Good times rolling Lent’s coming: Send the seven deadly sins packing with jazz
S
weetwater Grill & Tavern will stage a Mardi Gras bash — with the help of the Vintage Jazz Society. The bar and grill has been the host for the local jazz society’s Mardi Gras celebration for about seven years. Local New Orleans-style band Strictly Dixie will play at 7 p.m. on the enclosed patio, with another ensemble from the jazz society (and some non-members) led by local guitarist and society
member Thad Bonduris starting at about 8 p.m. At 9 p.m., Bonduris and society member Ron Fink will open the bandstand for an open jam session. The Vintage Jazz Society first played Sweetwater about six years ago in the group’s first Mardis Gras event. Mardi Gras, which is largely a cultural celebration originating in New Orleans, is also a nod to the feast leading into Ash Wednesday and Lent — a liturgical sea-
son marked by intentional selfdenial and abstinence from carnal pleasures. The Mardi Gras event is the sole fundraiser for the Vintage Jazz Society, a local group that meets on the first and third Monday of the month for discussion of jazz written, performed and recorded between 1900 and 1930. On Fat Tuesday, the musicians play for whatever gets tossed in the tip jar. The donations help the

True to his roots
Pat Green spends a record tipping his hat to his influences
By Lucinda Breeding Features Editor
“A cover song is the best way to pay a compliment.”
P
at Green has been something of a favorite son in the Texas music scene long enough to give advice — and still smart enough to take it. If there’s one piece of advice he’s been true to, it’s “Know thyself,” and its corollary, “Be yourself.”

Pat Green 8 p.m. today at the Global Event Center inside WinStar World Casino, 777 Casino Ave., Thackerville, Okla. Tickets cost $10-$25. Visit www.winstarworldcasino.com or call 1-800662-6317.
That’s the answer he offered when asked why he kept his boots parked on the soil of the Lone Star State instead of making Nashville his home base. “I look at it with a business mind, too,” Green said. “Back when I started, 30 percent of country music that was bought was bought right here in Texas. Now, I don’t know if that holds true today, but it was one of the reasons why I wanted to be in Texas. This is where it was happening. And it just made sense to tour where you could be out among your fan base. Other than that, Texas is home for me.” There it is again: that idea that a musician can be his best writing what he knows. And any music or literature fan can name a title or two where the setting is as much a part of the story as the characters. Just be who you are, Green says. The rest will line up accordingly. Green plays at 8 p.m. today at WinStar World Casino as part of the Thackerville, Okla. casino’s Red Dirt music concert series. Green keeps his live set churned and ready with oldies, and he’ll also perform some tunes from Songs We Wish

Pat Green plays WinStar World Casino today in Thackerville, Okla. The established musician recently released an album of cover songs. We’d Written, Vol. 2. The 2012 album is Green’s second round in the studio with his most cherished songs by other artists. He puts his own stamp on Joe Ely’s “All Just to Get to You,” Shelby Lynne and Greg Ballard’s “Jesus on a Greyhound,” Tom Petty’s “Even the Losers” and Lyle Lovett’s “If I Had a Boat.” “A cover song is the best way to pay a compliment,” Green
said. “At least to me it is. There’s a hat for every head, and I can wear a lot of hats. I can try to do a song as close to the original as possible, like I did with the Lyle Lovett tune, and then I can turn around and do it a lot differently, like I did with ‘Even the Losers.’ There’s no right way to cover a song.” Green said there wasn’t anything special about the selection process — though he and
his band suggested more titles than would fit on an album (or maybe even a box set). “There was nothing methodical about it,” he said. “Pizza is great for leveling things. We discussed it over pizza, and then we went into the studio and recorded the songs.” As for arriving at the 10track album, Green said a musician has to follow his heart when it comes to making a

record that sounds coherent and whole. When he was just starting out, Green said he had a rule: He’d perform one song each by Springsteen and Petty. He’s still drawn to those musicians and still appreciates much of their music. But that rule has loosened and his favorites have informed his songs more deeply. Like a lot of Southwestern songwriters, Green tours in “little blocks,” meaning that he travels on weekends for shows but stays as close to home as he can. “You can tour pretty much in two ways — big blocks or little blocks. The little blocks work for me,” he said. “I’m older now. I have a family, and being home more is important to me.” Green is a Grammy nominee with deep cred in Red Dirt and country music. When it comes to songwriting, Green said he usually visits the well when he’s thirsty, so to speak. “Certainly, there are guys out there who feel like you’re not a musician unless you are writing music all day, every day. I’m the opposite,” he said, adding that he doesn’t do “anything in particular” to keep his creativity going. “When I need to write music for an album, I’ll do it. If I don’t, I won’t,” he said. “I look at it like this: You don’t know you’re out of milk until you’re out of milk. I write when I need to — when I’m ready to make a record.” Up next on Feb. 21 in WinStar’s Red Dirt music series: Josh Abbott Band. Night, an open house for first through fifth grades, at Selwyn College Preparatory School, 3333 W. University Drive. Event includes math and science games and a campus tour. To reserve a spot, e-mail

powerful single called “America’s Son” helped land national attention for Air Review, even though the Dallas band hasn’t played much outside of Texas. “This year will be our year to get out of state,” vocalist and guitarist Douglas Hale said. “We definitely have a great team in place now to help us get out there, tour and feel confident.” It’s likely Air Review will continue its ascent in 2013. With last month’s release of the band’s second album, Low Wishes, Air Review has garnered praise from not only local radio stations and press, but from the likes of the Huffington Post and CMJ. The indie-rock quintet began crafting its songs in 2008 in a desolate suburban

garage, putting out a selfreleased album in 2009. The band played seemingly endless shows and garnered good reviews, but still felt something was missing. After a year of reinvention, the band’s newly defined sound in “America’s Son” indicated it was on the right path. “America’s Son” became one of the most requested songs on KKXT-FM (91.7) and landed Air Review alongside Adele, Foster the People and Coldplay on the station’s Best Songs of 2011 list. “‘America’s Son’ was really the catalyst for the new record,” Hale said. He said it showcases the more folkdriven direction the band wanted to take with its sec-

Low Wishes was released Jan. 29 by Velvet Blue Music of Huntington Beach, Calif., and Dallas-Fort Worth’s Spune. For Low Wishes, Air Review retained 100 percent creative control — which can be both a good thing and a bad thing, Hale noted. Band members worked together to produce and engineer the album on their own. Air Review’s brand of folkpop has translated into dynamic live shows, sharing the same stage as Portugal. Hale said the Beatles, the Beach Boys, Little Dragon and Father John Misty have been inspiration to him, as well as other members of the band. Those numerous influence can be heard in Low Wishes, but Air Review’s sound also manages to stand alone among the many other folk and indie groups out today. Air Review will mark the release of Low Wishes tonight at Dan’s Silverleaf. Fans can also catch the band at Austin’s upcoming South by Southwest. Thin Line Film Fest: The Anderson Monarchs
E
2 p.m. Feb. 17 at the Campus Theatre, 214 W. Hickory St. Not rated, but suitable for ages 10 and older; 76 minutes.
By Lucinda Breeding ugene Martin discovered the Anderson Monarchs after he started coaching his daughter Sophie’s select soccer team when they lived in Philadelphia. There was one team Sophie and her teammates played that was different from all the others. The Anderson Monarchs were a team of black girls from urban Philly who didn’t have the resources of the other teams they played. They didn’t even have a practice field. In spite of all the perceived barriers keeping the Anderson Monarchs from select soccer dominance, the team was winning. A lot. The team was so successful that Sports Illustrated named it Sports Team of the Year in 2008. Martin and his daughter noticed the playmaking skills and dedication of the Monarchs firsthand. Their team went head-to-head with the Monarchs repeatedly. “I noticed that every time they played us, they won 5-1,” said Eugene Martin, a

professor of radio, television and film at the University of North Texas. “Every time we played them, our girls were like, ‘Oh no! Not them!’” Martin made the documentary named for the team. He’ll see the film make its regional premiere at Thin Line Film Fest, the sole documentary film festival in Texas, which opens Friday in downtown Denton. The documentary began its trek of the film festival circuit last August. “Most kids who play select soccer are from the suburbs,” Martin said. “And most of the kids playing are white. There aren’t very many minorities playing select soccer.” Martin met the Monarchs’ coach, Walter Stewart, and the two coaches became friends in spite of their team rivalry. They discussed filming the Monarchs and the project began.
Anderson Monarchs’ winning story told in local filmmaker’s work
“With the Monarchs, they aren’t just learning how to play a good game of soccer, they are learning leadership.” — documentary filmmaker Eugene Martin Martin said the Sport Illustrated recognition came two weeks after Martin met the writer while doing research for his film. After that, the London newspaper The Guardian called the Monarchs “the future of American soccer.” Martin describes his approach as an observational, immersive one. Rather than fill the documentary with interviews, he takes the viewer onto the field (and into the neighborhoods and front porches) to watch two players, 11-yearold Jlon and 10-year-old Kahlaa, in their formative years. The documentary follows them over three years as they
develop on the field and off. “As a filmmaker, I’m interested in immersing myself in a place,” Martin said. “All along the way, I am very honest about my process. As a father with a daughter they all knew, I was able to gain their trust. When I was there, I made it very clear I was a filmmaker. And before long, the girls didn’t even notice me. They’d see me and it would be like, ‘Oh, there’s Mr. Martin, that guy with the camera.’” The documentary is bound to put some viewers ill at ease, bringing up the familiar trope of disadvantaged black girls living in an urban center where at least one practice was stopped by nearby gunfire. Martin said the young athletes quickly transcend the uncomfortable shorthand seen in the media, where minorities are relegated to crime-ridden ghettos, surrounded by poor-performing schools and populated by low-income families. “The Anderson Monarchs are a pretty See MONARCHS on 11

happy bunch,” Martin said. “And this isn’t your typical film about winning or losing. This is about a team and these girls.” Framed by the rigors and discipline of soccer delivered by “Coach Walt,” the film examines girls who face enormous limitations but don’t accept them. Three teams make up the Monarchs. Stewart, who gave up a position at a Philadelphia law firm to teach and coach the Monarchs, has high expectations of his players. In turn, the film depicts players who expect as much — and maybe more — from themselves. “This film isn’t really about soccer,” Martin said. “It’s really about caring about our daughters, because our girls are under a lot of pressure to be a certain way and to look a certain way.” As he studied the Monarchs, Martin said he made a discovery. “Playing soccer does an enormous amount of good for these girls’ self-confidence,” he said. “With the Monarchs, they aren’t just learning how to play a good game of soccer, they are learning leadership. What we’ve seen is that as they do better in soccer, they do better in school.” One of the agreements the players make is that they can’t come to the practice field if they have bad grades. “They have practice three times a week, so the girls have to be able to organize their schoolwork — and anything else they do, really — around that schedule,” Martin said. When he began working on the documentary, the Anderson Monarchs were the only all-black girls select soccer team in the United States. The team’s success influenced the U.S. Soccer Foundation. Martin said the foundation is now focusing on developing soccer athletes in America’s urban centers. Martin, whose daughter is a junior soccer player at Guyer High School, said he hopes to screen the documentary for soccer program leaders and

OPENING FRIDAY Identity Thief An account representative travels halfway across the country to confront the con artist who has stolen his identity and is emptying his bank account. With Jason Bateman, Melissa McCarthy, Jon Favreau and Amanda Peet. Rated R, 111 minutes — Los Angeles Times
Emily (Rooney Mara) falls into a deep depression after her husband’s release from prison in Side Effects.
NOW PLAYING Bullet to the Head Sylvester Stallone and director Walter Hill (48 Hrs., The Warriors) join forces for a hard-hitting exercise in beefy, brainless fun with this assassin-cop buddy movie set in New Orleans. Jimmy Bobo (Stallone), a tired and tattooed hit man, vows revenge when his partner (Jon Seda) gets sliced up. He teams with an out-of-town detective (Taylor Kwon) who’s been sent to investigate the murder of his former partner. Rated R, 91 minutes. — The Hollywood Reporter Les Miserables (###) Tom Hooper (The King’s Speech) directed this big, brassy version of the stage musical with Hugh Jackman playing Jean Valjean, the wanted man followed and persecuted by the obsessive Inspector Javert (Russell Crowe). The film’s production values make the film visually engaging while the music never stops. Rated PG-13, 157 minutes. — Boo Allen Warm Bodies The latest permutation of the zombie screen phenomenon places heart over horror and romantic teen angst over sharp social commentary. The story’s dystopian versions of Romeo and Juliet are Nicholas Hoult’s R — he can’t remember his full name — and Teresa Palmer’s Julie, whose meetcute involves a shoot-’em-up that ends badly for her boyfriend (Dave Franco). Writer-director Jonathan Levine works from Isaac Marion’s young-adult novel. Rated PG-13, 97 minutes. — HR Zero Dark Thirty (###) Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker) directed this movie concerned with the yearslong process behind finding and then executing Osama bin Laden. Jessica Chastain stars as the dedicated CIA agent who doggedly continued on a long and tedious journey to piece together the clues that will lead to the film’s final, well-executed assassination sequence. With an excellent supporting cast. Rated R, 157 minutes. — B.A.
Open Road Films
Desired ‘Effects’ By Christy Lemire AP Movie Critic
If Side Effects is indeed Steven Soderbergh’s final film, as he’s said it will be after toying with the notion of retirement for a couple of years now, then intriguingly it feels like he’s coming full circle in some ways to the film that put him on the map: the trailblazing, 1989 indie Sex, Lies and Videotape. Both are lurid genre exercises, laid bare. Both focus on the intertwined lives of four central figures, including a scene in which one of the men interviews one of the women on video, hoping to unearth a hidden truth. Both movies are about danger, secrets and manipulation, filled with characters who aren’t what they initially seem, all of which Soderbergh depicts with his typically cool detachment. Twists and double crosses occur and schemes are revealed as layer upon layer of Scott Z. Burns’ clever script gets peeled away; it’s actually going to be difficult to discuss Side Effects without giving too much away. Yet Soderbergh approaches such dramatic events with the
Side Effects Rated R, 106 minutes. Opens Friday.
same chilly tone that has marked so much of his work, even as the developments grow more than a little implausible. Just as matter-of-fact is the way the characters rattle off the names of the prescription drugs they’re on and discuss which ones work better than others, from Wellbutrin to Zoloft to the fictitious Ablixa. In an accurate reflection of our impatient times, everyone in Side Effects wants the quick fix: for their finances, careers, reputations, sex lives and, most fundamentally, their moods. Fittingly in this New Yorkset thriller, Soderbergh has shot and edited the film (under his usual pseudonyms of Peter Andrews and Mary Ann Bernard) crisply and efficiently, with occasionally hazy backlighting — one of his signatures — suggesting a dreamlike men-
It’s a shame Soderbergh is calling this his last film
tal state. He puts us on edge from the start, through Hitchcockian visual choices, with clues that a bloodbath has occurred in a Manhattan apartment. Flashing back three months earlier, we see that pretty, 20-something Emily (Rooney Mara) has pulled up to a prison to visit her husband, Martin (Channing Tatum, in his third Soderbergh film following last year’s Haywire and Magic Mike). He’s at the end of a four-year sentence for insider trading, which destroyed the lavish Greenwich lifestyle she’d come to enjoy. Once he’s released, though, Emily isn’t nearly as happy as one would expect her to be, and she falls into a deep and suicidal depression. When she goes to see psychiatrist Jonathan Banks (Jude Law), he prescribes her a new drug called Ablixa, which he’s testing out on a few patients as part of a lucrative deal with a pharmaceutical giant. Emily’s former therapist in Connecticut (Catherine ZetaJones, sly and stylish as always), whom Banks seeks out for guidance, also happens to
be a big proponent of this drug. Both are, in theory, in the business of helping people but they’re also opportunists to varying degrees of sleaziness. But then this magical pill starts showing some disturbing side effects and … well that’s really all we can say. The aforementioned really terrible and bloody thing occurs, which ruins careers and lives and drives people to madness. Or does it … ? No really, we gotta stop now. The complexity of emotion, confusion and loss at the film’s start gives way to some acrobatic trickery by the end, but Side Effects is never less than gripping or entertaining. Mara, who showed such fierce intelligence in David Fincher’s The Social Network and The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, is quietly chilling here. With her waif-like frame, chiseled facial features and steely eyes that reveal nothing, she’s like a mysterious child’s doll come to life. Here’s hoping this isn’t a true retirement for Soderbergh — at least so he can add Mara to his band of A-list regulars.
