joined three other couples with various music backgrounds to create this event. “I’m pumped about it just from a fan standpoint,” he said. Siske hopes this will be an opportunity for people to invite their friends who wouldn’t normally go to church. He said Brian “Head” Welch,

formerly of the band Korn, epitomizes what he hopes this event will do. Welch has said he was addicted to drugs but beat his addiction when he rededicated his life to God. Thomas said the event will have a casual atmosphere and will include food and activities such as a rock-climbing wall and obstacle course. Tickets are $29.50 until Friday and $35 thereafter. ‘Pirates’ poised to walk the plank

DEADLINE:

he most tender-hearted of all pirates will sail into a Gilbert and Sullivan sunset this weekend when Music Theatre of Denton closes the comic opera. Pirates of Penzance is about a young man, Frederic, indentured to a gang of pirates until his 21st birthday. He hopes to end his servitude with a new life with the dewy young Mabel, but learns that he was born on leap year. He has to stay aboard with the pirates another 63 years. Heartache? This is the work of William S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan. That spells bumpy, ridiculous plots set to music that sounds light and fluffy, but takes an able singer to whip through them. Johnny Williams reprises the

role of Maj. Gen. Stanley for the third time, and Michael Rausch returns to the Denton stage as the leading Rausch man, Frederic. Meredith Browning plays Frederic’s love interest, Mabel, and Jaime King plays the Pirate King. John Evarts directs. Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday at the Campus Theatre, 214 W. Hickory St. in Denton. Tickets are $18 for adults, $16 for seniors and $10 for students. Author to sign new book R elate fundamental geometry to quilting, and what do you get? A fun, hands-on educational activity and book-signing event for third- through sixth-graders at Barnes and Noble Booksellers, 2201 S. Interstate 35E. The event takes place at 4 p.m. today and will be repeated at 2 p.m. Saturday. Together author and teacher Karen Ferrell and quilter Terri Vogds will introduce geometric concepts through quilting. Children will learn about squares, equilateral triangles and hexagons by learning “The Polygon Song,” and then use these shapes to turn tessellations into quilt patterns. The event features The Great Polygon Caper, the second book in the “Adventures in Mathopolis” series, by Karen Ferrell, illustrated by Tom Kerr, which familiarizes children with geometry fundamentals. In Ferrell’s story, Mayor Lostis Marbles needs help and turns to superhero Kent Clark, a 15-year-old skateboarder known as Edge Master. Edge Master helps the mayor solve problems that involve angles, polygons, triangles, quadrangles, squares, prisms and pyramids. Ferrell will sign copies of her book. She teaches geometry at Northwest High School in Justin and was an instructional technology coordinator for the district. She won the state’s Adult and Community Education Outstanding Instructor award in 2006. Terry Vogds is a Denton Quilt Guild member and serves on the organization’s Storybook Quilts Committee. “This is our first chance to work with the Denton Quilt Guild outside of our Storybook

oby Keith’s fans had a chance to see the country-Western superstar at the grand opening of his latest venue, Toby Keith’s I Love This Bar and Grill, at Winstar World Casino. The casino, an economic enterprise of the Chickasaw Nation, is about 45 miles north of Denton in Thackerville, Okla. At Monday’s grand opening, the Oklahoman said he was honored to be in the state to open his sixth restaurant named after his hit single, “I Love This Bar.” Keith recommended the fried-bologna sandwich to the crowd, and said they’d “have to turn the Texas flag upside down” — referring to a Long Star State flag on the wall — to which the crowd responded with chuckles and boos. Oklahoma University memorabilia also hangs on the walls, including a neon “Sooners” sign with a reverse image of Oklahoma, its panhandle pointing to the right. More than 100 pieces of Keith memorabilia fill the 16,000-square-foot restaurant, including quadruple- and multi-platinum records, guitars and the fatigues he wore to

visit the troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. Two jumboscreen TVs play Keith music videos as well as sports. The lengthwise slice of a Ford truck mounted on the west wall was used in the 2008 movie Beer for My Horses, starring Keith as a rogue deputy sheriff in a small Oklahoma town, and a dozen white Ford tailgates are used for seating around the restaurant. The restaurant’s east wall is glass, offering a view into the casino. The menu features Southern-style fare, including chicken-fried steak, barbecued ribs and meatloaf — among Keith’s favorites from his days as an oil field worker. Another menu feature is the American Soldier Special — a cheeseburger with fries and a drink, served on the house once to each service member with proper ID. An enormous photograph of Keith performing for the troops covers part of a wall behind a stage, where live music will be provided without a cover charge on Friday and Saturday nights. There are no Keith performances scheduled, but fans may still catch a glimpse of him. Keith owns a ranch on the Red River 30 miles west of the casino, and while in Oklahoma, he says he likes to hunt, fish and play golf. He made no mention of gambling.

OPENING FRIDAY

Green Zone (###) In this latest Iraq War movie that the public will ignore, Matt Damon plays a chief warrant officer searching for weapons of mass destruction. Instead, he finds himself embroiled in Iraqi military intrigue and an American governmental cover-up. Director Paul Greengrass renders his trademark nonstop, chaotic violence. With Amy Ryan, Greg Kinnear and Brendan Gleeson. Rated R, 115 minutes. — Boo Allen Police Adjective (##1/2) In this critically praised Romanian film, a police detective (Dragos Bucur) stakes out and then follows a young man suspected of smoking and perhaps dealing marijuana. He finds nothing, while arguing with his superior about whether his pursuit is pointless. At home, he argues with his wife about grammar. The measured pace will not appeal to everyone. Not rated, 113 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — B.A. A Prophet (####) Jacques Audiard directed this riveting Oscarnominated French film, which bristles with danger. A 19-year-old Arab boy (Tahar Rahim) lands in a French prison where he comes under the protection of a mafia leader (Niels Arestrup), but at a huge price. As time passes, the boy learns how to take advantage of his prison life, while it turns him into a hardened criminal. Fascinating depiction. Rated R, 155 minutes. At the Angelika Plano. — B.A. Our Family Wedding (#) Three years ago, Forest Whitaker won an Oscar. Here, he's dry-humped by a goat. Whitaker and Carlos Mencia play squabbling fathers who are forced to find common ground when they discover their children (Lance Gross and America Ferrera) are engaged. The wedding plans set off a series of cultural misunderstandings between the families, depicted with a stereotypical mix of flat one-liners and tasteless slapstick gags. And it all winds up just as you'd imagine. Directed by Rick Famuyiwa (Brown Sugar). Rated PG-13, 101 minutes. — Todd Jorgenson She’s Out of My League An average guy (Jay Baruchel of Undeclared) scores big when a super-babe inexplicably falls for him. Rated R, 104 minutes. — The Associated Press

Emilie de Ravin, right, and Robert Pattinson are shown in a scene from Remember Me.

Forgettable, unforgivable ‘Remember Me’ just maudlin junk By Boo Allen Film Critic

O

n its surface, Remember Me looks like little more than a shameless, albeit understandable, attempt to capitalize on the sudden popularity of wooden young actor Robert Pattinson, he of Twilight fame. But, like Caesar, it has greater ambitions. Remember Me revolves around two young people in New York City in 2001. They have both suffered the loss of a close relative and, in a blatant cry for sympathy, they readily display their palpable angst, even though the losses were 10 and six years previous. Director Allen Coulter, from Will Fetters’ script, won’t let the two forget their losses, and neither the two nor Coulter are about to let us forget either.

So, Remember Me asks viewers to invest emotion in these two 21-year-olds who, even apart from their grief, seem to have few admirable qualities. Travis (Pattinson) seems to do nothing more than sit around and smoke, drink and exchange banalities with his roommate. Travis is alienated from his father, Wall Street bigshot Charles (Pierce Brosnan, trying on a clumsy New Yawk accent). Tellingly, the whiney Travis feels more comfortable with his 11-year-old sister Caroline (Ruby Jerins), while Ally (Emilie de Ravin) lives with her policeman father Neil (Chris Cooper). But she still suffers from seeing her mother murdered in the subway 10 years previous. From there, these two inevitably meet movie-cute and begin a romance. Nothing of significance suggests that this coupling is any more or less

Remember Me Rated PG-13, 128 minutes. Opens Friday.

than any usual movie-romance. But that does not stop director Coulter from documenting it in painful detail for more than two hours. Coulter would not seem to be the logical choice to handle this material, having accomplished his most notable directing credits by helming the dark TV series The Sopranos and Six Feet Under. But here, he has no gunplay or grisly murders to break up the narrative monotony. When Travis does erupt and make noise, seemingly a difficult transition for the comatose Pattinson, the display seems as contrived as the rest of this cheap melodrama. But, despite rendering a maudlin, too-lengthy examination of building grief and its effects, Remember Me wallows deepest in shame by concluding its treacly treatise by drawing on the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in a final plea for emotion. Unforgivable.

Alice in Wonderland Johnny Depp is the Mad Hatter in Tim Burton’s take on the Lewis Carroll adventures of a girl who goes through the looking glass. With Anne Hathaway as the White Queen, Helena BonhamCarter as the Red Queen and Mia Wasikowska as Alice. Also showing in 3-D. Rated PG, 109 minutes. — AP The Book of Eli (##) Denzel Washington does his best to salvage this heavy-handed post-apocalyptic thriller of sorts from the Hughes brothers (Menace 2 Society). He plays a resourceful, spiritual loner who wanders a barren landscape ravaged by war, determined to fulfill a mission that involves a treasured book. There are some interesting concepts here, but as the film reveals its secrets about the hero’s identity and motives, you realize the script takes itself too seriously, and isn’t clever enough to match. Also stars Gary Oldman and Mila Kunis. Rated R, 117 minutes. — T.J. Brooklyn’s Finest During seven fateful days, three officers (Richard Gere, Ethan Hawke and Don Cheadle) find themselves swept away by the violence and corruption of Brooklyn’s gritty 65th Precinct and its most treacherous criminals. Directed by Antoine Fuqua (Training Day). Rated R, 132 minutes. Cop Out A stolen baseball card sets two detectives (Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan) on the path of a memorabilia-obsessed mobster. Directed by Kevin Smith. — AP The Crazies (##1/2) In this remake of George Romero’s 1973 sci-fi schlock, a small Iowa town is hit with a deadly virus when a chemical transport airplane goes down nearby. When everyone in town starts acting, well, crazy, government troops invade, killing everyone infected. The sheriff (Timothy Olyphant) and his wife (Radha Mitchell) flee, making for a succession of consistently nerve-wracking and violent scenes. Rated R, 101 minutes. — B.A. Dear John (##) Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried star in this adaptation of Nicholas Sparks’ sappy novel about two young lovers who meet briefly and fall in love before he goes off to war. Time and circumstance prevent their reunion, while director Lasse Hallstrom manipulates all circumstances to render a tearstained melodrama. Rated PG-13, 105 minutes. — B.A. Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief (##1/2) Chris Columbus directs this heavily effects-laden movie based on Rick Riordan’s young adult novel about young Percy Jackson (Logan Lerman), who learns of his demigod status as son of a Greek god and mortal mother. He must travel with his two friends (Brandon T. Jackson and Alexandra Daddario) to the underworld to rescue his mother, while Zeus, Hades, and his father, Poseidon, battle over some lightning bolt. Or something. Rated PG, 119 minutes. — B.A.

he members of Midlake could have gotten wrapped up in anxiety over critical and fan response to its highly anticipated third release, The Courage of Others. They didn’t, guitarist Eric Pulido said. They spent their anxiety on writing the record, and making it “honest.” Being something it isn’t, it turns out, is out of the question for the Denton quintet. While urban styles and noisy electronic stuff hit music consumers of the West like a fire hose, Midlake keeps it quiet, sad and maybe even a little spiritual on Courage. That doesn’t mean the band isn’t aware of the eyes and ears on it. “I mean, obviously we’re really glad that the band has been getting attention,” Pulido said in a phone interview

“We wanted to do something original. We wanted to evoke this kind of emotion, with the music and the lyrical motion and the surprise.” — Midlake guitarist Eric Pulido that took the band’s van through Mountain Standard Time regions. “Obviously, we’re happy that people have recognized what we’re doing, and the talent in the band lately. And the town has been getting a lot of attention, too. Any band that makes records wants to be heard.” Before Midlake released The Courage of Others, the band had earned a lot of love from music journalists at home and across the Atlantic Ocean. Rolling Stone spilled favorable ink over tracks from Midlake’s The Trials of Van Occupanther. The Guardian, a respected

liberal journal in England, found Midlake’s music full of lore and lyricism. National Public Radio’s World Cafe devoted airtime to Pulido and Midlake’s music. The Courage of Others dropped on Feb. 2. Reviews ran from reverent to cranky. “You know, any pressure that is on us is pressure that we put on ourselves to put a good record out,” Pulido said. “We want to make records that we can stand behind 10 years later, you know? We want to make records that we don’t cringe when we hear it years later. But we know there are listeners who have

expectations. “But, you know, you go crazy if you get too bogged down in what people think.” Courage has lent itself to almost as many interpretations as there are music journalists who gave the record blog and print space. We have liftoff What’s new: The Eight Track Museum is nearly ready for audiences. We’ve listened to a bare-bones crew of artists framing walls and installing sheetrock just on the other side of the newsroom wall at the Denton Record-Chronicle. Who we’re excited about: Chris Flemmons, a founder of North by 35, will talk to Kris Boyd on her show Think on KERA-FM (90.1) at 1 p.m. Friday. Sure, the festival is only in its second year, but we think it has the kind of Flemmons import that makes the event ripe for analysis from the likes of Boyd. She has a knack for sharp, witty interviews that Boyd get to the heat of an issue in a short span of time. Listen up on Friday. Our favorite blog interview so far: We’ve enjoyed all of our blog darlings at DentonRC. com, but Andrew Tinker blew us away with his honesty about the liability of labeling your music “pop.” We also love that he referred to his concert piano as “a Cadillac.” That’s in terms of its sturdiness and reliability, not necessarily expense. Wanna go? All-access wristbands are $65. All-venue wristbands for single-night programming are $20; Saturday wristbands are sold out. Visit www.nx35.com. — Lucinda Breeding

Flutes and keyboard give Smith, Pulido, Nichelson, Alexander and drummer McKenzie Smith good company. And even though water-cooler chat about the album has made mention of wood nymphs and James C. Christensen paintings, Courage doesn’t come off as nostalgic, exactly. That might be due to

Midlake songwriter Tim Smith’s mythic-style language about rulers, the common man and family dysfunction. “In the Ground” could be a take on Cain and Abel, or it could be another universal story of living up to a father’s expectations. Courage isn’t derivative. It’s rock stitched into English folk. Midlake gives the form a fresh voice. In a word, Courage is moody. “With this record, I feel like it was just the influence of maybe more melancholy folk,” Pulido said. “There was that vibe that’s there with the bands that influence us [like Fairport Convention and Sandy Denny]. We didn’t want to emulate that in a

pastiche sort of way. We wanted to do something original. We wanted to evoke this kind of emotion, with the music and the lyrical motion and the surprise.” The band found a spot to record in Denton shortly after they ended the tour that supported Van Occupanther. Pulido said the group took its time writing. The process as he describes it sounds both organic and intuitive. “It wasn’t a conscious thing,” he said. “We could have made the same kind of record as Van Occupanther. But we wanted to do something different. We wanted to do something slower.” Van Occupanther was lighter

fare, even if shadows lurked at the edges of “Roscoe,” the track that made Rolling Stone’s top 500 songs of the 2000s. The drums and bass bump more, and Smith’s vocals are more buoyant. From Pulido’s descriptions of their writing and recording, the band was intentional and hyper-aware in the making of Courage.

“In recording the sounds and in the writing, we were trying to figure things out,” he said. “We were asking: What do we want this thing to sound like? We weren’t sure what we wanted to evoke at first. There was this whole process of trial and error that we tried for a while. Yeah, there were times that we just put up some mics and started playing. “Then we’d listen, and it was us then saying, ‘OK. None of that was good,’ or ‘Yeah, let’s go with that.’” LUCINDA BREEDING can be reached at 940-566-6877. Her e-mail address is cbreeding@dentonrc.com.
