Milestone performance Violinist will play Beethoven concerto with UNT orchestra
T
his Saturday night, violin aficionados are in for a treat: Emanuel Borok, who recently retired after 25 years as concertmaster for the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, will perform Beethoven’s Violin Concerto with the University of North Texas Symphony Orchestra. “It’s called the concerto of all the concertos,” Borok said. “This is a milestone in a violinist’s life to play this piece.” Borok, a UNT music professor, was 40 years old when he first performed this monumental work — the only violin concerto written by the famous composer. He said he has become more familiar with it with every performance. “Every time I play Beethoven, I come closer to doing
CONCERT What: performance by violinist Emanuel Borok and the UNT Symphony Orchestra, conducted by David Itkin Where: Winspear Performance Hall at the Murchison Performing Arts Center, 1200 North Texas Blvd. When: 8 p.m. Saturday Details: Tickets are $10 for adults, and $8 for seniors, non-UNT students and children. Free for College of Music faculty and staff, as well as UNT students with ID. Call 940369-7802 or visit www.the mpac.com.
justice to this piece,” he said. Borok said the piece is “most peculiar” because the orchestra presents most of the thematic material, often accompanied by the violin, whose part is filled with many moving notes. Typically, the opposite is true. He said that the violin soloist has to “have a mastery of color”
and must “present these notes as different than an exercise or etude as it may sound to one’s ears.” “Occasionally the violin is allowed to present the theme,” said Borok — at which point, “You can shine!” Borok, who was born and trained in the Soviet Union, was co-concertmaster of the Moscow Philharmonic before coming to the United States in 1973. For 11 years, he served as associate concertmaster of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and was concertmaster for the Boston Pops Orchestra. He has performed as a soloist throughout the U.S., as well as Israel, France, Italy, Germany, Norway, Venezuela, Canada, Holland and Mexico. He has collaborated with a number of renowned musicians, such as violinists Itzhak Perlman, Yehudi Menuhin, Pinchas Zukerman, Sarah Chang and Joshua Bell; cellists Janos Starker and Lynn Harrell; and
pianists Emmanuel Ax and Yefim Bronfman. Borok said he enjoys performing with the students. “I always love it,” he said. “They may lack in mastery, but they sure compensate with enthusiasm!” As a music professor, Borok is able to share his knowledge and experience. He said he finds it rewarding to see “the smile on their faces when they accomplish what they’ve been trying to do” with his help. After intermission, the orchestra will perform Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4. Borok has performed this piece as a concertmaster many times. “There are very few composers that project what’s called the Russian soul — the passion, the melancholy — and no one can do that better than Tchaikovsky,” he said. “It’s difficult to put into words. Music is so much more descriptive than words.” — Ellen Ritscher Sackett

Ramblin’ band
Portland’s Builders borrow from Depression-era folk

Busking on Portland sidewalks was good training for the Builders and the Butchers, the Oregon five-piece that makes a stop in Denton on Friday.
The Builders and the Butchers With Murder by Death and Damion Suomi & the Minor Prophets. Friday at Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studios, 411 E. Sycamore St. Cover is $12 for ages 21 and older, $14 for younger than 21. Doors open at 8 p.m.
“When you’re playing on the street, you have five seconds to get the song out there in some way, and make that person walking by hear you and listen to you,” said Ryan Sollee, singer and guitarist of the band. “If you go soft on the street, they aren’t going to listen.” Dead Reckoning, the Builders’ third album, will be released Feb. 22 on Badman Recording Co. The group — which includes Harvey Tumbleson on mandolin and banjo, Ray Rude on drums and keyboard, and Willie Kunkle on bass — recorded mostly live in the studio, with just about no overdubbing, Sollee said. “I think a lot of our favorite recordings were done that way, just stripped down and simple,” Sollee said. “We talked with our producer, and we discussed the fact that we’re such a live band that anytime you go into the studio, you lose something.” Dead Reckoning kept a death grip on the band’s urgency in the tracks, which Sollee likened to Depression-era music. Take, for instance, “Blood for You.” As Sollee wails, “There’s a great big wise hand in the sky/It takes the sun and pushes it around,” the drums keep up a rock-bust-
ing, chain gang cadence. An organ underscores “Family Tree,” a tune that borrows solemnity from Johnny Cash. A fictional reprobate considers his fate while “lookin’ at the golden leaves/and cable around his hands and knees/ My family tree, it goes straight right back into the ground/My family tree goes straight down.”
The Builders and the Butchers are enjoying the resurgence of folk music itself and renewed interest in it. “I think musical tastes are cyclical,” Sollee said. “It’s like every 15 years, there’s this resurgence of old blues and old rock. I think people go back to it because it’s honest and good and real. There’s stuff out there
like Auto-Tune and all this technology, and that’s OK. But then there’s music that’s real and not polished. In a way, it’s like when a band like Nirvana comes along and destroys hair metal.” Audiences should expect songs about fictional characters persevering in hardscrabble times.

THE SOUND OF SERYN
With its much-anticipated album out, Seryn prepares for its next move
By Lucinda Breeding Features Editor
B
efore its members ever walked into a studio, Seryn had lifted the artistic bar high. The five-member group was already a critical darling, and more established Denton acts were name-dropping Seryn as an influence. So what in the world has the fuss been about? The fuss is on This Is Where We Are, the debut release of a group that puts tight harmonies, surprising percussion and literary lyrics into an indie rock context that, at times, sounds as deep and intimate as chamber music. “I think it’s the one thing we were waiting for,” said lead singer Trenton Wheeler, who plays guitar, ukulele and accordion. “Not having a record out was the one thing that was sort of holding us back. We wanted to keep moving forward as a band, but we really couldn’t until we got into the studio and got this album done.” For one thing, there was an appetite for a recording not just in the booming Dallas-Fort Worth indie music scene, but also from the likes of Pitchfork and a handful of other go-to music magazines and websites. This Is Where We Are dropped on Jan. 25 to a friendly audience, and reception has been good. More than good. This Is Where We Are is an honest recording of an honest live set, where the music begs to be heard as a sum greater than its parts. Chris Semmelbeck’s percussion puts a shimmer here, a heart murmur there and a fullon lub-dub where the music calls for it. Remember Paul Simon’s Graceland? The record that showed Western audiences how basic and beautiful African percussion can be when a judicious musician knows how to place it? Seryn doesn’t have the fat-cat studio money to apply the beats that cemented Simon’s maturity as a musician, but their homebrewed rhythm section achieves a wildness and abandon that rings true. Wheeler’s agile tenor isn’t so different from his playing — he has a lively, sinewy sound that can do either soft or strenuous. Cheslea Bohrer’s fiddle and drum can be both meaty and angelic. Guitarist Nathan Allen and bassist Aaron Stoner give Wheeler and Bohrer the aural
Seryn is Nathan Allen (guitar, banjo), Chris Semmelbeck (drums, banjo, pump organ, guitar, accordion, bells), Chelsea Bohrer (violin, percussion), Trenton Wheeler (ukulele, banjo, accordion, vocals) and Aaron Stoner (bass, trumpet, cello). The Denton band just released its debut album, This Is Where We Are, shown above at right. counterweight the songs call for. A Seryn live set moves like a worship liturgy. The band brings a crowd into a shared emotional space with songs such as “Towering,” a slow march of harmony and welcome. Then the five-piece convicts the crowd with feverish numbers like “Bete Noir” with Wheeler musing: “Caught within is a poor explanation. It’s all I can hear. It’s always been there. How can I erase what’s come? And look for rest where there is none And with everything behind and caught between, in hell confined. Letting go, I’m exposed.” Finally, redemption is on the horizon, even if it its mysterious, as on “So Within.” The band chants in harmony: “Come on, on, on, on, on, on. You’re chasing me always. Come away, way away.” The album, though, is less a musical liturgy and more a gallery of emotional impressionism. The body of work is just as powerful, yet a little more distant.
SERYN CD RELEASE When: 10 p.m. Friday Where: Dan’s Silverleaf, 103 Industrial St. Details: Cover is $7. On the Web: www.spune.com/seryn
“We all have a version in our heads that is way better than it ever could be, and live and recording are just the best we can do to get it out. If we could plug you into our brains, you could hear what it really sounds like,” said guitarist and vocalist Nathan Allen. “The recorded version of any song is a different expression of the same song. It’s the difference between a painting and a photograph. “I’ll tell you this, when I hear the record, it makes me realize how kick-ass Trenton’s vocals are. I mean, I knew that — it’s not like I didn’t know he can sing — but listening to it reminds me of how awesome a singer he is.” “As strange as this sounds, I think acoustic instruments sound more

human,” Allen said. “I know. I know how that sounds, because I’m sure [synthesizer inventor Robert] Moog poured all his heart and soul into the synthesizer. I know that my guitar was made by a machine — it’s a cheap guitar I have. I

know how this sounds. But to me, when I hear acoustic music, it seems like it’s somehow more human.” The band released its debut through Spune, a record and production company that represents Denton Americana
artists Doug Burr, Glen Farris, Eyes and Ears (another project of Seryn’s Allen) and other Texas folk outfits, including Monahans and Telegraph Canyon. Wheeler said Spune took things nice and easy for Seryn, and understood that
Is Seryn a hybrid of Americana, indie rock and bluegrass? Yes and no. The Denton band employs the bravado of the accordion, the Appalachian dialect of the banjo, the rock posturing of the acoustic guitar, the soprano of the fiddle and the subtle thump of the upright and electric bass. Chelsea Bohrer, the band’s violinist, occasional tom drummer and vocalist, said the band is the beneficiary of both technique and intuition. “Yes, all of us have some formal training. I played violin through middle school and picked it back up when we got together. But we’ve all done a lot of selfteaching,” she said. But what has stumped music journalists and fans alike when it comes to identifying Seryn’s sound is the band’s universal love for African music. It drives tracks like “This Is Where We Are,” with its hand claps and drumming. It’s also in the yodeling guitar on “River Song.” — Lucinda Breeding
the band wanted to keep artistic control over their music. “We were playing an end-of-summer show, and Glen Farris, who books shows for Spune, was there,” Wheeler said. “Glen pretty much immediately told Lance [Yocum, Spune owner]: ‘Hey, this is a band you need to see.’ He came out to see our live show and we started talking about making a record. “Lance is what you call good people. He’s down-to-earth. He isn’t in it for Spune. He’s in it for everyone.” Spune assembled the region’s most sought-after studio personnel to record, engineer and mix the record. Bohrer said the band is probably more like a democracy than most. She and Wheeler agreed that the musicians listen to each other and watch each other on stage. “We even set up the stage so that the musicians curve backward,” Wheeler said. “It’s vital that we can all see every single musician on stage.” “I think our best shows have been when we’ve been able to have the most eye contact,” Bohrer said. “When we’re all able to connect with one another in that moment, that’s when we make the best music. That’s what I think. Seryn music is really a direct result of the connection between all of us as musicians. That and Trenton’s vocals.” Allen said the musicians brought all their natural intensity to making This Is Where We Are — which meant that making the album was painful in turns. “Are our fans excited about this album? Yes. And we’re excited about people having the album. Are we excit-

No. We’ve heard every single song 500 to 1,000 times on headphones at the computer, listening to every little detail.” Allen said. “Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad we got this record done. It was important to get the record finished and out there. But it’s not exciting for the band. We’re moving forward.” Success for Seryn isn’t about record sales — though none of the musicians are sad to see Spune pressing another batch of CDs. “In terms of goals, I want to play in Africa,” Bohrer said. “I think that’s something all of us would love to do. All of us have Africa in our hearts, I think, and it definitely affects our music. But I’m glad that we’re always doing other things.” Wheeler said Seryn is committed to more music, even though being a band means working through projects when the musicians are riding separate creative waves. “It’s definitely not easy,” Bohrer said. “Sometimes, we have to go, ‘Halt!’ Are things not working because you’re hungry, angry, lonely or tired, or all four? But for me, just playing usually makes all of that work somehow.” Wheeler said even when the rubber doesn’t perfectly meet the road when Seryn makes music, it’s the music that counts. “Sometimes, when there is steam pouring out of your ears, the best thing to do is just shut up and play,” he said. OPENING FRIDAY The Illusionist (###1/2) Oscarnominated animated film from Sylvain Chomet (The Triplets of Belleville) based on a 1950s screenplay from French treasure Jacques Tati. With virtually no dialogue, Chomet renders the story of an aging music hall magician who unexpectedly finds himself guardian and companion of a stage-struck young girl. They travel together as he performs and she eventually grows up into a young woman. Charming and sweet, if somewhat slight. Rated PG, 80 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — Boo Allen The Roommate Sara quickly becomes friends with her new college roommate, Rebecca. Troubles soon escalate when Sara learns through others that Rebecca may not be emotionally stable, and Rebecca develops an unhealthy infatuation with Sara that soon turns violent. With Minka Kelly, Leighton Meester, Cam Gigandet, Alyson Michalka and Billy Zane. Written by Sonny Mallhi. Directed by Christian E. Christiansen. Rated PG-13, 93 minutes. — Los Angeles Times Summer Wars (###) This ambitious Japanese anime is an imaginative if uneven science-fiction saga about a teenage math whiz who inadvertently becomes caught up in a dangerous plot to hack into a powerful virtual world of avatars and government secrets. It might seem ideal for the kids, but the narrative complexity makes it inaccessible to small children. However, for anime fans it’s a sophisticated and visually striking alternative to most entries in the genre. Not rated, 114 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — Todd Jorgenson
NOW PLAYING Black Swan (###) Natalie Portman stars as Nina, a ballerina chosen to star in a new production of Swan Lake. Her mother (Barbara Hershey) and her ballet instructor (Vincent Cassel) both seem more than a little off-balance, until Nina too starts heading over the edge. Director Darren Aronofsky (The Wrestler) delivers the unusual hybrid horror-ballet film. Entertaining and

Hardly heartwarming Adventure flick ‘Sanctum’ doesn’t let everyone survive By Jake Coyle AP Entertainment Writer
In the low-budget 3-D cavediving adventure Sanctum, a little bit of rain causes a lot of death — by accident, murder and a bizarre amount of assisted suicide. Who needs those chipper Chilean miners, anyway? Eschewing such heartwarming tales, Sanctum, directed by Australian Alister Grierson and produced by 3-D guru James Cameron, is more interested in the savage realities of survival. A large expedition headed by grizzled Aussie explorer Frank McGuire (Richard Roxburgh) is knee-deep in mapping the mile-deep Esa’ala Caves of Papua New Guinea. Frank’s less ambitious 17-year-old son, Josh (Rhys Wakefield), along with the team’s financier daredevil Carl (Ioan Gruffudd) and his equally gung-ho girlfriend, Victoria (Alice Parkinson), have just arrived. Set deep in the jungle, the mouth of the expansive cave system (actually shot in Australia) is enormous and cylindrical. You half expect the Millennium Falcon of Star Wars to come shooting out with a giant worm in close pursuit. In the complex labyrinth of cavernous chambers and underground rivers beneath the surface, the danger is less alien. Maneuvering by scuba through underwater crevices as tight as those of 127 Hours, Frank’s mantra is that “panic is the enemy.” A storm is known to be approaching, but deep underground, they’re somehow still caught unprepared when the storm develops into a cyclone, thus promising a life-threatening deluge in the caves. Taking charge is Frank, a cold fish, indeed. “There’s no God down here,” he snaps at

one moment with face hardened. Elsewhere, there’s: “There are no rescue missions down here, only body recoveries!” Everyone questions his harsh leadership (particularly his more kindhearted son), but Frank is gradually borne out. He may be gruff, but he knows caves and the limitations of what can be accomplished. Those locked underground follow him, looking for the exit
to the sea. The survivors are winnowed until — true to the tradition of so many such films — women and nonwhites are gradually dispatched. Some exit like Willy Wonka characters, neatly ruined by their foolhardiness. A claustrophobia takes hold as they make their way from one chamber to the next, squeaking through the rock and water. Many of the set pieces in the cave system and the underwater shots are beautiful, but the lack of variation begins to feel like the recent film Buried, which takes place entirely in a coffin. Sanctum is clearly in line with Cameron’s adoration of subsurface exploration, a love
affair at least since The Abyss. As a showcase for 3-D, Sanctum is a failure. The depth of the images adds little to the experience, and for most of the middle of the film, is entirely forgotten. The darkness of the caves, at least, suits the darkened image of 3-D. Written by John Garvin and caver Andrew Wight, Sanctum claims to be “inspired by a true story.” The basis, though, is a cave trip by Wight where all 15 survived. The film at least avoids that romantic lie of so many survivalist movies, that you can make it against all odds. Sanctum allows that heroism has its limits and that death must be accepted.

strange. Rated R, 103 minutes. — B.A. The Dilemma (##1/2) Oscar-winning director Ron Howard takes a detour from big-budget epics with this modest relationship comedy about Ronny (Vince Vaughn), whose best friend (Kevin James) can’t make a commitment to his girlfriend (Winona Ryder), who Ronny discovers is having an affair with a younger man. There are some laughs and agreeable performances (from a top-notch cast) even if the script is predictable and lacking a consistent tone. Everyone here has done better. Rated PG-13, 111 minutes. — T.J. The Fighter (##) In a story based on two actual half-brothers from Lowell, Mass., Mark Wahlberg plays Mickey Ward, a promising boxer, who trains with his crack-addicted brother, Dickie Eklund (Christian Bale). David O. Russell directs but fails to find much of interest in the dead-end brothers and their cinematically stale story. Rated R, 114 minutes. — B.A. The Green Hornet (##) Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) directed and Seth Rogen co-scripted and stars in this redo of a 75-year-old comic book series. Britt Reid (Rogen) inherits his father’s wealth and, with his sidekick Kato (Jay Chou), becomes crimefighter the Green Hornet. Silly and inconsequential nonsense made worse by erratic direction and overly hammy actors. Rated PG-13, 118 minutes. — B.A. Inside Job (###1/2) In this entertaining documentary about a dry subject, filmmaker Charles Ferguson (No End in Sight) steps on toes and names names in examining the recent financial crisis. He breaks down its causes, the events leading up to it and even tries to pin down the culprits. Little new is here, but it is good to see so much egregious behavior assembled in one package. Rated PG-13, 108 minutes. — B.A. The King’s Speech (####) Colin First plays the Duke of York, the next King George VI, who, before ascending to the crown, struggles to overcome a halting stammer. He enlists the help of an unorthodox speech therapist (Geoffrey Rush). Well observed, thoughtful, intelligent film from director Tom Hooper, with an excellent supporting cast: Helena Bonham-Carter, Derek Jacobi, Guy Pearce, Michael Gambon. Rated R, 118 minutes. — B.A. The Mechanic When his mentor is murdered, an elite assassin joins forces with his mentor’s son to seek revenge. With Jason Statham, Ben Foster and Donald Sutherland. Directed by Simon West. Rated R, 100 minutes. — LAT 127 Hours (###1/2) Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire) again shows his versatility with this harrowing true-life adventure tale about Aron Ralston (James Franco), a hiker who slipped in a narrow Utah canyon, becoming immobile when his arm was wedged between rocks. As his provisions run
low and survival hopes turn slim, he becomes desperate. Franco is terrific, while Boyle manages to bring suspense and high drama to a story with only one human character. Rated R, 93 minutes. — T.J. No Strings Attached When lifelong friends Emma (Natalie Portman) and Adam (Ashton Kutcher) take their relationship to the next level by having sex, they make a pact to keep things purely physical — no fighting, no jealousy and no expectations — to preserve their friendship. The question then becomes, which one will fall first? Rated R, 108 minutes. The Rite A veteran priest introduces a skeptical seminary student to the dark side of their faith at a Vatican school that trains clergymen to be exorcists. With Anthony Hopkins. Based on the book by Matt Baglio. Directed by Mikael Hafstrom. Rated PG-13, 127 minutes. — LAT Season of the Witch A knight of the Crusades and a fellow soldier must transport a woman accused of being a witch to a remote monastery. With Nicolas Cage, Ron Perlman, Claire Foy and Christopher Lee. Directed by Dominic Sena. Rated PG13, 92 minutes. — LAT Tangled (###1/2) Energetic 3-D animated musical retelling of the story of Rapunzel (voiced by Mandy Moore), the teenage girl whose long, flowing hair possesses magical powers, causing her to be kidnapped and held in a tower until a petty thief becomes her unlikely rescuer, leading to an adventure filled with quirky characters both good and evil. It’s a crisply animated tale with a couple of standout production numbers and a strong heroine. While slow in spots, it has appeal for all ages. Rated PG, 101 minutes. — T.J. Tron: Legacy Rebellious Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund) is haunted by the mysterious disappearance of his father (Jeff Bridges, reprising his role from 1982’s Tron), a man once known as the world’s leading video game developer. When Sam investigates a strange signal sent from the old Flynn’s Arcade — a signal that could only come from his father — he finds himself pulled into a digital world where his father has been trapped for 20 years. With Olivia Wilde and Michael Sheen. Rated PG, 126 minutes. True Grit (###1/2) Jeff Bridges plays slovenly, perpetually drunk U.S. Marshal Rooster Cogburn, enlisted by 14-year-old Mattie (Hailee Steinfeld) to enter American Indian territory and find her father’s murderer (Josh Brolin). They are joined by a Texas Ranger (Matt Damon). The Coen brothers make their own stylized Western, while also paying heed to western tropes and mythology. Rated PG-13, 110 minutes. — B.A. The Way Back (###1/2) Visually striking epic drama chronicles seven prisoners who escape from a Siberian labor camp during the 1940s and face a harrowing journey on foot to freedom. Despite a deliberate pace, veteran director Peter Weir (Dead Poets Society) never allows the narrative momentum to stall as the film becomes a detailed and gritty look at perseverance in the face of long odds. Rated PG-13, 132 minutes. — T.J.
