TABLE OF CONTENTS There is some great advice on Page 8 - not only for students, but parents and teachers as well. In this busy, busy time, we often rush from one thing to another with barely enough time to eat, sleep or just relax. And, according to the advice on Page 8, relaxation and rest are a very important part of staying healthy. Reading a book, watching the sunset or daydreaming are just as important to you and your family’s well being as meeting all of those assignments, practices, recitals and more. So, be sure to read that page and spend a little leisure time relaxing.

ATC students help create cookbook Healthy, easy-to-make recipes will be given to every fourth- and fifth-grade student Eating healthy and maintaining a lifestyle that is good for you are often some of the most popular New Year’s resolutions. The students at the LaGrone Advanced Technology Complex making it easier for families to stick to those goals. Students in Chef Paul Niles’ culinary arts class at the ATC have teamed up with Medical City Children’s Hospital in Dallas and the Greater Dallas Restaurant Association to create a cookbook filled with easy-to-make healthy snack recipes. The book “kids teaching kids” will feature treats that elementary students can make at home with items they commonly find in their pantry or refrigerator. Making the process even more student-oriented is that the book is also being created by students in the commercial photog-

raphy and graphic design classes at the ATC. These students will create the design and layout of the book as well as provide the artwork that elementary students will be using as how-to examples. “This is a win-win for all our students,” said Carla Ruge, dean of the ATC. “It gives our older students the opportunity to learn more about nutrition and how to prepare foods that are lower in fat and sugar, while our younger students get easy, nutritious snacks that they can put together on their own with stuff they have at home.” All recipes in the book have been created by ATC culinary arts students and approved by a nutritionist at Medical City. Each recipe meets stringent guidelines of containing a serving of fruit or vegetable as well as having no more than 200 calories, 15 grams of sugar, seven grams of fat and two grams of saturated fat per serving. After developing the recipes, the ATC students must create and present their finished snack for a panel of judges from Medical City and GDRA. Only the top 20 recipes that rate best in flavor, ease of preparation and commonality of ingredients will be chosen for the cookbook, with the completed “kids teaching kids” product given to every Denton ISD’s fourth- and fifth-grade student this spring.

Denton ISD Update Students get engaged with construction at new middle school A consistent message being heard across hallways and classrooms in all grade levels throughout the Denton ISD this year is engagement. The district wants students to connect to what they are learning and strive to learn more. Stephens Elementary fifthgrade students Mitchell Case, Haden Hoagland, Sierra Gaines and Nicole Scroeder got a firsthand taste of what this type of learning includes. By signing up to take part in the new Myers Middle School planning/construction team, they got a sneak peek at their new middle school and learned about the construction process from the people who know it best – the builders and architects. A partnership between Balfour Beatty Construction, VLK Architects and Denton ISD, the Myers “planning team” allows fifth-grade students who will feed into the school to participate in construction meetings, tour the school while it’s being built and offer their input. “It felt good to be the first students to check out the school,” said Sierra. “I liked seeing my new middle school and learning how to do all that cool stuff.” The Stephens students took measurements with a theodolite, which helps surveyors analyze distances and angles, used iPads to find their exact place and location in the building and determine the exact number of bricks it would take to construct an exterior wall. In addition, the students were toured the school with the project managers handling construction matters and the architects who worked on the school’s design. Clinton Schiver, an associate with VLK architects, said the project’s goal is to teach students about the construction process through engaging educational activities at the work site. “They grilled us pretty hard on why ‘this went here and not there’ and asked some questions that you wouldn’t expect from a typical fifth grader,” he said.

Myers Principal Angela Ricks said she was hoping that the project would get current elementary students excited about the new middle school and wanting to tell their friends about it. Upon seeing her first group of students on the planning team, Mrs. Ricks said she envisioned them being the group that begins to instill school pride at Myers from Day One. “It was an honor to tour the school before it was finished being built,” said Haden. “I will definitely share what I learned from the construction team with my friends.”

The Myers planning team will continue to meet each month throughout the construction process of the new school. Fifthgrade students from each of the other five elementary school feeders – Evers Park, Hodge, Pecan Creek, Rivera and Wilson – are scheduled to have the opportunity to take part in similar meetings and tasks as the first group from Stephens. A group of Rivera students were the second ones to ask questions, tour the school and get engaged in the construction when they became

part of the Myers planning/construction team this month. Any student interested in the opportunity can submit an application to be considered for this unique opportunity by logging onto the Myers homepage, clicking the Future Myers Students link http://www.dentonisd.org/Page/4 3560 - and completing the application. Garry Ryan, senior project manager for Balfour Beatty, said the goal of the program is to introduce the students to the construction and design process and show them

that there are exciting careers in the industry. Getting the ability to do the same things the professional do also gives them an understanding that what they’re doing in the classrooms with their teachers is used by builders, architects and engineers in the real world too, he said. “Going behind the scenes of the construction gave me a better understanding of what was going on. Understanding what was going on helped me to understand that meetings are important discussions about the construction,” Mitchell said.

Don’t let the ‘monster’ get you! Are you too tired to do your homework? Do you wish you didn’t have practice this week? Is falling asleep tough when laying in bed at night? If you can answer yes to any one of these questions, then you may be under attack by the overscheduling-under-rested monster! This monster can affect your health, friendships and social life. It can also affect your family life, especially when everyone is running around trying to go in different directions at the same time. Whether it’s trying to finish dinner before basketball practice or doing some extra work at home to catch the weekend dance recital, parents today are busier than ever. But kids, like adults, can suffer from over-scheduling – and that’s when this monster attacks. The key to avoiding the monster is to get plenty of rest and choose activities that fit your age and abilities. Here are some simple guidelines that might help: Plan to play one sport per season or do one weekly activity during the school year. Trying to do too much and keep up with school is a recipe for disaster. Stay organized. Keep a calendar with your activities and plan ahead to make sure you get plenty of rest.

Excellent and guaranteed jobs!!! •

Set priorities. Decide what is important and stick with it. Always remember that a chance to relax or just do nothing is just as important as doing an activity. Have an established nighttime routine and bedtime. This makes it easier on your body to adjust to your schedule. Allowing your mind and body plenty of time to relax and get rest is also important. Reading a book

or listening to soft music can put your mind at ease and even help you fall asleep. Following these guidelines and planning ahead with your family to get rest can help the over-scheduling monster stay away. While activities are important for many reasons, a growing mind and body need plenty of sleep and rest to stay healthy. - Jonita Widmer, director of health services for Denton ISD

Banana pancakes are great any time of the day Makes 8 Servings Prep Time: 15 min Cook Time: 20 min Ingredients 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour 3 tablespoons sugar 1 tablespoon baking powder 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg 5 tablespoons unsalted butter, divided 2 large eggs 1 1/4 cups reduced fat milk 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 cups sliced bananas (1/4-inch thick) 6 tablespoons vegetable oil, divided, for cooking (For a healthier option, use cooking spray instead of oil) Garnish: maple syrup and chopped pecans Mix flour, sugar, baking powder, salt and nutmeg together in a large bowl. Melt butter in a small saucepan over medium heat, and set aside. Whisk the eggs lightly in a medium bowl. Add the reduced fat milk, vanilla and 3 tablespoons of the melted butter, whisking until well mixed. Pour the egg mixture

into the flour mixture, stirring until the batter is smooth and thick. Heat the remaining 2 tablespoons melted butter in a large frying pan over medium heat. Add the banana slices and cook on both sides until caramelized and golden brown, about 3 to 4 minutes per side. Stir half of the cooked banana slices into the batter. Reserve the remaining banana slices for topping the pancakes. Heat 1 tablespoon of the oil in a large skillet or griddle over medium heat. Measure 1/2 cup batter per pancake and pour onto pan or griddle when oil is hot (the surface will appear to shimmer when the oil is the correct temperature). Cook until bubbles appear around the edges of the pancakes. Flip and cook until brown on the other side. Remove from the pan, setting aside in a warm oven. Carefully wipe out the pan or griddle and add more oil if necessary. To serve, arrange the pancakes on individual plates or on a serving platter and top with the reserved caramelized bananas, syrup, and pecans.
