Denton’s Def Rain just dropped an LP.

Rainfall Cromeens’ electronic duo releases LP enton artist Ashley Cromeens is best known as part of the noisy band Record Hop (once raved over by human beatboxer Reggie Watts).

It could be that Cromeens most definitive work is through her project Def Rain, an electronic outfit she shares with Grant Ring, who is CJ Abe Lincoln. The duo just released a self-titled LP through Pour Le Corps Records.

The record release includes a video for the organladen track “Enemy,” a deliciously trance-y track that builds with the refrain “all fall down” over caffeinated beats.

The duo simultaneously released another track, “Love It When,” a tune that borrows a twangy retro melody that harkens back to the sexy, lazy guitar riffs of Elvis or Brian

Setzer. Cromeens’ goldenthroated contralto slides over the music, easy as pie, singing “I love it when you dance this way, I love it when you dance and sway …”

True to her indie rock roots, Cromeens doesn’t layer too much production gloss into the tracks. The sonic fuzz, a speaker feedback-like buzz and dampened effects keeps a real heart and soul in the music.

Friends of Jackson Strecher, a University of North Texas student who suffered a rare brain hemorrhage on New Year’s Day, will have a fundraiser in his honor Sunday.

The 2 p.m. event, “Jam for Jackson,” will be at the Center for the Visual Arts, 400 E. Hickory St. The fundraiser will include music, local food trucks and an auction.

There is no set admission cost, but attendees are being asked to make donations to support Strecher’s medical expenses. Donations for the Strecher family are also being collected online at www.gofundme.com/ HelpforJackson.

Strecher, 18, is awaiting brain surgery at Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Fort Worth after suffering a brain hemorrhage brought on by a condition known as arteriovenous malformation, an entanglement of arteries and veins that burst.

The Sunday jam features performances by the Lead Pipes, a local band that Jackson Strecher played with before his hemorrhage, as well as Cindy Maloney, Brave Combo and Polly Maynard. Performances are also planned by Denton Community Theatre, Music Theatre of Denton and Bonduris Music.

Strecher, a 2013 Denton High School graduate, was in his freshman year at UNT. “I’m very happy that he has such good friends that care about him,” his mother, Phaedra Strecher, told the Denton Record-Chronicle in January. “I just want to thank the entire community for their support. It means the world to us that Jackson is so loved by everyone.”

Brutal honesty

Hamell on Trial pleads human on new record

Hamell said it was important for the album to be honest — a habit that has cost the artist broader commercial appeal.

Swearing, sex and losing one’s religion keep Hamell on Trial from airplay.

“My profile is a lot bigger in Europe, probably because they aren’t quite so puritanical,” he said. “It’s funny, you know?

This is my fourth interview, and I just had this conversation with my publicist about how honest I would be about what I’m doing on this album.”

Hamell is a devoted dad to the son who was 8 when Hamell’s marriage ended. Hamell calls his ex-wife “a wonderful person” who has done everything possible to give their son plenty of time with his dad, at home and on the road. But parenthood means a heart has to bleed privately, sometimes.

“You go to any airport in the country, and pick up any book, and you’re going to find sex … crime, language. You see that in any art gallery, but songwriting is really conservative that way. I write how people really talk.”

F-bombs are peppered through the record, as are observations about sex and how a capitalist culture sells it. But Hamell said he doesn’t write about the suicidal thoughts that can dog a grieving man.

His own father committed suicide, Hamell said, and there are things you keep under wraps so that your children don’t have to carry your burdens.

Hamell stops in Denton for a show at Dan’s Silverleaf on Tuesday on his way to South By Southwest.

He said the local club stands out for him.

“You know, I’ve played all over the world, and Dan’s is one of my favorite places to play.

The club is good, the sound is good and the people are smart.

It’s like Ireland, the people love music and they don’t have pretensions,” he said.

If you asked Hamell on Trial what he’d name his latest album when it was taking its primordial shape, it sure as hell wouldn’t have been The Happiest Man in the World.

“I’d been married for 23 years, and then my marriage broke up. And I didn’t expect it,” the New York artist said. “I’d been sober for, oddly enough, 26 years when my marriage ended. I was in this place of total despair. Just darkness. I wrote a song a day for a year and put them on Youtube.”

Those songs would become the first drafts of Happiest Man. Hamell on Trial is the solo project of Ed Hamell, an antifolk musician who uses his guitar to wring out punk-folk and anything else that strikes his fancy. And what struck his fancy as he worked through his grief was how it can be as temporary as, well, marriage and life.

“I didn’t want the album to be dark because I’d already been in a dark place,” Hamell said. “As I wrote these songs, I realized that I was finding hope and optimism. That’s why I named the album The Happiest Man in the World.”

Hamell is blessed with a voice reminiscent of Van Morrison, and cursed with chronic honesty. Taken together, those ingredients make the album a poignant but rare confessional from a man facing his failures and sadness. Taken independently, those ingredients make the album hilarious in one track and heartbreaking in the next. “Lappa Oo Mau Mau” is a funky, upbeat trip through a narrator’s allegiance to finding pluck regardless of circumstance. The secret? To not care quite so much. It’s all matched by bluesy vocals, butt-bumping bass and dance-worthy keyboards. Hamell even makes use of carefree strings. “Ain’t That Love” is a guitar-backed reflection of a man pushed up to the threshold of a breakup. He sings “I can’t live without you,

Don’t you know I’d just as soon die … all the drinking was mad, all the mirrors we smashed, all the cars that we crashed, ain’t that love.” Arresting in its simplicity, the song is a fearless and searching moral inventory of a relationship that has survived an addict’s compulsions, fights that alarm neighbors and sheer boredom.

In the thick of regret, our narrator lists sins and bitterness, and ends in the question “ain’t that love.”

The record gives a glimpse into the lives of others — the woman who’s had to return to

the strip club to feed her children, the man who is on cloud nine because he got a job.

There is even a fun and frank song about a hot mom who needs love to rebound from a mastectomy or amputation.

Through it all, Hamell sustains a clear-eyed view of reality, and everyone knows such commitment is bound to leave a mark.

“I knew I wanted to write an album about the new America and the American Dream. The American Dream is still there.

People still want a home. They still want to go to a job that’s there for 30 years. The thing of

Music Theatre of Denton’s Spamalot can’t claim to be original in sound or in content.

The musical was born from years of work by surrealist English comedy troupe, Monty Python. The sketch group hit it big in Britain and in the states in the 1970s. The group’s television series, Monty Python’s Flying Circus, debuted in North America in 1970 and maintained its popularity here through the 1980s, both because of syndication of Flying Circus and the broad popularity of the cult films, Monty Python and the Holy

Grail (1974) and Monty Python’s Life of Brian, a movie that lampooned the New Testament in much the same way Holy Grail lampooned the grand British legend of King Arthur.

Holy Grail suggests that Arthur is a ditzy royal who loves the pomp of mystical Merlin-ized kingship rather than reality. The film skewers the Knights of the Round Table as a goofy band of halfwits on a quest for a cup that — if it existed — would be in the Middle East, not the forests of Britain (which are infested with the Plague, snotty French nobles and marauding Saxons).

But as musical director Arturo Ortega explains, familiarity ought not to be

confused with ease. As playful as the performers are, the musicians are expected to bring the same sense of jolly adventure and winkwink-nudge-nudge to both the score and the cast.

“There are a lot of jokes in the music,” Ortega said. “And there is a lot of back and forth banter between the actors and me.”

One such joke in the musical comes in a big number about Lancelot in the second act. The knight, drawn in legend as a fearless defender of chivalry, is converted from burly, sword-brandishing knight to newly minted gay rescuer of

Prince Herbert, who’d rather not get married to seal his dad’s royal might.

“The big Lancelot number is a disco song,” Ortega said.

Of course it is.

Brynne Huffman, the musical’s only leading Lady of the Lake, said the makers of Spamalot took a loving swipe at musical theater (and the performers who love them).

Every character in the musical is also a performer in a typical Broadway musical – very meta, Huffman said.

The Lady of the Lake calls for a diva who can handle R&B, opera, musical theater, gospel and nightclub singer styles. And the diva who plays her, Huffman said, is disgruntled with her scant time on stage.

Spamalot “Honestly, I think the show is spot-on about musical theater and divas,” Huffman said. “The diva behind the Lady of the Lake is sick of her life, and she’s fed up and wants everyone to know it.”

Huffman said she is a fan of Sara Ramirez (Grey’s Anatomy), who originated the role on Broadway.

She was a longtime fan of Ramirez’ treatment of the character — who tips a hat not just to the romantic leading ladies of Broadway, but to Barbara Streisand and Liza Minnelli.

“Breaking the fourth wall is one of my favorite things to do,” Huffman said. “I did a lot of research on the Lady of the Lake.

She’s gracious and very dedicated to her higher purpose. She might seem like she’s doing all these people a favor, all these knights. But she’s not, exactly.

She’s really self serving. Beware.

It’s all about what’s good for her.”

The diva isn’t so very different. The diva makes a lot of sacrifices to nurture her talents and further her career. And when the second act has rumbled on without her divine intervention, or her divinely trained voice.

Huffman said. “When you do this work, you learn to accept rejection. When you’re really passionate about so many shows, and you audition and you don’t make it, it can be tough. I auditioned for this roll twice and didn’t get it in other theaters — and I was really happy for the friends of mine who ended up getting those parts. But when you are really passionate, and you work and you audition and don’t get the parts you want to play, and you realize it’s happening more as you get older? Let’s just say I get her. I get the diva.”

Huffman is a magical guide to Ted Minette’s affable and dogged Arthur. Minette (The Producers, Avenue Q) is every bit the proud and chivalrous king. He isn’t sure why he doesn’t get the deference his title is due, but he gamely carries on with his fellow nights, Kevin Wickersham’s Sir Bedevere, Eric Ryan’s cowardly Sir Robin, Sterling Gafford’s handsome and long-suffering Sir Galahad and Jake Smith’s lantern-jawed Lancelot.

The show has opened the way for newcomers, among them 19-year-old Daniel Myers,

who is studying vocal performance at UNT. Myer plays several parts: Not Dead Fred, a jaunty victim of the plague, a minstrel singer and the tender Prince Herbert. Myers said Ortega told him about the show, and urged him to audition. He also grew up listening to his dad say lines from Holy Grail and Life of Brian.

“I actually auditioned for Herbert,” Myers said.

Myers plays Herbert as a cheerful teenage boy who’d rather gather flowers and blush than bed a princess.

“All I have is this impression of Herbert,” he said. “The impression is that he is in so far over his head that he pleads for a knight to rescue him.”

Herbert is locked in a castle tower by his own father, who knows his son isn’t a good candidate for royal battle or battlefield carnage.

“Part of it is a time-out and part of it is a pout,” Myers said.

“Herbert can’t fume, though.”

Spamalot should play to audiences as a series of jokes — that if they laugh too long, they’ll miss a joke. For Myers, though, the musical is an endurance test for any actor.

“I’m very afraid of settling,” he said. “I don’t like the idea of a director giving a note about something I’ve done wrong. That’s the first strike. The second is the director just not mentioning it again because I didn’t fix it.”

Director Bill Kirkley praised his cast and crew — which includes Janice LaPointe-Crump as choreographer, Gail Crump as specialty scene designer and Vicki Kirkley as costume and lighting designer.

“Everyone’s worked really hard, and I’m just really proud of them,” he said.

The musical closes this weekend.

Looks great, less thrilling ‘Empire’ rises in shadow of ‘300’ King Leonidas slipped into legend at the Battle of Thermopylae, martyred with 300 Spartans for the sake of Western Civilization and Spartan glory.

Go, tell the Spartans, stranger passing by That here, obedient to their laws, we lie.

So it was too much to hope that someone with Gerard Butler’s charismatic, bellowing swagger would be around for the sequel, 300: Rise of an Empire.

His Leonidas and his oileddown eight-pack are sorely missed, as are the quotable quatrains of that famous fight, the Spartan trash talk that sings through the ages. So many Persian arrows will rain on them that they will “blot out the sun”?

“Then we shall fight in the shade.”

There’s nothing that moving in Rise of an Empire, a more visually stunning but less thrilling epic with bloodier slow-motion sword fights, this time at sea. It lacks the heroic proportions and poetry of 300, mainly thanks to a less impressive cast and murky, forgettable script.

Sullivan Stapleton (Gangster Squad) is Themistokles, the Greek general who took the oracle’s prophecy that Greece could only be saved “by a wall of wood” (i.e., ships) to heart and fought the enormous Persian fleet at Artemisium and Salamis. That prophecy, by the way, isn’t shown. It’s a clever and quotably theatrical moment discarded as Queen Gorgo (Lena Headey) relates this oral history.

The movie opens at the end of Thermopylae, flashes back to the earlier Battle of Marathon, then flashes forward to the fictive present as Themistokles rallies the city states and prepares for battle at sea as Leonidas marches to his fate at Thermopylae.

The Persian fleet is led by the she-devil Artemisia, played by one-time Bond babe Eva Green, a seductive sword fighter in jetblack hair, Egyptian eye makeup and ancient Persian fishnet stockings. She purrs about “the ecstasy of steel” and demands of her admirals, “Is it too much to ask for victory?”

It is. The clever Greeks foil her and crush her huge war galleys at every turn.

Things get so bad that Artemesia summons Themistokles for a mid-Aegean parlay. And things turn so hot and heavy there that Themistokles has to teach her a little Latin — coitus interruptus.

Director Noam Murro did the college professor romance Smart People, in no way a recommendation for directing a red-blooded digital epic of an ancient sea battle. Zack Snyder, who directed the original 300, had a hand in the tin-eared script. It’s not graphic novel creator Frank Miller’s fault that Thermopylae, the basis for his

book 300, made for more elegiac history than Salamis.

But the design — a sea of grays and whites covered with heaving digital black ships and black sails and Persians clad in black battling Greeks in tiny brown boats — is stunning, an improvement over 2006’s 300.

And the action never disappoints.

It’s a pity this colorless cast doesn’t hold a candle to the Butler-Headey-Michael Fassbender-David Wenham crew of the original, that the writers couldn’t conjure up thrilling speeches to match the original.

Go tell the Spartans, stranger passing by, that these pretenders spoiled their franchise, and here their movie lies.
