Sundress wears it well S
undress has a habit of spreading the sound around. The Denton band’s straightforward melodies and up-tempo rhythms seep out to fill any room the band plays, achieving both a vital kind of energy and a mellow atmosphere.
TURN IT UP Best bets for music this weekend
When it comes to Sundress, psychedelic music is neither trance-dance fodder nor a song that starts out as an ordered thing that dissolves into chaos. From start to finish, Sundress songs make sense, but not so much that you’re never surprised. The quintet plays Hailey’s Club on Saturday with Denton’s Spooky Folk and Retro Run, Fort Worth’s the Hanna Barbarians and Montana’s Western Skies. Sounds like: a soundtrack for an afternoon hike alongside a lake; a mellow Sunday afternoon when the weather’s warm and the denim worn. They’re with the band: Ryan McAdams, lead singer and guitarist; Drew McCary, bass; Kennon Talley, guitar; Jim Harrington, keyboard; and Brack Cantrell, drums. Details: Doors open at 9 p.m. Saturday. Players perform works composed by Bach’s sons
T
he Denton Bach Players will perform in concert at 8 p.m. Saturday in Voertman Hall, the small concert hall at the University of North Texas Music Building. The players, who are the core musicians who accompany the Denton Bach Choir in performances by the Denton Bach Society, will perform music by composers Carl Philipp Emanuel, Johann Christian and Wilhelm Friedemann — all sons of Johann Sebastian Bach. “Since the pieces are all by sons of J.S. Bach, the program forms an interesting snapshot of compositional development between the high baroque and classical eras,” said player Andrew Justice. “Wilhelm Friedemann, for example, Justice adhered the most to his father’s contrapuntal strength, and composed in many of the same genres — keyboard music, sacred vocal pieces and chamber music. “Carl Philipp Emanuel, on the other hand, used counterpoint more subtly to explore overt emotional expression in his music. One of the pieces we’re performing is a bizarre juxtaposition of sanguine and melancholic states, contrasting faster and cheerful sections with slower and morose ones.” Justice said Johann Christian, the youngest son, lived in London and used highly melodic writing, which attracted the admiration of a young Mozart. “By studying the Bach sons’ chamber music, we are exploring a transitional time in music history,” Justice said. In this program, Justice said, the musicians — all of whom are accustomed to playing baroque music on historical instruments — will tackle music that is more technically

ducted by Lewisville Lake Symphony’s music director, Adron Ming. The repertoire for the Young Artists’ Competition is carefully chosen in alignment with young musicians’ physical development to avoid injury. “Parents and teachers believe that flashy pieces by composers like Liszt and Rachmaninoff
tend to win competitions, Ming said in a press release. “The problem is that Liszt, for example, engineered his compositions so his large hands could help him play other pianists under the table. It’s inappropriate to expect a student who is physically much smaller and still has a maturing bone and muscle structure to take on the same piece of music. Pamela Mia Paul, regents professor of piano at the University of North Texas and a member of the symphony’s board of directors, said the competition repertoire is also chosen with the students’ musical development in mind. She said it is “critically important that students learn repertoire by Beethoven, Mozart, Haydn and Mendelssohn before tackling larger, more “competition winning works. The annual competition is open to wind players, string players and pianists in sixth through eighth grade. Appli-
cants must first submit a preliminary CD and are then notified by mail whether they have been selected to compete for a panel of three judges in front of a live audience. This year, three winners were selected, and they will equally split the $1,200 grand prize. Steven Tsai is a sophomore at St. Mark’s School of Texas in Dallas and has studied the clarinet for six years. He studies with Deborah Fabian, principal clarinetist with the Dallas Wind Symphony. Brian Zhao is an eighthgrader at Renner Middle School in the Plano school district. He began playing cello at 9 years old and has studied with Jungshin Lewis, principal cellist of the Richardson Symphony Orchestra, since the fourth grade. Emily Tan, a sophomore at Jasper High School in Plano, began playing piano at age 6 with her current teacher, Dallas-based pianist Yifan Liu.

omposer Jake Heggie says he feels privileged to have worked with some of the greatest opera perform-
ers of our time. And yet there’s something especially gratifying about working with students, something Heggie is doing as a fellow of the University of North Texas Institute for the Advancement of the Arts, a new university program that brings professionals to campus to work with students in the performing and visual arts, and which also develops arts faculty through paid leave.
“At this stage of my career, after the push-push-push, writewrite-write, I can take a moment and realize how privileged I am to be able to have this life in music. And I find myself wanting to give back to young performers,” Heggie said Monday afternoon at the institute’s headquarters, UNT on the Square. Opera students and a doctoral candidate in piano performance gathered to work scenes and tape a rehearsal for a public radio feature on Heggie, his work and his fellowship at UNT. “When I sit back and listen to young performers, I hear so much passion and it’s exciting to watch them discover what’s in the music, and what’s inside of them,” Heggie said. “I just really love it. And I have to say, I’ve
been blown away by the students at UNT. Blown away. These are students who perform at a pretty high technical level. I’m also pretty blown away by the composition students. It’s a testament to the program and the faculty that they can ask any question. Their questions are really good ones, too.” Heggie is most known for his pioneering work in opera. It was his pen that created one of the most produced new operas, Dead Man Walking. He’s also known for his new operas, The Three Decembers and The End of the Affair. Heggie’s recent work, the nationally-acclaimed MobyDick, was premiered by the Dallas Opera during its last See HEGGIE on 10
At some point, you have to let go of all that fear. You have to know that the audience had to make a lot of things happen so they could be there, and they want you to succeed. season. His fellowship is more than a training ground with the voices he’s likely to meet again in the professional music scene. He’s also using the six-week fellowship to write his first symphony. “I might be a little crazy for that, but it’s what’s happening for me musically at the moment,” he said. Opera has surprised the American performing arts world by outselling theater and musical theater performances, Heggie said, explaining how the appetite for opera has grown because producers and composers have made it more and more entertaining. They’ve also piped performances from the Metropolitan Opera into neighborhood cinemas in highdefinition — eliminating the headaches of traffic and parking garages, not to mention the high-dollar dress associated with opera galas. “There is a strong theatrical element,” Heggie said of opera. “Now with the surtitles [supertitles], people aren’t afraid of not understanding the story. Opera companies have been really smart about the way they’d done the shows.” As a composer, Heggie said he still finds that time stops during an opera because the music accompanies the theater so well. “Like in Madama Butterfly,” he said. “From the moment the show starts, you know exactly what’s going to happen. But you still get so pulled into the story, through the end. You want to know what’s going to happen.” As a teacher, Heggie said his aim is to coach students to let go of their anxieties about technique, diction and the demands of the music and just sing the story. “At some point, you have to let go of all that fear. You have to know that the audience had to make a lot of things happen so they could be there, and they want you to succeed. You have to let go of all of that and just sing. Breathe, and sing,” Heggie said. During a coaching session, Heggie stopped master’s student and soprano Jennifer Youngs and UNT senior and baritone Logan Walsh during a shattering

duet from The Three Decembers. He asked them to stop singing and just say the lines. Heggie said he was pushing the music aside so the students could hear the conversation within the poetry. When doctoral piano student Chao Ha Lin started the music again, Youngs and Walsh sang with more dramatic nuance, and a lot more intimacy. “Composers are pretty deliberate, but Jake is open to all questions. All of them,” Walsh said. “The one thing that Jake Heggie says is that everything goes back to the text. Everything goes back to the words. We work so hard on the music, you know? Our heads are always so into the music side of it that sometimes, you stop seeing the words as words. You see them as a rhythm, a note or a part where you’re supposed to back off and sing softer. But Jake has really asked us to look at the words and to never forget about them. “That’s where the story happens, in the words.” Kylie Toomer, a master’s student and soprano, agreed. “That’s what’s been so refreshing to me, watching him work with students. We spend so much time in this program working on technique. Your voice is supposed to do this or that, and you have to pronounce every syllable of whatever language you’re singing just so. But with Jake, he kind of tells you to just let go. Just do it from your heart,” Toomer said. Youngs said Heggie’s work makes it easier to sing from the singer’s personal point of view. “The relationships are really important in his work,” Lin added. “I was playing one of his pieces the other day and was

SATURDAY, FEB. 26 8 p.m. — Concert featuring Heggie’s song cycle The Deepest Desire in Voertman Hall at the Music Building. Performers: Heggie, piano; UNT professor Gustavo Romero, piano; James C. listening to the singers. I was thinking, ‘That’s exactly like a conversation I had with my mother the other day.’” Lin said Heggie’s compositions are complex — the composer can write phrases of music that are atonal and shift effortlessly into the kind of pretty melodies that make an aria memorable and wrenching, along the lines of “Un bel di, vedremo” from Madama Butterfly. “You have to practice Jake’s compositions. And you have to practice them a lot,” Lin said. “I remember looking at the page and being amazed by all these notes.” Heggie said up-and-coming singers are offering themselves to a profession heavy on criticism and short on forgiveness. “It’s a brutal profession, just brutal. When you’re a singer, you have to be able to learn music
incredibly fast, sing it perfectly, act and you have to do all the other stuff that goes with it. You have to travel, you have to show up, you have to be there and keep healthy. It’s brutal,” Heggie said. “But it’s also one of the most amazing things you can do.” Heggie said composing is a matter of work, analysis and inspiration for him. Teaching, though, is an obligation he feels dedicated to. “They are it. They are the future. Everything that people hear, everything they experience in a concert hall will be because of what these students do and everything they did to prepare,” he said. “Now I just hope I can contribute something meaningful. I hope I can give them music that is worthwhile.” LUCINDA BREEDING can be reached at 940-5666877. Her e-mail address is cbreeding@dentonrc.com.

NOW PLAYING The Dilemma (##1/2) Oscar-winning director Ron Howard takes a detour from big-budget epics with this modest relationship comedy about Ronny (Vince Vaughn), whose best friend (Kevin James) can’t make a commitment to his girlfriend (Winona Ryder), who Ronny discovers is having an affair with a younger man. There are some laughs and agreeable performances (from a topnotch cast) even if the script is predictable and lacking a consistent tone. Everyone here has done better. I
Am Number Four delivers an entertaining pastiche of puppy love, science fiction loopiness and an over-produced Michael Bay-like special effects extravaganza.
OPENING FRIDAY
I Am Number Four Rated PG-13, 110 minutes. Opens Friday.
Director D.J. Caruso (Disturbia) assembles a relatively unknown but blandly handsome young cast (with Timothy Olyphant called in to baby-sit) for a laughable science fiction fantasy about an alien race sent to Earth, but tracked down by alien-enemies intent on destroying them. Or something like that. Only young characters could approach this seriously, so they also become the ones who must waltz through a list of routine, school-day movie cliches, such as the new kid beating up the gang of bullies who threaten either him or the requisite nerd. And, of course, two young starry-eyed romantics fall in love, quickly creating a romance that means no less than the fate of the universe. Using Jobie Hughes and James Frey’s source novel, I Am Number Four starts slow before building to its loud, chaotic showdown. But before its rollicking conclusion, director Caruso chronicles several otherworldly encounters to establish that the whimsically named John Smith (Alex Pettyfer) hails from beyond, the fourth of a band of warriors destined to combat the other invading marauders.
THEATERS
Disney
Alex Pettyfer plays a teen wrestling with a powerful gift in I Am Number Four. Defenders one, two and three have heard the chimes at midnight, so, to avoid detection, John and his guardian protector Henry (Olyphant) move to the remote Paradise, Ohio. But, once there, those pesky superpowers keep giving them away. From there, the film devolves into schoolyard silliness, as bonds form and love blossoms
with the popular local girl (Dianna Agron) before the bad guys circle for the final showdown. Act 3 delivers the film’s auditorium-rattling special effects, as various forces take sides and the fireworks begin. The two love-struck leads follow the script and somehow keep a straight face during their romps through various dangers
from heavily tattooed outerspace creatures, as well as computer-generated dragons and demons. Never to be taken seriously, I Am Number Four still delivers some mildly diverting entertainment. DR. BOO ALLEN is an award-winning film critic for the Denton Record-Chronicle.
Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son An FBI agent with a penchant for donning a hefty drag disguise as Big Momma takes his stepson with him undercover after the teenager witnesses a murder. With Martin Lawrence and Brandon T. Jackson. Rated PG-13, 107 minutes. — Los Angeles Times Brotherhood (##1/2) A fraternity initiation prank involving robbing convenience stores goes awry, setting off a chain of increasingly bad events back at the ol’ frat house. Tightly structured, rapidly paced film suffers from the inexplicably irrational behavior that propels the frantic plot. Well-executed film maximizes its obvious low budget. Rated R, 76 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — Boo Allen Cedar Rapids (##) Ed Helms plays a shy, meek insurance salesman in rural Wisconsin who travels to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, for a big convention. He has a goal but is sidetracked by several other high-flying conventioneers (John C. Reilly, Anne Heche, Isiah Whitlock Jr.). Adorned with a few laughs, the film drops many opportunities for greater laughs, going broad whenever possible and avoiding any deep satire. Disappointing. Rated R, 86 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — B.A. Lovers of Hate (###) Slight but amusing low-budget mix of comedy and romantic thriller about a love triangle involving two brothers — one a successful children’s author and the other a failed writer — and their mutual love for the latter’s ex-wife, centering around a weekend at a mountain retreat that goes awry. There are moments of humor and discomfort as the trio’s behavior turns more erratic, but director Brian Poyser and his actors maintain a modestly compelling balance between the two. Not rated, 93 minutes. At the Texas Theatre. — Todd Jorgenson Unknown A doctor awakens after a car accident only to discover that his wife doesn’t recognize him and another man has assumed his identity. With Liam Neeson, Diane Kruger, January Jones, Aidan Quinn, Bruno Ganz and Frank Langella. Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra (Orphan, House of Wax). Rated PG-13, 93 minutes. — LAT
