Agency to host a cleanup day for city R

esidents can neaten up their patch of Denton or help tidy up someone else’s between 9 a.m. and 1p.m. Saturday, when Keep Denton Beautiful dispatches troops of litterpicker-uppers for the Great American Cleanup.

Anyone who has not regis-

tered should report to the Denton Civic Center, 321 E. McKinney St., for site assignments and supplies at 9 a.m. Saturday. Volunteers will clean up their sites from 9 to 11 a.m.

The network of cleanups will end with a volunteer party and environmental fair from 11

a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Denton Civic Center. Volunteers can enjoy a free lunch, live music, kids’ bounce house, environmental activities and door prizes.

In conjunction with the Great American Cleanup, the Denton Solid Waste and Recy-

cling Department will have a free disposal event for Denton residents who provide proof of residency. Hours will be 7 a.m. to noon at the landfill, 1527 S. Mayhill Road.

Heathens’ fourth album a snapshot of uncertain times A

ustin quartet Band of Heathens hasn’t worn out the band’s fourth studio album, Sunday Morning Record. The group will play tunes from the record, and older material, too, on Tuesday night at Dan’s Silverleaf, 103 Industrial St. In 11 songs, Band of Heathens eases into the well-worn seat of indie-folk, seasoning the lot with Red Dirt twang without compromising the record’s rock and roll posture.

“Sunday Morning Record was born in the midst of change,” said one of the Heathens’ founding guitarist and singers Gordy Quist. “Life changes, lineup changes, geographic changes. It was a roller coaster of a year, but that change served the album well and became our muse.”

Ed Jurdi, the other founding guitarist and singer of the Band of Heathens, said the latest record, which is the seventh the band has produced if you count the albums made without studio help, is a snapshot of the band’s most recent upheavals.

“We set out to make a record that chronicled the journey of the band through a really difficult and uncertain time,” Jurdi said. “In the midst of all of this, Gordy and I were writing songs, starting families, moving families and trying to find a thread to hold onto with our music.”

The leadership and service group, which is part of a national organization, gives teens the means to express their emotions constructively and creatively. For the past eight years, Nunez-Janes and Sanchez collaborating with the Denton leadership and service chapter to teach a class on digital storytelling.

They are assisted by Dallasbased spoken word artists and diversity educators Will Richey and “AP” (Alejandro Perez Jr.) of DaVerse Lounge, who work across the area teaching emotional literacy to youth through poetry, music and visual art.

OPENING FRIDAY Cesar Chavez (★★★) Cesar Chavez is a Mexican-American 42, a quietly inspiring and well-acted tale of a civil rights icon whose story isn’t nearly as familiar as Jackie Robinson’s. Union organizer Chavez wasn’t a dynamic speaker or necessarily that charismatic. So it’s appropriate that director Diego Luna’s film stumbles a little with the sweeping moments in this intimate biography passed off as larger-than-life epic.

Michael Pena (End of Watch) stars as Chavez, whose struggles to unionize exploited farm workers — his long marches, his hunger strike — make for moving moments, but rarely achieve grandeur. The animated details are a 3-D feast for the eyes. With Patrick Warburton, Stephen Colbert, Leslie Mann and Stanley Tucci. Rated PG, 88 minutes. — MCT Muppets Most Wanted (★★★) A strange sense of doom hangs over the rebooted Muppets, and it’s not from the Swedish Chef’s cooking. Muppets Most Wanted, thankfully, soon enough dispatches the previous film’s mopey nostalgia and sets things on a more madcap course: a European caper, not unlike 1981’s (alas superior) The Great Muppet Caper.

Audacious adaptation

Aronofsky brings Bible chapter to life in ‘Noah’

Old Testament fury has rarely come to such spectacularly fearsome life than in Noah, Darren Aronofsky’s audacious adaptation of one of the Bible’s best-known but still enigmatic chapters.

Be warned: Anyone familiar with the 500-year-old man and his ark may need to check some of their most cherished visualizations of him at the theater door.

No cozy two-by-two images of beatific giraffes grace this Noah.

Like any good artist, Aronofsky has avoided predictable, literalist retellings of beloved Sunday school stories, inserting new characters, bringing parenthetical figures to the fore and making one of history’s most enduring and universal myths his very own.

The result is a movie that is clearly deeply respectful of its source material but also at times startlingly revisionist, a go-forbroke throwback to Hollywood biblical epics of yore that combines grandeur and grace, as well as a generous dollop of goofy overstatement. Viewers may not agree about what they’ve seen when they leave Noah. But there’s no doubt that Aronofsky has made an ambitious, serious, even visionary motion picture, whose super-sized popcorn-movie vernacular may occasionally submerge the story’s more reflective implications, but never drowns them entirely.

Appropriately enough, Aronofsky starts In the Beginning, and after a brief prologue revisiting Adam and Eve, original sin and the fatal rivalry between Cain and Abel, catches up with Noah as a boy who, by virtue of his lineage and an enchanted snakeskin bestowed on him by his father, is clearly destined for greater things. Conceived and staged like a conventional superhero origin story, Noah then finds the grown-up protagonist — played by a solemn, hauntedlooking Russell Crowe — living in Canaan alongside his wife, Naameh (Jennifer Connelly), and their sons, Ham, Shem and eventually Japeth.

arid deserts, ruthless tribal warfare and dead cities, but also supernatural wonders. When Noah begins to experience visions of the apocalyptic flood to come, Aronofsky choreographs them not as words-from-on-high messages from the divine, but as stylized, terrifying unconscious visions. Fans of the filmmaker’s work — from Requiem for a Dream and The Fountain to Black Swan — won’t be surprised to learn that he’s at his best with these fantastical, mystically inclined sequences. He’s just as evocatively expressive with the most technically challenging set pieces of the story: the arduous construction of the enormous Ark (here produced according to Biblical proportions, down to the last cubit), the arrival of the animals and that annihilating flood, which Aronofsky stages as an awesome cascade of rainstorms, geysers and terrifying waves.

Amidst such visual busyness, Crowe and Connelly deliver impressively grounded, powerful performances, with Crowe playing Noah first as a humble, di-

vinely inspired servant and, eventually, as a wild-eyed zealot, and Connelly brimming with earthy rectitude as his far more steady-eyed wife. One of the most delightful reshufflings is a central role for Noah’s ancient forebear, Methusela, played by Anthony Hopkins in a mischievous and altogether convincing turn as a white-haired figure of mystical, oracular wisdom.

So much of Noah is so good, and so impressively executed, that when discordant notes are sounded, they do so with clanging dissonance. Taking ill-advised pages from both 1950s animator Ray Harryhausen and the current big-studio predilection for comic-book movies and young-adult teen romances, Aronofsky creates characters and story lines that feel wildly out of place — not because they don’t appear in Scripture, but because they’re so at odds with the often brilliant aesthetic language that animates the rest of the film. (We’ll chalk up Noah’s surprisingly sophisticated wardrobe of primitive-chic leathers and open-work knits up to artistic license.)

The most distracting of Aronofsky’s creations, by far, are the Watchers — fallen angels who roam the broken world like mournful, stiff-jointed behemoths, seemingly hewn from desert stone and resembling

rock ’em, sock ’em robots when pressed into heavy-duty smiting.

Every action film nowadays seems to wind up being Transformers and sadly, Noah is no different, especially when it comes time for a final, grandiose showdown between the Watchers and the oncoming forces of evil.

Those forces, by the way, are led by an otherwise marginal character named Tubal-cain (Ray Winstone), a bloodthirsty leader who probably hasn’t made it into most Sunday morning curricula. His role in Noah’s mission and ensuing adventure on the Ark, as well as a budding love story between Shem (Logan Lerman) and a young girl named Ila (Emily Watson), will surely give some literalists exegetical fits — not least because Tubal-cain comes to be a proxy for the kind of anti-conservationist theology that Aronofsky uses Noah to obliquely critique.

Although it’s understandable that the filmmaker wanted to make Noah a parable of environmental stewardship, for many believers the story is primarily about hearing and responding to God’s voice. Aronofsky doesn’t necessarily give that reading short shrift, but as Noah becomes increasingly doctrinaire — culminating in a bizarre, deeply troubling passage involving the Ark’s most vulner-

able pair of creatures — it’s clear that the filmmaker is far more interested in human agency. He even seems to anticipate the New Testament when Naameh pleads with her husband — ever more urgently — to reconsider his own dogmatism in favor of ideas like mercy, forgiveness and simple goodness.

Those are fascinating passages, beautifully presented by Connelly as the movie’s most steadfast moral voice. As off-putting as Noah’s juiced-up subplots and cinder-eyed Watchers can be, it’s impossible not to be impressed, engaged and moved by Aronofsky’s own passionate commitment to the Noah story, which has reportedly captivated him since he was an adolescent.

Like interpreters through the millennia, Aronofsky has taken Noah’s journey sincerely to heart, processed it through his own singular visual and moral imagination and come up with a narrative that feels deeply personal, broadly mythical and cannily commercial all at the same time. That feels just about right for Noah, which ultimately invites viewers to form their own meanings, whether they’re about sacrifice and obedience, stewardship and service or the enduring entertainment value of an epic adventure that, thousands of years on, still manages to astonish.

‘Atrium’ lends dignity to the disturbed, demented and lost

The cast of Michael Mulder’s drama Atrium look a little shell shocked and plenty tired at the end of Monday night’s rehearsal.

Atrium is that kind of play.

No punch is pulled; No soul escapes getting flayed to its messy, vulnerable essence.

Director Kim Campbell discovered the play about a year ago. She’s discovered that Mulder was a Denton resident, and a former protégé of the late Ralph Culp, who taught theater at the University of North Texas, then lent his expertise to Denton Community Theatre as an acting coach. Culp was integral in the community theater advancing in a festival of community theaters. He was an acting coach to the cast of a one-act cutting of the play Doubt: A Parable directed by Mildred A. Peveto.

Culp urged Mulder to apply for the prestigious master’s program in playwriting at Columbia University. Mulder was accepted and attended, but didn’t graduate.

“Atrium is the show that came out of his time at Columbia,” Campbell said. “We were wanting to do the show, and about this time last year, we were having trouble finding a venue.”

Performance space is a perennial problem for Denton’s established and indie theater companies, and Campbell came up short.

Polly Maynard Watson was part of the group that formed around the show last year.

“I don’t think either Kim or I were ready to shelve the project,” Watson said. “We knew we wanted to produce it. The question was where.”

Campbell went before the production board at Denton Community Theatre to pitch the project for the company’s plucky second season, a yearly grouping of about three shows inked on the calendar for the POINTBank Black Box Theatre.

Atrium brings six unmoored souls together in a commons area of an unnamed, upscale hospital for people with mental illnesses — this includes the disease of addiction. There’s Mr. Conley, the patient who’s been

Conley’s the Shakespearean fool, telling inconvenient truths in poetic riddles.

There’s Jenny, a woman not really on the mend after years of childhood sexual and emotional abuse. Polly Maynard Watson takes on the wounded woman, who appears to have a personality — an accent, posture and worldview — for each past season soiled by loathsome adults.

Sterling Gafford, who just spent months yucking it up in Music Theatre of Denton’s Spamalot, plays Lucas, an adult film

actor who has gotten so down and dirty with cocaine and other drugs that he can’t get it up. Barbara, played by Sharon Barnhill, struggles to remember the past 20 years that have been burned from her brain from electro-convulsive therapy. Estelle, played by Dena Dunn, is the most recent arrival. She’s fallen apart after a seismic marital shift.

Ron, played by Mike Stephens, is at the hospital after a suicide attempt, his last-ditch effort to end his losing battle with the ugliest demon among this crew. Like One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, not everyone comes out alive or intact.

The actors said even with the gruesome details shared by the group, the characters’ have their mysteries and unanswered questions.

“I think [Lucas] has thought too much of the loving side of him. He’s habituated it so much through sex that he can’t really get close to anyone any other way,” Gafford said. “I’ve played around with the idea of him having mommy issues. I think the cocaine mask the issues he’s had for a long time. Here, his emotional issues come out in spikes, almost.”

Atrium Barnhill can do more inventing with Barbara, a sweet, chainsmoking depressive who struggles to stay lucid. Twenty years of “shock therapy” have left Barbara a ghost.

“I drew from several people to get to Barbara,” Barnhill said.

“She’s had pretty significant memory loss, but she still remembers the emotions.”

Newton has a lot of blanks to fill in, too, as the senior resident of the group. Mr. Conley spends most of his time in the atrium hiding among potted plants, interjecting shards of answers to eternal questions. His most urgent need is to bend the hospital’s policy requiring pants in common areas.

“He’s making himself happy in his own little world,” Newton said. “I don’t think he doesn’t fight. His way is just his own.”

For Watson, Jenny is a rigorous character, alternately childlike and tough, foul-mouthed and sweet.

She sort of melds into whatever anyone wants to be, and I think she melds into who she

needs to be. She’s a pleaser. A chameleon.”

As Estelle, Dunn adopts a teaching role. Estelle has landed in a mental hospital after lashing out violently to retaliate against a vexing husband. She tries to

guide her peers — all of whom are mentally less healthy but more emotionally sound than she — through the maze of treatment and therapy. She deflects, holds in and waves away her embarrassing choices, but they tax her through unrelenting nightmares.

“The others don’t trust Estelle, other than Lucas,” Dunn said. “And why should they? She hasn’t been there very long.”

While telling everyone how to get well, Estelle sabotages herself by diving into a sexual relationship with Lucas. She mothers Ron, a gay man who douses truly grotesque appetites with booze. Ron’s story is the most difficult of the show. He represents the ultimate boogeyman, preying on the weak and trusting to sate horrible lusts.

Mulder does the near-impossible through Ron; he makes us capable of forgiving — even loving some part — of the worst brand of reprobate humanity can dream of or unleash. Audi-

ences needn’t worry. No one despises Ron more than Ron hates himself.

“I’ve found the goodness in Ron through his disgust at what he’s done, and how much he wants to stop it even if it means killing himself,” Stephens said. “I think he cares about others. He keeps a close eye on Barbara. He worries about her. I think Ron will get out of the hospital, I think he will kill himself. I think that’s the only way he can go on.”

Atrium won’t be an easy or pleasant night at the theater, but it will challenge audiences to acknowledge the frailty of the least of these — the sick, the dying and the lost. And audiences might wonder how the ensemble shrugs the cloak of suffering from their shoulders when the second act ends.

“Who says we do?” Watson asked. “We do take this out of here with us. There’s no other choice.”
