irplane enthusiasts, take note: A national tour coming to Denton includes two military craft that are the only remaining examples of their kind still flying. The Wings of Freedom Tour is a moving exhibit of some of the military’s most treasured flying machines: the Boeing B17 Flying Fortress “Nine O Nine,” a World War II heavy bomber; the Consolidated B24 Liberator “Witchcraft,” a WWII heavy bomber; and the P-51 Mustang fighter. The B-17 is one of only eight in flying condition in the United States, and the B-24J and the full dual-control P-51C Mustang are the only remaining examples of their type flying in the world. The aircraft fly into Denton Airport on Monday and will stay through Wednesday.

OPENING FRIDAY
The Croods (###) Cavemen — they’re just like us! — or so The Croods seems to be saying. The animated adventure features a strong, star-studded cast and dazzles visually in wondrously colorful, vibrant 3-D, although the script doesn’t pop off the screen quite so effectively. It’s the prehistoric era, and while her family prefers the comforting safety of hiding fearfully inside a cave, teenager Eep (voiced by Emma Stone in her usual charming rasp) longs to see what’s outside those stone walls. The themes aren’t exactly groundbreaking, but the oohs, ahhs and scattered laughs come from the various creatures the Croods discover along their journey. With the voices of Ryan Reynolds, Nicolas Cage, Catherine Keener and Cloris Leachman. Rated PG, 92 minutes. — The Associated Press Ginger and Rosa (###) In the early 1960s, two teen girls (Elle Fanning and Alice Englert) spend time together around London, mostly to avoid their fractured home lives. A longing for maturity by hanging out with the wrong adults and committing stupid actions ends up damaging the friendship. A sub-theme of the Cuban missile crisis and possible nuclear annihilation lurks in the background. With Annette Bening, Christina Hendricks and Oliver Platt. Rated PG-13, 90 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas and Cinemark West Plano. — Boo Allen Olympus Has Fallen A disgraced Secret Service agent is called back to duty when the White House is taken over by terrorists. With Gerard Butler, Morgan Freeman and Melissa Leo. Directed by Antoine Fuqua (Training Day). Rated R, 119 minutes. — Los Angeles Times
NOW PLAYING The Call A 911 operator who takes a call from an abducted teenager must confront a killer from her own past to save the girl’s life. With Halle Berry, Abigail Breslin and Morris Chestnut. Directed by Brad Anderson. Rated R, 98 minutes. — LAT Dark Skies As an escalating series of disturbing events torments a young suburban family, the husband and wife try to stop the mysterious force targeting them. With Keri Russell, Josh Hamilton, Dakota Goyo and Kadan Rockett. Written and directed by Scott Stewart. Rated PG-

K
evin Spacey is Lester Burnham and Mena Suvari is Angela Hayes in American Beauty, which won the Academy Award for best picture in 2000. The film is part of the Cinemark’s Classic Series, which screens a best picture winner each Wednesday through April 10. The drama starring Spacey and Annette Bening examines the dysfunction of a suburban family. The Burnhams’ life is set to collide with the Fitts, the troubled family next door. While Lester awakens from existential ennui thanks to an infatuation with his daughter’s friend, Angela, his daughter, Jane (Thora Birch) forges a friendship with Ricky Fitts, the boy next door. Meanwhile, Carolyn is both distracted by and devoted to the illusion of perfection. Both a farce and a tragedy, American Beauty is an unflinching look at the poverty of intimacy and imagination that hounds American material prosperity. Rated R, 122 minutes. The film will screen at 2 and 7 p.m. Wednesday at Denton’s Cinemark 14, 2825 Wind River Lane. Tickets cost $6.50 for the matinee screening, and $8.50 for the twilight screening. For reservations, visit http://bit.ly/XoNw1t. On the bill for April 3: Casablanca. — Lucinda Breeding
13, 97 minutes. — LAT Escape From Planet Earth In this animated film, a nerdy blue alien endeavors to rescue his brother, a famous astronaut, from the notoriously dangerous planet Earth. With the voices of Brendan Fraser, Sarah Jessica Parker, Jessica Alba and George Lopez. Rated PG, 89 minutes. — LAT Identity Thief (##) Identity Thief strands ordinarily enjoyable comics Melissa McCarthy and Jason Bateman in the middle of nowhere with no help for miles. Bateman’s mildmannered accounts processor, Sandy Patterson, discovers that a con artist (McCarthy) has stolen his identity and racked up thousands of dollars in charges. Sandy schleps to Florida to track down the perpetrator and drag her back to Denver to face charges. Rated R, 107 minutes. — AP The Incredible Burt Wonderstone (##) The only incredible thing here is the way this comedy makes Steve
Carell so thoroughly and irreparably unlikable. In a film about magic tricks, this is the most difficult feat of all. Carell plays Burt Wonderstone, a selfish and flashy Las Vegas magician who once ruled the Strip alongside his longtime friend and partner (Steve Buscemi), but now finds his act has grown outdated and unpopular. Even within the confines of a comedy sketch, Burt would seem one-dimensional and underdeveloped with his hacky jokes and tacky clothes. Stretched out to feature length, the shtick becomes nearly unbearable. Jim Carrey gives it his all as an up-and-coming gonzo street magician, but Olivia Wilde gets little more to do than serve as Burt’s assistant. Rated PG-13, 101 minutes. — AP Jack the Giant Slayer (###1/2) A big-budget, 3-D retelling of the Jack and the Beanstalk legend may seem like the unlikeliest pairing yet of director Bryan Singer and writer Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual
Suspects, Valkyrie), but this ends up being smart, thrilling and a whole lot of fun. It actually ends up being pleasingly old-fashioned. Shot in 3-D — rather than one of those muddled 2-D re-dos — the film looks crisp and clean. Nicholas Hoult, Eleanor Tomlinson, Stanley Tucci and Bill Nighy star. Rated PG-13, 117 minutes. — AP Oz the Great and Powerful (##1/2) This prequel aims for nostalgia in older viewers who grew up on The Wizard of Oz while simultaneously enchanting a newer, younger audience. It never really accomplishes either successfully. Director Sam Raimi also is trying to find balance between creating a big-budget, 3-D blockbuster and placing his stamp of kitschy, darkly humorous horror. The results are inconsistent. At its center is a miscast James Franco as the circus huckster who becomes the reluctant Wizard of Oz. Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz and Michelle Williams play the
three witches he meets. Rated PG, 130 minutes. — AP Safe Haven Newly arrived in a small town in North Carolina, a guarded young woman begins opening up to a widowed store owner and father of two, but soon her dark past begins to catch up with her. Based on the book by Nicholas Sparks. With Josh Duhamel, Julianne Hough and David Lyons. Directed by Lasse Hallstrom. Rated PG-13, 115 minutes. — LAT Snitch When his teenage son is wrongfully accused of a drug-distribution crime, a desperate father cuts a deal with the U.S. attorney to infiltrate a drug cartel on a risky mission. With Dwayne Johnson, Susan Sarandon and Benjamin Bratt. Directed by Ric Roman Waugh. Rated PG-13, 112 minutes. — LAT Spring Breakers (###) Harmony Korine seems to want it both ways, all day, in this super-stylized descent

The new release Admission is a comedy. But it is a serious comedy. It’s easy to enter Admission thinking it must be a kneeslapping laugh-riot, filled with broad gags and ample potty humor. Considering that it stars reigning queen of comedy Tina Fey along with Paul Rudd, the popular star of many recent romantic comedies featuring every attractive female in Hollywood, the film seems primed for high silliness and crotch shots. The comedy comes, but the twist arrives in its unexpected

traced to other sources: director Paul Weitz and Tina Fey’s reputation and persona. Fey has rarely branched outside of comedy, so that when she delivers some of her dialogue, it can be difficult to determine if the line is funny, or funny just because Fey is saying it. Weitz seems to revel in this ambivalent material, such as in his 2004 film In Good Company and 2002’s About a Boy, which deftly mixed pathos and humor and starred another popular romantic comedy actor, Hugh Grant. Weitz also directed the original American Pie, which goes to show he has bona fide com-
edy skills. Fey plays Portia Nathan, an admissions officer at Princeton University. She takes her job seriously, as well as everything else in her obsessivecompulsive, overly ordered life. When dumped by her boyfriend of 10 years, played by Michael Sheen, she makes a recruiting trip, staying with her cantankerous mother, Susannah (Lily Tomlin). At a private school, headmaster John Pressman (Rudd) introduces Portia to a precocious but underachieving student, Jeremiah (Nat Wolff ). Pressman, an old classmate of Portia’s, then

Whether Jeremiah — who’s applying to Princeton — turns out to be the son provides the hook for the film to explore its prodigious themes. A subplot involves whether Portia, knowing that the quality of mercy is not strained, will compromise her principles for him. Admission defies being pigeonholed, particularly when actors stop and deliver deadly serious speeches only to pepper them with one-liners. But such a mix gives the film its undeniable flavor.

“Collage: Denton Dance Festival” is a local tradition by now. Presented by host company Denton City Contemporary Ballet, “Collage” is precisely what its title says. In two evenings, emerging dancers share the stage with professional and semiprofessional performers. What’s meaningful about the 2013 fest this weekend is the return of a company alumna. Lisa Racina-Torre, the artistic director of Denton City Contemporary Ballet and the founder of “Collage,” has taken advantage of the event to show her students from Denton Dance Conservatory where their hard work could take them. ma and commitment could pave a young dancer’s way to a spot in a company that tours or creates dance in North Texas.
Over the years, Racina-Torre has also clued local audiences into another significant finding: The region’s dance scene has grown. And that’s with neither the fanfare nor the media support afforded to indie music in North Texas. The regional dance scene has refused to be cowed by the economic downturn, which has shuttered a number of performing arts nonprofits. Denton in particular has enjoyed a number of successful upstarts — Big Rig Dance Collective and CholoRock Dance Theatre chief among them, with GreenSpace Dance still chugging along with plenty of creative ingenuity. “Collage” is also a good time. It’s an evening to spend in the See DANCE on 10

Denton-based Simple Sparrow Dance Company is a portal for emerging choreographers and a launchpad for modern dancers who go big on the stage, but without sacrificing the subtleties of movement. The company returns to “Collage 2013: Denton Dance Festival” on Friday and Saturday at the Campus Theatre.

ABOUT THE ACCOMPANIST “Collage 2013: Denton Dance Festival” includes two guest artists: Russian ballerina Yulia Ilina and pianist Kostyantyn Travinskyy. The award-winning Ukrainian pianist moved to Denton in 2003 after accepting an invitation to study with University of North Texas College of Music piano faculty member Vladimir Viardo. Travinskyy earned his master’s degree in 2010 and is now pursuing a doctorate in piano performance. Travinskyy is a Toulouse Graduate School scholarship recipient as well as College of Music and Viardo Fellowship Foundation scholarship recipient. In addition to his competition accomplishments, the artist made his Chicago debut in the Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concert Series, which was broadcast live on the city’s classical radio station, WFMT. His orchestral performances include appearances with the Domenico Cimarosa Symphony Orchestra in Italy, the National Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine, the UNT Symphony Orchestra and the Shreveport Symphony Orchestra.
presence of people who can’t help but move when the time comes to express the silly, the soulful and the sensuous. This weekend, “Collage” brings Denton City Contemporary Ballet back to the local stage, where the dancers will speak a peculiar and provocative language that has both ballet’s regal bearing and modern dance’s unsinkable joy. Simple Sparrow Dance Company returns to the festival, bringing its blend of classically trained dancers and postmodern moves and ideas. The small but plucky company promotes new work by Dallas-Fort Worth dancers and choreographers, so freshness is a part of this group’s bag of tricks.
Also on the program: imPULSE Dance Project from Fort Worth. The small, young dance company takes modern dance out of the hall and plunges it into the the everyday environment. The company
just performed at the Out of the Loop Festival at the Water Tower Theatre in Addison. Company member Rachel Cummings is an alumna of Denton Dance Conservatory and a former member of

DancExpress, which is now Denton City Contemporary Ballet. Cummings, who has acted as the assistant artistic director of the contemporary ballet, earned her bachelor’s degree in dance from Texas Christian University. FireWalk Dance is the brainchild of North Texas choreographer and dreamer Leslie Graves. The company is anything but fussy. Graves’ mission seems to be bottling joy in buoyant bodies, then letting them play and fly when the music starts or the mood strikes. Denton City Contemporary Ballet will perform new and developing choreography — expect jazz, modern and ballet. GreenSpace Dance, a frequent stage partner with the contemporary ballet, will show off some of its latest work.
