Improv troupe headed to UNT

he Second City’s Improv All-Stars are taking leave of Chicago, their home base, for a night of improvisation and sketch comedy at 8 p.m. Monday at the University of North Texas’ Murchison Performing Arts Center. The comedy company has had troupes and stage shows in Chicago and Toronto for more

than 50 years, and has launched the careers of the likes of John Candy, Fred Willard and Eugene Levy. More recently, Second City has groomed Tina Fey and Steve Carell. Three touring companies are part of the Second City tradition, and it’s one of the touring companies that will travel to

Denton. The audience should come prepared to decide the outcome of the show. No topic or subject matter is off-limits. The evening of comedy is presented by the UNT Fine Arts Series. Tickets cost $10 for adults, and $5 for UNT faculty, staff and alumni association mem-

Film considers twist on typical love story

15 years. P-Orridge doesn’t scramble up a Ferris wheel or start hormonal lover spats in the rain. No, P-Orridge embarked on a menu of surgeries to make him look more like his beloved Lady Jaye. By now, his blunt-cut, bleached blond hair, carefully quizzical brows and impossibly high cheekbones make him look more like Lady Jaye than the doeeyed, heavy-browed Londoner of his youth. “We wanted to consume each other,” the artist says.

And Lady Jaye returned the favor. Director Marie Losier probes the pair’s unseemly world to pull back the veil on a mad, dizzying dash the two made to become one — or to draw as close to that as possible. At any rate, the pair ended up with similar breast implants, facial features and style. Losier considers the film a rebellion against the dehumanization of the body and a refreshing brand of Romantic consciousness.

Texas Woman’s University art faculty member Corky Stuckenbruck joins painter Mark Smith in a two-artist exhibit, “A Brief History of Color,” in the Gough Gallery at the Center for the Visual Arts, 400 E. Hickory St. The exhibit runs through Feb. 25. The exhibit is the annual gala show for the Dentonbased Visual Arts Society of Texas. The exhibit opened late last month, and a reception will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the arts center. Classical guitarist Polly Maynard will perform at the reception. Both artists include work

n Wednesday, Texas Woman’s University Drama Department opens its third play of the season with Lisa Kron’s Well. The play runs through Feb. 24. Directed by professor Patrick Bynane, Well is based on Kron’s experiences growing up with a mother whose social activism healed her community, all the while privately battling her

own health problems. This comedy begins innocently enough. But gradually, actors rebel against the director and the story refuses to follow the order created by the author. A 9-year-old bully tries to derail the plot, and Kron’s mother nearly takes over the theater. The New York Times listed Well among the year’s best

plays, it was anthologized in Best Plays of 2003-2004, and it was nominated for two Tony Awards in 2006. TWU’s production features student actors Taylor Reed, Averie Bell, Denise Holcomb, Jasmine King, Kayla Harris, Julia Bodiford and Jose Olivarez. Lighting design is by TWU technical director Michael Stephens, the set is by

Like father, like son looks to be the takeaway thought behind A Good Day to Die Hard, the absurd, actionpacked new thriller once again starring Bruce Willis as John McClane. The gags come easy, both on-screen and off, as the 56year-old Willis assumes the role of action hero, a mantle that now looks set up to be passed down to Jai Courtney, a likable enough young Aus-

tralian actor who plays prodigal son Jack to father John. In this Die Hard, the two grit their teeth, furrow their brows, drive maniacally through Moscow traffic, escape inescapable situations, and blow away their adversaries with various arsenals. Like father, like son. John Moore directed this latest incarnation from a script by Skip Woods that finds John McClane traveling to Moscow when he learns his estranged son Jack is facing a murder charge. But tables turn, and immediately upon arrival, John hijacks a car to help his escaped son flee from a bombed courthouse while being pursued by an army of bad guys.

It’s quickly revealed that Jack is a CIA agent out to thwart a nuclear threat. But more important than world safety is the enduring rift between father and son, one made more obvious by Jack’s insistence on calling his father by his first name. Family relations trump nuclear holocausts any day, particularly when you can squeeze more black humor from them. And humor seems to be the overriding emotion as McClane pere et fils fly through a continuous series of car chases, standoffs, explosions and escapes, one leading to the next with little time to reflect on the mounting absurdities. to remind everyone: “But I’m on vacation.” Computer-generated imagery has made scenes possible that previously could only have been imagined, as helicopters ram into buildings, cars fly over lanes of freeways, and explosions send bodies flying, all resulting in minor scrapes for the indestructible McClanes. Woods’ script eventually sends the intrepid Americans to Chernobyl, a symbolically sinister site ripe for a gang of international criminals to hijack enough uranium to destroy the planet. But the army of nefarious villains never counted on facing a McClane, much less two.

ospel Meets Jazz: A Black History Celebration” started out as a faculty recital — one of those regular performances meant to show local music lovers what the faculty of the University of North Texas College of Music have been doing outside of the classroom but inside of their own studios. It grew into a bash that merges perhaps two of the greatest artistic treasures developed by black musicians in

Black history to be celebrated in song with UNT concert concocted by Brad Leali America. There’s the slow-climbing, improvisational fire of gospel music. Then there are the complex and playful rhythms of jazz. Both forms of music are uniquely American, and both were conceived and born in the diverse culture of black

America. The faculty member who is making this mash-up happen? Saxophone man and UNT faculty member Brad Leali. Local jazz fans have gotten to know Leali though his informal concerts on the patio of Sweetwater Grill & Tavern. The professor and musician built a

concert with music from some of the greats — jazz virtuosos John Coltrane, Duke Pearson and contemporary gospel innovator Kirk Franklin (who has had UNT students nominated for Grammy Awards in the past) and the original work of pianist, composer and arranger Claus Raible. It’s Tarantino at his most puerile and least inventive, with the premise offering little more than cold, nasty revenge and barrels of squishing, squirting blood. formed on the alto saxophone. UNT awarded the monarch an honorary doctorate for his longtime study, performance and promotion of jazz. Raible has been working on the program for about a year, and Leali refined the concert as a whole from its origins as a concert performed at the Texas Music Educators Association convention in 2007. For Leali, the program is much bigger than a faculty recital. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a tribute to the contributions black Americans made to the countryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s culture â&#x20AC;&#x201D; before and after the civil rights movement. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Most of our students know something of the history, but thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s different than singing the music and feeling that tie to history.
