‘Pageant’ a pitched battle for Miss Glamouresse tiara

fter winding down the best-selling show in its history, Les Miserables, Music Theatre of Denton set out to open the 2015-16 season with the comedy La Cage Aux Folles. A paltry turnout at the typical two-night auditions meant the company had to reshuffle the deck. The company didn’t stray too far, though, settling on Pageant, a musical comedy by Frank Kelly, Bill Russell, Albert Evans and Robert Longbottom. The foursome behind the musical describes it as “Miss America meets Kinky Boots.” A cast of men play the ladies lunging for the title of Miss Glamouresse, the spokesmodel representing Glamouresse cosmetics.
Adam Reese is master of ceremonies Frankie Cavalier. Judges selected from the audience will decide the pageant, which will put the contestants — Miss Deep South, Miss West
Coast, Miss Bible Belt, Miss Industrial Northeast, Miss Texas and Miss Great Plains — through their paces. And what might this glittery gauntlet include? A talent contest, a swimsuit competition, an evening gown segment and the truest test of the Miss Glamouresse pageant, the spokesmodel contest. And that tricky competition will have the contestants soothing the ruffled souls who call the Glamouresse beauty crisis hotline. Keeping the show on point is emcee Frankie Cavalier. The show should be considered rated PG-13. Performances are 7:30 p.m. this Friday and Saturday and on March 13-14, and at 2 p.m. this Sunday and March 15, at the Campus Theatre, 214 W. Hickory St. For tickets, call 940-382-1915 or visit http:// bit.ly/1FaYgqE. Tickets cost $20 for adults, $18 for seniors and $15 for students. — Lucinda Breeding

Atlanta’s Waka Flocka makes stop in Denton
R
ockin’ Rodeo is best known for staging weekly Red Dirt and country shows. But the venue has always appreciated hip-hop. On nights when the venue doesn’t have a show scheduled, Top 40 hiphop is on the playlist. And lately, Rockin’ Rodeo has been lending the stage to hip-hop acts — last year, country-rap artist Big Smo had a date at the Rodeo. Tonight, rising Denton hiphop artist AV the Great opens for Atlanta rap giant Waka Flocka Flame. AV the Great is still promoting the 2014 album Man N Da City II, and opens for Waka Flocka with Ace Young’n, Elijah Heaps and Denton’s DJ Ju$trill. Waka Flocka will perform music from his whole catalog, but expect some emphasis on his 2013 release From Roaches to Rollies.

The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel welcomes you to the Indian branch of God’s Waiting Room. For that’s what has become of the hotel featured so prominently in the 2011 surprise hit that now spawns this lame sequel. Since the original, it seems everyone left standing in the Indian hotel has grown old enough to now appreciate an endless stream of mordant conversation about the impending subject hanging over all of them: death. Examples of the wit: “Never say die until you die,” and “There is no such thing as an ending, just a place where

Limp farce, scenery-chewing leave stale taste for ‘Exotic’ sequel you leave the story.” The unduly long film should have listened to its own aphorism. To balance out these grim atmospherics, director John Madden allows his only young costar, Dev Patel, to unleash himself, as he constantly bounces off the scenery, waves his arms, make faces, screams and generally goes nuts. Everyone else in the cast must have been too tired to compete. Ol Parker’s overly busy script picks things up about where they were left. But even newcomers to the Best Exotic Mari-
gold Hotel can easily grasp the obvious dynamics working themselves out. The main plot device revolves around the possible purchase of another hotel property by Marigold’s owner, Sonny Kapoor (Patel), with Muriel Donnelly (Maggie Smith) helping the cause. Sonny and Muriel make a quick funding trip to America, just long enough for director Madden to insult the Yanks with remarks such as: “I went with low expectations but still came back disappointed.” The two then return to India as Sonny prepares for his upcoming wed-
ding, a main plot point squeezed for several extraneous sequences. Shortly after, Guy (Richard Gere) checks in, and Sonny believes him to be an American hotel inspector. Madden exploits this hoary plot device to set up various mistaken-identity situations meant to be funny. Everyone at the hotel has a plot, giving the film an episodic rhythm, almost like a television series. Most of the scenes take place inside, making the film look like it could have been photographed on a Burbank set and not in one of many colorful Indi-

The event, which features public transit, emergency and utility vehicles and more, will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at C.H. Collins Athletic Complex. Children will be able to climb onto and ask questions about each vehicle in a supervised environment. Admission is a suggested $2 donation. “It’s an opportunity for children and their families to explore interesting vehicles through touch,” founder and Explorium president Anyah Martinez said. “Children learn by exploring, through play and by using their imaginations.” Martinez hopes that this event can put Explorium Denton on the map and allow

The event will feature more than 30 different vehicle types, including construction trucks, boats, big rigs and a helicopter. “The event may also serve to stimulate interest in different career paths or lifelong hobbies,” Martinez said. Explorium Denton, founded in 2012, is an emerging children’s museum in Denton. Though organizers have put on mobile events, moving from place to place, Martinez said they hope to have a permanent location in the near future. April will mark the Explorium’s third season at the Denton Community Market, she said. “The money raised will help begin development of a traveling science museum,” board member Michelle Abeyta
said. Abeyta said proceeds from the Touch a Truck event will also benefit the Denton Public School Foundation, as part of a collaborative effort with the Denton school district. “It will be the ultimate extracurricular activity,” Martinez said. “We want to fill the gap between what children learn in the classroom and what goes on in real life.” Martinez said the Explorium is also currently accepting registrants for a spring break program in partnership with the Black Fox Players children’s theater group. Organizers are also planning additional summer programs at local libraries and the Denton Community Market. “Denton is a wonderful community

MOVIES Continued from Page 8 longer loves him. But he still loves her, and by his right, he won’t grant her a divorce. The trial stops and starts for over five years as the couple fight it out in the courtroom. This Golden Globe nominee is alternately infuriating, funny and insightful but always riveting. Not rated, 115 minutes. At the Angelika Film Center in Dallas. — Boo Allen Unfinished Business A guys-gonewild romp in the well-worn tradition of Todd Phillips’ Hangover franchise, this is the latest example of a movie that doesn’t work hard enough to freshen up the formula. Vince Vaughn plays Dan, a St. Louis sales exec who quits his job toiling for a bullying boss named Chuck (Sienna Miller) and starts his own company with retirement-age Timothy (Tom Wilkinson) and sweet-natured but slow-witted Mike (Dave Franco, you-know-who’s little brother). The unlikely trio travels first to Maine, then to Europe in an effort to beat out Chuck for a lucrative deal with a firm fronted by Jim Spinch (James Marsden). Needless to say, chaos ensues. But Unfinished Business never works up enough momentum to get us into the anarchic spirit of things. Directed by Ken Scott (Delivery Man). Rated R, 91 minutes. — The Hollywood Reporter

Sienna Miller takes the standard role of understanding wife. As a latter-day celluloid superhero comes to Broadway’s proving ground for a rebirth, the Burning Man histrionics are hysterically on point. Irony lurks in every shadow. Fittingly the film begins with a fiery object streaking toward Manhattan, where the highly agitated life of the actor Riggan (Keaton) plays out. The city is the perfect spot for filmmaker Alejandro G. Inarritu to build his pyre. James’ best-selling novel will find much to like and dislike. The likable elements will leave viewers wanting more, while among the dislikes will surely be a Sopranoslike ending that will send most home unsatisfied, or baffled. Rated R, 94 minutes. — LAT The Imitation Game ( ★ 1★ ⁄2) In ★a fact-based story, Benedict Cumberbatch stars as Alan Turing, a Cambridge mathematician recruited at the start of World War II to help break the German code. He succeeds and also invents the prototype of today’s computers, all while struggling to hide his homosexuality. Graham Moore’s script flips among three time periods to give a full portrait of Turing. Keira Knightley plays Turing’s close friend and work mate. Rated PG-13, 114 minutes. — B.A. Jupiter Ascending A house cleaner has her life turned upside down when she is saved from bounty hunters by a genetically engineered ex-military warrior and learns she is intergalactic royalty. With Channing Tatum, Mila
Kunis, Sean Bean and Eddie Redmayne. Written and directed by Lana Wachowski and Andy Wachowski. Rated PG-13, 127 minutes. — LAT Kingsman: The Secret Service ( ★ 1★ ⁄2) Colin ★ Firth stars in this fast-paced action thriller from Matthew Vaughn (Kick-Ass) as a spy working for England’s super-secret agency, Kingsman. He recruits a young working-class lad (Taron Egerton), trains him and then enlists him in his fight against a lisping supervillain threatening to wipe out the world (Samuel L. Jackson). Highly entertaining blend of the violent and the hilarious. Rated R, 129 minutes. — B.A. The Lazarus Effect Medical students discover a way to bring the dead back to life, but not without complications. With Evan Peters, Olivia Wilde and Donald Glover. Written by Luke Dawson and Jeremy Slater. Directed by David Gelb. Rated PG-13, 86 minutes. — LAT McFarland USA ( ★ ★) Hotheaded high school football coach Jim White (Kevin Costner) and his family move to the San Joaquin Valley from Boise, Idaho, where he squandered a much cushier job. He brings his wife (Maria Bello) and daughters (Morgan Saylor and Elsie Fisher). The White family is in the minority in their new town, which is composed mainly of pickers — men and women who do the backbreaking work of harvesting fruits, vegetables and nuts. Jim doesn’t last long as assistant football coach, but he notices that what these kids lack in tackling talent, they make up for in speed. He assembles seven boys into a cross country team and grooms them for glory. The movie also evokes emotions and suspense the way any good story about athletics should. A new sport doesn’t equate to new ground, but there is pleasure to be had in a formula that works. Directed by Niki Caro (Whale Rider, North Country). Rated PG, 128 minutes. — The Washington Post Still Alice Losing your mind is a terrible thing to watch, but the splendid acting in Still Alice makes it worth the pain. Scarier than any Elm Street nightmare, a horror film for the rest of us, it succeeds despite itself because of strong performances by Julianne Moore and Kristen Stewart. Rated PG-13, 99 minutes. — LAT The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water ( ★ 1★ ⁄2) Director ★ Paul Tibbitt’s new movie — the second feature-length outing for the durable Nickelodeon TV character — is zany and clever and fun (and in 3-D), as long as you can take 93 minutes of it. That may depend on your age. Bikini Bottom is addicted to Krabby Patties, the succulent burgers made only at Krusty Krab, the fastfood joint where SpongeBob (voiced by Tom Kenny) works for Mr. Krabs (Clancy Brown), who keeps the secret recipe stowed away in a vault. When the formula disappears, SpongeBob and his posse — Squidward (Rodger Bumpass), Sandy (Carolyn Lawrence) and Patrick (Bill Fagerbakke) — travel up to the surface and out of the water to track down the villanous pirate Burger Beard (Antonio Banderas, in live action). Rated PG, 93 minutes. — AP
