t’s not all music this weekend. The 30th annual Texas Storytelling Festival unfolds this weekend — starting today with the yearly ghost story concert. The festival retains its mission — to promote storytelling as a timeless folk art with entertainment and educational values. The event includes the usual menu of workshops for experienced and beginning storytellers, music and bare-bones performance. Featured storytellers this year are Elizabeth Ellis, an award-winning teller who specializes in Appalachian-style,

Get green for St. Patty’s and head over to Walnut
So what happens if you want to get your Irish on, but you’re already wearing your wristband for 35 Denton? Step 1: Don’t fret. Step 2: Just take a detour — one measly little block away from the big festival — to the 100 block of Walnut Street. Step 3: Buy a pint, pinch a fool who forgot to wear green, and help out the Denton Kiwanis Children’s Clinic, which gets proceeds raised by the sale of concessions at St. Patrick’s Day on Walnut. The mini-fest starts at 5 p.m. (that’s an hour before 35 Denton) and ends at 11 p.m. Admission is free, and you can eat, drink and listen to music by local danger-folk balladrockers Hares on the Mountain from 6 to 7 p.m., local Irish trad outfit County Rexford from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m., and Dallas Celtic-popsters the Killdares from 9 to 10:30 p.m. A note: The Denton Kiwanis Children’s Clinic isn’t a physical clinc. It’s a network of doctors and other providers who participate in a program to bring health care to children of low-income families.

Mr. McGregor (Adrian Churchill) finds Peter Rabbit in his garden in Kathy Burks Theatre of Puppetry Arts’ “Peter Rabbit.” The Dallas Children’s Theater production runs through Easter, April 5.
Kathy Burks Theatre of Puppetry Arts is bringing a classic illustrated children’s
book to life at Dallas Children’s Theatre. The puppet company has staged The Tale of Peter Rabbit before. The returning favorite dramatizes the stories of Beatrix Potter with puppets and actors. Peter Rabbit’s mother warned her children not to go into Mr. McGregor’s garden, lest they get baked into a pie like their father. When she leaves the burrow, curiosity gets the best of little Peter, and he visits the garden. Will he escape the fate of his father and make his way back to the safety and warmth of his home? The script is adapted for the puppet stage by B. Wolf. Performances are typically about an hour long.

Back and ready to rock
35 Denton returns with broad lineup of bands, more venues and spiffier digs By Nicholas Friedman

After taking a hiatus last year, 35 Denton is back this weekend. The music festival, which takes place in the heart of downtown Denton, starts Friday night and wraps up Sunday. Hundreds of local, national and international artists will be looking to make their musical stand in the Denton cultural ecosystem. Andy Odom, 35 Denton’s director of social media, said a lot has changed in the year the fest has been gone, including construction off the Square and a cycle of new bands to follow, and organizers are prepared to shake things up again. “That’s our festival footprint, and with all of that going on we felt it was best to let them do that work and not get in the way,” Odom said of the city’s improvements to Williams Square, the downtown public parking lot where 35 Denton plants its main festival grounds. “It also gave us the opportunity to take a step back and optimize the fest in a few areas and ensure its sustainability.” Part of this plan involved getting businesses new and old on board for 2015. Some investors departed from the event after 2013. Odom said the new interest and returning sponsors show festival organizers that the community was ready for more. Partner sponsors for the festival include Prekindle, KKXT-FM (91.7) and Denton Municipal Electric. “We had a few big sponsors renew with us and even take a bigger role,” Odom said. “Many smaller, local sponsors have stepped

talent, including new venues West Oak Coffee Bar, Harvest House, Service Industry and the Patterson-Appleton Center for the Visual Arts. “I think our booking team has always

Returning venues include festival mainstays Banter, the LABB, Andy’s Bar, Dan’s Silverleaf, Abbey Underground, Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studios, Hailey’s Club and more, Odom said. Odom said some artists often return to play the festival, like Black James Franco, a local indie rock trio. They are just a sample of what the festival offers in its lineup, bringing acts from all over to the streets of downtown. See 35 DENTON on 11

ere are some Denton acts worth catching at 35 Denton this year, in no particular order. — Lucinda Breeding
Def Rain Ashley Cromeens has consistently turned out noteworthy music, from taking the lead vocalist post in Record Hop more than a decade ago, to the hip-hop of Neeks and to Def Rain, the electronic project she shares with Grant Ring. Her signature contralto adds to the trancey vibe of songs like “Love It When” and the slow burn of “Enemy.” (And we know Cromeens is a Dallas artist now, but she’s got deep enough roots in Denton for us to claim her forever.) 11:30 p.m. Friday at Service Industry.
Daniel Markham Influenced by inspirations as diverse as horror fiction and metal, Markham surprises as an effective indie-rock artist. His playing is polished and confident. His lyrics are hefty with the occasional wink. Markham mixes approachable tunes with red-blooded honesty and dark poetic scenarios. If he plays the fest with Ryan
The Demigs One of Denton’s best (and sometimes not-so-buzzed-about) bands has just dropped an enormous double album, Welcome to Hard Times. If you’ve heard the record, you’re acquainted with the way lead singer Chris Demiglio and guitarist Alex Hastings have grown by leaps and bounds. And if you’ve not seen the group live, do. The Demigs strip their songs bare when they play a gig. Everything is grittier, tougher and sharper. 9:30 p.m. Saturday at the LABB.
Stu Brootal One of Gitmo Music’s core MCs, Stu Brootal is not some cookie-cutter rap demigod. Rather, he takes forceful verses and choruses and sets them to a more

35 Denton The Zombies, the British band best known for the 1969 single “Time of the Season,” will be headlining the fest. “I’m very excited about the Zombies,” Odom said. The weekend also boasts sets from Austin singer-songwriter Jimmie Dale Gilmore, a member of 1970s Texas trio the Flatlanders; longtime Denton faves Slobberbone; the duo project of Carl Finch and Mike Dillon; and the Singing Bowl Lady, a.k.a. Sandee Conroy with her melodious quartz bowls. With a high-profile music event absent from the 2014 calendar, other music festivals began to bridge the gap left in 35 Denton’s absence, with Oaktopia in October and the Thin Line film fest broadening its offerings from documentaries to include music. “We couldn’t be more excited about other fests popping up over the last few years because it means great things for Denton,” Odom said. “We have the arts scene and can support them all,

and so many talented and creative people to execute them.” Oaktopia co-founder and director Matt Battaglia said he is personal fan of 35 Denton and believes the festival has helped in providing the music scene with tools to express its talent. “They’ve done so much for our music scene here and really put us on the map,” Battaglia said. “Just like we want to do, it gives them a platform to show themselves.” Battaglia said that while Oaktopia has focused on hiphop and is expanding to electronic and indie music, organizers try to balance local and national acts as best they can. “We try to be as creative as we can, but we have to bring business processes to it as well,” Battaglia said. “The creative process is sit in a room and brainstorm and then think of the logistics of pulling it off.” Odom said each festival has found its niche and there is plenty of room in Denton to support them all. “It’s not a zero-sum game, so people interested in emerging indie films and enjoy Thin Line can also enjoy indie and emerging bands at 35 Denton or Oak-
topia,” Odom said. “In the meantime, there’s the Arts & Jazz Fest, which offers a slightly different — but wholly Denton — experience. It’s all about community, not competition.” 35 Denton began as a small, unofficial Denton music showcase and party during Austin’s South by Southwest Music Festival about a decade ago. It bloomed in earnest in Denton in 2010, when it went from being a strictly bar-room festival to having two big outdoor stages. The origin of the festival was nurtured in part by music happening in rent houses all over the city. Odom said the house show scene in Denton is expanding even now, and they feed the festival in addition to being their own self-sustaining phenomenon. “It’s very cyclical in Denton due to much of the music scene being a younger crowd,” he said. “Every three to four years we see a new wave of bands pop up and grow, or sometimes move away after they finish school.” NICHOLAS FRIEDMAN can be reached at 940-5666897 and on Twitter at @NMFreed.
