Finger-licking good omposer Stephen Sondheim has never shied away from the shadows, and Sweeney Todd is no exception. University of North Texas Opera Theatre is staging Sondheim’s popular Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. The musical is about Sweeney Todd, who returns to London after having been exiled by a corrupt judge only to discover his wife killed herself and his daughter, Johanna, is being reared by the judge. Life is hardscrabble for the London underclass, but some, like Sweeney Todd, are resourceful. Todd returns to his job as a barber, and when he meets a meat pie maker, the two devise a revolting revenge. The musical is under the direction of Paula Homer, Margot and Bill Winspear Chair in Opera Studies. The UNT Concert Orchestra will be conducted by Stephen Dubberly, who will give lectures for ticketholders 45

Gospel, jazz share roots in human feeling

Saxophone player and University of North Texas music professor Brad Leali says jazz and gospel music are knitted into his DNA. Both inform the way he plays. “This is how I was raised,” Leali said. “I was raised with gospel music and with jazz. It had always been a dream of mine to show these different factions of music that really inspired me to play the way I do.” Gospel and jazz are American folk music driven by the same thing: human emotion. “Gospel music comes from emotion. It’s basically giving praise to God. Some of the basic harmonies of gospel music are the foundation of jazz,” Leali said. “Sure, jazz is a bit more harmonically challenging. OK. But that’s what I’m trying to connect here. Gospel and jazz have these different qualities. Jazz isn’t as straightforward as gospel, but it should be just as emotional. “It’s easy sometimes in jazz to think of the harmonic aspect of jazz as being more challenging, and the raw emotion does

get lost sometimes. But both their roots are emotion. And it’s important for me to show that.” Sunday’s “Gospel Meets Jazz” concert is the second Leali has put together in Denton. He staged his first “Gospel Meets Jazz” in 2007 in Lubbock. The idea debuted in Denton last year with success — a concert hall packed tight with all ages, from all interests. Leali said he enjoyed the diversity among the audience members and onstage. “There were people there from the church, from the school side of things. We played John Coltrane, and we played Kirk Franklin. We had a lot of stuff going on and it was so cool,” Leali said. Leali said last year’s program was “straight-ahead jazz,

just swinging,” and gospel music. On Sunday, during a free concert, Leali will showcase what he calls a “funkier side of jazz, like stuff from the 1970s.” A Lubbock gospel choir will perform, and the Rev. Cory Powell will speak again about gospel music and its role in propelling worship and expressing raw emotion. Leali expects that some of the gospel fans who attend are probably not church members, or Christian. He notes the universal appeal of gospel music as a sign of its power as an artform. “It’s pure,” he said. “It’s just pure. In gospel music, people aren’t pretending. I think most people can relate to goodness, to love, right? And I think that’s the basis of gospel music: Thank you, Lord. Thank you. “It doesn’t matter what reli-

he Denton Bach Society often makes you think of serious music, early music by Bach and his contemporaries. Soloists with the Bach choir perform challenging arias, and the choir joins in with equally challenging choruses. But fun is hardly foreign to the society. The group has staged many an Oktoberfestthemed party, and even presented Bach’s “Coffee Cantata” at a downtown coffeehouse. And on Saturday at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, the Denton Bach Society will chalk another hatch in the fun column with Il Festino nella sera del giovedi grasso avanti cena (“Fete for the Evening of Fat Thursday Before Supper”), a feast of delectable pre-Lenten Italian fare and a performance from Festino. “This is the sort of thing that used to be done in Italy — it might still be done — right before Lent,” said Henry Gibbons, the director of the choir. “In its day, this sort of thing would have been done in a large hall, in the home of a wealthy person. But it was of a broader, more popular nature. It wasn’t something for the aristocracy.”

Performed by devotees of baroque music? Absolutely, said choir member and soloist Heidi Klein. Bach (and many of his contemporaries) were show people, in a sense, and there is a time and place for lowbrow humor. “There are a few pieces — some ‘fa-las,’ as we call them,

and ‘din-dins’ — where the singers make the sounds of musical instruments,” Klein said. In addition to Banchieri’s music, Saturday’s event will feature the homemade delights of Italian-born Denton resident Rossana Iodici Cacal. Cacal is making traditional carnevale foods from several regions of Italy. “We celebrate our holidays in food,” Cacal said. “Every region has their own dishes and families cook for days.” A glimpse of the menu

promises belt-straining fare. Patrons can sample tastings of foods — all of them rich, whether savory or sweet — and sip wine before Festino begins. Tasting plate prices start at $5 for three items. Action confection Kevin Costner fills ‘3 Days’ with both levity, heft By Roger Moore McClatchy-Tribune News Service

Kevin Costner and director McG are plunged into the madcap mayhem of Monsieur Luc Besson in 3 Days to Kill, a serio-comic thriller about mortality, murder for hire and fatherhood. This being a Besson script and production, it’s also about car chases and epic shootouts, torture played for sadistic laughs, Paris locations and Peugeot product placement. Besson, who morphed into a producer after The Professional and before The Transporter, gives Costner the full Liam Neeson in Taken treatment, cashing in on a career of cool in a movie that moves almost fast enough to keep us from noticing how scruffy, discomfiting and absurdly over-the-top the whole thing is. Costner is Ethan, a veteran CIA agent diagnosed with can-

cer. But his new control agent, a vamp named ViVi and played to the stiletto-heeled hilt by Amber Heard, wants him to finish one last massacre — taking out a nuclear arms dealer and his associates in the City of Light. The carrot? She has an experimental drug that might give Ethan longer to live. And that could mean more time with his estranged wife (Connie Nielsen) and the daughter he barely knows, played by True Grit teen Hailee Steinfeld. They live in Paris. The girl doesn’t know what Dad does for a living, or that he’s dying. She’s a teen. She probably wouldn’t care. McG (Charlie’s Angels, We Are Marshall) stamps his signature on Besson’s Euro-action vision with running gags. “Dad” keeps trying to get his rebellious teen to ride this cool purple bike he brought her. Her ringtone on his phone is “I Love It (I Don’t Care),” which always goes off

just as he’s about the rip a guy’s armpit hair off with duct tape. Everybody’s always trying to high-five Ethan, and the French, Germans and others he runs into keep calling him “Cowboy.” Ethan’s clueless about how to deal with a teen, so he’s always stopping the torture to ask one underworld guy (Marc Andreoni, funny) how to cope, what to do, how “to balance work and family.” Heard — all lipstick and lingerie, long eyelashes and leatherwear — has little to do here, something of a waste. Steinfeld’s Zoey is a bit of a drama queen, but not a caricature of one. She is one transgression after another, which Ethan seems loathe to punish and unable to reign in. Besson co-wrote the script, and he works in shots at absentee parents, lazy French cops and a legal system that allows cute African squatters more

rights to Ethan’s apartment than he has. But that turns out to be a warm and fuzzy cul de sac, one of many in this movie, which veers from shocking shootouts to rank sentiment. Ethan’s illness is forgotten for long stretches, but Costner, a hacking, weathered study in wrinkles and violence, never lets on that the whole affair is more of a lark than Taken ever was. A canny touch is the old-fashioned split-screen opening credits, scored to the old R&B tune “Old Man Trouble.” It fits. Daft and sloppy as it is, 3 Days rarely fails to entertain. From the bike-riding lessons on Montmartre to dopey interrogation of the Italian “Accountant,” interrupted for a marinara sauce recipe, it’s all part and parcel of the madness of Besson, From Paris, With Love — filtered through McG and slapping a new stamp of “cool” on aging Oscar winner Costner.

fter she clicked on the “submit” button for “Materials: Hard & Soft,” University of North Texas graduate student and artist Abby Sherrill said she went on about her schoolwork. She didn’t expect her piece, Spoon Collection, to be selected to the wellknown contemporary American Craft competition and exhibition in Denton. Sherrill also said she didn’t expect to win a juror’s award. It turns out that Spoon Collection, a mixed-media installation made up of handcrafted spoons, charmed juror Judy Gordon and earned an award. “Each of these objects is impeccably made,” Gordon said weeks ago, when she came to Denton to select award winners. “They’re curious, aren’t they? The material the artist has used is ordinary, but the detail is really magnificent. This is something

Spoons award-winning installation. Sherrill used found objects, paper and cardboard, and bits of wire to approximate spoons arranged in a rectangle of similar objects, all of them measuring about 8 inches. They all look humble, simple. But each object is lovingly made and technically precise. “It came from an interest in collections, and how collections can create meaning beyond the object,” Sherrill said. “The materials I used was, I think, more of an investigation of meaning in what would be trash around my studio.” Using paper, cardboard and the like was intentional for Sherrill. “One of the biggest challenges was finding different materials and using found objects, and the materials I used and the found objects changed the foundation of the collection in a way I’m OK with,” she said. As she studied spoons and collections, Sherrill realized that she was indeed working in the craft form — rendering a functional object decorative. “I was working intuitively, asking questions like ‘How would someone hold this, and what would it hold?’ I was thinking about just the shape,” she said. Ultimately, it was the softness of the paper and cardboard in the form of something typically hard — flatware — and Sherrill’s careful construction that sold Judy Gordon on the piece. Yes, she was looking at a spoon collection. Each of the objects suggested an intimacy and meaning. “It plays with those ideas in a way that’s clever and fun,” Gordon said. Sherrill said paper and cardboard have a sort of dual identity. “Yes, it’s a worthless material that used to have a function, but it also has aesthetics,” Sherrill said. “I think the material can easily be shaped into something else. And then there’s the preciousness of the handmade. Really, I could spend three hours working on something made out of cardboard, something impressive, but it’s still cardboard.”

She labored over the pieces that make up Spoon Collection in varying intensity. Some were made in a matter of minutes, crafted almost automatically. Others needed more planning and attention. The point of the piece was to make objects that could actually perform a function, thanks to technical execution. But the goal? That was to suggest the meaningful objects in our lives or the lives of others — whether the rectangular shape evokes posters, stamps or boxes, or
