xide Gallery features two artists this month, Jane Ruestmann and Linka Behn. The exhibit puts Ruestmann’s work — with strong graphic and surreal elements — with Behn’s more interpretative work. The featured show includes mixed-media paintings and collage. Ruestmann’s No. 12 (above) uses repeating circular patterns to bring the eye to silhouetted birds. Small colored squares could suggest a number of ideas, from the literal (breadcrumbs?) to the metaphorical. Behn concentrates on figurative images, as in Dark Flower (left), which come into sharper focus from a loosely painted field of color. Oxide Gallery is located at 501 W. Hickory St., inside LinwoodAlford Florist. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday Courtesy photos/Oxide Gallery

olumbus, Ohio, artist RJD2 writes about his 10-year journey from making “little beats in my bedroom for release on an independent record label.” He’s still doing it. “OK,” he says, “to be fair, some things have changed — a bigger studio, I own the studio, I own the independent label, and instead of driving 10 blocks to a gig in my hometown, I fly 10 hours to a gig in another country.” RJD2 released the album The Colossus last year. And after a decade, the musician says his goal is unchanged: “to make a piece of music that is going to hopefully rearrange your brain.” Let your brain decide for itself when RJD2 offers up his clean, streamlined beats at Hailey’s Club, 122 W. Mulberry St., on Sunday night with Kenan Bell and Happy Chichester. Doors open at 9 p.m. Tickets are $14 for ages 21 and older, $16 for younger than 21. — Lucinda Breeding

Latest news: On Wednesday, the hardworking volunteer corps organizing what Pitchfork calls South by Southwest’s “baby cousin” announced the music lineup of the first night of North by 35 Music Conferette. Let’s put it this way: Downtown is going to be glutted with bands. It makes sense to kick off the festival with downtown Denton’s main music and nightlife venues full of the thumpa-thumpa. After all, it’s a festival that serves both casual listeners and brainiac music wonks who get shudders of pleasure at terms like “polyphonic” or “new media.” If you go to any of these places after dark on Thursday, March 11, you’ll be in the thick of things: Andy’s Bar, Banter, the Boiler Room, Cold Fusion Lounge, Dan’s Silverleaf,

Cyrano is famous for his large nose, a characteristic that he assumes will keep him in perpetual bachelorhood. His misery bumps up a notch when Roxane begs Cyrano to keep her young love, Christian, safe during the war. Christian gets Cyrano more entangled in deception when he gets his mentor to write romantic letters to Roxane under Christian’s name. Buster Maloney appears in Hydrant Cafe 208 W. orgive me. I might be the only person in North Texas who didn’t watch the Super Bowl. I know, I heard. That wasn’t the game to miss. It wasn’t just good, it was great. To be honest, I’m only so-so interested in professional football, unless it’s the Dallas Cowboys. I figure Jerry Jones could use one more person telling him how to run his team, and Tony Romo wants to feel the love, especially since Jessica is out of the picture. Otherwise, I root for the team with the finest uniforms. Since the Cowboys didn’t make it to the Super Bowl, I prayed for New Orleans. I needed the Saints to win. Moreover, I needed a good excuse to write about frog legs and alligators. Some of you are probably thinking I should’ve cheered for the Colts. Seriously, though, have you tried them? Frilly’s Seafood Bayou Kitchen boasts frog legs and alligator on the menu. N’awlins, and when you see one on the menu, you usually find the other. You can find them at both Frilly’s locations in Denton, which specialize in Cajun cuisine. Usually when I think Cajun, my mouth waters for dishes with andouille sausage, bowls of red jambalaya and shrimp gumbo, and plates piled high with blackened catfish or crawfish etouffee, with dirty rice and jalapeno corn bread. You can get all those good eats at both Frilly’s, too. I was on a mission for frog legs and alligator, however — which, despite their popularity in the South, haven’t quite made it to America’s Top 10 of favorite foods.

I ordered mine fried from Frilly’s Seafood Bayou Kitchen, with a side of red beans and rice. They came with seafood cocktail sauce and tartar sauce for dipping. I started with the alligator, which, covered in batter, looked a lot like popcorn shrimp. It even had a bit of a chewy, shrimp-like texture but more closely resembled cooked turkey breast. The frog legs were surprisingly meaty, despite their tiny drumstick size. I expected them to taste like chicken, but they definitely didn’t. Instead they tasted like — well — frog legs. They were very fresh and somewhat gamey, more flavorful than the alligator. I can’t say I’m a big fan, but

or the third year, Denton will host Thin Line Film
Fest, an international doc-
umentary festival that runs Feb. 1721. During the five-day event, 46 films will be screened — with an even split between features and shorts. Moviegoers will have the opportunity to go to numerous world, Southwest and Texas premieres and view 13 international films representing nine countries. In addition, 25 filmmakers from as far away as New York City and Japan will attend screenings of their works. The festival opens Wednesday with the critically acclaimed GasLand, followed by five documentaries from the 2009 Oscar shortlist: Beaches of Agnes, the autographical film written and directed by longtime filmmaker Agnes Varda; Garbage Dreams, which follows two Egyptian men who work and live in a Cairo slum called Garbage City; The Most Dangerous Man in America, about Daniel Ellsberg and the Pentagon Papers; The Cove, which follows a group of animal rights activists as they uncover a terrible secret; and Burma VJ, which has won awards all over the globe for its look at the unrest in Burma. Films named to the Oscar shortlist are later whittled down to the nominees. Of the Thin Line films, The Most Dangerous Man in America, The Cove and Burma VJ are nominated for Academy Awards this year.

GasLand, by filmmaker and director Josh Fox, chronicles a topic of concern to many living in North Texas — natural gas drilling. The film won the U.S. Documentary Special Jury Prize at Sundance Film Festival last month. The Denton screening will mark the film’s Texas premiere. The documentary seeks to uncover the consequences of the largest domestic natural gas drilling boom in U.S. history, taking a specific look at

The method is exempt from the Safe Drinking Water Act and other environmental protection laws, which has enabled extensive and increased drilling in 34 states. Fox’s disturbing finds include water that can be lit on fire straight out of the faucet, chronically ill residents of drilling areas all over the country who all have the same mysterious symptoms, large bodies of toxic waste that kill cattle and vegetation, and well blowouts and gas explosions that Fox finds covered up by state and federal regulatory agencies. Patrick Dempsey and Jennifer Garner are some of the many stars appearing in the lukewarm romantic comedy Valentine’s Day.
OPENING FRIDAY Beeswax (###) Sharply observed, low-budget character piece from director Andrew Bujalski (Funny Ha Ha) focuses on the lives and relationships of twin sisters (played by reallife sisters Tilly and Maggie Hatcher), one of which operates a fledgling vintage clothing store in Austin. The film’s focus is mostly on how communication, or lack thereof, affects our daily lives. Bujalski isn’t concerned with much in the way of plotting, but his naturalistic style carries a modest charm, and the characters and performances convey genuine intimacy. Not rated, 100 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — Todd Jorgenson Crazy Heart (###) Jeff Bridges offers a stunning performance in an otherwise contrived character study about the redemption of a washed-up country music star addicted to booze and women, and who finds himself alone and bankrupt — both financially and creatively. Things improve when he meets a journalist (Maggie Gyllenhaal) with a young son, but his vices get in the way. While the story takes a familiar arc, Bridges and a cool soundtrack make it worthwhile. Rated R, 111 minutes. — T.J. Creation (###) Muddled but intriguing biopic about Charles Darwin, the 19th century scientist best known for his theory of evolution. It tracks Darwin’s (Paul Bettany) family life that includes his God-fearing wife (Jennifer Connelly) and the death of one of his daughters. That, along with Darwin’s psychologically crippling conflict of faith, contributes to his descent into madness. The film’s perspective is heavy-handed and its presentation is stuffy, yet Bettany’s portrayal is fascinating and the film does offer provocative insight into its subject. Rated PG-13, 108 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — T.J. The Last Station (##1/2) Despite several Oscar nominations, this period piece directed by Michael Hoffman never offers anything gripping. Christopher Plummer plays Leo Tolstoy, who nears his last days, while a feud brews about his estimable estate. His wife (Helen Mirren) pleads for the family, while a questionable visionary (Paul Giamatti) pleads for the common man. James McAvoy is the eager acolyte caught in the middle. Interesting enough, but nothing out-

Artificially sweet By Boo Allen Film Critic
Valentine’s Day
Like many of the sugary confections prevalent this week, Valentine’s Day may not be what you wanted for the allegedly romantic day, but it is just about what you would expect. Take the sappy Love, Actually and trade its Christmastime trappings and its London setting for Valentine’s Day in Los Angeles, and the result is this superficially complex yet ultimately predictable romantic comedy. Not surprisingly, superficial and predictable are words closely linked to director Garry Marshall, the one-time television maven who graduated to turning out assembly-line
movie schlock (Dear God, Exit to Eden). Here, Marshall follows Katherine Fugate’s simplistic script involving a series of romances, near-romances, fatal romances, and various other romantic and comedic diversions. They play out with a frequently changing structure that simply calls attention to the film’s artificiality. In addition, many of the scenes look

At the Magnolia and the Angelika Plano. — Boo Allen Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief (##1/2) Chris Columbus directs this heavily effects-laden movie based on Rick Riordan’s young adult novel about young Percy Jackson (Logan Lerman), who learns of his demi-god status as son of a Greek god and mortal mother. He must travel with his two friends (Brandon T. Jackson
and Alexandra Daddario) to the underworld to rescue his mother, while Zeus, Hades, and his father, Poseidon, battle over some lightning bolt. Or something. Decently entertaining if not particularly substantial. rushed and sloppy, as if they were first takes that Marshall was too hasty to polish. Any allure provided by Valentine’s Day comes from the star-studded cast who drop in and out of roles that never seem to fit. One aged couple, Shirley MacLaine and Hector Elizondo, seems ludicrously mismatched, as does an illtimed confession of a long-ago infidelity. Ashton Kutcher tests his likeability in his role as a florist whose girlfriend (Jessica Alba) turns down his Valentine’s Day marriage proposal, which then propels him to realize that maybe his one true love is his lifelong best friend (Jennifer Garner). Marshall juggles these narra-
tives — along with others — yet never seems comfortable or natural with any of the mismatched couples. He randomly injects his customary use of pratfalls, clumsy physical comedy and broad humor. However mismatched, the competent cast (including Julia Roberts, George Lopez, Bradley Cooper, Taylor Swift and Patrick Dempsey), provides occasional moments of mirth. And running at more than two hours, a few laughs can be mined from the saccharin-laced detritus. But don’t look for much more than a laugh or two.
