Kiwanis clinic fundraiser brings tasty samples to UNT Coliseum

TELL US ONLINE:

t’s time for the Taste of North Texas — your chance to try everything from appetizers and entrees to beverages and desserts, all donated by local restaurateurs for a worthy cause. “People can walk the entire [University of North Texas] Coliseum concourse and sample some of the best food and drinks that Denton has to offer,” said co-chairman Zachary Tucker. “It’s a festive event with music and all kinds of food.” Tucker said that the vendors “go all out” with decorations and food preparations for the event. “As of now, we have 38 vendors coming out to showcase their talents and products,” said

Weston Haggard, the other cochairman for the event. They compete for 28 awards, such as the most unique entree, the tastiest dessert, the most elegant presentation and the most original booth. There are overall winners in three categories, including the Judges’ Award, Kids’ Choice and People’s Choice. Winners receive “bragging rights and a nice trophy or plaque,” Tucker said. The annual event is sponsored by Denton Kiwanis Club, which donates the proceeds to its Children’s Clinic. The money benefits “the families who cannot provide monetary sources for their children to get the treatment they need,”

Haggard said. UNT Athletics is also a beneficiary. “I believe we have already raised more this year than last year just with sponsorships. We are hoping to double what we donated last year,” Haggard said.

He said the fundraiser has become a tradition among many of the vendors and families who attend every year. “Taste of North Texas is a great event, and it supports a great cause,” Tucker said.

enton City Contemporary Ballet plays host to “Collage 2011: Denton Dance Festival” this weekend. The festival is also a chance for Denton audiences to see the host company before it leaves for Austria, where the students will join companies from all over the world in Young! exas Woman’s University School of the Arts invites you to “explore the space where the arts happen,” during a two-hour walking tour of the university’s Denton campus next week. On March 31, TWU drama, art and music students and faculty, and University of North Texas music students will demonstrate their talents along the way, starting at the Redbud Theater Complex. The tour ends with a free reception at the Fine Arts Building. In addition to being a showcase for the School of the Arts, the tour offers an enjoyable on-foot opportunity to see parts of the campus that are otherwise difficult to access and are particularly lovely during the springtime. The fourth annual Arts Triangle Walking Tour includes these offerings and tour stops: Feeding Ouroboros, a sound installation by UNT music composition student Jonathan Jackson that features six robotic tape recorders interacting with AM news radio stations, at the Redbud Theater Complex. Kaleidoscope, presented by TWU undergraduate dance majors Kristina Shelburn and Angie Weiss, on the front steps of Hubbard Hall. Scottish Brave Heart Pillow Fight, presented by TWU drama students and directed by professor Steven Young, under the portico of the Administration Conference Tower. A five-minute excerpt from the TWU drama production of She Stoops to Conquer, presented by Young and two actors, in the garden space on the west side of the Arts and Sciences Building. Under the Benign Sky, a performance installation by guest artist D. Chase Angier, artistic director of Angier Performance Works and a professor and director of the dance program at Alfred University in New York. The audience will watch a group of

ight Boy Theatre, another emerging and busy Denton theater company, closes its short-play festival this weekend. Feast of Plays (Sloppy Seconds) features four short plays by local playwrights: Space-Time Discontinuum by L.J. Chandler and Kevin Wickersham; Those Men and Their Amazing Superpowers by Bryan Patrick; Shades of Grey by Melanie

Bryn Welch; and Nobody’s Guilty (How the West Was Invested) by Chazzwick. The short-play festival, a phenomenon nudged along by former artistic director Joshua Scott Hancock, is a mix of comedy and drama — of both the absurd and conventional sorts. Welch, a Texas Woman’s University

yan Cortez and Max Brown give Facebook the credit for Jurassic Park: The Musical. The idea came up as a joke in a status update on the social networking website. “That was the original inspiration,” Brown said. “And then I wrote this little thing about it on a forum, and Ryan was like, ‘No, you really should do something with this.’ It pretty much went from there.”

R

Cortez and Brown are already friends and colleagues, thanks to their indie-pop dance band, Savage and the Big Beat. “What we do as musicians already tends toward [musicals] as it is, so it wasn’t really much of a stretch,” Cortez said. The duo said the musical, a parody based on the Michael Crichton novel-

undown Collaborative Theatre has never skirted violence or desire in its young but busy life. The young company dives headfirst into both lust and bloodshed in Diana Son’s Stop Kiss. Son’s television work likely paved the way for this play about identity, vulnerability and homophobia. As a writer and executive producer of Law & Order: Criminal Intent,

Feast theater education student, said her play is perhaps the most dramatic. Shades of Grey is the story of a famous, flamboyantly gay artist who is having an affair with his model — a woman. A tragedy forces the artist to face his fears and his sexuality. “The original story was something I started in high school,” said Welch, a graduate of Ryan High School and the daughter of local theater mavens Dennis and Kyla Welch. “I had fantasies about making it a novel. To turn it from a novel to a full-length play, it would have been three acts. Making it a short play is similar to writing a short story. You have to condense your story and hit all your main points.” Welch said her script leans toward melodrama. “I’m having to work really hard, and keep the actors from overplaying it,” she said. The festival is a compact survey of Denton’s vital theater scene. In one evening, audiences will see just how the established community theater scene in Denton has helped develop new work, fresh venues and young literary voices. Jurassic turned-Steven Spielberg blockbuster, has roots in good oldfashioned fandom. Both Brown and Cortez profess a love for the unlikely story of a scientist who clones Jurassic-era dinosaurs from genetic material, then plans to open a theme park rumbling with live dinosaurs on an isolated, highsecurity island. The story is a cautionary tale, wagging a finger at scientists who let their god complexes run away with them. It’s also a Hollywood takedown of American-style corporate greed. Disaster strikes when the scientist invites his grandchildren to attend a preview tour of the amusement park. The power fails, and the dinosaurs start hunting the humans. “We’re huge fans of the movie and the book,” Brown said. “Writing the songs actually wasn’t that hard. The music was done pretty quickly.” Cortez said drafting the script, a mix of dialogue from the 1993 film and the creators’ own work, took longer to write. “We knew it was going to be important to keep some of the famous lines from the movie — lines like, ‘Hold on to your butts!’ We knew which ones had to be in there,” Brown said. Brown and Cortez said as much as they like the book and the first film (the film spawned two sequels), they knew the

story was “ripe for parody.” In the musical, a costumed cast — including actors in cartoonish dinosaur suits — play out the story of doom and terror with just a handful of props and set pieces. Musical numbers carry the players through the story, with enough liberties to elicit guffaws from the audience. True to the musical theater convention, the songs reflect the temperament and posture of the characters, all of whom are scripted to be played “over the top,” Cortez said. “The characters who are more reserved, their songs are more like ballads, and, for example, Dr. Ian Malcolm, the guy who wears all black and is a badass, his music is pretty much rock and roll. The T-rex has this big scary rock and roll,” Brown said. “The T-rex sings about wanting to wipe out the human race.” Cortez said he and Brown conceived the musical as an entire production. Once it was finished, they recruited performers. “I wasn’t sure what to expect,” Cortez said. “We knew that there were a lot of people who really love Jurassic Park, but I’d say I was expecting a third of the audience we got when we first did it. I wasn’t expecting 400 people to show up.”

OPENING FRIDAY

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules Wimpy Greg Heffley (Zachary Gordon), now in seventh grade, thinks he has it all together — which only makes his older brother, Rodrick (Devon Bostick), eager to cut him down to size. Rated PG, 93 minutes. Kill the Irishman (##) Cliched chronicle of the true-life story surrounding Danny Greene (Ray Stevenson), an Irish tough guy in Cleveland during the 1970s who turns from union boss to notorious Mafia cohort, but who is best known for surviving numerous assassination attempts by his many enemies. Stevenson has a physical presence but isn’t given much to work with in a generic script from director Jonathan Hensleigh (The Punisher). Also stars Val Kilmer and Vincent D’Onofrio. Rated R, 106 minutes. At the Magnolia in Dallas. — Todd Jorgenson Sucker Punch Babydoll (Emily Browning), a young woman who’s been institutionalized against her will, retreats to a fantasy world where she is free to go wherever her mind takes her. Determined to fight for real freedom, she finds four women to join together and try to escape the terrible fate that awaits them. Written and directed by Zack Snyder (Watchmen, 300). Rated PG13, 120 minutes. We Are Who We Are (###) Bizarre low-budget horror film from rookie Mexican director Jorge Michel Grau follows a family of low-income cannibals from Mexico City who must fend for themselves after the patriarch suddenly dies. The search for food takes some grisly turns. The pace might be too deliberate for mainstream gore aficionados, but the film has a welcome sense of dark humor and a provocative social commentary about class structure to compensate for an uneven script. Not rated, 89 minutes. At the Texas Theatre in Dallas. — T.J.

lent wrestler and the school team’s possible savior. McCarthy cogently defines the necessities and contradictions in Mike’s competing obligations, even if the tidying up of these burdens wraps up a little too neatly in the end. Much of the persuasiveness of Win Win comes from an ensemble cast entrusted with making the conflicting demands believable. Giamatti always looks best in these put-upon roles. Amy Ryan, whose immense talent has been increasingly recognized, persuades and convinces in what could have been a throwaway role. DR. Director Neil Burger (The Illusionist) gives the film some visual flair, and the premise holds up well if it’s not taken too seriously. Also stars Robert De Niro. Rated PG-13, 104 minutes. — T.J.

he title Win Win is ironic. The only person in the comedy-drama who believes all have won is the character who’s ignorant of how much damage he has caused. We all know someone like Mike Flaherty (Paul Giamatti), the central character in writerdirector Thomas McCarthy’s story. These people, like Mike, blithely travel through life believing they can make things right, even when ignoring others’ actual needs and desires. They know what’s best. For Mike, only when facing personal and professional disaster does he comprehend both

the consequences of and the limitations of his selfish approach. McCarthy deftly examines this obtuse altruism, with its unforeseen yet malignant ripple effects. Mike Flaherty practices law, but not successfully. He also serves as an assistant high school wrestling coach for the inept squad in his hometown of New Providence, N.J. He and

wife Jackie (Amy Ryan) have two small daughters, many bills and a bleak future. When confronted with an opportunity to draw money from the state to act as guardian to his aging client Leo (Burt Young), Mike takes the money. He then sticks Leo in a facility but still pockets the money. About the time Mike rationalizes away his putting Leo away, a wild card arrives in Kyle (newcomer Alex Shaffer), Leo’s teenage grandson from Ohio who ran away from his drugaddled mother (Melanie Lynskey). From there, McCarthy orchestrates his drama. Mike juggles Leo and Kyle — the latter turning out to be an excel-

With Aaron Eckhart, Michelle Rodriguez, Ramon Rodriguez, Bridget Moynahan, Ne-Yo and Michael Pena. Rated PG-13, 116 minutes. — LAT Beastly (##) This predictable rendering of Beauty and the Beast,

thrust into a contemporary high school setting, seems ready-made to pacify the Twilight crowd. The story has an arrogant snob (Alex Pettyfer) turned into a monstrous recluse by a spell that can only be broken if he finds true love. Then he notices a shy but pretty girl (Vanessa Hudgens) who is able to see past his scarred body and reach his heart. That should teach him a thing or two about being so shallow

and conceited. Rated PG-13, 95 minutes. — T.J.
