Reuse shop throws reopening party SCRAP plans bash on Bell Avenue By Nicholas Friedman Staff Writer nfriedman@dentonrc.com

To celebrate the opening of its new location, SCRAP Denton, a reuse and recycle shop, is hosting a grand reopening party at 5 p.m. Friday to welcome the community back through its doors. After the nonprofit outgrew its original location on West Oak Street in just three years, director Heather Gregory said she believes the space at the new location, 420 S. Bell Ave., is just right. “We needed more room, more shelving, more parking,” Gregory said. “Our new space, which is still downtown, offers us all of those things.” SCRAP Denton is a creative reuse center that functions as a community resource where people can donate or purchase creative materials. “We aim to inspire people to reuse and repurpose materials instead of throwing them away,” Gregory said. The reopening party, Grego-

ry said, will include live music, food, drinks (for those over 21), Valentine’s crafts and a photo booth. The party will run from 5 to 9 p.m. “We want to celebrate our growth with the community,” she said. “This move happened because of the ongoing community support that we have received. It’s the community that donates materials, shops, volunteers their time. We want to celebrate all that we’ve been able to accomplish because of that support.” Gregory hopes that the new location, in combination with the reopening party, will spur continued growth for the shop and increase awareness that one person’s trash can be another’s treasure. “I want to continue making community connections on a larger scale,” she said. “I want to connect with local businesses that are generating waste that they could donate here instead.” That way, more materials that would otherwise be discarded can become supplies for artists, teachers, students and entrepreneurs in the community.

‘Materials’ show merges elegance, humor By Lucinda Breeding | Features Editor cbreeding@dentonrc.com

W

hen University of North Texas art faculty member Ana M. Lopez took her first tour of the work submitted to “Materials: Hard & Soft,” she said she was looking for one thing: quality. That means the educator — who is also a metalsmith who makes her own art for the market — was looking for beautiful art made by sound hands. When she’d looked at the hundreds of submissions and found quality, Lopez said she then started looking for originality.

“When I started do this, I was looking at photos of the work,” Lopez said. “And it occurred to me that I’m not selecting a photograph. I’m selecting a show. I want variety. I want balance.” “Materials: Hard & Soft” is the Greater Denton Arts Council’s flagship exhibit, and a contemporary American craft competition. That’s “craft” as in art that grew from the functional — furniture, pottery, glassware, quilts and clothes and jewelry — and See MATERIALS on 10

Materials veered into the highly decorative. This year’s exhibit opens on Friday, and viewers can expect everything from elegance and humor to politically charged and pensive.

The elegant Metalsmith and New Yorker Chelsea Fay takes images that could very well be complex and biological — such as her Untitled necklace — and render them into a sophisticated form that refers to a revered historical form. Her necklace — made of fine silver, sterling and copper — borrows the shape and bearing of the red blood cell, then carefully creates granules that give the piece the look of gems or lace. The artist uses resin and paint to add dimension and drama to her carefully made jewelry. And the piece drapes over the shoulders as easily as a knitted shawl. And here’s a good game when you see the necklace in the gallery: Just try to locate the clasp. It has one, but Fay’s literal interpretation of jewelry being part of the body — like skin or hair — requires an impeccable technique that makes functional things like closures and clasps invisible. Lopez was charmed by Fay’s painstaking approach to the bead-like elements throughout the piece. “Those aren’t beads that she’s soldered onto the piece,” Lopez said. “Those granules happen through heat and chemistry. There are so many chances for it all to go to hell. That takes patience and a lot of skill.”

The politically charged There’s something irreverent about Mindy Herrin’s Uterus Puppet. The clay and metal sculpture includes a light arm and hand that protrudes from the wall, holding a black vortex of a uterus by one sad and inert fallopian tube. A set of ovaries sit aside the uterus, sleepy as a hound dog’s ears. Herrin considers the piece mixed media, with a found object reworked with clay, steel, felt, copper and encaustic.

cameo or gemstone is expected are small paintings of sashimi. And sushi rolls tucked in on themselves. A tailored set of silver chopsticks is included in the display. What makes this artistic sight gag that much more delightful? Sushi fans are aware of the ceremonial way that sushi

chefs prepare their dishes. Well, Szabo is as careful with her stenciling and composition. You can almost taste it. “Materials” has attracted a roster of jurors with international renown — including curators from the Renwick Gallery and the White House collection of craft. Last year, the show was chosen by Monica Moses, editor of American Craft, the publishing arm of the American Craft Council. Lopez said she didn’t think twice when the arts council invited her to be juror for the show. She selected the show from about 600 submissions. There are 65 pieces in the show. “I can’t imagine anyone not wanting to do this,” Lopez said, surveying the Meadows Gallery as the art was unpacked from crates and about to go on the walls, pedestals or inside cases. “I see ‘Materials: Hard & Soft’ as being a statement on craft media itself. If anything is inherent to craft, it’s the material.” LUCINDA BREEDING can be reached at 940-566-6877.

Tennessee artist and metalsmith Alison Pack explores imagery that tells stories — stories that pursue cliches and stereotypes of femininity. “Eat Me, I’m Delicious,” a small sculpture in copper and sterling, is an example of such imagery. It’s part of “Materials: Hard & Soft.” Herrin spends a lot of her art musing the limitations of the body, and especially the way a woman’s life is shaped by her body and its restrictions. Sure, some of Herrin’s content is about mental stuff. But apart from her body of work — pun intended — Uterus Puppet could be a treatise on the short duration of female fertility. It could just as easily invoke the polarizing debate about reproductive freedom — the hand that rocks the cradle is said to rule the world, but can a woman get a grip on the levers of power if her arms are full with a child? What of Texas artist Neal Paustian? His work might strike the casual viewer as too rougharound-the-edges to make the mark for high art. And his single

sculpture isn’t shiny. Paustian has modeled the concrete opening of a well. A thick glass cover stands in for the cast metal sort that covers Texas ground access wells. It has this to say, literally: “When the well runs dry we know the worth.” Paustian is aghast at our collective ho-hum thinking on water, and his artistic voice is like that of a backyard prophet, long avoided.

The humorous Ohio artist L. Sue Szabo isn’t conflicted about merging the wholly human taste for finer things and a good joke. Her Sushi Brooches have all the hallmarks of genteel finery — silver tones, high gloss and fanciful color. But where an ivory

Soaking it up

SpongeBob’s back, on a zany venture up to the surface

Would that all of our brains resembled that of SpongeBob SquarePants — and we’re talking about his actual brain, like, the cerebral matter located somewhere inside that porous yellow body. In the thoroughly enjoyable (though somewhat exhausting) The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water, the tiny, scheming Plankton takes a surreptitious trip into one of those spongeholes and finds SpongeBob’s brain. It’s coated with cotton candy, rainbows and all manner of sweets. It’s enough to make a cynical little organism sick, but it makes us love sweet SpongeBob even more. As does director Paul Tibbitt’s new movie, which is zany and clever and fun (and in 3-D), as long as you can take 93 minutes of it. That may depend on

your age. The movie — the second feature-length outing for the durable Nickelodeon TV character, and the first since 2004 —begins somewhere above the undersea hamlet of Bikini Bottom, where SpongeBob lives. We meet a nefarious pirate character named Burger Beard (Antonio Banderas, in live action and game for anything), tracking down a precious ancient book via his treasure map. The book tells the story of Bikini Bottom — a device to bring newcomers up to speed. We learn how Bikini Bottom is addicted to Krabby Patties, the succulent burgers made only at Krusty Krab, the fast-food joint where SpongeBob (voiced by Tom Kenny) works for Mr. Krabs (Clancy Brown), who keeps the secret recipe stowed away in a vault. Back down in Bikini Bottom,

trucks keep being hijacked by some unknown force. His brash wife Anna (Jessica Chastain) isn’t afraid to bend rules or bash heads. David Oyelowo (Selma) plays the district attorney investigating Morales. Rated R, 125

rival restaurant owner Plankton is trying to steal the formula, as usual. He fails, but the formula disappears. The two rivals join forces to find it, and this quest drives the movie, with many a wacky tangent awaiting — including time travel and even space travel, up to a weird platform somewhere in the universe where a porpoise who sounds like Christopher Walken makes sure the planets don’t collide. SpongeBob and his posse — Squidward (Rodger Bumpass),

Sandy (Carolyn Lawrence) and of course starfish Patrick (Bill Fagerbakke) — end up traveling somewhere they’ve never been: up to the surface, and out of the water. Here, they assume their new, 3-D form, the better to run around the beach (peopled by live-action humans) and track down the villainous Burger Beard. Kids will be the prime audience for these energetic shenanigans. Adults may prefer the clever wordplay. “Unleash the condiments!” Krabs says at one point in a battle. “With relish!” SpongeBob replies. It’s striking to realize that SpongeBob is more than 15 years old in sponge years (the TV series’ creator, Stephen Hillenburg, is an executive producer here.) He’s isn’t slowing down.
