Southern home Corey Smith sticks to writing, living what he knows By Lucinda Breeding Features Editor
W
hen the time came to make Broken Record, bluesy rootscountry artist Cory Smith realized he wasn’t the same artist he’d been when cutting his first album, 2003’s Undertones. Six albums later, Smith said he’s writing differently and playing differently. “Well, there’s two levels of an effective song,” Smith said. “I’m happy with a song if it does what I want to do. But just because I like it doesn’t mean it’s going to be a major song live. There’s a song, ‘Arc of a Rainbow’ from Keeping Up with the Joneses — I felt like that song was really important to me, many different layers of meaning in the lyrics and a lot of music. Will it ever be a major song? I don’t think so.” Corey Smith plays Rockin’ Rodeo on Friday night. Smith’s seventh record, Broken Record, is slated for a June release. The title is apt, given that half of the record has roots in his first forays into pro music and the other is settled into a comfortable present for the singer. “The album is really two different records,” he said. “Getting these two pieces to fit together in a meaningful way was the challenge. The recent ones are more metaphorical, there’s more beneath the surface. I hope I accomplished that — I hope it feels like that for the people listening.” Smith’s music is mostly rock, but he can’t get away from the blues and country influences that formed the culture around Jefferson, Ga., where he grew up and where he lives. Every once in a while, a touch of the Celtic comes through, in the lilt of his tenor here or a key

Corey Smith has been in the music game for nearly 10 years. He’s released six country-rock albums in that time, with Broken Record to release in June. The Georgia musician plays Rockin’ Rodeo on Friday night.

change there that hints at some sadness behind the hope. As an artist, Smith said he feels like his job is to observe the world and then reflect on it through his own eyes. “I consider myself more socially and culturally conscious than most people, but I have to write from where I am. I still live in the same community I grew up in. My personal experiences consist mostly of rural Georgia. So, yeah, when I write, I’m very much influenced by the things I saw and the people I know from rural or visit www.music.unt.edu.

Georgia,” he said. What hasn’t changed is Smith’s stubborn streak about how he makes music. “I’m very happy that after seven albums, I still own — legally and artistically — every word and every note on those albums,” Smith said. “There’s nothing on that record that I didn’t choose to be on the record. It’s my goal to say that. A lot of bands can’t say that — a lot of people advocate cowriting, and I don’t want to dismiss that, I think that you can learn a lot from that process. “But I believe that that my albums are sound pictures. I don’t want to paint someone else’s pictures. I don’t want to do a paint-by-the-numbers painting.” Time at Emily Fowler Central Library, 502 Oakland St. Free. ike a lot of rock in your pop? Andrew Tinker, a Denton pianorock man, has started a regular gig at Dan’s Silverleaf. Whether he’s on the piano bench or playing guitar, Tinker is sharing the stage with his musical friends. Tinker’s next date at Dan’s is Tuesday. Tinker romps all over the American pop-rock map. entlemen, don your kilts, and ladies, take out those tartans. The Celtics are coming, the Celtics are coming! And they’ll be taking over the Abbey Inn at midday Saturday for the Denton Celtic Festival, with storytelling, music, dancing and, of course, plenty of Celtic drink. The festival will begin at 3 p.m. with storytellers Liz Covington and John Burleson, and music will be provided by Lara Bryant Campbell. At 6 p.m. the party will move downstairs to the Abbey Underground, starting with the band Tombstone Whisky. Other performers include Celtic folk singer-songwriter Jed Marum, who has released nine albums on Boston Road Records; George Neal, one of the originators of Hares on the Mountain, a project that draws on traditional English and Irish folk, as well as glam, punk, psychedelic noise and country music; and Murder the Stout, a progressive Celtic rock band from Houston. The evening will end with local acoustic Celtic rock band the Jakeys. “This is my first time playing the festival,” said Marum, who’s based in Dallas. “I play events like it all over the U.S. and am glad to be playing close to home.” Proceeds from the event go toward the nonprofit Celtic Cultural Association of Texas, said Seamus Delmont, a mem-

Steven Young describes the Texas Woman’s University production of Oliver Goldsmith’s 18th-century Irish comedy, She Stoops to Conquer. The theater professor’s interpretation, as staged by TWU student thespians, offers a modern take on a period piece. “It takes place in the Georgian era. America had recently declared its independence, and money was at the forefront of relationships,” said Young. This was a time, he said, when “the thickness of your wallet dictates how deep your love is.” Young perceived a parallel between this period in history and that of the 1980s, when designer labels were all the rage, some people wore their clothes with the price tags still on and flaunting wealth became a fashion statement. “Often Georgian or Restoration plays deal with a lack of money or the burden of having too much,” Young said. The plays of those eras deal with love, sex and marriage, he said, but the heart of whether a marriage will be possible depends on money and class. A “striking” black-and-white Polo Ralph Lauren advertisement from the 1980s of a man in riding boots, jeans and a bolero shirt stuck with Young. This image, both contemporary and classical, became a “guiding force for the project,” he said. Young also cited ’80s pop icons for incorporating period costumes, such as Madonna’s French countess costume in the video “Vogue,” and Prince’s purple suit and ruffled poet’s shirt in “1999.” Theatergoers can expect to experience pop with the pomp. For example, Kate, the heroine who stoops to conquer by tricking her admirer into believing she is nothing more than a simple barmaid, makes her first entrance dressed in a magenta corset and hoop skirt, sporting a matching pink powdered wig under her enormous shepherdess See POMP on 10

hat. Her garb includes bright red sunglasses and sparkly, strappy high heels. The object of her affections, Charles Marlow, wears a long, shimmering coat with denim jeans and loafers and discusses fashion decisions with his friend and travel companion, saying, “The girls like finery, George.” British punk style is thrown into the mix — especially in the bar scene, where one wench accessorizes her dowdy dress and mop cap with a spiked dog collar, and the hoodlums wear leather jackets and black lipstick and sport tattoos. Rhonda Gorman, the show’s costume designer and a TWU professor, said she wanted to create a “cacophony” of color. “The more outrageous, the better,” she said. No one is costumed more outrageously than Kate’s mother, Mrs. Hardcastle, in keeping with her garish personality, decked out in bright orange and lime green. Gorman said in the late 18th century, it was common to elaborately decorate hairdos with toys and even birdcages with live birds, so she decided to nest a small boat in Mrs. Hardcastle’s pompadour. This adds to the hilarity near the end of the play, when the character’s carriage accidentally lands in a pond, and her ship sinks into the wig. The connection between Mrs. Hardcastle and her equally obnoxious son is not lost in Gorman’s choice to costume him in an orange coat and high-waisted breeches that match his mother’s. the costumes last December after several weeks of research and fabric selection. “Color has a sound. I listen to the sound that comes out of it,” Gorman said. She enjoys seeing the texture and hearing the rustle of the fabric. “That’s the magic!” she said. “Theater is a collaborative art form. It takes many, many people” to execute the director’s vision, Gorman said — including the costumer, the light designer, the sound designer, and in this case, even a puppet designer, TWU student Jennie Patton. The show includes stuffed and papier-mache pigs, ducks on wheels, hobby horses and mice on sticks. Young said these creations come from his six years in England, where he saw farm animals everywhere. This is Young’s “first crack” at directing this particular play, which is classical in nature and useful for teaching because it requires heightened language 3-D. Rated G, 84 minutes. — LAT I Am Number Four (##1/2) A handsome young cast heads this science fiction extravaganza directed by D.J. Caruso (Disturbia) about an alien (Alex Pettyfer) who’s come to Earth with his protector (Timothy Olyphant) in order to eventually combat his pursuing enemies. But first, love must blossom between two beautiful youngsters who face down the demons. Puppy love lumpily combines with loud, raucous special effects. The cast has been coached by master’s student Marc Games to speak with Cockney, upper-class British or Scottish accents. The layering of styles from the 1780s and 1980s is remarkably seamless. In effect, “[we] created our own period,” Gorman said. Other twists include baroque versions of pop tunes on harpsichord, such as “Girls Just Want to Have Fun,” the song made famous by Cyndi Lauper in the early 1980s, and apropos to the spirit of the show, the ensemble ends the production with a song and dance cover of Madonna’s “Material Girl.”

The question then becomes, which one will fall first? Rated R, 108 minutes. 127 Hours (###1/2) Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire) again shows his versatility with this harrowing true-life adventure tale about Aron Ralston (James Franco), a hiker who slipped in a narrow Utah canyon, becoming immobile when his arm was wedged between rocks. As his provisions run low and survival hopes turn slim, he becomes desperate. Franco is terrific, while Boyle manages to bring sus-

OPENING FRIDAY Drive Angry An escaped felon (Nicolas Cage) seeking revenge on the cult that murdered his daughter and kidnapped her baby teams with a no-nonsense waitress (Amber Heard) on a mission of her own. In 3D. Rated R, 104 minutes. — Los Angeles Times The Grace Card A police officer tormented by the loss of his son in an accident years earlier and his new partner, a part-time pastor, look past their differences and learn from each other. Rated PG-13. 101 minutes. — LAT Four Lions (###) In this controversial, politically incorrect, yet undeniably funny film, four Muslim men in England plot various terrorist acts. As they do, they display a remarkable incompetence along with a fluctuating passion for their missions. Stereotypes are smashed, and the frequent laughs guarantee discomfort. Rated R, 97 minutes. At the Texas Theatre. — Boo Allen The Housemaid (###) Bizarre but compelling Korean romantic thriller about a nanny hired in a mansion run by a businessman and his pregnant wife. After the husband seduces the newcomer, she is subject to the vengeance of her mother and a scheming housekeeper. It’s a beautifully shot remake of a 1960 film of the same name that skewers socialclass differences and provides some clever twists. It’s a shame the suspense starts to derail as the film becomes more absurd in the second half. Not rated, 107 minutes. At the Magnolia. — Todd Jorgenson Outside the Law (###1/2) Ambitious if overwrought, this Oscar-nominated political epic has topical relevance in its story of north African unrest during the battle for Algerian independence from France more than 50 years ago. Specifically, it follows three brothers who reunite after losing their family home to spearhead a grassroots war against Algerian oppression in Paris. The script from director Rachid Bouchareb (Days of Glory) feels familiar, but the ensemble cast adds emotional depth. Not rated, 138 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — T.J.

Just grow up already Farrelly brothers sink even lower with tired take on men-will-be-boys schlock By Christopher Kelly
Hall Pass
ver since their 1998 modern classic There’s Something About Mary, writer-directors Peter and Bobby Farrelly have struggled to try to recapture lightning in a bottle and conjure up yet another raunchy comedy with a heart of gold. They have come close a few times — 2003’s blissfully silly Stuck on You, starring Matt Damon and Greg Kinnear as the world’s most wide-eyed conjoined twins, remains widely underappreciated, and 2005’s Fever Pitch was an appealing, PG-13-rated change of pace for the filmmakers. Yet most of their post-Mary work reeks of a certain kind of Hollywood desperation: The
gags have become more deliberately “shocking,” even as the emotions feel increasingly manufactured. Their latest effort, Hall Pass, starring Owen Wilson and Jason Sudeikis as a pair of married suburban men yearning for the freedom of youth, falls right in line. Wilson plays Rick, sexually frustrated after nearly 20 years of marriage to Maggie (Jenna Fischer). He and his best friend, Fred (Sudeikis), similarly frustrated in his marriage to Grace (Christina Applegate), can’t quite believe their luck when their wives give them a hall pass — a week off from marriage to sleep with other women. The wives are inspired by a psychologist friend (Joy Behar, awkward and miscast), who insists this strategy will
save their relationships. What follows is yet another slapdash bromance in which overgrown children must learn to finally become men (see also: The Hangover, Wedding Crashers, I Love You, Man, and too many other titles of late to count). Except this one is especially slapdash, with more than a dozen characters dropping in and out of the proceedings at will, and illogical chaos erupting at every turn. (The climax involves a jealous barista/club DJ, played by Derek Waters, who smashes Fred’s minivan, and then chases the two men from Providence, R.I., to Cape
for donning a hefty drag disguise as Big Momma takes his stepson with him undercover after the teenager witnesses a murder. With Martin Lawrence and Brandon T. Jackson.
Rated PG-13, 107 minutes. — LAT The Company Men (###) Ben Affleck plays a high-living corporate type fired when he least expects it. As he copes with unemployment,
others from his firm follow (Tommy Lee Jones, Chris Cooper, et al.). Writer-director John Wells captures the pulse of the times, even if he focuses on upper-level executives.

Cod.) And while Sudeikis is a pleasant-enough second banana, Wilson remains a little too lackadaisical and glibly aboveit-all to play a convincing suburban schlump. The real disappointment is that the Farrelly brothers still have the capacity to push buttons and upend expectations; they serve up a side of subversion with their raunch. One soon-to-be-infamous sequence in Hall Pass features Rick being administered medical attention by a naked black man, who rescues him from the hot tub at his gym (use your imagination). The Farrellys gleefully exploit stereotypes about race and homosexuality in a manner that is at first brazenly funny until it turns painfully uncomfortable. Too bad the rest of Hall Pass is just lurching, strained and forgettable. With Kevin Costner and Maria Bello. Rated R, 109 minutes. — B.A. The Eagle (##1/2) Channing Tatum
