THURSDAY NIGHT MUSIC

Jazz finds home on the Square

S

tarting this month, UNT on the Square is teaming up with the University of North Texas College of Music to bring live music to downtown Denton through April. “Thursday Night Music” features faculty and student musicians from the university who will present a variety of musical styles, including jazz, classical and new music. The series began last week at the university art gallery with a group led by jazz saxophonist John Murphy, chairman of UNT’s Division of Jazz Studies and organizer of the weekly series. Murphy will be back tonight with pianist Sean Giddings, Daniel Parr on bass and Justin Heaverin on drums. Herbert Holl, director of the UNT

Institute for the Advancement of the Arts, said “the space works very well for music.” He said last week’s “outstanding” jazz offering “gave the Square a fun, urban vibe” that drew people to the gallery. “This is not a formal concert setting. People should feel free to come and go as they wish,” he said. “People can wander around and look at the art.” “If you’re the kind of person that can’t sit still during concerts, this is your venue!” Holl said. Plans are in the works to continue the series, possibly in the summer and fall. “I hope it will become another Denton tradition,” Holl said.

Monumental effort

Moving Mountains polishes post-rock

N

ot long after the 35 Conferette crowds disperse and the musicians that drew them here head for South by Southwest in Austin, there will still be indie touring bands worth hearing in Denton and good reason to head to Hailey’s for more than a brew. Moving Mountains may not be as earth-altering as its name implies, but the four-man band from Purchase, N.Y., has both muscle and might. There’s no such thing as passive listening here, no. The post-rock band is very much plugged-in — literally and figuratively — with rhythmically tight-on-target intensity, emotional and, at times, on-the-edge vocals, unapologetic, personal lyrics, and a decidedly driven delivery. Moving Mountains’ second full-length album, Waves, is the band’s first collective effort. The recording evolved over time in a studio basement, and its release

is not for another two months — May 10, to be exact. Fans will undoubtedly get a preview on Tuesday night, when the band performs on the same stage as O’Brother, Death on Two

Wheels, and Into It. Over It. “MovMou” — the band’s selfprofessed nickname — makes its 10th stop on its March tour in Denton, the last before its SXSW debut. Fortunately, Denton will hear MovMou with all the final touches, but without the pressure. The evening could well be epic. — Ellen Ritscher Sackett

Patton wears Big Boi persona with fresh rhymes, risk By Lucinda Breeding Features Editor

anything could make 35 Conferette feel less like a

love letter to indie music and all its attendant earnestness, it’s a knocking, thumping, booty-shaking live set by Big Boi. Big Boi, nee Antwan Andre Patton, is probably best known as

one half of the six-time Grammy Award-winning hip-hop duo OutKast. The Georgia-based artist will close the music festival with beats and bravado. Big Boi released his latest record, Sir Lucious Left Foot ... The Son of Chico Dusty, in July. The record covers plenty of stylistic fronts, with the signature hip-hop touches. He features fresh young talent (like the audacious Janelle Monae) and lets established musicians shine (like funk godfather George Clinton). Sir Lucious showcases the artist’s rapid-fire flow and his knack for making a dirty turn of phrase sound like a sugar-coated confection. The album is divided between hip-hop, telling a personal story with tracks such as “Hustle Blood,” and the posturing of rap, like “Shutterbug.” stylBig Boi made us chase him a little, but ist finally gave the rap’s pre-eminent musical Denton Record-Chronicle a sliver of his schedule.

DRC Sir Lucious Left Foot has a lot to offer an attentiondeficit listener. You hit a cool party vibe on tracks like “Shutterbug” (which includes a nice hat tip to Soul II Soul, by the way). You have some flirtatious flavor with “Theme Song.” You recorded some personal songs. How do you manage to write a body of work from such a broad creative landscape? BIG BOI Basically, I guess my thought process is something of a scatterbrain. I have stuff going on all day. I’m constantly listening to different things, watching a lot of stuff. I’ve always got stuff going on. So when it comes time to write, all of that’s in my head. I call it a real brain tsunami. DRC What made you gravitate toward the artists you feature on the album — T.I., Janelle Monae, Yelawolf? What did they bring to your music that you just had to have? BIG BOI I like to work with artists that I kind of admire, that are kind of different. Something that Janelle, for instance, brings to my music is fearless creativity. When we do a record together, it’s going to be out of this world. When I get artists involved, I want to push them outside of their comfort zone. For me, it’s about adventure with these artists. When you push them past the comfort zone, you can really get the music working.

terms of melody, like a hip-hop song. What did you hear in that song that made you take the risk on it as a hip-hop track? BIG BOI First and foremost, I don’t consider myself a hip-hop artist. It’s broader than that. The music I do, you can’t just call it hip-hop. When I heard the song “Be Still,” I knew there was a way to take the song to another level.

Big Boi

DRC During your formative years as a rap fan and then as an artist, did you foresee hiphop following in jazz’s footsteps? You know, by becoming reggaeton, Latin hip-hop and eventually, along with it, becoming the rhythmic spine of pop songs by artists like Ke$ha? BIG BOI Not really. You know, you never can really tell where it would go. My goal is to make the coldest music in the world. You have to use whatev-

DRC You’re a survivor in the hip-hop landscape. You’ve been in the business since the early 1990s and call shots now as a producer. What does it take to make as many records as you have? BIG BOI You have to be innovative. It’s all about innovation, taking risks on music. And you have to do music. These days some of the music created isn’t even music. It’s just noise. You have to strive to create that new sound, that new music.

Sisters titled album that mines the likes of Hank Williams, Buck Owens and Bill Monroe without trying to imitate Patsy Cline. Shades of blue follow the sisters through the album, touching on love’s sweet discovery in “My Heart Skips a Beat,” loving from afar in “Tennessee Me,” and lurking in the doldrums with tracks like “Why Don’t You Love Me.” The siblings touched base with the Denton Record-Chronicle just a day after coming home from a European tour.

DRC Who sings melody and who sings harmony? LYDIA Usually, Laura sings melody and I usually sing the harmony. We do switch it up. DRC Your self-titled album is nostalgic, and your promotional photos have the same feeling. Why are the two of you drawn to roots music? LAURA I think we’re just drawn to it because it was instilled in us when we were

really young. We’re guilty sometimes of romanticizing the past and that era. We feel like the music is really sincere and it is still applicable to what people live with today. We really like the singers of that time, too. In those days, what you heard while the singer was in the studio was what you heard on the record. LYDIA Exactly. We really want to have the same sound live as we have on the record. Now everything is so overproduced.

prise us when they say “My 4year-old loves your music!” I don’t know what it is about it, but they definitely do.

DRC Do you find that all ages enjoy your music? It’s not just older people who are familiar with that music? LAURA Oh, yeah. Absolutely. I think it’s been such an interesting thing to see who is drawn to our music. We consider ourselves country music artists, and we find that people have a different idea of what country music is, and they don’t consider us country musicians. It’s been really fun to see, too, that there are lots of little kids who like our music. And I’m talking about 3-to-8-year-olds. People sur-

DRC What do you think producer T Bone Burnett brought to this album? LAURA T Bone is, for us, someone who brought a signature sound to the record. He made it appealing to a broader group of people. It really kind of helped bring his audience in. I think we would have gotten our own audience no matter what, but to have him say ‘I like this’ made a huge difference. LYDIA We were really, really lucky having him on board. We had made the record in February [2010], and he came along

DRC Did the two of you grow up singing in church? Why do I hear old Methodist hymn-singing in your voices? LYDIA We grew up in the Church of Christ — and I don’t know if you know this, but that movement doesn’t use any musical instruments [during worship] — you really have to learn how to harmonize.

a few months later and just turned our world upside-down.

DRC Now that the album is on shelves, what do feel it accomplishes artistically? LAURA It accomplishes some things we intended. Not to be completely shallow, but it’s a fun record. It’s a good time. To go a little deeper, one thing that we really wanted on this record was to bring attention to that kind of music. Where we are now, people have really forgotten where we came from musically and how that affects where we’re going. LYDIA Something has really shifted in the music business. We always say you have to know where you came from. We’d like to bring people back to that part of our history.

DRC What can Denton audiences expect from your live set on Thursday? LYDIA The setup is just us and a guitar. We’ll play some songs from the record, but it’s pretty different from our record. LAURA Beyond the songs and the setup, we try to make

our audiences feel like it’s a shared experience. I don’t like it when an artist doesn’t share the music with the audience. We really want it to be almost a conversation with the people who come, and make it something that it wouldn’t be if we all weren’t there at that moment.

DRC If the producers of Glee called and said: “Guys, we’re going to have the cast sing ‘I’ve Got a Feeling,’” would you be happy or terrified? LYDIA That’s hard to say. ... That song isn’t ours — it belongs to the people who wrote it. ... I’ve never watched an episode of Glee. DRC Who would you love to see at the festival? LAURA Mavis Staples, definitely. LYDIA If we could make it to see her, that’d be my first choice. That’s who we’d like to see. That would be amazing. LUCINDA BREEDING can be reached at 940-5666877. Everyone needs a mom. And, judging by Disney’s new 3-D animated feature Mars Needs Moms, mothers are also needed in outer space. Mars Needs Moms is produced by the same team behind the motion-capture hits A Christmas Carol and The Polar Express. The process renders characters that look almost lifelike. But here, it also means a lack of visual excellence, as Mars Needs Mom takes place mostly on a planet overcast with grays and muted tones. Simon Wells (great-grandson of H.G.) directs from the script he co-wrote with Wendy Wells based on the book by irreverent yet revered cartoonist Berkeley Breathed (Bloom County). Mars Needs Moms mostly stays in safe territory, with its tale of 9-year-old Milo (voiced by Seth Green), who tells his
