ext week, Texas Woman’s University will host its third annual TWU Arts Triangle Walking Tour. “It’s not a campus tour. It’s where the arts are,” said Penny Lewis, an administrative assistant in the School of the Arts and the dance department. She said the March 25 tour is so named because the drama and theater departments are on the northwest side of the campus, across from them to the east is the dance department, and to the southwest are the music and visual arts departments — forming a triangle. rtolan, an indie folkpop all-girl band, is coming to Hailey’s on Friday as one of three New Jersey bands in the Sounds Familyre Records Showcase. Ortolan features 17-year-old singer-songwriter Stephanie Cottingham, who sings straightforward, wise-beyondher-years lyrics in a simple but mannered songbird style. She is backed up on piano, bass, drums and vocals by her sisters Lara and Brianna and sister-in-law Jill. They’ll perform songs from their recent album, Time on a String. formances and art exhibitions will be set up along the pathways between the buildings. The tour will begin in the Visual Arts Building, on the northeast corner of Texas and Oakland streets, and will feature a screen print project with artist John Hitchcock. Hitchcock and students will be producing screen prints for people to take with them. The event is geared toward

members of the community, to “let them know this is the place where art happens on this campus,” Lewis said. The tour will end with a reception in the Redbud Theater Complex. This free event will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. For more information, visit www.twu.edu/triangle, or call 940-898-2086. — Rachel Mehlhaff

Concert to include 05 long-missing waltz Denton Time On Saturday, the North Central Texas Chorale will perform the Cooke County Arts Council Scholarship Concert, featuring the Texas premiere of Harold Bauer’s “The Honeywell Waltz” — which was lost until about five years ago. Chorale member Tommie Kirksmith-Newman is the niece of Bauer, who died in 1951. As the composer’s closest heir, she was contacted by a man who wanted to publish the long-lost waltz. She decided it would make a good addition to one of the chorale’s concerts. She said her uncle was close friends with the Honeywell family, best known for their company’s thermostats, and Bauer and Mrs. Honeywell wrote the waltz, which they performed on a special occa-

sion for Mr. Honeywell. The waltz will be performed by Barbara Brady, organist and music director at First Presbyterian Church in Gainesville, and Carolyn Hook, piano accompanist for the chorale. “I have not heard it yet,” Newman said. And neither has Phil Schenk, president of the chorale. “It’s going to be interesting to hear it,” he said. Schenk said the concert will also feature seven other songs and a swing orchestra set. The concert will be at 7:30 p.m. in the Gainesville ISD Auditorium, 1201 Lindsay St. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for students. Proceeds will go toward the arts council scholarship, which is awarded to a senior in Cooke County. — Rachel Mehlhaff

In 1975, teenage girls did not play in rock bands. They did not cavort across the stage singing sexually enticing lyrics. If anything, they sang slow, syrupy love songs, just like those their parents listened to. Then along came the Runaways.

Inside Golden Triangle Mall, 2201 S. I-35E. 940-387-1957.

OPENING FRIDAY

The Runaways Rated R, 105 minutes. Opens Friday.

The Runaways, a new biopic of sorts by writer-director Floria Sigismondi, sports a potentially interesting story, but is peopled with some not-so-interesting characters. It is the story of one of the first successful female rock singers, Joan Jett (Kristin Stewart), and her band, the Runaways, which began life with Cherie Currie (Dakota Fanning) as their lead singer. During the course of the film, only Jett and Currie receive much attention from Sigismondi. The other three band members stay in the background, as obscure as Jett and Currie are one-dimensional. At the first, Jett and Currie seem like little more than selfabsorbed, sullen, spoiled teens. At the end, they are selfabsorbed, sullen, spoiled teens who have experienced fame, drugs, sexual freedom and adulation. But they’re still not interesting. The Runaways follows the familiar pattern of unknowns being plucked from Los Angeles obscurity and turned into a popular commodity. Their manager, Kim Fowley (Michael Shannon), an overly energetic sort who favors bejeweled dog collars, lipstick and makeup,

Dakota Fanning, left, and Kristen Stewart play young rockers Cherie Currie and Joan Jett in The Runaways. Apparition Films

exhorts them to push the limits of their contemporary attitudes and break into the male-dominated rock world. But Sigismondi fails to elevate the story out of routine artist-drama territory. The girls go on the road, first to dives, and then on to bigger fare. Most of the backstage activities

look all too familiar. Along the way, the girls increase their tolerance for excess, so by the end, Currie has become the designated problem child, ruining the band along with her health and life. But nowhere in their odyssey do any of them make any claim to anything special beyond

their simple claim of breaking gender barriers — important, true, but not enough to hang a film on. As Jett, Stewart continues to show that at this point, she can do little more than pout. Fanning’s Currie is a little more expansive but hardly enough to elicit sympathy, or interest.

The Bounty Hunter (##) Formulaic romantic comedy about an ex-policeman-turned-bounty hunter (Gerard Butler) who must find and bring back his journalist ex-wife (Jennifer Aniston). But she’s on the trail of finding a possible murderer. Filled with aimless chases and pursuits, while the spare laughs are broad and forced. And the two leads seem chemistry-less. Routine fare. Rated PG-13, 110 minutes. — Boo Allen Diary of a Wimpy Kid (##1/2) This mildly amusing, strictly-for-kids comedy based on Jeff Kinney’s illustrated novel sees wimpy yet wise-cracking Greg Heffley (Zachary Gordon) struggling through his first days in middle school. Kinney’s stick figures (sometimes) come to life to illustrate Greg’s clueless parents (Rachael Harris and Steve Zahn) and his obnoxious brother. Rated PG, 120 minutes. — B.A. Mother (###) Constantly changing film from Korean director Joon-ho Bong (The Host) slides among drama, black comedy, mystery and unexpected violence. The titular mother (Hye-ja Kim) sees her slowthinking, 20-something son accused of murder. Her instincts kick in, showing what a mother will do to save her offspring. Successful mix of moods and genres renders a compelling tale. Rated R, 128 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — B.A. Repo Men In this futuristic thriller, a man struggles to make payments on his artificial heart and has to go on the run before the organ is repossessed. With Jude Law, Liev Schreiber and Forest Whitaker. Rated R, 111 minutes.

NOW PLAYING Alice in Wonderland Johnny Depp is the Mad Hatter in Tim Burton’s take on the Lewis Carroll adventures of a girl who goes through the looking glass. With Anne Hathaway and Helena Bonham-Carter. Also showing in 3-D. Rated PG, 109 minutes. — The Associated Press Brooklyn’s Finest During seven fateful days, three officers (Richard Gere, Ethan Hawke and Don Cheadle) find themselves swept away by the

violence and corruption of Brooklyn’s gritty 65th Precinct and its most treacherous criminals. Directed by Antoine Fuqua (Training Day). Rated R, 132 minutes. The Crazies (##1/2) In this remake of George Romero’s 1973 sci-fi schlock, a small Iowa town is hit with a deadly virus when a chemical transport airplane goes down nearby. When everyone in town starts acting, well, crazy, government troops invade, killing everyone infected. The sheriff (Timothy Olyphant) and his wife (Radha Mitchell) flee, making for a succession of consistently nerve wracking and violent scenes.

Entertaining enough genre flick. Rated R, 101 minutes. — B.A. Crazy Heart (###) Jeff Bridges offers a stunning performance in an otherwise contrived character study about the redemption of a washedup country music star addicted to booze and women, and who finds himself alone and bankrupt — both financially and creatively. Things improve when he meets a journalist (Maggie Gyllenhaal) with a young son, but his vices get in the way. While the story takes a familiar arc, Bridges and a cool soundtrack make it worthwhile. Rated R, 111 minutes. — Todd Jorgenson The Ghost Writer (###) Ewan McGregor stars as the title character, a for-hire writer brought in to work on the memoirs of England’s most recent prime minister (Pierce

Brosnan). The writer finds himself in potential danger, while many other nefarious plots and diversions play out in Roman Polanski’s entertaining rendering of Robert Harris’ novel and screenplay. Rated PG-13, 128 minutes. — B.A. Green Zone (###) In this latest Iraq war movie that the public will ignore, Matt Damon plays a chief warrant officer searching for weapons of mass destruction. Instead, he finds himself embroiled in Iraqi military intrigue and an American governmental cover-up. Director Paul Greengrass renders his trademark nonstop, chaotic violence. With Amy Ryan, Greg Kinnear and Brendan Gleeson. Rated R, 115 minutes. — B.A. Our Family Wedding (#) Three years ago, Forest Whitaker won an

Oscar. Here, he's dry-humped by a goat. Whitaker and Carlos Mencia play squabbling fathers who are forced to find common ground when they discover their children (Lance Gross and America Ferrera) are engaged. The wedding plans set off a series of cultural misunderstandings between the families, depicted with a stereotypical mix of flat one-liners and tasteless slapstick gags. And it all winds up just as you'd imagine. Directed by Rick Famuyiwa (Brown Sugar). Rated PG-13, 101 minutes. — T.J.

P

rotocol 47, a Denton filmmaker’s short film about the aftermath of a scientific experiment gone wrong, will screen tonight at Studio Movie Grill in Lewisville. Director Valentina Vladi, a student at MediaTech Institute in Irving, made Protocol 47 along with other students as part of her final project.

Shutter Island (###1/2) Leonardo DiCaprio stars as a U.S. marshal in 1954 who travels to the mysterious Shutter Island in Boston Harbor to investigate the disappearance of an inmate at a mental hospital, run by a pair of seemingly deceitful doctors (Ben Kingsley and Max Von Sydow). From Dennis Lehane’s novel, director Martin Scorsese renders an appropriately creepy film filled with oddballs, lurking danger and unsettling twists. With Mark Ruffalo and Patricia Clark son. Rated R, 138 minutes. — B.A.

The storyline, based on a concept by student Anthony Chai, traces the accidental release of radiation into a Vladi building, which causes different reactions in the characters, Vladi said. Military personnel watching the people from a distant control facility quarantine the building and decide what to do with the survivors. The director said some scenes were shot at the old

Nike missile base in Denton. Vladi, 27, said the idea was to show usual people in an unusual situation. “I like when people react in new circumstances, she said. Vladi and other students would like to make it into a feature film in the future, but for now, Protocol 47 is a 30-minute film. Free screenings will be at 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. at Studio Movie Grill, 1600 S. Stemmons Freeway in Lewisville. For more information, visit www.protocol47.com — Rachel Mehlhaff

Students look for the story behind works of art

Sofia Batt, 9, likes Amanda Jaffe’s ceramic piece Kayak for Eddie best out of all of “Materials: Hard & Soft.” Sofia said she thinks the work tells a story of how good is always with us, even if the waves are rough.

he Denton RecordChronicle recently invited four children in the Denton school district to tour “Materials: Hard & Soft” at the Center for the Visual Arts. The exhibition is a yearly show and a contemporary American craft contest. Craft is a form of art in which objects that once had practical use are stylized and decorative. After the students toured the Meadows Gallery, they were invited to pick their favorite art and tell the story behind the art, in their own words.

Karissa Chesky, 9, believes that artist Adrienne Sloane’s knitted work in “Materials: Hard & Soft” tells the story of a cloud that breaks into rain over the ocean — or a pond or lake — where the water makes ripples on the water’s surface.

MATERIALS: HARD & SOFT What: American craft exhibition presented by the Greater Denton Arts Council When: Exhibit runs through April 1. Gallery hours are 1 to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. Where: Meadows Gallery at the Center for the Visual Arts, 400 E. Hickory St. Details: Admission is free. Families and teachers can set up docent-led tours by calling 940-382-2787. On the Web: www.dentonarts.com

Jacob Gomez, 9 Family: Gabe, father; Suzanne, mother; Ben and Josh, younger brothers School: Nelson Elementary School, fourth grade Favorite work of art: Little Boys Leave Small Impressions, Fat Men Leave Big Indentations, mixed media, by Michael Stephen A word on the art: Stephen pulled unrelated

objects together to make a strange and funny work of art. A blue neon line recalls a mushroom cloud, with a smaller red neon circuit running through it. A pull chain hangs from the work, and a bright red hand gives the thumbs-up sign. The story of the piece: “I don’t know what happened here. Yeah, I want to touch it. All of it,” Jacob said. “I want to

pull that string [points to a string that looks like it might turn off the lights] and maybe touch that [points to a red mailbox flag] and maybe touch that hand. My favorite thing about this is the red light. I’d be the little boy [in the title] because I like being littler and red’s my favorite color. I think the hand could be a doorknob.”

Family: Chris, father; Aimi, mother; Lilia, younger sister; Kason, younger brother School: W.S. Ryan Elementary School, fourth grade Favorite work of art: Sea Change, knit cotton, by Adrienne Sloane A word on the art: Sloane knitted a single piece — moving from white to deep blue

— to be hung on a wall in a wavy pattern, with ends streaming down the wall into pool-like patterns. The story of the piece: “It starts kind of like rain,” Karissa said. “It could be the waves crashing, like it was a thunderstorm, but out in the ocean. It makes me kind of relaxed. Blue is kind of my favorite color — it makes me

calm. It’s not like this big crazy piece of art. The stuff at the bottom are kind of like ripples in the pond or the lake.” The artist says: “By moving the context of knitting, long defined by the human form, from clothing geometry to sculpture, knitting becomes a medium with a link to a powerful fiber tradition and history.”

Lily Snider, 7, thinks artist Aleksandra Vali’s Seeds of Life and Lust tells the story of how humans got fog.

Lily Snider, 7 Family: Sharla Snider and Tracy Oliphant, mothers School: Houston Elementary School, second grade. Favorite work of art: Seeds of Life and Lust, silver, wax (for salt) and cubic zirconium, by Aleksandra Vali A word on the art: What looks like a silver seed pod —

about the size of a small grapefruit — has split open. Rough white grains spill from the cracks, as do diamond-like objects. The story of the piece: “It’s fallen from the sky, and this is where it made fog,” Lily said. “It broke open and fog came out, but because of the crystals, it made it real heavy, so the fog stayed down and did-

n’t go up with the clouds. This is our first fog. It doesn’t look like a seed. It looks like a raindrop. It looks like it could be magical.” The artist says: “Why do people lust only to own diamonds, when salt is vital in our lives? What if every speck of salt you touched turned into diamonds?”

Family: John, father; Flori, mother; Alejandro, older brother School: Nelson Elementary School, fourth grade Favorite work of art: Kayak for Eddie, ceramic, by Amanda Jaffe A word on the art: The piece is the size of a dinner plate. Blue waves toss an unmanned kayak filled with flowers. The story of the piece: “I just attach to blue. I like the blue water,” Sofia said. “It’s in the middle of nowhere. To me, it’s saying, like if you’re in the middle of a bad situation, good is always with you. The reason I think it’s in a bad situation

is the waves. They’re kind of bad. They are, like, tipping the boat. I thought it was in a bad storm. Usually, when people are happy sometimes, they draw flowers. They are bright and beautiful. These flowers are all different. It makes me happy.” The artist says: “In this piece, a kayak is tossed by a rough ocean. It tells the story of an experience Eddie had following the death of his mother while visiting the coast of Maine. Eddie traveled by kayak to an island in the ocean. For him, the act of paddling a kayak while mourning his mother’s death was a powerful and momentous experience.”
