Dance instructor and nonprofit dance company director Lisa Racina said it was time to retire the name of Denton City Contemporary Ballet’s annual spring show. Collage Dance Festival is out. The annual event has been made over as the Denton Dance Festival. “Every year, more dancers as well as dance companies are interested in participating,” Racina said. “So much so that the production has become a montage of primarily Dentonarea dancers and artists. There are so few opportunities for dance troupes to perform that this festival has become one of the highlights of many companies’ spring season.” The annual event has always put emerging dancers on the same stage that, moments later, will the performance zone for professionals. Companies and artists performing are: Denton City Contemporary Ballet, which has been invited to perform in Austria at the Young Tanz-
sommer Arts Festival in 2011; Denton Youth City Ballet; Green Space Arts Collective; North Central Texas College; Texas Woman’s University students Leslie Stephens and Stephan Gaeth; Jose Zamora and dancers; Brandon McGee of Houston; hip-hop dancers Christopher Koehl and Melanie Dozier; Gypsy Crane Ingram and Brandy Niccolai. The festival presents classical ballet, contemporary ballet, modern dance, jazz and hiphop. A pair of special guests, pianist Judi Rockey Bradetich and double bassist Jeff Bradetich, will accompany their daughters, Abby and Amara, who will perform their own choreography. Performances are at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Campus Theatre, 214 W. Hickory St. Tickets are $13 for adults, and $9 for students and seniors. Seating is general admission. For reservations, call 940-382-1915. — Lucinda Breeding

Art springs forward downtown O
ne of Denton’s younger gallery and studios opens its spring exhibition this weekend. A Creative Art Studio gives space to more than 20 artists — many of whom art buffs can meet during the opening reception from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the studio and gallery, 227 W. Oak St., Suite 101. The show has something for just about every taste: paintings in oil, acrylic and watercolor; stained glass; fused glass; mosaic glass; photography; pottery; wood and clay sculp-
ture; and jewelry. The opening reception also features live music by the Dana Isaac Trio — Dana and Deke Isaac and Robert Hokamp — which will cover everything from jazz to Irish music. Dana’s daughter, Tess, will join in on the fiddle for a tune or two. The group will play from 4 to 6 p.m. The Boxcar Bandits, an eclectic bluegrass outfit that recently played North by 35 Music Conferette, will perform from 6 to 8 p.m.

‘Hotel Rwanda’ hero to speak
P
aul Rusesabagina, the real-life hero portrayed in the movie Hotel Rwanda, will speak at the University of North Texas next week. His talk will start at 7:30 p.m. April 1 in the Lyceum at the University Union, one block west of Welch and West Prairie streets. Doors open at 7 p.m. As a prelude to his talk, the 2004 Oscar-nominated movie will screen at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Lyceum. Both events are free to the public. Rusesabagina, who managed a luxury hotel in the Rwandan capital, sheltered more than 1,200 people from genocide in
Paul Rusesabagina 1994, during the Rwandan civil war between members of the Tutsi and Hutu tribes. As a result of his protection, no one
who stayed at the hotel died during the genocide, which took more than 800,000 lives. In 2005, Rusesabagina founded the Hotel Rwanda Rusesabagina Foundation to provide financial assistance to women and children affected by the genocides in Rwanda and other African nations. Rusesabagina received the U.S. Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Bush in 2005. He also received Amnesty International’s Enduring Spirit award. His book, An Ordinary Man: An Autobiography, was published in 2006. — Ellen Sackett

OPENING FRIDAY City Island (###) Andy Garcia is as charming as he’s ever been in a change-of-pace role as the head of a dysfunctional family in this low-key and frequently amusing comedy. Garcia plays Vince, a corrections officer in the Bronx who is ashamed to tell his wife (Julianna Margulies) about a series of late-night acting classes that she misinterprets as infidelity, among other issues. The film’s affectionate look at its sunny setting and quirky characters helps to offset a few clumsy plot mechanics. The cast includes Emily Mortimer and Alan Arkin. Rated PG-13, 103 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — Todd Jorgenson Greenberg (##) Ben Stiller plays the title character — a whiny, unstable, self-absorbed former musician who returns from New York to his Los Angeles roots. There, he housesits for his brother, dabbles in an unlikely romance, complains constantly and behaves completely arbitrarily. Another Noah Baumbach navel-gazing character study filled with unlikable, angst-ridden people. Rated R, 107 minutes. At the Magnolia. — Boo Allen Hot Tub Time Machine After a night of drinking, a group of best friends (John Cusack, Rob Corddry, Craig Robinson and Clark Duke) wake up, heads pounding, in the year 1986. Rated R. How to Train Your Dragon (###) The latest computer-generated, 3-D animated adventure is set in the world of Vikings and dragons, where a teenage outcast trains to become a dragon slayer like his demanding father, but instead befriends the most vicious of all dragons, something forbidden in his village. There are lessons to be learned about peace and tolerance, but youngsters will most appreciate the colorful dragons and the flying sequences that stand out in the 3-D format. Meanwhile, adults will find enough breezy humor to pass the time. Rated PG, 97 minutes. — T.J. Mine (###) Animal lovers will have the largest emotional response to this documentary, which takes a unique angle on the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina by examining the efforts to rescue stranded pets in New Orleans and reunite them with their owners. There are the expected moments of both hope and tragedy, along with a critical look at govern-

Amanda Seyfried makes eyes in her title role in the thriller Chloe.
What’s French for lame? By Todd Jorgenson It’s no coincidence that the latest effort from Canadian director Atom Egoyan feels more than a little French, and a little familiar. The drama Chloe is based on the 2004 film Nathalie, which featured Gerard Depardieu and Fanny Ardant as a middleaged couple whose lives are thrown into turmoil by a young interloper. This remake features more high-profile names in its cast, with Julianne Moore taking the role of a frustrated gynecologist who suspects her professor husband (Liam Neeson) is cheating. But instead of confronting him, she hires a prostitute (Amanda Seyfried in the title role) to flirt with him, then report back to her, to confirm whether those suspicions are correct. Naturally, the plan
backfires, and soon Chloe has cast a sort of alluring spell over the entire family, including the couple’s rebellious teenage son (Max Thieriot). Along the way, what begins as a domestic drama about a disintegrating marriage veers into an erotic thriller with one bedroom romp after another, and starts to slide downhill from a logic standpoint about halfway through. Egoyan (The Sweet Hereafter, Adoration) is working without the benefit of his own script here for one of the few times in his career (this script comes
from Secretary screenwriter Erin Cressida Wilson). Although Egoyan has dealt with themes such as emotional detachment and sexual frustration before, here the dialogue fails in its quest to be profound or meaningful, and each steamy plot twist feels more contrived and absurd than the one before it. Moore and Neeson each do their best to elevate the material, and give Seyfried credit for at least trying something different in her young career with a role that’s somewhat audacious if lacking in depth. The result is a film that would probably show up on late-night cable if it weren’t for the big-name talent on both sides of the camera. TODD JORGENSON can be reached at 940-566-6871. His e-mail address is tjorgenson@ dentonrc.com.
ment rescue efforts in general. But the film's most poignant moments come from the stories about the special bond between dogs and their owners, and the complete strangers who help out. Not rated, 81 minutes. At the Fort Worth Museum of Modern Art. — T.J. Red Riding 1974, Red Riding 1980
and Red Riding 1983 (###1/2) This British trilogy — dark, bleak, crime dramas based on David Peace’s novel — deals with a series of West Yorkshire child abductions and murders over a period of 14 years. The complex plotting unfolds with multiple shady characters, both on and off the police force. Corruption, mur-
der, infidelity and more play out over a finely realized narrative peopled with an excellent cast: Paddy Considine, Peter Mullan, Mark Addy, Rebecca Hall, Sean Bean, et al. Red Riding 1974 is 102 minutes; Red Riding 1980, 93 minutes; and Red Riding 1983, 100 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — B.A.

Alice in Wonderland Johnny Depp is the Mad Hatter in Tim Burton’s take on the Lewis Carroll adventures of a girl who goes through the looking glass. With Anne Hathaway as the White Queen, Helena BonhamCarter as the Red Queen and Mia Wasikowska as Alice. Also showing in 3-D. Rated PG, 109 minutes. — The Associated Press The Bounty Hunter (##) Formulaic romantic comedy about an ex-policeman-turned-bounty hunter (Gerard Butler) who must find and bring back his journalist ex-wife (Jennifer Aniston). But she’s on the trail of finding a possible murderer. Filled with aimless chases and pursuits, while the spare laughs are broad and forced. And the two leads seem chemistry-less. Routine fare. Rated PG-13, 110 minutes. — B.A. Brooklyn’s Finest During seven fateful days, three officers (Richard Gere, Ethan Hawke and Don Cheadle) find themselves swept away by the violence and corruption of Brooklyn’s gritty 65th Precinct and its most treacherous criminals. Rated R, 132 minutes. Cop Out A stolen baseball card sets two detectives (Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan) on the path of a memorabilia-obsessed mobster. Directed by Kevin Smith. — AP Diary of a Wimpy Kid (##1/2) This mildly amusing, strictly-for-kids comedy based on Jeff Kinney’s illustrated novel sees wimpy yet wise-cracking Greg Heffley (Zachary Gordon) struggling through his first days in middle school. Kinney’s stick figures (sometimes) come to life to illustrate Greg’s clueless parents (Rachael Harris and Steve Zahn) and his obnoxious brother. Rated PG, 120 minutes. — B.A. Green Zone (###) In this latest Iraq war movie that the public will ignore, Matt Damon plays a chief warrant officer searching for weapons of mass destruction. Instead, he finds himself embroiled in Iraqi military intrigue and an American governmental cover-up. Director Paul Greengrass renders his trademark nonstop, chaotic violence. With Amy Ryan, Greg Kinnear and Brendan Gleeson. Rated R, 115 minutes. — B.A. Our Family Wedding (#) Three years ago, Forest Whitaker won an Oscar. Here, he's dry-humped by a goat. Whitaker and Carlos Mencia play squabbling fathers who are forced to find common ground when they discover their children (Lance Gross and America Ferrera) are engaged. The wedding plans set off a series of cultural misunderstandings between the families, depicted with a stereotypical mix of flat one-liners and tasteless slapstick gags. Rated PG-13, 101 minutes. — T.J. Repo Men In this futuristic thriller, a man struggles to make payments on his artificial heart and has to go on the run before the organ is repossessed. With Jude Law, Liev Schreiber and Forest Whitaker. Rated R, 111 minutes.

ltra Xtra Arts Mix, an ultrahip urban party for the arts, is being held from 7 to 11 p.m. Friday at the Center for the Visual Arts, 400 E. Hickory St. This year’s annual Greater Denton Arts Council fundraiser has a “futuristic” theme that combines music, dance, art and drama.

The experience “will be very interactive,” said John Riegelman, facilities manager for the Center for the Visual Arts. “It’s so cutting-edge as far as the music goes, the projection art, the film. Everybody gets something different out of it.” To get into the groove, Lisa Bush, a.k.a. DJ Wild in the Streets, will play tracks from the 1950s and ’60s to the present, so plan to get down to some garage, soul, funk, lounge, girl groups, freak-beat and indie-pop. Wild in the Streets has been nominated four times for a Dallas Observer Music Award as Best DJ. Two Denton indie folk-rock faves will entertain the Ultra Xtra crowd with live music: Americana singer-songwriter Doug Burr and the fresh new band Seryn. Burr will perform original material from his latest album, which should be released any day now, as well as tunes from his three available See ULTRA XTRA on 10A Jennifer Harlan stands near a light installation at the Center for the Visual Arts in Denton during last year’s Ultra Xtra Arts Mix fundraiser. CDs. The Observer named Burr’s 2007 On Promenade one of the best area album releases of the decade. Seryn is made up of five musicians from Denton whose musical vision came together barely one year ago. Seryn’s recent performance at the North by 35 Music Conferette drew a standing room-only crowd, and the band went into the studio last month to record its much-anticipated first album. Both Burr and Seryn recently performed at Denton’s NX35 and the South by Southwest music festival in Austin. Also appearing at Ultra Xtra will be Texas Woman’s University’s Dance Lab, a group of seven dancers committed to improvisational, experimental dance that collaborates with musicians and performs in alternative local venues. “We will be performing a lively sci-fi themed fashion show, and two other improvisational dances, one involving verbal sci-fi cues, like ‘robot,’ ‘spaceship,’ etc., that trigger the dancers to perform related movement ideas,” said Lily

Sloan, a graduate student in the TWU Department of Dance. Steven Young, a drama professor at TWU, is coordinating this year’s theatrical feature by Sci-Phy Psycho Theater. The audience is invited to participate in the show, which will be “a futuristic bio-tech shopping event,” Young said. Artists representing DallasFort Worth area schools, including TWU, the University of North Texas, Southern Methodist University and Texas Christian University will contribute a variety of interactive and new media artwork. Three short films will be shown twice during the evening, beginning at 7 p.m. and again at 8:30 p.m.: Apogee, an animated history of the Apollo moon landing program of the 1960s with visuals and actual NASA photographs taken from the Apollo missions; Clandestine, a creepy, semi-fictitious documentary that delves into the history of spy radio broadcasts and the evil doings of a man seen through the eyes of his son; and Science Gone Wild, a silly blast from the past — a compilation of clips from science-fiction and government “scare” films of the 1950s and ’60s.
Attendees will be eligible to enter a drawing for prizes including gift certificates for a night’s stay at Wildwood Inn and for several restaurants, including the Greenhouse Restaurant, Applebee’s and
