The comedy reveals the oft-humorous results of Edie Frazier’s plot to spice up her sex life with husband, Gus, through the use of a self-help re-
cording. The show is the company’s entry into the American Association of Community Theatre’s AACTFest 2015 contest. The comedy, starring Julie Brinker and Damon Wadyko as Edie and Gus, advanced from the “quad” competition of the festival and will compete at the state contest in New Mexico in June. ishka Shubaly documents his wasted years in his third full-length album, Coward’s Path. Released last week on In Music We Trust, Shubaly’s latest is a meditation on a misspent chance. The album includes 12 tracks of drinking songs, snapshots from a life careening out of control — tunes about death, darkness, failure and the cold comfort of oblivion. All of them were plucked from a time Shubaly spent opening for Doug Stanhope — an unforeseen perk after his 2007 release How to Make a Bad Situation Worse came out and won the love of critics, but not the masses. By 2008, Shubaly was bogged down in booze, drugs and chaos. He got sober in 2009. Coward’s Path was recorded after Shubaly met rock bottom with his head and his heart. He’ll perform at Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studios on Friday with JT Habersaat and the Altercation Punk Comedy Tour, which includes Brian Breckinridge, Clint Werth, Matthew Solomon and Alex Smelser. Doors open at 9 p.m., and cover is $6, $8 for ages 20 and younger. Rubber Gloves is at 411 E. Sycamore St.

Then Phelan Beale left his wife and his daughter, but landed not far from their oceanfront home, Grey Gardens, in East Hampton. And over the next 50 years, the

ince its release in 2012, E.L. James’ novel Fifty Shades of Grey has grabbed hold of taboos and brought the masses into a new world of sexual visibility. With the film adaptation hitting screens tonight, local business owners and readers reflect on the impact of the erotic novel series.

Business owner Melissa Vardas says My Spicy Treasures has benefited from the book’s success and the anticipation leading up to the film. Vardas launched My Spicy Treasures in 2001. “We’ve carried these things from the getgo,” Vardas said. “These products have been out there for years, and Fifty Shades brought it to the forefront.” Vardas said bondage accessories, handcuffs, blindfolds and Ben Wa balls are among the popular items. Ben Wa balls are featured in one of the novel’s infamous intimate scenes. “When the book came out, we had husbands coming in asking for these balls,” Vardas said. “They would say, ‘My wife was reading Fifty Shades of Grey and was asking about these things.’” Fifty Shades of Grey — and the books that came after, Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed — won loyal fans and rabid critics. Fans and critics are attracted to and repelled by the story itself: college student and protagonist Anastasia Steele walks into the sexual fetish world of bondage and discipline by way of brooding, cool billionaire Christian Grey. Texas Woman’s University student Savannah Peer wrote a paper on author E.L. James for one of her hardest classes — advanced grammar and composition. Peer, a senior, said she’d never read erotic fiction until a woman she’d once worked for lent her the book.
Priscilla McCall’s in Denton keeps a supply of E.L. James novels in stock. “I read it in two days and wanted to read the next two right away,” Peer said. Peer said she opened the book with an open mind, and by the time she finished the series, she said the heroine was not the imperiled damsel Grey haters make her out to be. Anastasia Steele isn’t a woman in an abusive relationship, Peer said. “I think Anastasia was the dominant one in the relationship,” she said. “Sure, in the first book, Christian Grey was always going after her. She’d leave him and he’d go after her, but Anastasia was always the one with the power.” Peer said she watched interviews with James, and read as much as she could find about the author and the series. When assigned to write a paper about a celebrity or a person of influence, Peer’s boyfriend reminded her that she’d studied up on James and the Grey phenomenon. Her paper earned the highest grade in the class, Peer said. Peer has cleared her schedule for the movie — even though she wishes actor Ian Somerhalder had won the role of Christian Grey See GREY on 10

Grey instead of dark-eyed Irishman Jamie Dornan. “I’ve already got my tickets and I’m forcing my boyfriend to go with me,” she said. The excitement around the movie has some people worried. Leawood, Kansas-based AMC Theatres recently announced a ban on costume play tied to the film and book in its cinemas around the country. That means no fans dressing up and using the stuff of sexual bondage, such as whips, blindfolds and chokers. “We do not permit weapons (real or fake), or props/costumes that would make guests uncomfortable, or detract from the moviegoing experience,” AMC spokesman Ryan Noonan told the website Mashable. An AMC outlet is in The Shops at Highland Village, and nearby at the Grapevine Mills Mall and Stonebriar Centre in Frisco. Cinemark Theatres, based out of Plano, couldn’t be reached for comment on any Grey-themed costume bans at its cinemas. Vardas said that while My Spicy Treasures’ business simmered for a bit following the book’s release, the announcement of the film adaptation
kicked things back up again. Sex toy companies began adapting to this new Fifty Shades world, she said. “When the book first came out, there was a huge uptake and increase in sales,” Vardas said. “When the movie [news] started within the last year, companies started changing their packaging to black or gray, even though the product has been the same for years.” Copies of the book at the Denton Public Library have been hard to keep around, library assistant Leslie Couture said. “There are four people in the waiting list at any given time,” Couture said. “We only have four copies of the book.” Couture said Fifty Shades has gained popularity at different times — when each new book in the series came out, and as the film release draws near. Popularity prompted the library to purchase more copies of James’ books, Couture said. Installments in the series are also available in digital and audio formats from the library. Vardas believes the acceptance of the book by average readers has helped bring fetish sexuality out of the shadows. “The book brought people’s sexual fantasies to the forefront,” she said. “Maybe now we can talk about something or try something.” Some critics of the novel and
the film believe it glorifies bondage and, in turn, glorifies abuse. The American Family Association, a nonprofit group that says it promotes traditional family values, is campaigning for theaters to reject the film. “Nothing in Fifty Shades of Grey builds up society, respects or empowers women or demonstrates healthy relationships,” association President Tim Wildmon said in an interview with Yahoo. “Both movie theaters and moviegoers can stand up to this kind of disgusting content that’s touted as ‘entertainment’ and choose not to show or pay to see the film.” In addition, Twitter users have launched a campaign using the hashtag #50ShadesOfAbuse to criticize the film. Vardas disagrees, saying the film and novels are positive, and serve to eliminate sexual taboos. “It’s a good thing,” Vardas said. “It brings sexual relations into the forefront in the mainstream media. Sex seems to not be as taboo as it was seven or eight years ago.” Michelle Rodgers, a violence intervention and prevention counselor for Denton County Friends of the Family, said she read the series after a few female clients said they wished they could find a partner like Christian Grey. “It romanticizes the violence in a sexual relationship, and it
romanticizes a power differential where Christian Grey is cruel to Anastasia, and chooses to continue to be cruel to her,” Rodgers said. “Sexual violence isn’t about sex, as a lot of people might believe. Violence in relationships is about power and control.” Grey’s behavior matches that of real-life abusers — demeaning his intimate partner, telling her what to wear and, eventually, pressing her to end a long friendship. Fans of the book say Grey is a reformed man by the end of the series. Not quite, Rodgers said. Grey still “punishes” Anastasia — his wife by the end of the series — for perceived slights. In the end, love doesn’t quite conquer all, and the ideal of transforming a dangerous partner by love alone is a belief Rodgers said abuse survivors already struggle to overcome. “Christian Grey is never accountable for punishing Anastasia, and we’re trying to teach the men we work with to be accountable for the choices they make,” Rodgers said. “With a book like this, it can make people think, ‘Well, he got away with it. Why can’t I get away with it?’” NICHOLAS FRIEDMAN can be reached at 940-5666897. LUCINDA BREEDING can be reached at 940-566-6877.
DENTON SHADES OF GREY PLAYLIST And here’s a playlist of music by Denton artists who could provide a chaser to the movie, too. 1. “Socially Awkward,” Shiny Around the Edges. From the album Denton’s Dreaming. It’s not overtly sexual, but near the end, husband-and-wife bandmates Michael and Jenny Seman sing, “Just put your clothes back on ...” 2. “Testosterone,” Bubba Hernandez. In this track from Big Pounding Heart, Hernandez explains why this particular dog has trouble staying on the porch, if you get our drift. Again, it’s an explanation, not an apology. 3. “White Heat,” Jessie Frye. In this track from Obsidian (which counts as a shade of gray, by the way), Frye sings about the sensations of falling in love. 4. “Original Sin,” Kaela Sinclair. From her 2013 release Sun & Mirror, the narrator in this throbbing song is trying to get the apple of her eye to take a bite, already. 5. “Freak in Need,” Xegesis. Back when Ritchy Flo and Unrill were a hip-hop team, they added this ode to a voracious club girl on Aftershock. The team takes the submission role, with Unrill saying, “I’m easy to teach.” 6. “Queen of Hopes & Dreams,” the Holler Time. This song is sexy on the merit of its bluesy bass line alone, but the burning, caterwauling guitar speaks the language of lust, too. From Feels Like Home. — Lucinda Breeding

Marcel’s screenplay of E.L. James’ bestselling novel will find much to like and dislike. The likable elements will leave viewers wanting more, while among the dislikes will surely be a Sopranos-like ending that will send most home unsatisfied, or baffled, or simply angry about how the film sets up a possible sequel.
