netherworld created by Jackson, who, characteristically, pays more attention to fantasy elements than to storytelling. Rated PG13, 135 minutes. — B.A. Sherlock Holmes (###) Robert Downey Jr. stars as the title character and Jude Law plays Dr. Watson in Guy Ritchie’s high-energy rendition of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous detective. They are in search of serial killer Lord Blackwood (Mark Strong), who returns from the dead to terrorize London. Ritchie brings life to an overworked and overdone character and franchise. Rated PG-13, 128 minutes. — B.A. The Tooth Fairy (##) A minor league hockey player (Dwayne Johnson), with the nickname Tooth Fairy because he knocks his opponents’ teeth out, is taken away to fairyland and made to redeem himself when he makes fun of fairies in front of the young daughter of his girlfriend (Ashley Judd, remember her?). Lumpish mixture of smash-mouth violence and silly fairy gags. Julie Andrews appears as the fairy godmother. Rated PG, 101 minutes. — B.A. Up in the Air (##1/2) George Clooney stars as a corporate hatchet man, who travels around the country both to fire people but also to avoid a home life. A young upstart (Anna Kendrick) encroaches on his territory, while the equally well-traveled Alex (Vera Farmiga) promises stability and possibly love. Co-writer and director Jason Reitman (Juno) delivers an amusing if uneven film. Rated R, 109 minutes. — B.A.

Wild Denton residents already might be familiar with what it means to live off the grid because of Denton County’s Whitehawk community — which began as an eco-friendly community but later made some concessions — and Rainbow Valley, a tiny Sanger community that began as an off-the-grid neighborhood of dome houses in the 1970s. Anderson-Staley said she often returns to Maine, in contrast to the super-urban bustle of her current home, Manhattan. “I try to visit my family a few times a year, but in terms of the project, I’ve wanted to photograph in all four seasons to give the fullest picture of life there,” she said. “Whenever I go up I visit as many of the families as I can and try to visit at least one new family. There are a number of younger people who continue to move to the Maine woods, and I have met more as I’ve expanded the project geographically.” On her visits to the woods, Anderson-Staley was struck by the people and their resourcefulness. That’s where she saw a photography series. The homesteaders don’t choose a house from six floor plans in a planned community. They continually craft a home that makes way for their habits, their needs and their tastes. “I find the strange, improvised structures everyone builds fascinating — not just the cabins, but the outbuildings and root cellars,” she said. “None of them is a professional carpenter, but they’ve learned to work with wood, and taught themselves a variety of skills. I like the idiosyncrasies of each place, the unique stamp the families put on their homes.” Some of the residents do choose to connect to the technologically saturated world, either by turning on a charged cellphone for an hour each week, or setting up solar panels that charge laptop computers. Anderson-Staley’s family didn’t have a phone until she was 17. “There is a strong sense of family and community, but there is also a great deal of loneliness and isolation,” she said. “Especially in the winter,
Part of Keliy Anderson-Staley’s project was to show how living “off the grid” affects teenagers, like the subject of Katrina in the Kitchen, DoverFoxcroft, Maine. While growing up, Anderson-Staley’s family lived in a log cabin still standing in the Maine homesteading community. Courtesy photos/ Keliy Anderson-Staley
Tom Shaving, Guilford, Maine is one of a series of photographs in “Off the Grid,” a solo exhibition by Manhattan photographer Keliy Anderson-Staley. The man shown in this photo, Tom, owns the cabin pictured on Page 9. people stay in their cabins for weeks at a time. Many of the children are home-schooled. This can make for strong family relationships, but it can also be really difficult for teenagers growing up and couples on the rocks. I also wouldn’t want people to come away assuming that technology hasn’t made it into these homes either.” A lot of photographers would prepare for such an assignment as if they were headed out on a National Geographic assignment. They’d have their visitors’ eyes sighted for the exotic and the artful. That wasn’t Anderson-Staley’s process. “I’ve always seen myself as coming from this place, and because I grew up this way, there is really nothing exotic about it for me. In fact, when I
go to visit my father, it is very easy to fall back into the routine of using the outhouse, feeding the wood stove, pumping water for dishes. So for me there has always been a kind of autobiographical impulse — a desire to look at the more mundane aspects of living this way,” she said. “A few of these families watched me grow up, so I think they sometimes think it’s funny that I’ve come back from the city to photograph them. I think they are interested in seeing how I represent them.” There’s one way in which Anderson-Staley approaches the work as a cultural anthropologist. “I am always cautious when I approach new families,” she said. “I want to put them at ease and to assure them that I don’t
intend to exoticize them, and that I am as interested in preserving their privacy as they are.” In her photographs, Anderson-Staley shows that the residents of this community aren’t all left-leaning environmentalists. Some are, but some have gone off the grid as a way to live out evangelical Christian ethics. Other residents have other, more mysterious reasons for leaving the ease of suburban life. “It is the lifestyle that holds them together,” she said. “There is no coherent community, though. There are many separate centers. Some of the families, such as my own, belong to the Unitarian church, so there is a community gathered around that common experience.” American Unitarian Universalists are religious liberals descended from Puritan Christianity who claim stewardship of the Earth and conservation as important spiritual ethics. “Many of the families are aware of each other, and have met each other over the years,” Anderson-Staley said. “They all moved to Maine independently and have sought each other out. When they first came to the area 35 or 30 years ago, there was a sense that they were outsiders, and what they were trying to do was hard. So, although they were coming for different reasons, they needed to rely on each other’s collective wisdom. That having been said, any ‘community’ is very loose and can withstand long periods of time without any kind of contact between people.”
