enton Community Theatre is back in the contest game, competing this weekend in the state level of the American Association of Community Theatre Fest 2013. The company has mounted a one-act cutting of Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill, a musical from last season, in the fifth block of state competition in Lewisville. The company will perform at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Medical Center of Lewisville Grand Theatre, 100 N. Charles St. in Lewisville. Lady Day is based on an illegal performance by Billie Holiday at a Philadelphia tavern in 1959, four months before Holiday’s death. Director Bradley Speck revives the production with the company’s original cast — with Sherna Armstrong as Holiday and Don Roberson as her ingratiating accompanist. Denton Community Theatre is competing for a slot at the national contest with the following companies: Circle Arts Theatre of New Braunfels, Desdemona: A Play About a Handkerchief by Paula Vogel Children and Adults Theatrical Studio of Lubbock, These Spinning Lives by Melanie Marnich Hill Country Arts Foundation/Point Theatre of Ingram, Love, Loss and What I Wore by Nora and Delia Ephron Outlook Performing Arts Center of Grapevine, Spring Awakening by Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater Act 1 Scene 1 Theatre Company of Port Arthur, The Diaries of Adam and Eve based on the work by Mark Twain, adapted by David Birney Katy Visual & Performing Arts Center, Approaching Lavendar by Julie Beckett

Be green Denton pubs have ways to celebrate St. Paddy’s Day
I
f you want to get your Irish on this weekend, a few downtown venues plan to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. Dan’s Silverleaf presents Forgotten Space in “A Greenful Dead St. Patrick’s Day Experience.” We’re not sure how close the relationship between the Emerald Isle’s patron saint and a Grateful Dead tribute band could be, but the band means to strike up a jig-inspiring tune at 4 p.m. Sunday at Dan’s. Now, Hares on the Mountain has the Celtic punk-danger folk business down. If the band brings on a murder ballad, complete with poetic allusions to love affairs gone deadly, the snakes bedding in the souls of Denton no-goodniks will probably get driven out of North Texas. Hoist a pint to the pub rockers at 8 p.m. Sunday. Local Celtic band County Rexford (Rex Emerson’s side project) plays from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Abbey Inn Restaurant & Pub, 101 W.

Locust St. To qualify, annual household income must be $50,000 or less. Free. Call 940-566-2688. 10 a.m. to noon — Preschool Play and Read for children ages 3-5 and their caregivers at North Branch Library, 3020 N. Locust St. Free. Call 940-349-8752 or visit www.denton library.com. 10 a.m. to noon — Denton Poets’ Assembly meets at Emily Fowler Central Library, 502 Oakland St. Members and guests can read two poems in any form. Wanna kick out those inner serpents on St. Patrick’s Day? Make a date with danger folk pub rockers Hares on the Mountain at Dan’s Silverleaf. Hickory St. Do your duty and be Irish for the day — buy a round for the band. (We can also recommend the cottage pie, the fish and chips and a pint of Guinness if you want to keep it in theme.) Sweetwater Grill & Tavern doesn’t have any special music planned — and after sending off a successful 35 Denton run, the staff deserves the rest. But the restaurant
promises drink and food specials to pay tribute to the saint. Sweetwater is located just off the Square, at 115 S. Elm St. Dusty’s Bar, at 119 S. Elm, also reports St. Patrick’s Day drink specials. Banter Bistro will host a St. Patrick’s Day jam session from 6 to 10 p.m. Sunday — and the bar has always had Guinness on tap. — Lucinda Breeding

OPENING FRIDAY The Call A 911 operator who takes a call from an abducted teenager must confront a killer from her own past to save the girl’s life. With Halle Berry, Abigail Breslin and Morris Chestnut. Directed by Brad Anderson. Rated R, 98 minutes. — Los Angeles Times The Power of Few Spies, cops, criminals and religious conspiracists cross paths over a mysterious smuggling operation. With Christopher Walken, Christian Slater and Anthony Anderson. Written and directed by Leone Marucci. Rated R, 93 minutes. — LAT Spring Breakers (###) Harmony Korine seems to want it both ways, all day, in this super-stylized descent into a sun-baked hell where bikiniclad, gun-toting college babes serve as our guides. As writer and director, Korine wants us to be appalled and aroused, hypnotized and titillated. He wants to satirize the debauchery of girls gone wild while simultaneously reveling in it. And he pulls it off. The corruption of formerly squeaky-clean Disney superstars Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens may be Korine’s cleverest trick of all: They get to show some range, we get to gawk. But James Franco steals the whole movie away when he arrives about halfway through as a wanna-be gangster rapper named Alien. Rated R, 92 minutes. — AP
NOW PLAYING Dark Skies As an escalating series of disturbing events torments a young suburban family, the husband and wife try to stop the mysterious force targeting them. With Keri Russell, Josh Hamilton, Dakota Goyo and Kadan Rockett. Written and directed by Scott Stewart. Rated PG13, 97 minutes. — LAT Dead Man Down (#1/2) Danish director Niels Arden Oplev makes his Hollywood debut, re-teaming with Noomi Rapace (The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo) in this lifeless thriller about two lost souls bent on vengeance. Colin Farrell plays a brooding gangster, Victor, who’s infiltrated the brutal gang of Alphonse (a typically velvety Terrence Howard) to avenge the deaths of his wife and daughter. He’s joined in revenge by Beatrice (Rapace), who blackmails him into killing the drunken driver who crashed into her. Preposterous dialogue and haphazard plotting. Rated R, 118 minutes. — AP
Old tricks
‘Wonderstone’ feels like an overstretched comedy bit
By Christy Lemire AP Movie Critic
The only incredible thing about The Incredible Burt Wonderstone is that way it makes Steve Carell so thoroughly and irreparably unlikable. In a film about magic tricks, this is the most difficult feat of all. Even when Carell is playing characters who are nerdy (The 40-Year-Old Virgin) or needy (Crazy, Stupid, Love) or clueless (TV’s The Office) or just plain odd (Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy), there’s usually an inherent decency that shines through and makes him seem relatable, vulnerable, human. None of those qualities exists within Burt Wonderstone, a selfish and flashy Las Vegas magician who once ruled the Strip alongside his longtime friend and partner, Anton Marvelton (Steve Buscemi), but now finds his act has grown outdated and unpopular. Even within the confines of a comedy sketch, where he probably belongs, Burt would seem one-dimensional and underdeveloped with his hacky jokes and tacky clothes. Stretched out to feature length, the shtick becomes nearly unbearable — until of course, the movie doles out its obligatory comeuppance, followed by redemption, and goes all soft and nice. By then it’s too little, too late. Burt Wonderstone comes to us from director Don Scardino, a television veteran who’s a two-time Emmy-winner for his work on 30 Rock, and Horrible Bosses writers Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley. It has some scattered laughs, many of them courtesy of Jim Carrey as a gonzo, up-andcoming street performer with a taste for pain, clearly modeled after the Criss Angel style of stunt artistry. And there is some spark to the scenes between Carell and his Little Miss Sunshine co-star Alan Arkin as the master magician who inspired Burt as a child.
Steve Buscemi, left, and Steve Carell play longtime friends and magician partners in The Incredible Burt Wonderstone. Warner Bros. Pictures
The Incredible Burt Wonderstone Rated PG-13, 101 minutes. Opens Friday.
These small joys are few and far between in a comedy that’s mostly reliant on repetitive sights gags and increasingly
desperate one-upmanship. In theory, we’re supposed to feel for Burt because we see him being bullied in a flashback at the film’s start. The nerdy, neglected child of a hard-working single mom, Burt turned to magic for selfesteem, and found friendship with the like-minded and equally geeky Anton. Thirty years later, Burt and Anton are longtime headliners at Bally’s, going through the same bit night after night with
little inspiration. Also part of the act is their latest assistant, Jane, although Burt insists on calling her Nicole because her real name simply doesn’t matter to him. The role is a huge waste of Olivia Wilde, who’s stuck playing the supportive “girl.” It’s hard to care about how far the duo will fall or whether they can make a comeback — which is never in question — because there’s nothing for us to hold on to as an audience.

09 Seryn music comes full circle for big hall concert
Denton Time

By Aaron Claycomb For the Denton Record-Chronicle
AUSTIN — Seryn is in the midst of performing 11 concerts at this year’s South by Southwest Music and Media Conference in Austin, but the Denton band will bring its harmonic folk back home next week with a show at the University of North Texas. On March 21 at the Murchison Performing Arts Center, the band will be making a full circle from where it first began, guitarist Nathan Allen said. Seryn ventured to high mountains with soaring harmonies on its debut album, 2011’s This Is Where We Are, which led to a string of national performances. With summer-like harmonies and imagery-driven lyrics, Seryn’s music calls to mind banjos and ukuleles playing in a grassy knoll, or a church cathedral where the organ resonates off the rafters and stained glass windows. The group’s vast talents in both harmonic vocals and pulsating instrumentation are sure to be evident at the Murchison, where Allen said its sounds will resonate off the back walls.
An artistic homecoming
The band is booked in Winspear Hall, the larger of two performance spaces in the Murchison. It’s the same space where mezzosoprano Denyce Graves has sung, and where faculty member Richard DeRosa’s arrangement of Leonard Bernstein’s “America” from West Side Story was performed at the College of Music gala last year. Winspear Hall is an acoustic gem in Denton, constructed to expose sotto voce opera phrases and to make room for the massive sound of the Ardoin-Voertman Concert Organ. If Seryn fans have ever wanted to hear the band’s full sound, from organ to cymbal, this concert will be the time and place for it. “The show is kind of a return to how we got started,” Allen said. The concert will be almost entirely acoustic, with a few string players supporting. “In a lot of ways, it’s going to be an extremely raw and stripped-down performance focusing intensely on acoustics,” Allen said. Not every band gets this rare opportunity, and Allen said it’s an honor to
