Over the last six years, a feminist group at the University of North Texas has raised more than $75,000 in an effort to end violence against women. The group — the Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance — joins campuses across the country in producing the Obie Award-winning play, The Vagina Monologues. The alliance has made its two annual performances part of the larger, grass-roots movement called V-Day. Positioned deliberately near Valentine’s Day, the movement and the play raise money for local and global efforts that move women away from violence and toward self-sufficiency. To hear the organizers talk about the yearly project, the tens of thousands are second to the community that has grown up with it. “I don’t think about the money, said director, alliance member and UNT alumna Charlie Hughes. “People come up to you, whether they’ve seen it or been part of V-Day, and they say things like, ‘This has meant so much to me.’ None of us have business degrees. We’re just passionate about the movement and making people aware of the problem. The message we get out in that

small time frame is priceless. That’s not to say the money isn’t significant — or desperately needed. Ensler Producers choose a slate of local beneficiaries, and Ensler selects a global effort that receives a portion of each production’s proceeds. “All of our money goes back to the movement, said producer, alliance member and UNT alumna Jasmin Wipf. “We rent the hall, pay for security. We have kept our costs as low as we possibly can. We want as much money as possible to go to the cause. We’d like to make more money, but that’s not the goal. Wipf said she and the production committee set their sights on struggling agencies that help women and families. This year, three Dallas-Fort Worth agencies were chosen: New Beginning Center of Garland; Mosaic Family Services of Dallas, which runs a shelter for immigrant women and children; and Safe Haven of Tarrant County. Two agencies have an international scope: Women and Children of Darfur, via MADRE, and Women in Conflict Zones. Ensler’s interviews with hundreds of women. Though the title of the play is both provocative and accurate, the monologues are about women’s lives and experiences. Ensler refreshes the play regularly with new monologues, though some of the original pieces remain. It’s an audacious play that comes with a caution — mature themes abound, as characters talk baldly about the muchmaligned but much-attendedto female genitals, and how the rest of their lives have been affected by positive and negative attitudes about their bodies. Ensler’s play suggests that Hall, Will Rogers Memorial Center, 3401 W. Lancaster St. in Fort Worth. Tickets are $40, sold in advance only at www.tafb.org or by calling 817332-9177, ext. 110. culture — family, friends, school and church — shape women’s relationships with their most intimate selves. The UNT production ends by asking audience members to stand if they have been directly or indirectly affected by violence. Hughes said she’s staged the Monologues as if they were being told in a coffeehouse, during an open mic event. It plays with the idea of the intimacy of the work’s themes. “I had the idea of couches and a microphone, and there’ll be an emcee, Hughes said. “I really wanted to put the women in a community. The idea is there is a place where women get together. The Vagina Monologues has earned criticism for its unapologetically political aims, and for its association with feminist organizations. Wipf said that might account for some of the misconceptions about the event and the play — namely, that the movement excludes men and favors loud and angry lesbians. Anger and lesbianism are themes of a few of the monologues, but the play is hardly a one-note piece of theater, Wipf said. The event has attracted women and men who profess a range of beliefs. Men have been a part of UNT’s V-Day since the beginning. “And we’re very happy to
have them, Wipf said. “We’ve had all sorts of people come up to us after the show and tell us that they didn’t know what the show was about and that they were glad they saw it. We had a dorm meeting about the show the other day, just for people to get together and talk about it, and something that Charlie said was really good. She was talking about how the play is funny. She said, ‘If you can make people laugh, you can get them to listen.’ That’s true. This year’s performance assembles about 30 players. Some have survived violence, as have Hughes and Wipf. The dialogue about violence is renewed each year on campus when V-Day gathers steam. “I’m not someone who can sit back and say nothing, Hughes said. “I have to tell people what’s going on. LUCINDA BREEDING can be reached at 940-5666877. The frontman of the Chris Watson Band just scored a spot on the Blues Underground Network’s top artists and albums of 2010 for his album Just for Show. High-calorie pop-rock punch Ohio’s Lollipop Factory churns out party-worthy tunes They call themselves the Lollipop Factory, and the Columbus, Ohio, duo definitely coats its hard rock with refined sugar. Bekah Manning, the duo’s drummer and vocalist, teams with singer-guitarist David Tweed to make music that’s just familiar enough to make you remember Freddie Mercury singing, “Here we are, princes of the universe!” before the drums smash in. Lollipop Factory will play Saturday night at Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studios, sharing the stage with Shaolin Death Squad and the Fuss. Prepare to leave with a case of tinnitus. OPENING FRIDAY Barney’s Version (###1/2) Paul Giamatti plays Barney, an infinitely entertaining mix of querulousness, arrogance, pettiness and abundant generosity. Set in 1970s Montreal, and based on Mordecai Richler’s novel, the well-paced film flips among Barney’s three marriages, with Miriam (Rosamund Pike) being the most important, the mother of his children, and the target of much of his misconduct. Fight of fancy ‘The Eagle’ wings history, but soars with performances By Boo Allen Film Critic
Don’t look to The Eagle for good history. Despite its playful attitude towards accuracy, the new sword-and-sandals miniepic delivers some pretty photography and earnest performances. And it will make you wish you had paid more attention in history class. The Eagle is loosely based on Rosemary Sutcliff ’s popular 1954 novel The Eagle of the Ninth. The book and Jeremy Brock’s screenplay take some

NOW PLAYING The Dilemma (##1/2) Oscar-winning director Ron Howard takes a detour from big-budget epics with this modest relationship comedy about Ronny (Vince Vaughn), whose best friend (Kevin James) can’t make a commit-
liberties with British history for its redemptive story of a group of Roman warriors who venture into enemy territory sometime between 100 A.D. and 200 A.D. to retrieve their cherished eagle, an icon that means more to them than a Maltese falcon. The Eagle hits all its cylinders more as a simple, ripping-yarn action flick. Channing Tatum and Jamie Bell play the two
main warriors (it might be irreverent to mention that both the versatile performers jumpstarted their movie careers as dancers, Tatum in Step Up, and Bell in Billy Elliot). Tatum plays Marcus, a Roman officer stationed in England, and Bell is Marcus’ initially recalcitrant slave, Esca. Thrown together, their ultimate goal is to head north into Scotland, passing Hadrian’s new wall, in search of the remnants of a previous Roman garrison once lead by Marcus’ father and one shrouded in possible dishonor. Before the journey north, director Kevin MacDonald (Last King of Scotland) warms up with a few gritty battle
sequences, as Marcus dispatches several enemies. Curiously, The Eagle often sags in the action scenes, as director Macdonald and cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle render fight scenes with shakycamera jumbles made even more incoherent by Justine Wright’s confusing editing. Once the warriors finally reach the beautiful northern countryside of rugged coastlines and mysterious moors, Marcus and Esca display courage and fighting abilities, while also testing their loyalties. MacDonald hesitates to make the two into greaterthan-life figures, leaving them as fierce rustic warriors fulfilling their quest.

They don’t all have big names, but festival’s docs make their mark
By Lucinda Breeding Features Editor

t this year’s Thin Line Film Fest, documentary film fans can see all the titles the festival is bringing in. Festival Director Joshua Butler said in years past, audiences have had to decide which documentary they wouldn’t see when two must-see films screened at the same time. “This year, you can see all of the movies. You can watch one, wait an hour and then watch the next one,” Butler said. “That’ll be good for the people who come wanting to see everything.” But you don’t have to see everything at the state’s only documentary film festival. If your tastes run to the political, you can pick those from the festival schedule. If you want to see Academy Award nominees before the Oscars air on Feb. 27, you can catch those titles, too. There are student-made films, including up-and-coming documentary filmmakers from the University of North Texas’ Department of Radio, TV and Film. There are short documentaries and — as Thin Line’s tradition dictates — documentaries that deliberately blur the line between fact and fiction. Now in its fourth year, Butler said the festival is growing in the awards it offers. When filmmakers join the festival circuit, their eyes are generally on the prize of the top awards, which typically make it easier for the artists to make their next film. “Our top prize is a $10,000 value,” he said. “That’s a credit with Panavision, a really good film equipment company. You can do a lot with that kind of credit.” The short film that wins the top jury prize in that category will earn a $5,000 Panavision credit. The Euline and Horace Brock Award will be given to the audience favorites in both feature and short categories. Viewers have to vote by paper

ballot to participate. The best student short documentary will get the Videotex Best Student Documentary Award, which is a gift of $500 worth of production gear. Butler said the festival will screen 29 films: 14 features and 15 short films. And for the hardcore documentary fan, there are two panel discussions. Eddie Schmidt, director of the festival’s opening film, Troubadours, will join Andrew Thomas, who made The Anatomy of Vince Guaraldi. They will talk about how to make the most popular kind of documentary, the music documentary. The discussion starts at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Campus Theatre. At 7 p.m. Feb. 19, filmmakers come together to talk about the political nature of documentaries. The majority of documentaries touch on politics in

AWARD-WINNING This Way of Life Texas premiere. Against New Zealand’s isolated mountains, Peter and Colleen Karena raise their six children on the thin edge between freedom and disaster. As Peter hunts, trains wild horses and struggles to instill the values of independence and courage in his kids, his escalating struggle with his father has profound consequences for the entire Karena clan. Directed by Thomas Burstyn and produced by Sumner Burstyn. 84 minutes. Enemies of the People Texas premiere. The Khmer Rouge ran what is regarded as one of the 20th century’s most brutal regimes. In Enemies of the People, the men and women who perpetrated the massacres — from the foot soldiers who slit throats to the party’s ideological leader, Nuon Chea, a.k.a. Brother No. 2 — break a 30-year silence to give testimony never before heard or seen about the Killing Fields of Cambodia. Produced and directed by Thet Sambath and Rob Lemkin. 93 minutes. Waiting for Superman Filmmaker Davis Guggenheim reminds us that education “statistics” have names: Anthony, Francisco, Bianca, Daisy and Emily, whose stories make up the engrossing foundation of Waiting for Superman. As he follows a handful of promising kids through a system that inhibits, rather than encourages, academic growth, Guggenheim undertakes an exhaustive review of public education, surveying “dropout factories” and “academic sinkholes,” methodically dissecting the system and its seemingly intractable problems. Winner of Best Documentary Film at the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards. Directed by Davis Guggenheim and produced by Lesley Chilcott and Robert Richman. 111 minutes.

MUSIC The Anatomy of Vince Guaraldi The Anatomy of Vince Guaraldi is a musical journey through the brief life and times of the celebrated composer who pioneered the crossover of jazz and pop music — from his celebrated scores for the Peanuts animations to his megahit “Cast Your Fate to the Wind,” his nights in San Francisco’s North Beach at the Hungry I, and his groundbreaking Jazz Mass at Grace Cathedral. The film includes recently discovered and restored footage of Guaraldi’s appearances and recording sessions (captured by noted jazz writer and Rolling Stone co-founder Ralph J. Gleason). The film features new performances and insights from Dave Brubeck, Dick Gregory, George Winston, Jon Hendricks, Paul Krassner, Paul Mazursky and more. Directed by Andrew
Thomas, produced by Thomas and Toby Gleason. 116 minutes. Troubadours Framed by the illustrious careers of James Taylor and Carole King, Troubadours delves into the quietly explosive singer-songwriter movement in Los Angeles during the early 1970s. From their home at impresario Doug Weston’s Troubadour club in West Hollywood, artists like Taylor, King, David Crosby, Jackson Browne, Joni Mitchell and Kris Kristofferson wrote and performed songs with intimately personal lyrics, marking a transition from the politically focused songs of the ’60s. While some rock critics denigrated the music, the spirit among the musicians was one of collaboration and inspiration, and these singer-songwriters flourished. An official selection of the 2011 Sun-
dance Film Festival. Directed by Morgan Neville and produced by Eddie Schmidt. 91 minutes.
INTERNATIONAL El Andalón Dallas-Fort Worth premiere. El Andalón loosely translates as “The Walker,” but in Spanish it means much more: someone who moves nonstop, or follows his own path. That’s Sergio Castro: a multilingual, maverick humanitarian who treats burn patients seven days a week for free. Meanwhile, he builds schools and water projects in indigenous communities and poor neighborhoods around San Cristóbal de las Casas, Mexico. In Spanish with subtitles. Directed by Consuelo Alba and produced by John Speyer. 28 minutes. Killa-EF U.S. premiere. Killa-EF is not only a well-known Montreal-based
graffiti artist, he is also a very colorful character. Through this journey in the heart of his universe, viewers will discover the graffiti subculture as well as the addiction it can generate. Killa-EF is a student film from the Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema, Montreal. Directed and produced by Thomas Szacka-Marier. 15 minutes. Twiga Stars: Tanzania’s Soccer Sisters This feature-length documentary follows the Twiga Stars — Tanzania’s women’s soccer team — through the gruel of intensive training, the heartbreak of team cuts and the tragedies of life that strike along the way. But through it all one theme resounds: an undying love for the game of soccer. The Twiga Stars are not just a team. They are family, and together they fight on to prove wanawake wanaweza (meaning “women are capable”) and earn the support and attention of their soccer-crazy nation. Directed and produced by Nisha Ligon. 78 minutes. If These Walls Could Talk Texas premiere. This short documentary film was shot in anonymous closed psychiatric wards of Irish hospitals built around the turn of the 20th century. During 2004, director Anna Rodgers worked in one of the hospitals as a researcher on a series called The Asylum for RTE Television — the first time a production company was allowed inside one of these institutions. The motivation for this film came from Rodgers’ experiences with three of the long-stay patients, who had been there for more than 50 years and have since died with no known next of kin. Directed by Anna
