35 Conferette a week away M
usic lovers are bracing for an influx of indie rockers, genrebenders and a barrage of beards. In one week, 35 Conferette opens its gates in downtown Denton for the third year running. The four-day conferette — and yes, that’s founder Chris Flemmons’ coined term for an event that offers panels that interest everyone from city planners, music industry wonks and music nerds, along with whip-your-hair rock — is intended to be a park-and-walk event. The festival will have outdoor stages in Denton’s central business district for lateafternoon and evening shows, and the reliable downtown watering holes are on board for the music after dark. The three outdoor stages include a free one open to the public on the Square. And must-see sets? On Thursday, March 10, soul-gospel singer Mavis Staples — known as a member of the Staple Singers and for songs like “Respect Yourself” and “I’ll Take You There” — will cap off the first evening of the festival on one of the event’s main stages. Staples just picked up her first Grammy Award last month, after being nominated in five different categories for the last eight years. Leading up to Staples’ performance will be the Secret Sisters, T Bone Burnett protegees Laura and Lydia Rogers, who turn out saloon-worthy tunes that are a little bit country, a little bit folk and an atom of Irish traditional. Friday, March 11, brings the Phila-

On Saturday, March 12, comedian, musician and Conan O’Brien darling Reggie Watts will perform on a festival main stage, which should discombobulate the audience just enough to make way for the stage headliner, Big Freedia, New Orleans’ fierce “sissy” — a self-identification used by the scene’s performers and fans who were born male but don’t necessarily identify as such. Her brand of music is bounce, a hybrid that braids the percussive vocals of hip-hop into club beats. Rapper Big Boi, one-half of the six-time Grammy-winning duo Outkast, will shut

‘Fantasticks’ revived on local stage
The Fantasticks ran for more than 40 years off-Broadway. Tyler Donahue, the director of the Music Theatre of Denton production opening Friday, said the popularity of the musical lies mostly in how it’s told. “I think it’s the honesty,” Donahue said. “The stage technique is there, but everything is really stripped down, so what you pay attention to is the story.” The story, Donahue said, is “the reverse Romeo and Juliet.” It is indeed. The musical (book by Tom Jones, score by Harvey Schmidt) is about two fathers who want their son and daughter to fall in love. They achieve their goal — but not
without some pain. Donahue said he’s directed the classic to unfold as if a group of actors assembles and then tells the story. True to the musical’s history, the characters take costume pieces and props out of boxes on the stage. Scenery is minimal — an actor will hoist a paper sun and moon on a halyard. The spare, presentational flavor of the play is part of its charm. “When you get to the end of Act I, you know something’s up, because Act I ends with a wedding. You get your happy ending halfway through. Something we’re doing to show how these characters — the lovers Matt and Luisa — change and become more real as the show goes on. They take
off pieces of their costumes until they’re down to their underwear, [but] they’re covered. The idea is that all they

songbook UNT Opera offers ‘Regina,’ spiked with jazz, blues
The University of North Texas Opera Theatre and Chamber Orchestra take on a different sort of opera in the closing weekend of Mark Blitzstein’s Regina. The adaptation of Lillian Hellman’s play The Little Foxes includes musical theater, jazz, Dixieland and blues in its libretto. Little Foxes watches the rise and fall of the central character, Regina, as her brothers use marriage to increase their fortunes. When Regina uses the same means — manipulating her husband, then stealing from him — the blunt-force moral trauma lands squarely between her eyes. Remaining performances are at 8 p.m. Friday and 3 p.m. Sunday in the Lyric Theatre at the Murchison Performing Arts Center, 1200 North Texas Blvd. Tickets are $15 to $35. (In numbers, Snarky Puppy is more of a litter than a band — it puts as many as 15 musicians in the studio and on the stage.) “I’ve been to Europe before with other bands, but it’s been a goal of mine to take this band to Europe, League said. First things first, though: the band’s yearly Mardi Gras tour. Friday night, the group brings Bourbon Street to Mulberry. “I don’t know that Hailey’s has a Mardi Gras party so much as we inflict Mardi Gras on Hailey’s, League said. “After spending so much time in New Orleans for the last four or five years, there’s so much of that kind of culture [that] has seeped into each of us. We’ve made a lot of friends in that area. We play New York, Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi quite a bit. The music that we play, which is kind of loosely in the jazz genre, that music has its roots in New Orleans. We have a couple of tunes that really are in the New Orleans jazz style. Each and every member of the band has attended University of North Texas and studied in the jazz program. Most of them have a UNT music degree. That explains both the jazz chops and the presence of UNT jazz students and faculty at Denton shows where the pups burn up the stage. League said he credits the non-jazz cats in the audience to the group’s habit of bending

the boundaries. “We have one rule in the band: Have a lot of rules and then break them all, League said. “I like to go into every situation with a plan, but the plan isn’t set in stone. Snarky Puppy has been taking liberties with jazz and rock for four years or so, and its risks have paid off in the form of regional buzz. The band has earned “best jazz titles and backs up its live game with a busy studio schedule. The band recently released a twodisc live album and DVD, Tell Your Friends. Later this month, Snarky Puppy will hit the road with Eastern Blok, a band that borrows flavors from traditional Balkan folk, Latin, flamenco and klezmer. The tour starts March 30 in Kentucky, comes back through Denton on April 1 and ends in Mississippi. The road isn’t too rough for the band, League said. “In 2010, we probably did 90 shows. I want us to put an album out every year-and-a-
half to two years, he said. “I think Asia and Europe will be good for us. Hopefully, we’ll go into the studio after we get back from Europe. Sounds like: A group of music nerds, reinforced with a dose of gin, folding pop and rock into a topsy-turvy set list of respected and respectable jazz standards. And then some. They’re with the band: Robert “Sput Searight, drums; Bobby Sparks, Shaun Martin, Cory Henry and Bill Laurance, keyboards; Chris McQueen, Bob Lanzetti and Mark Lettieri, guitar; Michael League, bass; Nate Werth, percussion; Justin Stanton, trumpet and keyboards; Mike Maher and Jay Jennings, trumpet; Chris Bullock, tenor saxophone; and Zach Brock, violin. ark cloth — a fabric with a funny name and a long tradition — furthers the University of North Texas School of Visual Arts and Design’s focus on sustainability. The latest exhibition, “Material Evolution: Ugandan Bark Cloth,” shows how this cloth made from the Ugandan mutuba trees can be used to make surprising things. The show, which features international artists, employs the fabric in objects such as men’s shoes, a jacket and a steering wheel wrap. Other featured items include artistic works such as wall coverings made of bark cloth and a bark cloth dress used in contemporary Ugandan wedding

‘Phantom’-themed event bolsters group’s charitable efforts By Ellen Ritscher Sackett Staff Writer
asquerade,” a Venetian ball inspired by the film adaptation of Phantom of the Opera, is the theme for this year’s Denton Benefit League black-tie charity event. “When I originally thought of the masquerade theme, I envisioned Act II, Scene I of Phantom of the Opera,” said ball chairwoman Carrie Langford, who is the first vice president of Denton Benefit League. “Romantic, mysterious, elegant” is how Langford described her vision. “I want it to be a jaw-dropping experience,” she said. “I’m selling the feeling,” Langford said. “It’s very dramatic.”
“M
The ball is the primary annual fundraiser for the Denton Benefit League’s community grant program. According to the league’s figures, the organization has given more than $3 million and has volunteered more than a half-million hours to local nonprofit agencies since its inception 36 years ago. Everyone, regardless of membership in the Denton Benefit League, is invited to the party, and ticket purchasers will “be helping their community by attending,” Langford said. “All the proceeds will go to
our grants.” Langford said the ballroom will be decorated with “beautiful candelabras and candlelight, lots of crystals, fallen chandeliers on the tables” and “deep-red roses.” First, however, attendees must first pass through a dark, torch-lit hall ensconced with fog in a twilight setting, escorted by a handsome masked man in a tuxedo. Phantom-inspired music will fill the air, as provided by piped-in recordings and a Denton High School string quartet. “I want [the guests] to feel like they’ve
entered into another time, they’re on an adventure into another land, another part of the world that they’ve never experienced before,” Langford said. This is the chance for women to dress up in lavish ball gowns and the men to sport tuxedos and suits. The primary accessory for the evening, however, will be elaborate Venetian
masks, embellished with crystals, jewels, flowers and feathers. Langford said the masks are “all neutral-based colors that will go with any ball gown — black, silver, gold, white” and “maybe a red or two.” See BENEFIT on 10

The benefit league will offer some for sale at the event, and they will also be available for purchase in advance, ranging in price from $25 to $75, by contacting Yvonne Honse at 940-735-1551. The masks and tuxedos are “optional, but preferred,” said Jackie Jackson, who is the publicity chairwoman for the ball. Langford wants to make sure people understand this is not a costume ball or a Halloween party. “Superman’s not welcome, and we’re hoping the Hulk doesn’t show up,” she said, and the benefit league women were playfully told by president Gail Graves to leave their Wonder Woman costumes in the closet. And although the event is Phantominspired, “Phantom’s not going to be there,” Langford said. The evening’s main entertainment will be Emerald City, a show band out of Dallas whose repertoire spans more than 50 years of popular music and original tunes. Guests will be able to dance to the tunes until midnight. “They are incredible,” Jackson said. “They sing everything under the sun.” Guests also will have the option to sit in a more intimate room, entertained by one of Denton’s finest pianists, Bob Rogers. Rogers creates “an atmosphere in that room that draws other people in after dinner to sing,” said Jackson. “He is a great supporter of DBL,” Jackson said, and “just a giving, talented person.” One of the highlights of the evening is entertainment by the Denton High School chamber and show choir. “Last year Denton High School’s entire theme was ‘Masquerade,’ so their orchestra, choir and bands and show choirs are so familiar with the Phantom of the Opera songs,” Langford said. League members got a preview during their meeting last November and were very impressed. It’ll be “a glee ball!” she said. The evening’s menu will be a European-style multicourse dinner, created by executive chef Mark Vogelsberg and sous-chef Ben Monteserin. The entree is a choice of Venetian

beef or herbed salmon with chardonnay chive butter sauce. There will be a cash bar, and each ticket holder will be given one complimentary drink ticket. Additional drink tickets can be purchased in advance when making reservations. Local businesses have given about “$148,000 in underwriting in monetary and in-kind donations,” Jackson said. Attendees will have the opportunity to bid on silent auction items, including the opportunity to be an extra on the CBS series How I Met Your Mother. “Minor League: Kids in Action,” a group of children and grandchildren of the league’s members, donated a thumbprint bowl, which will be filled with all the makings for movie night. The children made the bowl at an event in January, spearheaded by Graves. “These children came and did service projects,” such as making dog biscuits for the Denton Animal Shelter and picture frames for residents of Cumberland Presbyterian Children’s Home, Jackson said. By making this bowl, which was donated by Time to Kiln, “they’re also helping to raise money for the silent auction,” Jackson said. “The kids had a ball,” she said. “It’s awesome to get the kids involved.” Frank Zangrel, owner of First People’s Jewelers, donated this year’s raffle prize: a refurbished lady’s stainless steel Rolex Datejust watch with a custom diamond dial, jubilee band and diamond bezel. Raffle tickets are $20 each or three for $50. The Denton Benefit League has negotiated a special room rate with the Marriott hotel of $99 for an overnight stay. “The Marriott is a very contemporary, metro hotel,” Langford said. The location, just within Denton county limits, was chosen to accommodate large numbers of people in one room. The league hopes to attract as many as 500 guests to the ball. “It’s going to be a wonderful, amazing night,” Jackson said. ELLEN RITSCHER SACKETT can be reached at 940566-6845. OPENING FRIDAY Beastly (##) This predictable rendering of Beauty and the Beast, thrust into a contemporary high school setting, seems ready-made to pacify the Twilight crowd. The story has an arrogant snob (Alex Pettyfer) turned into a monstrous recluse by a spell that can only be broken if he finds true love. Then he notices a shy but pretty girl (Vanessa Hudgens) who is able to see past his scarred body and reach his heart. That should teach him a thing or two about being so shallow and conceited. Rated PG-13, 86 minutes. — Todd Jorgenson Every Day (##) There’s not much originality or insight to be found in this downbeat domestic melodrama about a husband (Liev Schreiber) trying to hold together relationships that includes his frazzled wife (Helen Hunt), grumpy father-in-law (Brian Dennehy), flirty co-worker (Carla Gugino) and gay son. The issues, which mostly revolve around caring for an ill parent, arise more through contrivance than realistic family dynamics, which decreases much of the emotional resonance. Rated R, 93 minutes. At the Fort Worth Museum of Modern Art. — T.J. Marwencol (####) This truly bizarre low-budget documentary follows Mark Hogancamp, who was brutally attacked outside of a bar, then awakened from a coma with little memory of his life. So his catharsis came in the form of a miniature town, complete with dozens of dolls, that helped him create an obsessive new world filled with family and friends. It’s a funny and disturbing glimpse into the work of an offbeat artist and into the therapeutic powers of imagination. Directed by Jeff Malmberg. Not rated, 83 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — T.J. Nora’s Will (###1/2) Mexican filmmaker Mariana Chenillo makes a promising debut with this family drama about a recently deceased woman who puts a clause in her will that throws her family’s burial plans into disarray as it is about to gather for Passover festivities. Then a secret is revealed that the woman herself never would have anticipated. Chenillo carefully balances the tone between broad comedy and quiet poignancy, resulting in a modest package with a unique cultural insight. Not rated, 92 minutes. At the

world. But the perpetually pop-eyed Norris wants it all, a decision that thrusts him and Elise into an on-again, off-again romance to complement the other intrigue. The quandary allows Nolfi to orchestrate his setshifting special effects and to free his supporting cast of Bureau workers (John Slattery, Anthony Mackie and Terence Stamp) to scurry around Brooklyn and Manhattan opening doors and looking frenzied. Being Hollywood, however, the film succumbs to an antiPhilip K. Dick ending, one drenched in schmaltz and treacle. But it was probably planned that way all along.
and other luminaries. Rated PG, 107 minutes. — B.A. Take Me Home Tonight A recent MIT grad avoiding adulthood from behind a video store counter tries to impress his high school crush at a wild summer party. With Topher Grace, Anna Faris and Dan Fogler. Rated R, 98 minutes. — Los Angeles Times
oor Matt Damon. He is so confused. He has a dilemma: follow his dreams and passions and end up with the love of his life (Emily Blunt, no less) or he can follow the prescribed “plan,” a future laid out for him by a vaguely defined group of fixers known as “The Adjustment Bureau.” If David Norris (Damon) follows the orders laid out in writer-director George Nolfi’s script based on a feverish plot from science-fiction writer Philip K. Dick (Blade Runner, Minority Report), he’ll demonstrate his lack of free will. That seems to be at the center of this overly orchestrated examination — free will versus determinism. The Adjustment Bureau may
not take its place at the top of the pantheon of films based on Philip K. Dick’s oeuvre, but director Nolfi does deliver a frenzied, fast-paced allegory pumped with ambivalence. He sets up the basic conflict and then lets his two main puppets twist and turn, while slowly revealing who pulls the strings. In the bargain, he may also unintentionally contribute to laughable conspiracy theories about mysterious events.
That’s not surprising considering its source. Bureau rests on a fantastical premise: Everything has already been laid out, including the fate of the world and everyone in it. The few times humans have been left alone resulted in world wars, environmental disasters, the Holocaust and so on. So The Bureau, a group of men wearing fedoras, goes around, stopping time and making “adjustments” to make sure everything goes according to a plan. Some may see them as guardian angels. When Norris loses a senatorial election, he randomly meets and falls for Elise (Blunt). But that is an accident because it interferes with the Bureau’s greater aim of eventually thrusting Norris into further electoral success, paving the way for him to save the
Angelika Dallas. — T.J. The Other Woman (##1/2) Freshlyminted Oscar winner Natalie Portman (Black Swan) stars in but cannot save this contrivance from writer-director Don Roos. She breaks up the marriage of a co-worker (Scott Cohen), marries him, and then must deal with his shrill ex-wife (Lisa
Kudrow) and resentful young son. Roos never lands on a single approach, mixing in lumpish quantities of humor, pathos and selfloathing. Rated R, 119 minutes. At the Texas Theatre. — Boo Allen Rango (##1/2) Unexceptional animated feature from director Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Caribbean)
serves as a spoof on old Westerns with its story of a city lizard, Rango (voice of Johnny Depp), thrust into the role of sheriff and savior to a desert town filled with repulsive, and possibly kid-frightening, creatures. Unimpressive animation receives voice help from Isla Fisher, Abigail Breslin, Alfred Molina, Ned Beatty
