entonRadio.com isn’t going up against the mammoth that is 35 Denton. It’s supplementing the festival with a free party of its own that will give its stage over entirely to local artists. (The city’s habit of creating spin-off festivals goes back as far as the Fry Street Fair.) The all-ages Denton Radio on the Square festival, which runs today through Sunday, includes up-and-coming Denton talent and bigger draws — My Kickdrum Heart, Ashley Gatta & the Free People, Bone Doggie & the Hickory Street Hellraisers and two-time Grammy-winning polka band Brave Combo. Audiences are welcome to pack lunches and dinners, or take advantage of the restaurants on the Square. DentonRadio.com is an online radio station devoted entirely to Denton music. The

here’s a timeless quality to what Wayne “The Train” Hancock” does with his voice and a guitar. His latest album, Ride, is another musical yarn spun with longtime collaborator Lloyd Maines and released on Bloodshot Records. Hancock is throwing what he’s calling a “homecoming party” at 11:30 p.m. Friday at Dan’s Silverleaf — which makes him one of the most sought-after acts on the second day of 35 Denton, the four-day downtown Denton music festival. By homecoming, Hancock means to pay tribute to the Denton venue that keeps him coming back — Dan’s Silverleaf. Ride is righteously retro without feeling overcooked — Hancock looks the part of his juke-joint swing king with slicked-back hair, pinup tats and rolled-up shirt sleeves. His guitar is more Chuck Berry than Elvis, and yet some of the tracks on Ride tip a worn hat to the King. “Low Down Blues” could work itself into a medley with “You Ain’t Nothin’ But a Hound Dog.” And “Deal Gone Down” recalls Berry’s “Johnny B. Goode.” In all, Hancock’s latest is a Western-styled expedition through the ups and downs of a single life and a singular love. Hancock is well booked on Friday between the danger folk of Denton’s Hares on the Mountain, the dustcovered vulnerability of Denton’s Danny Rush and the Designated Drivers and

Want to get as much flavor as possible from your produce? Cardo’s Farm Project and Hannah’s sous chef James Grandfield will demonstrate how to select, prepare and store fresh ingredients.

Farm fresh Cardo’s and chef teach how to set a wholesome table Cardo’s Farm Project wants you to treat your vegetables with care. The same goes for your fruits and legumes. The Ponder communitysupported agriculture organization has invited James Grandfield, a sous chef at Hannah’s Off the Square in Denton, to teach a workshop on how to coax the most flavor out of vegetables, fruit and legumes. Grandfield will teach at least one shortcut — how to select the best foods from the farmers market or the grocery store produce aisle. Grandfield also will teach workshop participants how proper storage can make these foodstuffs last, or how to store them for the flavor you want to use. The sous chef will make a

vegetarian soup and salad made with fresh produce from Cardo’s. Participants will sample food made onsite, and will leave with a “cheat sheet” of recipes that use the techniques learned for home cooking. Cardo’s Farm Project promotes sustainable agriculture at its farm in Ponder, using composting methods, adaptive fertilization, planting and harvesting to yield crops made available to members of the project and local chefs. Somehow, this trip over the rainbow lacks the wonder we all experienced the first time around. Oz the Great and Powerful isn’t really great or powerful.

Myth without magic By Christy Lemire AP Movie Critic

‘Great and Powerful’ can’t quite make it over the rainbow

Oz the Great and Powerful

Oz the Great and Powerful aims for nostalgia in older viewers who grew up on The Wizard of Oz and still hold the classic dear while simultaneously enchanting a newer, younger audience. It never really accomplishes either successfully. A prequel to the groundbreaking 1939 picture, Oz can be very pretty but also overlong and repetitive, with a plot that’s more plodding than dazzling. Director Sam Raimi also is trying to find his own balance here between creating a big-budget, 3-D blockbuster and placing his signature stamp of kitschy, darkly humorous horror. He’s done the lavish CGI thing before, with diminishing results, in the Spider-Man trilogy, but here he has the daunting task of doing so while mining an even more treasured pop-

culture phenomenon. At its center is a miscast James Franco, co-star of Raimi’s Spider-Man movies, as the circus huckster who becomes the reluctant Wizard of Oz. Franco seems too boyish for the role; he’s neither charismatic nor self-loathing enough and his performance frequently consists of hammy goofing. So when his character does have a change of heart and decides to accept his destiny as a noble and inspiring leader, it rings hollow. Before he gets there, though, he must journey through the Technicolor-tinted splendor of this wildly dreamlike place, not once but many times, which feels redundant. But then again, so does the whole struc-

ture of the film itself. Like Dorothy, Franco’s Oscar Diggs is whisked away from sepia-toned, rural Kansas of 1905 through a tornado to the vibrantly hued, magical land. Like Dorothy, he walks along the yellow brick road with some new companions who have ties to his old life back home: a wisecracking, flying monkey (voiced by Zach Braff, channeling Billy Crystal) and a spritely but resourceful china doll (voiced by Joey King). And like Dorothy, once he reaches his destination, he must face a witch. But which witch is which? First, he meets the beautiful and naive Theodora (Mila Kunis), who believes he is the wonderful wizard her father,

the king, said would come to save Oz in a prophecy before he was killed. Next comes Theodora’s sophisticated and deceitful sister, Evanora (a funny, vampy Rachel Weisz), who rules over Emerald City. Finally, there’s Glinda the Good Witch, played by a sweetly ethereal Michelle Williams. Oz the Great and Powerful plays with the notion of making people believe through spectacle and trickery — that what you see is more important than what you actually get. But this time, something is missing in the magic.

The Last Exorcism Part II A young woman tries to start a new life after a harrowing ordeal, only to once again encounter a demonic presence. Rated PG-13, 88 minutes. — LAT Quartet Dustin Hoffman makes his directing debut with this charming

and poignant adaptation of the Ronald Harwood stage play about four old friends in a home for retired musicians. Rated PG-13, 98 minutes. — The Philadelphia Inquirer Snitch When his teenage son is wrongfully accused of a drug-distri-

bution crime, a desperate father cuts a deal with the U.S. attorney to infiltrate a drug cartel on a risky mission. With Dwayne Johnson, Susan Sarandon and Benjamin Bratt. Rated PG-13, 112 minutes. — LAT 21 and Over When his two best

friends pay him a surprise visit for his 21st birthday, a straight-A college student throws caution to the wind for a wild night, despite having an important medical school interview the next morning. Rated R, 93 minutes. — LAT

Rated PG, 130 minutes. Opens Friday.

its 28th year, the festival is the same as ever. Professional and rising storytellers share all-ages stories, starting with ghost tales tonight, and when they aren’t performing, the tellers will lead workshops and master classes for both established and beginning storytellers. Each day ends with a concert with the featured tellers. Two featured performers are returning guests. Willy Claflin returns with sidekick and hand puppet Maynard Moose. A regular at the National Storytelling Festival, Claflin tells original stories See FESTIVAL on 10

Festival and, of late, has a one-man show telling the story of his great-great-aunt Victoria Claflin Woodhull — the first woman to run for president in 1872. Also returning is DeCee Cornish, a touring artist with the Texas Commission on the Arts. His specialty is African tales and African-American

history and folklore. Based in Dallas, Cornish has traveled to Denton for the festival often over the last 10 years. One of the festival’s newer faces is Georgia native Andy Offutt Irwin. The humorist and musician has a way with voices — imitating an old aunt and her late husband with ease. Irwin might not accept the

label of human beatbox, but he’s known for making a surprising number of sound effects with just his mouth. Motoko, a native of Osaka, Japan, will also appear at the festival. She came to the U.S. as an exchange student and eventually worked as a Japanese See FESTIVAL on 11

Festival instructor at the University of Massachusetts. Her partner, Eshu Bumpas, a jazz vocalist, initiated her into the tradition of American storytelling. She tried the craft for herself, and has become known for her stories of Japanese girlhood and for her stage movement. Motoko studied with the late master mime Tony Montanaro and uses the art form to communicate from the stage. Her performances are

lauded for their expressiveness as well as her restraint. Motoko performs quietly and with subtlety. Most concerts are suitable for families, though some stories shared during the opening night ghost tales concerts can be unnerving.
