hree high school students will be featured during the Lewisville Lake Symphony concert “Stars of the Future” on Friday night. The three young men were the grand prize winners of the Vernell Gregg Young Artists’ Competition, which is open to grades sixth through 12th and not limited geographically, said Adron Ming, conductor of the symphony. Two of the winners, Aaron Kurz, a 14-year-old pianist, and Russell Houston, a 15-year-old cellist, attend Greenhill School in Addison. The other winner, Dong-Yeon Kim, is a 15-yearold pianist attending Jasper High School in Plano. Ming, who helped judge the competition, said students are picked based on the whole package — “the way they sound musically, their stage presence,

how they would sound with an orchestra.” The three chosen seemed to pull all those elements together in the moment of their audition, he said. Ian Cleghorn, marketing director for the symphony, said judges saw a lot of talent this year, making the decision espe-

cially tough. “There’s just a lot of young talent” in North Texas, Cleghorn said. He said the competition offers the youths an opportunity to play with a professional orchestra along with a $1,200 prize, which is split among the winners.

TWU drama blends poetry, conflict

T

exas Woman’s University actors and theater technicians hit the ground running in December. The students and faculty had three weeks to read the script for The Half Moon Couple, rehearse the brand new work and perform the world premiere at the Smock Alley Theatre in Dublin, Ireland. The company performs the United States premiere today in the Redbud Theatre Complex, located across Administration Drive from the TWU Student Union. The Half Moon Couple was

written by Irish playwright Martin Maguire and directed by Patrick Sutton, the director of the Gaiety School of Acting in Dublin. The play opens with several families celebrating the Day of the Dead. Conflict arises as the families interact and secrets come to the surface. Performances are 4 p.m. today, 8 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Saturday, and 2 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $5 for students and $10 for adults. For more information, visit www.twu.edu/drama or call the TWU Box Office at 940-8982020.

T

he battle of Beowulf vs. the dragon comes to life in Beowulf Is Min Nama..., performed by Jeff Kaplan at 8 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday at Hydrant Cafe, 208 W. Oak St. in Denton. In his one-man show, Kaplan will enact the dragon tale from the epic poem Beowulf, through narration and post-modern dance. Kaplan will tell the heroic tale in Old English, also called Anglo-Saxon, spoken in England between the fifth and 11th centuries. Although Old English is now considered a foreign language, modern ears may find it sounds strangely familiar; nonetheless, supertitles will be provided. Tickets are $12 for general admission and $7 for students and seniors. Tickets are available at the door. Audience members can purchase an old-worldstyle dinner (beef stew, homemade cider or alternative beverage and bread) for $10 at 7:30 p.m. or orders can be placed ahead of time by calling Hydrant Cafe at 940-3840033. — Ellen Sackett Courtesy photo/Donna French

Jaffe’s gig list: First Norah, then NX35

Latest news: Sarah Jaffe, Denton’s smoky-voiced songstress, has been committed to North by 35 Music Conferette for a while, thank God. But news broke from her publicists at Stunt Co. that the rising star will be opening for Norah Jones next month, in addition to being part of the inimitable Denton flavor celebrated by the fest. (We also share her love of Edith Piaff, thanks.) Actually, the official press release was pre-empted by a timely tweet from the crew at NX35. Who we’re excited about: Steve Albini, musician and audio engineer, will do the daytime detail during the festival as keynote speaker. Albini is also legit as a music journalist, and has produced some of the most spectacularly cranky essays directed at corporate recording companies and their ways, which he frames as ever-so-bloodsucking. But he can spout off all he wants, because we love his work with the early Pixies albums, which sound both immediate and timeless at the same time. Stay tuned for the time and date of his address. Rumblings and mumblings: Is the Saturday night concert changing locations? Is

OPENING FRIDAY

Blood Done Sign My Name (##) Well-intentioned, but cliched, civilrights drama based on true events. A series of injustices gave rise to racial equality in North Carolina in 1970, specifically telling the story of young Ben Chavis (Nate Parker), a schoolteacher who went on to become a prominent NAACP leader and organizer of the Million Man March. His story has to be more worthwhile than this heavy-handed and watered-down script portrays. Rated PG-13, 128 minutes. — Todd Jorgenson Happy Tears (#1/2) Uneven and mostly unpleasant saga stars Parker Posey and Demi Moore as bickering sisters forced to reunite over the care of their father (Rip Torn), who is suffering from dementia while a golddigging nurse (Ellen Barkin) “cares” for him. The story shifts between its darker elements and the more playful fantasy lives of the two women, with little regard for coherence or emotional resonance. The tears you cry won't be happy ones. Rated R, 95 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — T.J. Saint John of Las Vegas (##) In this slight, shaggy dog story, two insurance investigators (Steve Buscemi and Romany Malco) travel from Albuquerque to Las Vegas to examine whether a stripper (Emmanuelle Chriqui) involved in a car wreck actually suffered injuries and whether her car was demolished. Various contrived, faintly humorous, events play out. With Sarah Silverman, Peter Dinklage, Tim Blake Nelson. Hue Rhodes wrote and directed, with a story credit going to Dante. Go figure. Rated R, 85 minutes. At the Magnolia. — Boo Allen The White Ribbon (####) The latest examination of evil from director Michael Haneke (Funny Games) is a black-and-white mystery set in a small German village near the onset of World War I, where a series of strange tragedies cause the citizens to search for motives and perpetrators. Subtle, incendiary and even shocking, the Oscar-nominated film is deliberately paced but builds suspense under the surface and makes viewers draw their own conclusions. Rated R, 144 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — T.J.

Mark Ruffalo, left, and Leonardo DiCaprio co-star in the thriller Shutter Island, Martin Scorsese’s creepy adaptation of Dennis Lehane’s novel.

Shudder island Scorsese gets flesh crawling in new thriller Wiseguys and goodfellas give way to hallucinations, nightmares and evil doctors in Shutter Island, Martin Scorsese’s creepy new mystery. Based on a novel by Dennis Lehane (Mystic River), with a screenplay from Laeta Kalogridis, this multisided thriller plays its secrets so cleverly that a viewer could easily get lost in its complex misdirection. Even when it becomes apparent that not all is what it seems, several other surprises lie ahead. Leonardo DiCaprio plays U.S. Marshall Teddy Daniels, en route to isolated Shutter Island in Boston Harbor in 1954. He

and his new partner Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo) visit a facility for the criminally and violently insane to investigate the disappearance of one of the incarcerated. The pair of doctors in charge (Ben Kingsley and Max von Sydow) all but scream that they are hiding something. Once on the island, Daniels and Aule keep stumbling over tiny bits of information that lead them to believe something more mysterious than simple patient care is going on, possibly medical experiments that conjure up horrific World War II death camp memories from

ex-G.I. Daniels. From these shreds, Scorsese weaves in a well-textured translation of Daniels’ tortured psyche, one that suffers from his military past as well as the loss of his wife (Michelle Williams, in flashbacks) in a horrid fire. The perceived horrors of Shutter Island combine with the inner recesses of Daniel’s repressed memories to render a dark tableau made even more ominous by Robert Richardson’s excellent, evocative cinematography. The totality of evil grows exponentially with nature’s wrath, as a hurricane bears down on the island, changing its landscape and its structured sense of order. But that sense of order is never what it seemed anyway. DR. BOO ALLEN is an award-winning film critic for the Denton Record-Chronicle.

long-gestating computer-generated science-fiction saga boasts impressive special effects and some striking creatures. A U.S. military team travels to the distant moon Pandora to extract a valuable mineral. But once there, they must disrupt the peaceful

indigenous people. The skies and mountains of Pandora set the scene for the ultimate battle sequences and for Cameron’s technical crews to render a succession of detailed, highly impressive marvels. Rated PG-13, 162 minutes. — B.A.

ren landscape ravaged by war, determined to fulfill a mission that involves a treasured book. There are some interesting concepts here, but as the film reveals its secrets about the hero’s identity and motives, you realize the script takes itself too seriously, and isn’t clever enough to match. Also stars Gary Oldman and Mila Kunis. Rated R, 117 minutes. — T.J. Crazy Heart (###) Jeff Bridges offers a stunning performance in an otherwise contrived character study about the redemption of a washedup country music star addicted to booze and women, and who finds himself alone and bankrupt — both financially and creatively. Things improve when he meets a journalist (Maggie Gyllenhaal) with a young son, but his vices get in the way. While the story takes a familiar arc, Bridges and a cool soundtrack make it worthwhile. Rated R, 111 minutes. — T.J. Dear John (##) Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried star in this adaptation of Nicholas Sparks’ sappy novel about two young lovers who meet briefly and fall in love before he goes off to war. Time and circumstance prevent their reunion, while director Lasse Hallstrom manipulates all circumstances to render a tearstained melodrama. Rated PG-13, 105 minutes. — B.A. From Paris With Love (##1/2) Luc Besson supplies the story and Pierre Morel (Taken) directs in a story about James Reese (Jonathan Rhys Meyers), a seemingly mild assistant to the U.S. ambassador to France. Reese is assigned a partner (John Travolta), and together, they must break up a drug-dealing gang of terrorists. Nonstop violent action that becomes cartoonish when not overly graphic. Rated R, 92 minutes. — B.A. Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief (##1/2) Chris Columbus directs this heavily effects-laden movie based on Rick Riordan’s young adult novel about young Percy Jackson (Logan Lerman), who learns of his demi-god status as son of a Greek god and mortal mother. He must travel with his two friends (Brandon T. Jackson and Alexandra Daddario) to the underworld to rescue his mother, while Zeus, Hades, and his father, Poseidon, battle over some lightning bolt. Or something. Decently entertaining if not particularly substantial. Rated PG, 119 minutes. — B.A. Valentine’s Day (##) A big-name cast stars in director Garry Marshall’s sappy romantic comedy about entangled relationships on Valentine’s Day in Los Angeles. Various romances and nearromances play out as Marshall doles out his familiar broad comedy. With Taylor Swift, Ashton Kutcher, Jennifer Garner, Jessica Alba, Shirley MacLaine and many others. Rated PG-13, 124 minutes. — B.A. The Wolfman Benicio Del Toro is a man who finds the curse of the werewolf haunting his family when he returns to his ancestral home. With Emily Blunt, Anthony Hopkins and Hugo Weaving. — AP

Without cracking a smile, he adds, “It’s too cold for that this time of year.” Noon Mills laughs. Today Monique has on Mardi Gras beads, “for the Saints,” Noon Mills explains, referring to New Orleans’ recent Super Bowl win. orange below and the purple tablecloths. His presence foreshadows what customers can expect to find at Siam Off the Square — it’s “full of happy energy,” Noon Mills said. Finding the restaurant isn’t easy if you don’t know where to look. Its physical address is Hickory Street, but it’s actually on the corner of Cedar and Walnut streets. The space was once part of Russell’s Department Store and has been home to several restaurants, including the original Hannah’s Off the Square, hence the similar name. While Hannah’s expanded when it moved to Mulberry Street, Siam Off the Square downsized from its 17-year home in Carriage Square. “We love our new location,” Noon Mills said. “The Square

is a community within a community.” Russel Mills said businesses on the Square have supported them. “We brought our clientele with us, which in turn supports other businesses on the Square,” he said. Customers will find the same quality food at the new location as they did the old. The menu includes a variety of appetizers, curries, stir-fry dishes and pad thai. Noon Mills’ mother, from Phuket Island in southern Thailand, provides the curry paste. She is an important influence on her daughter’s cooking, as is Noon Mill’s Chinese heritage. “Not all dishes are spicy,” she said, “but you can expect them to be tasty.” The menu changes with the seasons. The Millses buy

ombine murder with mystery, throw in some humor and a little romance, top it off with a dollop of ice cream, and what have you got? A recipe for a chick-lit mystery by Denton resident Wendy Lyn Watson, I Scream, You Scream, published by a Penguin Books division last October. The story stars Tallulah “Tally” Jones, who struggles as the owner of Remember the Al-a-Mode, an ice cream parlor in Dalliance, Texas, also known as “Little D.” Her business depends on the good graces of her two-timing ex-husband, Wayne, and his bodacious young girlfriend, Brittanie, who hire Tally to scoop up sundaes at his company luau. Just in time for the party, Tally’s former flame, Finn, moves back to town. Temptation is sweet, tensions are high, and before the evening ends, Brittanie accuses Wayne of cheating on her — with Tally! But the real surprise comes the next morning when Tally finds out

Brittanie is dead, and she’s being accused of murder. A University of North Texas professor of American politics by day, Wendy Lyn Watson knew she wanted to be a professional writer since she was 10 years old. The release of I Scream, You Scream realizes her dream, with the first novel in her Mystery a la Mode series. Watson’s quick-witted writing style keeps the pages turning. The dialogue is thick with Texas twang and the plot twists and turns with smalltown drama, but it’s the genuine characters that hold the story — and Tally — together. Watson’s book comes with a bonus in the back — two recipes, so you too can make Tally’s Tropical Sundaes with her Tropical Coconut Dessert Sauce. If that leaves you wanting more, you’re in luck. Watson’s next book in the Mystery a la Mode series, Scoop to Kill, will hit bookstores in September. To find out more, visit www. wendylynwatson.com.

Ramirez Hasta la Vista, Lola! hit the shelves on Feb. 2, almost a year after Ramirez’s first novel from the Lola series, Living the Vida Lola, which took her six years to write — in between changing diapers, doing laundry and mothering five children, four of whom are boys. Ramirez wanted to create a role model through her books for her daughter, who is in reallife a blend of two cultures, just like Lola. “When I came up with the idea for this character, she came to me as this strong, independent woman,” Ramirez

said, with a foothold in both the traditions of her Mexican heritage and the modern American lifestyle. “Whenever I think about writing new books, I bring that into the characters.” The Lola Cruz mysteries series is published by an imprint of St. Martin’s Press/ Thomas Dunne Books. Ramirez’s third book, Bare Naked Lola, is in the works, although its release date is not yet known. For updates and more information, visit the author’s Web site at www.misa ramirez.com.

A TASTE OF ‘LOLA’ An excerpt from Hasta la Vista, Lola! by Misa Ramirez (Minotaur, 2010), from the start of Chapter 1:

I

can’t even begin to count the number of times my grandmother told me that she would die a happy woman if only I’d join the Order of the Benedictine Sisters of Guadalupe and live a chaste and holy life. To which I always nodded, smiled, and said, “I want you to die happy, Abuela, pero I’m not going to become a nun.” There were several problems with me and a pious life. If you asked my mother, she’d say I’d sinned over and over

There were several problems with me and a pious life. and over again, beginning with premarital intercourse (which she suspected but had no actual proof of), and ending with my job. In my mother’s eyes, being a detective necessitates questionable

actions and an “ends justifies the means” philosophy. Which is not actually my philosophy. I do things by the book, and let my conscience be my guide. I was God-fearing so I tried to toe the line, but I was also a driven, independent woman walking a tightrope between modern American culture and my parents’ old-fashioned maleoriented Spanish culture so my conscience didn’t always know which way to go when I hit a fork in the road.

An excerpt from I Scream, You Scream by Wendy Lyn Watson (Obsidian, 2009), from Chapter 4:

ord spread faster than an Oklahoma twister. I got the news from Karla Faye Hoffstead, who had done my hair since I got my first perm in the ninth grade. … “Lord a-mercy, Tally. Have you heard the news?” “What news?” I asked as I pulled off my hat. “About that little—” Karla Faye gasped. “Bless your heart, what happened to your head?” “Bree happened to my head,” I moaned. Karla Faye clucked softly. “How many times have I told you? Surgery, dentistry, and permanent hair color … the three things in this life you need a professional for.” “I know. And I’m sorry. But I was in a bad place emotionally, and it seemed like a good idea at the time. Can you fix it?” “Baby girl, I can fix anything.” She led me to her [hair] station and shook out a leopard-print cape while I settled in the chair. “So, what’s got you all atwitter?” I asked as Karla Faye joined the Velcro tabs of the cape around my neck. The rest of the stylists were still whispering by the shampoo sink, and I caught several of them casting side-

ways glances in our direction. “Oh!” Karla Faye threw up her hands in alarm. “I can’t believe I got sidetracked. But, honestly, pink stripes?” “Karla Faye.” “Right. Are you ready for this?” She rested her hands on my shoulders, as though she was steadying me for a blow. “That little hussy who’s been playing house with your Wayne?” I didn’t bother to point out that he definitely wasn’t my Wayne anymore. “Brittanie? What about her?” Karla Fay leaned in so close that her breath, sharp with the scent of menthol cigarettes, stirred the delicate hairs at my temple when she whispered. “She’s dead.”
