Fear amped up in tale of perceived stranger danger enton’s Sundown Collaborative Theatre opens done/undone on Friday at Green Space Arts Collective. The piece is an original work by the company. Performers use music, dance and text to tell the story of six strangers who become trapped by an unseen force. As the characters struggle to understand their predicament — and to find a way out of it — suspicion mounts. The unnamed characters examine faults, past sins and fears — their own and those of each other. Company players Mary Hannah McWilliams, Lauren Moore, David Ray, Tashina Richardson, Jeremy Rodriguez and Nicholas Ross portray the hapless characters. Richardson and Ross conceived the piece for Sundown Collaborative. Doors open at 7:45 p.m. at Green Space, 529 Malone St. Performances are at 8 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday and March 27-30.

Stranded, for good Denton nonprofit is hoping a little mischief might pay off. Literally. SCRAP Denton — the School and Community Reuse Action Project — will be at Oak Street Drafthouse & Cocktail Parlor at 5 p.m. Monday with armloads of yarn and bits of knitted fabric. All locals have to do is show up, knit a bit (or use alreadyknitted bits) in anticipation for a yarn bombing escapade and show some love for the local nonprofit’s IndieGoGo fundraiser. For the uninitiated: Yarn bombing is a guerrilla campaign in which the bombers wrap anything from rocks and sticks to sign posts, bike racks and sculptures in a knitted sleeve of yarn. Or a custom sweater. The trend is popular in the winter months. All thumbs with knitting needles? Simply stitch knitted bits together with a strand of matching or clashing yarn. Or take a tutorial from a seasoned hand crafter. Not interested in yarn or yarn bombing but inclined to submit some change for a good cause? Tip back a pint at the draft house during business hours Monday; Oak Street will donate 10 percents of its proceeds to the cause. SCRAP Denton has a threefold vision: to promote creative reuse among locals; to sell donated office, craft and sewing supplies for a bargain and to lend gallery space to artists who work with mostly found or reused materials.

Dusting his boots Best makes time for a Denton set enton’s Brent Best, of Slobberbone and the Drams, doesn’t keep the busiest performance calendar — which makes his occasional local shows something of a rare treat. Best is, at heart, a rock music maker. His solo shows lay bare a voice reminiscent of Irish folkrocker Van Morrison and an ear for unfulfilled cravings rendered in slow-burn melodies. It’s that sensation of hollowed-out want-
D
ing that probably led Slobberbone to land in the alt-country bin with the Drive-By Truckers as the local band gained momentum and overseas fans between 2007 and 2009 (after the band broke up, oddly enough). Best plays Rubber Gloves on Friday with Denton’s duo RTB2 and Arkansas singer-songwriter Kevin Kerby. Doors open at 9 p.m. Music starts at about 10 p.m. Rubber Gloves is located at 411 E. Sycamore St. Cover is $5 for ages 21and up, $7 for ages 18 to 20. — Staff report

OPENING FRIDAY Big Men (★★★) Writer-director Rachel Boynton followed several people for more than four years to examine the effects of the discovery of oil in two countries. She explores how Nigeria has suffered from its oil discovery and production, but arrives on the ground floor in Ghana, where Dallas-based Kosmos Energy looks to land the country’s first big contract — that is, until problems arise. Fascinating portrayal of big money, influence, corruption and unintended consequences. Not rated, 99 minutes. At the Angelika Plano and Dallas. — Boo Allen Divergent (★★1⁄2) This latest outcast-teen-battles-The System thriller is similar enough to The Hunger Games that hardcore Katniss fans may dismiss it. But Divergent, based on Veronica Roth’s book series, is a more streamlined film, with a love story with genuine heat and deaths with genuine pathos. Tris Prior (Shailene Woodley) lives in a postwar future in the semi-ruined city of Chicago, where society still functions thanks to “factions.” When teens hit a certain age, they go through “The Test” and are told where their strengths lie. Tris is confused; empathetic but fearless, smart but earthy. Her “Test” doesn’t take. The tester (Maggie Q) tells her she’s “Divergent,” and that the other factions fear Divergents. Directed by Neil Burger (The Illusionist, Limitless). With Theo James, Kate Winslet, Tony Goldwyn and Ashley Judd. Rated PG-13, 135 minutes. — McClatchy-Tribune News Service God’s Not Dead College freshman Josh Wheaton (Shane Harper) finds his Christian faith challenged when Professor Radisson (Kevin Sorbo) demands his philosophy students disavow, in writing, the existence of God, or face a failing grade. When Josh refuses, he and Radisson come to a compromise: Josh must prove God’s existence by presenting wellresearched, intellectual arguments and evidence, then engage the professor in a head-to-head debate. With David A.R. White, Dean Cain and Duck Dynasty’s Willie and Korie Robertson. Rated PG, 113 minutes. Muppets Most Wanted (★★★) A strange sense of doom hangs over the rebooted Muppets, and it’s not from the Swedish Chef’s cooking. The Muppets (2011) may have been an

Guy Trilby (Jason Bateman) is hardly a humble winner in “Bad Words.”
One good word By Boo Allen Film Critic booa@att.net
The word facetious contains all the syllables listed alphabetically. Something inchoate is not fully formed. Fingerprints can also be known as dactylograms. These are some of the more gentle examples of wordplay found in the acerbic new comedy filled with Bad Words. With surprising aplomb, comedic actor Jason Bateman makes his directing debut in Bad Words. Bateman also takes the lead in front of the camera as leading man Guy Trilby, and he does the nearly impossible: He makes the mean-spirited Trilby likeable — or at least palatable — when his time on screen is spent doing mean things.
Bateman’s dyspeptic turn as elder speller earns all A’s And during this hour and a half of non-stop Trilby, no adults pretend to like him. They hate him. The only person who comes to know him and like him is a sheltered 10year-old boy. The driving narrative force of Bad Words rests on a single gimmick. Screenwriter Andrew Dodge then takes that twist and milks it one-dimensionally — he sets up the outrageous premise of a 40-year-old man who uses loophole to compete in spelling bees for schoolchildren. Once that twist is established, Trilby revels in his machinations for the rest of the movie, enjoying in the
abuse hurled at him by parents and even the young contestants. Trilby waltzes through competitions and confrontations with a bad word for everyone, particularly Jenny Widgeon (a hilarious Kathryn Hahn), a journalist who follows him around hoping for his story but settling for sex. Widgeon tries to uncover the motive behind Trilby’s actions, something that viewers might also question. When the explanation finally comes, it makes sense. Had it been divulged earlier, Bad Words would be a lesser movie. Trilby maintains a stoic,

hard-edged demeanor throughout, only breaking character when worn down by Chaitanya Chopra, a fellow competitor who clamors for friendship, any friendship, even with a 40year-old curmudgeon. Rohan Chand, a precocious scenestealer, turns in a touching performance as Chopra, a mournful, neglected child with pushy parents. Bad Words follows Bad Santa and Young Adult in their portrayals of deliciously bad people made entertaining by mordant dialogue and their utter lack of repentance — characters so bad, they’re good. Bateman never hesitates to present an awful character. In the process, Bateman has made a funny, edgy film.

iamonds. Sequins. The midnight sky. For the Denton Benefit League, all things that glitter are gold (or silver, or platinum) for the annual charity ball on March 29. This year’s theme: “Under a Starlit Sky.” The Benefit League is credited for ushering in the era of silent auctions to raise money for Denton organizations, and it’s still the only formal charity ball in the city. (Psssst. Gentlemen? The event is black tie-optional. At least one ball patron has attended the ball in a formal tartan kilt, and tuxedos are spotted.) Gowns and dresses with “bling” are in the forecast, whether the sparkle bounc-

Gobo lighting will project stars on the ceiling of Hubbard Hall at Texas Woman’s University, and the decorations — floral arrangements, antique bird cages and candles — will make each dining table an intimate setting. The ball starts with cocktails from the cash bar and moves on to a seated fourcourse dinner, followed by dancing. The ball has traditions. Pianist David K. Pierce will play in the Bob Rogers Room, named for the late Denton pianist and University of North Texas music professor who played piano at the ball for years. The Rodney Booth Band will perform jazz at the ball, and Dallas ensemble Emerald City will play radio hits past and present. The ball is one of several fundraisers the league stages. In addition to the ball, the league presents a tea on tables set and decorated by volunteers, publishes a tab-

loid magazine and sells a league cookbook. The league is also supported by corporate underwriters. League President-elect Sam Bays said the ball raises money for Denton County nonprofit agencies. Through the league’s grant program, grants are given to local nonprofits with programs dedicated to community or social service, education,
culture or local history. “I think we’d like to raise about $40,000 [through the ball and silent auction], so that we could have $235,000 grant scholarships,” Bays said. Edene Riggs, the ball chairwoman, said the league operates much like the United Way of Denton County — focusing on diligent fundraising to benefit Denton County. See BALL on 10

Ball “Like the United Way, we raise money that will benefit the community,” Riggs said. All the money raised comes
back to Denton County through the grants. Bays said the differences between the league and the local United Way are the league’s smaller budget and all-volunteer staff. The Denton Benefit League was established in 1973, and is nonpolitical, nonsectarian and
nonprofit in its policies and activities. “Last year, league members contributed 24,018 hours volunteering in the community,” Bays said. “The whole point of the league is to raise money, without any overhead, to benefit the community through our
ongoing support of nonprofit agencies.” To learn about becoming a member of the Denton Benefit League, visit www.denton benefitleague.org. LUCINDA BREEDING can be reached at 940-566-6877.

Need for Speed is loaded with beautiful cars, winding roads and racers in leather coats. Following a prison sentence for a crime he didn’t commit, mechanic and street racer Tobey Marshall (Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul, flexing his machismo) is determined to get revenge on Dino Brewster (Dominic Cooper), the man who framed him. Stuntman-turned-director Scott Waugh puts us right in the driver’s seat. With Michael Keaton, Imogen Poots, Scott Mescudi (a.k.a. Kid Cudi) and Dakota Johnson. Rated PG-13, 130 minutes. — AP The Single Moms Club Brought together by an incident at their children’s school, a group of single mothers from different walks of life bond and form a support group to help one another overcome their personal challenges. earnest and largely successful relaunch for Jim Henson’s troupe, but it also had a hangdog melancholy. Muppets Most Wanted, thankfully, soon enough dispatches the previous film’s mopey nostalgia and sets things on a more madcap course: a European caper, not unlike 1981’s (alas superior) The Great Muppet Caper. The ingredients are here: Tina Fey as a Broadway-loving Gulag guard in Soviet chic; Ty Burrell in Inspector Clouseau mode; Ricky Gervais as the comically obvious bad guy. But Muppets Most Wanted fails to whip up the kind of furry frenzy that makes the Muppets special. The Muppets instead feel upstaged by the parade of celebrity cameos (from Lady Gaga to Christoph Waltz), as if the movie is one big selfie. Rated PG, 106 minutes. — The Associated Press Stranger by the Lake (★★1⁄2) In this languorous French language film, writer-director Alain Guiraudie follows Franck (Pierre Deladonchamps), a man who regularly visits an isolated lake to meet and interact with other gay men. He seems to have found a serious connection with Michel (Christophe Paou) until a violent event upsets their reverie, as well as that of the lake’s tight-knit community. Talky yet often compelling character study. Not rated, 97 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — B.A.

NOW PLAYING The Lego Movie (★★★★) There are so many things to like about The Lego Movie: a great voice cast, clever dialogue and a handsome blend of stop-motion and CGI animation that feels lovingly retro, while still looking sharp in 21st-century 3-D. Set in a world built entirely of Legos, the story revolves around construction worker Emmet Brickowski (voice of Chris Pratt), who must join forces with a group of rebels to stop the evil Lord Business (Will Ferrell). With the voices of Morgan Freeman, Elizabeth Banks and Will Arnett. Rated PG, 94 minutes. — The Washington Post Lone Survivor (★★1⁄2) Mark Wahlberg stars in this true story of four Navy SEALS in Afghanistan in 2005 on a mission to find and eliminate a Taliban leader. When the squad is reduced to one (hence the title), he finds refuge in an unlikely place. Rated R, 121 minutes. — B.A. Mr. Peabody & Sherman (★★★1⁄2) Dreamworks Animation sets its “Wayback Machine” to the early 1960s and charmingly revives one of the most popular features of the old Rocky & Bullwinkle Show. This winning, witty and warm cartoon captures the flavor, the tone and some of snappy pace of the TV shorts about Mr. Peabody (voiced by Ty Burrell), a Nobel Prize-winning pooch who adopted Sherman (Max Charles), a 7-year-old boy. The animated details are a 3-D feast for the eyes. With Patrick Warburton, Stephen Colbert, Leslie Mann and Stanley Tucci. Rated PG, 88 minutes. — MCT Need for Speed (★★★) Based on the hit EA Entertainment racing game,
Amy Smart, Cocoa Brown and Terry Crews. Written and directed by Tyler Perry. Rated PG-13, 111 minutes. — Los Angeles Times Son of God A film portraying the life of Jesus, from birth through his preaching, crucifixion and resurrection. With Diogo Morgado, Greg Hicks and Adrian Schiller. Directed by Christopher Spencer. Rated PG-13, 138 minutes. — LAT 300: Rise of an Empire (★★★) A more visually stunning but less thrilling epic with bloodier slowmotion sword fights, this time at sea. It lacks the heroic proportions and poetry of 2006’s 300, mainly thanks to a less impressive cast and murky, forgettable script. With Sullivan Stapleton, Eva Green and Lena Headey. Directed by Noam Murro (Smart People). — MCT
