Callie (Tashina Richardson, left) and Sara (Danielle Trudeau) are surprised by their mutual attraction in Diana Son’s Stop Kiss, presented by Sundown Collaborative Theatre.
Interrupted by love S
top Kiss is the most realistic show Sundown Collaborative Theatre has produced yet this season. The drama, by Law & Order writer and executive producer Diana Son, is the story of Callie Pax, a no-nonsense New Yorker who’s lived a life free of tough decisions. It starts with a simple favor — cat-sitting for Sara, a St. Louis transplant eager to shake up her sheltered life. It doesn’t take long for the friends to discover that friendship has nudged them to a whole new precipice: love. If the stars align, love could lead to a life together. Son interrupts the women with an offstage act of violence that leaves Sara in a coma and Callie stranded with her evolving sexual identity. Stop Kiss is a step toward more traditional fare for Sundown, coming on the tail end of 4.48 Psychosis, which rooted its players in storytelling that
was based more in movement than in dialogue. Director Tiffany Hillan shepherds a small cast through the story, which is told out of sequence. “The company has dealt with the idea of love in a lot shows we’ve done,” said board member and company publicist Tashina Richardson, who took on the role of Callie. “We hadn’t done a show about lesbian love. This script was something the director was interested in exploring.” Son, true to Law & Order form, chooses a certain chastity in telling the tale of two women falling each other, something that takes both by surprise. What’s explicit are the explanations of the gay bashing that nearly kills Sara (Danielle Trudeau). Another of Son’s strengths is knocking human masks aside. Callie is the sun around which this story orbits. At first blush, Callie’s the cool New York chick

Indie theater troupe takes on NYC drama tials — with the exception of culinary scavenger hunts. “I think that Callie as a character is self-assured, but she’s really never had to make any real commitments in her life,” Richardson said. “Her college was handed to her. Her job has been handed to her. This situation she gets into is hard because she’s never really had to make hard decisions. There’s ultimately a choice she’s had to make. Both before and after the beating, she’s had to make that decision.” In the end, it’s Sara who has come to the Big Apple to find herself. It doesn’t seem to bother Sara too much if she finds herself in the arms of another woman. Sara becomes a theatrical form of collateral damage. The company closes the play this weekend at a new venue: the outdoor stage at Art Six Coffee House. — Lucinda Breeding

Link Chalon and his daughter, Katherine, team up to make music for First Friday Denton.
Folk family plays for First Friday D enton’s most underrated Americana artist will ring April in with a strum and a smile at this week’s First Friday Denton arts mixer. Link Chalon and his daughter, Katherine, will play acoustic Americana at the event, which also showcases art, much of it by local artists. The setting is the same: the ever-changing gallery at A Creative Art Studio, 227 W. Oak St. in downtown Denton. The time is the same: 7 to 9 p.m. on the first Friday of the month. The arts mixer claims the studio as a home base, but the idea is to invite patrons to visit the other hot spots on the Square.
Chalon has been performing in Denton since 1984. He composes and has been a finalist at the Kerrville Folk Festival in the “new folk category. Katherine Chalon studied violin while at Strickland Middle School and began playing guitar in seventh grade. She’s now a Denton High School student. Patrons can contribute to a community art project led by Crystal Nelson, a local artist and art teacher. Greg Conlin returns to do on-site sketch portraits; a sitting takes about 30 minutes and costs $30. hef Tim Love is running behind. His executive assistant calls to say he will be 20 minutes late. He’s on his way from Fort Worth to talk about Love Shack Denton, his latest restaurant about to open just east of the Square. For months, passers-by have peered through the windows, observing the building’s transition from barbershop to burger joint. It’s almost ready — but not quite. The 2007 Iron Chef America winner, instantly recognizable for his many television appearances on cooking and morning shows, walks through the front door without his crisp chef’s coat and signature white Stetson. Despite his busy morning, he appears relaxed in faded jeans, cowboy boots and a worn T-shirt that reveals a tattoo inked on a buff upper arm. He sits down and leans back in his chair as construction workers keep the place hopping, with sparks flying and the sound of drills and saws buzzing, and hammers pounding away. This will be Love’s third gourmet hamburger establishment by the same name, Tim Love’s Love Shack, one of several restaurants he has owned over the years that run the gamut from casual to fine dining. But this one is special. It’s Love’s first venture in his hometown. “My mom wanted me to do a restaurant in Denton — that’s the main reason I’m here. She’s excited,” says the 39-year-old culinary rock star who spent the first 18 years of his life here. “I wanted to bring something back.” See LOVE on 10

Love
Long before Love became a celebrity chef, he spent summers in Tennessee working on his father’s farm. “I’ve raised almost every vegetable under the sun growing up as a kid, and same with animals,” Love says. “I raised chickens and rabbits and lambs and goats and steers.” After Love graduated from Denton High School, he went back to Tennessee to earn double degrees in finance and marketing at the University of Knoxville. While making a little cash in various restaurant jobs, he found his calling. “I fell in love with it,” he says. “I wanted to cook for a living.” Love never went to culinary school, but he gained a solid foundation based on experience. “You learn from every ingredient you touch.” Love spent his mid-20s in Colorado, snowboarding when he wasn’t cooking for crowds. He scooped up the Taste of Breckenridge Grand Award three times and the Taste of the Mountains Award, four. He met his wife, Emilie, at the Uptown Bistro in Frisco, Colo., where he was chef. Eventually the two moved back to Texas, making their home in Fort Worth, where they now raise their three children. In 2000, Love opened Lonesome Dove in Cowtown’s historic downtown Stockyards district, once the Grand Central Station of livestock, where visitors can still witness daily cattle drives. Love, who calls himself a “huge meat guy,” made his mark serving what he calls “urban Western cuisine” — not only traditional high-end steaks, but rabbit, elk, rattlesnake, wild boar and even kangaroo.
It’s not like we have all these crazy things on the burger. It’s not a burger made with foie gras and blueberries or whatever. It’s made from really top-notch, high-quality ingredients that are all house-made.” — Tim Love
LOVE SHACK DENTON Address: 115 E. Hickory St. Phone: 940-442-6834 Hours: 11 a.m. to midnight Sunday through Thursday; 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday Opening date: early April On the Web: www.shake yourloveshack.com
Love says people often try out-of-the-ordinary meat just to say they did it. “But can I take it and turn it into something people really like?” he says. “That’s the challenge.” More than a decade since opening, Lonesome Dove is packed and critics rave; in fact, just last week The Dallas Morning News published a four-star review of Love’s upscale restaurant. Just around the corner from Lonesome Dove is the original Love Shack — all 140 square feet of it — next door to the White Elephant Saloon, which is also owned by Love. The second Love Shack is located near Fort Worth’s Trinity Park and the museum district. “We’re a different breed,” Love says. “We’re not a fastfood joint. We’re a really cool, hip, burger spot.” The concept was born out a “what the heck” situation, he says. Love wanted to offer food to White Elephant Saloon customers, and he also needed to find a way to use the leftover trim from Lonesome Dove’s popular garlic-stuffed beef tenderloin. “We have a lot of it,” Love says. “It’s expensive meat to just throw away.” It took about five months for Love to develop the perfect grind and mix for his unique burger. “We do 50 percent prime

The Love Shack’s nontraditional Dirty Love Burger includes wild boar bacon and a quail egg. brisket and then 50 percent of tenderloin,” Love says. The combination makes a “tremendous meat patty.” The Love burger itself is simple. “It’s not like we have all these crazy things on the burger,” he explains. “It’s not a burger made with foie gras and blueberries or whatever. “It’s made from really topnotch, high-quality ingredients that are all house-made,” including the pickles and the ketchup and mayonnaise that go into Love’s special Love Sauce. The Dirty Love Burger “gets a little more exciting,” topped with wild boar bacon and a quail egg. “It’s a beautiful thing,” he says. “It’s even better with a fried portobello on it. We call that the Love and the Boom Boom. It’s awesome. It’s what I eat.” The next order of business was developing fries that are “not like anybody else’s,” Love says. “We do a thin, plain french fry that gets pretty crispy. They’re different.” Love devotes a huge amount of time creating the perfect eating experience, down to the width of the tomato slice. “All of it involves the texture of
one bite,” he says. “It’s hard to develop a burger where [when] you bite into it, it still tastes the same all the way around.” The three Love Shack menus vary. The Denton menu will include chicken, fish, hot dogs, soups and salads in addition to burgers, fries and onion rings. The Denton location is the only one that will serve grilled, cured pickles. Every Love Shack serves root beer on tap and milkshakes, too. “We don’t have five shakes on the menu, we have today’s shake,” Love says. “And today’s shake could be anything.” The same fare will be served from opening to close. The lunchtime crowd will order at the counter and seat themselves, whereas after 5 p.m. diners will be served by waitstaff, and to-go orders will be available for pickup at a window on the west side. Bartenders will man a full bar and pour “fun, funky cocktails,” he says, and there will be a daily happy hour from 4 to 7 p.m. Several flat-screen TVs are mounted overhead on nearly every wall. “I’m a big sports guy. I don’t like missing any sports,” he says. But the main focal point will
be the stage flanking the east wall. “You should be able to see the music from anywhere in the restaurant,” he says. Love says he’s a big proponent of live music, and the bands will “run the gamut.” He says he wants his restaurant “to get heavily involved in the Denton music scene.” “It’s such a great music town.” Love envisioned the building to have “a spacious feel” with lots of windows and two 30foot glass garage doors. “The place is created to feel like you’re outside all the time,” he says. The walls are constructed from reclaimed farm wood from South Texas. Patio seating with two giant maple trees will shade the north side, and diners can play outdoor pingpong, washers or cornhole. Love wants to create a relaxed atmosphere where customers will want to hang out for a few hours. “The Love Shack is all about having fun,” he says. Looking around on a recent afternoon, one can see there’s still plenty to do. Construction is not quite complete. The tables and chairs are stacked on top of each other. The staff has yet to learn the art of the food preparation and will be trained by Love himself. The city still has to give its stamp of approval, and is in the process of ensuring that the building is up to code and the health department is satisfied. So when does it open? Early April, Love says, but there’s no firm commitment yet as to an exact date. “It’s got to be perfect,” he says. “My goal is for the food to be perfect, the service to be perfect, and whenever those things come together, that’s when we open.” ELLEN RITSCHER SACKETT can be reached at 940566-6845. OPENING FRIDAY Cat Run Two slackers start a private detective agency, and their first case finds them mixed up with a highclass escort embroiled in a dangerous cover-up. With Paz Vega, Christopher McDonald, Janet McTeer and Scott Mechlowicz. Written and directed by John Stockwell. Rated R. 102 minutes. In area theaters. — Los Angeles Times Hop (##) Frenetic blend of live action and animation won’t exactly start a new Easter movie trend. It follows E.B. (voiced by Russell Brand), a rabbit who is next in line to become the Easter Bunny but would rather become a drummer in Hollywood, where he disrupts the life of an unemployed slacker (James Marsden). There are some amusing sight gags and one-liners, but the script is wildly uneven and lacks comic momentum. The buddy-comedy sequences feel like a Garfield knockoff. Rated PG, 95 minutes. — Todd Jorgenson Insidious (##1/2) Low-budget haunted-house movie from director James Wan and writer Leigh Whannell (Saw) centers on a couple (Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne) that moves into a suburban house, where their young son suddenly lapses into a coma, raising the question of whether his body is being inhabited by paranormal beings. The film shows a lot of promise in the first half, generating some effective chills, before revealing an uninspired twist that leads to a predictable conclusion. Rated R, 102 minutes. — T.J. I Saw the Devil (###) Blood-andguts aficionados should see this graphic Korean thriller, which tracks a police detective who attempts to avenge the brutal murder of his pregnant fiancee by a serial killer, when he realizes that in order to kill a murderer he must take the mindset of one himself. The film drags on too long and certainly isn’t for all tastes, but director Ji-woon Kim takes an uncompromising yet darkly humorous approach to the material that should captivate genre fans. Not rated, 141 minutes. At the Texas Theatre in Dallas. — T.J.

bender. Jones must orchestrate multiple explosions, various fights and even an unlikely fledgling romance. And Ripley’s script may be too complex, and outrageous, to follow or make sense of, but it creates a compelling picture of Stevens, which eventually warrants our emotional investment. Gyllenhaal passes through an impressive array of emotions as he, in his words, “saves mankind.” And in gratuitous roles that can only be called supporting, Farmiga, Monaghan and Jeffrey Wright adequately support.
and no payoff, as the jokes feel obvious and the alien doesn’t develop much beyond a foulmouthed version of the Great Gazoo. Rated R, 104 minutes. — T.J. Sucker Punch Babydoll (Emily Browning), a young woman who’s been institutionalized against her will, retreats to a fantasy world where she is free to go wherever her mind takes her. Directed by Zack Snyder (Watchmen, 300). Rated PG13, 120 minutes.
he plot twists in director Duncan Jones’ new science-fiction puzzler Source Code are explained not as time travel, but as time “reassignment.” If that proves too difficult to grasp, it might be best to consider the advice given by one of the film’s characters: Just don’t think about it. Ben Ripley’s story and script present an original, if absurd, idea around which to base a narrative: For about eight minutes after death, the body exudes an aura, like a justturned-off light bulb. That aura rekindles the last eight minutes of life. Throw a person with the same wavelength (or whatever
it is) into the mix and that other person can then relive the first person’s last eight minutes. This magical ability allows Colter Stevens (Jake Gyllenhaal) to enter the mind of a man traveling on a Chicago commuter train about to be blown up by terrorists. Stevens himself rests inside some kind of capsule and communicates with a supervisor (Vera Farmiga) who steers him as he attempts to
uncover who placed the bomb and where, possibly avoiding detonation. As advised, just don’t think about it. But Stevens fails to accomplish his mission in eight minutes, forcing him to repeat his task several times, thereby creating an unfunny Groundhog Day-like succession of scenes. In the process, he becomes better acquainted with Christina Warren (Michelle Monaghan), a fellow traveler he would like to know better if only he had but world enough and time. Director Jones squeezes tension and suspense out of his repetitious material, having handled similar circumstances in his excellent 2009 film Moon, another science-fiction mind-
becomes the last foothold in a battle against aliens. With Aaron Eckhart, Michelle Rodriguez and Bridget Moynahan. Rated PG-13, 116 minutes. — LAT Limitless (###) Slick if scientifically silly thriller about a fledgling writer (Bradley Cooper) who gets a new source of inspiration when he takes a pill designed to expand brain power, which leads him to fame and fortune until he realizes the side effects have caused him to make
more enemies than friends. Director Neil Burger (The Illusionist) gives the film some visual flair, and the premise holds up well if it’s not taken too seriously. Also stars Robert De Niro. Rated PG-13, 104 minutes. — T.J. The Lincoln Lawyer A criminal defense attorney (Matthew McConaughey) who operates out of the back seat of a chauffeured Lincoln Town Car has his first highpaying client in years, but what appears to be a simple, lucrative case
turns into a deadly game. With Marisa Tomei and Ryan Phillippe. Rated R, 119 minutes. — LAT Paul (##) The promising pairing of writer-stars Simon Pegg and Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead) with director Greg Mottola (Superbad) is wasted with this energetic but half-baked science-fiction saga about a pair of comic book geeks who wind up on a road trip with an ill-tempered alien (voiced by Seth Rogen) trying to escape from the feds.
