onnections are woven through the fabric of our lives. Just ask Denton Chamber President Chuck Carpenter and Denton Mayor Mark Burroughs, who spend their time weaving partnerships to increase the vitality of the community. Carpenter said there are many ways the chamber reaches out and works one on one within the community for the common good, including providing informative sessions and hosting Denton County Days, an event that had 175 participants this year. “We are a non-profit organization that works with other nonprofits, public schools and city government to be able to better achieve what we need as a community,” Carpenter said. “With Denton County Days, we were able to collectively voice several opinions as one, to ask for legislation that’s most

important to our town.” The Denton chamber, along with Lewisville, Hickory Creek and Little Elm recently joined for an informative community session with Rep. Michael Burgess, R-Lewisville, to educate members and the communities on what’s to come with issues including the health care bill. “We really just work on how to put the best image of our town out there,” Carpenter said. In addition to educating its members about important issues, encouraging

community commitment is another part of the process, Carpenter said. Burroughs said without the community, there would be no image and that’s why city and chamber partnerships are so essential. “We have a very eclectic and diverse community here in Denton, and it takes representatives from each group or organization to come together, to be able to weave us together as a whole,” Burroughs said. “We can’t do it on our own.” This representation — the closeness —
he said, is what keeps Denton on the map as the most booming area of the North Texas region. “Since I was elected in 1998, the council and I have been hearing from area groups to be able to know what it is they need and want,” Burroughs said. While everyone involved doesn’t always agree, he said, that’s just the way it is in business. “Some things work and others don’t, but you need to know where everyone stands on an issue to be able to make sure you are making the right decision for your community,” Burroughs said. You can’t have a strong community without knowing who the people you represent really are. “That’s why I feel these connections with the universities, schools, civic groups, are all so important. “It’s connections like these that are what sets us apart — it’s what makes us Denton.”

A WINNING HAND FOR BUSINESS
A winning hand Pipeline potential The “winning hand” metaphor is most appropriate for describing the combination of affiliates that comprise the major initiatives and services of the Denton Chamber of Commerce. Based on a long-standing perspective, we advocate that the overall community usually benefits when local businesses are prospering and growing. The Denton Chamber, through its affiliates, coordinates a year-round series of projects and events to help stimulate the area economy. Two bottom line results impact this perspective. First, businesses provide jobs. Second, businesses generate taxes, which in turn fund public schools and essential municipal services. The more diverse our businesses are, the more opportunities our citizens have for bona fide career opportunities. The size and variety of businesses directly influence the generation of ad valorem and sales tax. Thriving businesses
are more prone to grant philanthropic and charitable support. We like to think of the Denton chamber office as a convenient “one-stopshop” for responding to Burroughs inquiries from all over the world regarding prospective businesses, new residents or visitors. Volunteers plan events, both for membership functions, as well as community promotions. Much like drawing that ideal poker hand, we have all the cards necessary to sell the city, as well as promote the products and services of our 850 individual members.
Mark Burroughs chair for 2013-2014 program year Denton Chamber of Commerce
For the past 104 years, the Denton Chamber of Commerce has worked to promote and improve our community in many ways, but none more important than economic development. This economic development has come in many forms, including retention and expansion of existing businesses, encouraging new businesses and advocating for infrastructure that will foster future growth. The creation of jobs and the expansion of the tax base improve the lives of our citizens and the economic health of the region, and is a true example of the aphorism “a rising tide raises all boats.” Denton is blessed with two universities, a younger-than-average educated workforce, with available land and space to grow. Our location at the apex of Interstate 35E and Interstate 35W, and an affordable cost of living, all in addition to being a part of Texas — the economic envy of the country — places us in a unique position indeed. Denton is poised to benefit from the
northward growth of the DFW Metroplex. We will benefit as the economy continues to improve, and the I-35E expansion progresses. But our city must be prepared with Fremaux the appropriate infrastructure to attract and support these new and expanding industries. In recent years, we have had companies choose not to relocate to Denton due to the lack of natural gas service to industrial areas. These companies that could have provided good jobs, with their large capital investments, would have increased the tax base, subsequently easing the burden on individual homeowners. We currently have an opportunity to set in place a major piece of the economic development puzzle. As you may know, Denton Municipal Electric is hoping to

Fremaux build a commercial gas pipeline to our industrial area near the airport. This pipeline would service the needs of future commercial development, as well as supplement our existing industrial demand. Even though Atmos Energy services some existing industry in this area, our understanding is that industrial gas service is not their primary focus and they do not guarantee gas service to industrial users. What this means is that during times of high residential demand, industrial users are subject to being curtailed. These curtailments are expensive to both our employers and their employees alike, and are therefore costly to Denton. The greatest cost to Denton, however, is that prospective industries will not locate
here without an adequate and uninterrupted supply of natural gas. It is not often that a city has an opportunity to execute a project that has the economic development potential that this natural gas pipeline does. This development can be the seed planted that will bear fruit for Denton and its residents for decades to come. The Denton chamber board has chosen to support this initiative and we urge both our membership and the citizens to support it as well.

Testimonial What has been your involvement with the Denton Chamber of Commerce and how has it shaped your personal and/or professional development? When Tonya and I bought Denton Depot in 2008 we decided the first thing to do was join the chamber and get involved. I would attend the ribbon cuttings and while doing so I met a tremendous amount of our fellow business owners, managers and key employees. I was fortunate to have participated and graduated from the Leadership Denton program which is a chamber function. This involvement has led to many open doors within the community and fellow businesses. We not only made business friends/clients but close personal friends as well. We attended most all of the monthly mixers, luncheons and banquets which also led to new relationships among the chamber membership. I have had the privilege to serve on the chamber executive board for the past 3 years and now honored to say the incoming board chair elect for our new year beginning April 2013. Both Tonya and I had careers in the corporate world at executive levels and are happy and proud to serve and utilize those skills for the best interest of our business the chamber and community! In what ways do you consider that the Denton Chamber of Commerce impacts the local business community? The Denton Chamber of Commerce is the champion and main advocate for the business community in our municipality. When you have a healthy and thriving business environment most likely the community itself is a great place to raise a family and experience a positive lifestyle. Take a look at the high quality of our schools, universities, parks, hospitals, police and fire departments. These Denton assets would not be possible if our business enterprises were not expanding! We are very blessed to own a business here in Denton and be a member of the Denton Chamber of Commerce. Larry Parker, owner of Denton Depot
Membership benefits What do I get for my membership? The natural expectation of most people is to ask, “What do we get for our membership investment in the Denton Chamber of Commerce?” By design, the chamber’s primary focus is to promote the Denton area, while addressing and supporting the needs of the local business community in general. Our overall, year-round efforts ultimately support just about anyone trying to do business in Denton. Attracting and retaining larger manufacturing and distribution facilities help maintain career opportunities, which flow back to our retailers in terms of a dependable customer source. Manufacturing and distribution facilities also equate to a significant property tax base, thus providing most of our municipal services and funding for public schools. Having more companies means more career opportunities. Having more
employed residents translates to disposable income spent in local stores, resulting in sales tax revenue, and a better selection of items. Again, there is a Carpenter direct correlation between sales tax collected and public safety and municipal services provided in Denton. The Internal Revenue Service views a chamber membership investment as “advertising,” or “promotion” and, subsequently, deductible as a business expense. So, how do we help our members justify that we are in fact “advertising” and “promoting” their company? By virtue of our office serving as an acknowledged “front door to the community,” we respond to all types of information requests from potential new and current residents, visitors and prospective businesses. Carpenter For the 12 months ending Dec. 31, 2012, our staff distributed 63,436 pieces of printed materials. Our most popular items are our Destination Denton community resource magazine, and, our local street map. Both are supported by exclusive chamber member advertising. We had 2,673 individuals from non-Denton zip codes who signed our guest book during this period. The materials they took with them included 1,806 chamber member publications and 717 visitor-oriented items. Eighty-six sought information about our Small Business Development Center, and 64 inquired about relocation of a business to Denton. The Denton chamber’s website averaged 3,443 visits per month, totaling more than 41,000 for the year. This data is tracked by Google Analytics. Our membership listings, which basically serve as a business directory, received 43 percent of 112,311 total page views. According to ChamberMaster database tracking, 88 percent of the searches on the chamber’s membership listings were trying to find local businesses by specific category.
Our data base manager, ChamberMaster, also has the capabilities to track referrals we make on behalf of individual chamber members. As an added benefit, members have access to their chamber website listings to update and customize their own accounts, as well as to promote special products and services. The diversity of our membership requires us to provide a variety of different opportunities for involvement. All types of general membership events are held every month, including casual mixers to exchange promotional materials, trade shows, workshops addressing small business needs, and structured luncheon meetings at which pertinent local issues are featured. At the risk of sounding like a clichĂŠ, when it’s all said and done, business owners ultimately get out of the chamber what they put into it. I like to think our chamber provides more than enough “itâ€? in which to make a productive investment. Chuck Carpenter, president Denton Chamber of Commerce
What has been your involvement with the Denton Chamber of Commerce and how has it shaped your personal and/or professional development? I joined the Chamber shortly after joining NORTHSTAR BANK. Tony Clark believed it was an important membership within our community. It was a great way for me to meet and get to know the business community. Soon thereafter I applied and was accepted into the Leadership Denton Class of 2002. This is where the appreciation for the chamber, our business community, schools, universities and people all came together for me. That experience catapulted me into wanting to be more a part of this great organization. I was privileged enough to serve on the board of directors for many years and be involved in seeing the work and passion for providing opportunities for growth within our business community. From meeting wonderful business people, to seeing how the economic development of our city evolves, to watching non-profits serve others, to watching small business owners invest their time and membership into growing their businesses — you truly get an overview of everything by participating in the Denton Chamber of Commerce. In what ways do you consider that the Denton Chamber of Commerce impacts the local business community? Like anything, your time and participation in this organization comes back to you tenfold. You see local businesses support other local businesses and realize we are all here to make our community and our businesses better by working together. The Denton Chamber of Commerce provides a forum for all of that to happen, and for the success to be visible as we watch Denton grow. Economic Development: 2012 in review
As I look back at our economic development activity in 2012, it was a slower than usual year for us. I attribute that to two reasons: One, during a presidential election year, projects typically slow down until after inauguration day, coupled with worries about the “fiscal cliff” and two, Denton doesn’t have the existing building space large enough to meet companies’ requested needs. As a result of the economic downturn a few years ago, capital for projects has become more difficult to attain. Therefore, more companies are eager to purchase existing buildings rather than build new ones. According to the leads our office received in this last fiscal year, the average square footage requested is 200,430. Until developers are willing to build more industrial spec space in Denton, I’m afraid we may continue to qualify for fewer large projects heading into 2013.
On a brighter note, we have seen projects that we worked on in the past year or two come to fruition. Here are a few: P e e r l e s s Manufacturing broke Dickson ground on its new $9 million, 80,000-square-foot facility expandable to 487,000 square feet. Peerless plans to employ 160. Labinal is in the process of occupying an existing 180,000-square-foot facility to move its 700-employee operation from Corinth. The Target Corporation is nearing completion of its 400,000-square-foot state-of-the-art distribution facility for its perishable and frozen foods. Target plans to begin operations in the new facility by the end of the first quarter of 2013. Construction on the north side of Rayzor Ranch Town Center continues to near completion. Plans are to begin con-
struction in this year on the south side of the 412-acre mixed-use development. The Denton Airport Branding Task Force and the Denton Economic Development Partnership Board voted to recommend to the city council that the Denton airport be called the Denton Enterprise Airport with the branding tagline of “DFW access. Extraordinary business.” An anthem was also selected and is in the process for the city council’s approval. Seventy-three leads were received and three site visits were conducted. As the Denton chamber’s economic development department is charged with marketing the city of Denton for business recruitment, we participated in the following activities to get Denton on real estate and site location consultants’ radars for future projects: TexasOne exhibit at the Society of Automotive Engineers show in Detroit, Mich., where Peterbilt was featured in the
booth. North Texas Commission Aviation Marketing Committee booth at the National Business Aviation Association trade show in Las Vegas. Denton exhibit at the North Texas Commercial Area Realtors show in Dallas. Site Selector Guild conference in Orlando. Met with five site location consultants from the following companies while in Colorado: McCallum Sweeney, KPMG, Foote Consulting Group, Silverlode Consulting Group and Ernst & Young. TexasOne Business Recruitment Mission to New York and met with the following site location companies: Ernst & Young, ADP, Atlas Insight, Ryan Construction, Cushman & Wakefield and Grubb & Ellis.

Denton County Days offer visibility
From the perspective of the Denton Chamber of Commerce, state government is a major industry, providing thousands of local career opportunities and giving the city positive visibility within the mass of faceless municipalities that make up the greater Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. During the 82nd Session of the Texas Legislature in 2011, five different teams with individuals from the Denton chamber board, Denton City Council, the Denton Independent School District Board of Trustees and representatives from both Texas Woman’s University and the University of North Texas made nearly 30 personal, pre-assigned visits with key individual state legislators. Their primary purpose was to deliver and discuss joint position statements advocating support for Denton-based public entities. This process is conducted in conjunc-
“So Denton County Days is a good opportunity for people to pay a close personal visit, not only to our legislators but a legislator who chairs a committee on a particular bill they have an interest in.” — Denton County Judge Mary Horn
tion with a two-day event, organized by the Denton Chamber of Commerce every other year during the regular session of the Texas Legislature. Denton County Days in Austin is designed to acquaint the state’s top elected decision makers and key agency offi-
cials with the many assets of the county, and heighten the overall image and visibility of the North Texas area. “Everybody has concerns that are alike, like we’re all concerned about transportation, economic development…but then each jurisdiction has specifics that they want to talk to legislators about — something that pertains just to their area,” said Denton County Judge Mary Horn. “So Denton County Days is a good opportunity for people to pay a personal visit, not only to our legislators but a legislator who chairs a committee on a particular bill they have an interest in.” A joint project of the chambers of commerce of Denton County since 1987, the ultimate intent is to provide more exposure for area legislators, thus helping them to better represent the needs of their particular constituents. More than 200 traveled to Austin in February for the 2013 Denton County
Day events, with the Denton chamber teams once again conveying local needs and expectations. In addition to a reception to which the entire legislature was invited, the six members of the Denton County state legislative delegation — including senators Jane Nelson and Craig Estes, along with state representatives Myra Crownover, Tan Parker, Pat Fallon and Ron Simmons — also made special presentations at a separate briefing. The Denton County state legislative delegation has been tentatively scheduled to participate in a post session briefing in September at the Club in Apogee Stadium at the University of North Texas. The meeting is open to the public. “It will be an opportunity for our Denton County delegation to meet with the same people who went down to Denton County Days and legislators, who can come back and talk about what went on,” Horn said.

LEAD - Lead, Evolve, Advocate and Develop
The Denton Chamber of Commerce officially kicked off LEAD — Lead, Evolve, Advocate and Develop — on June 1, 2011. The program, which was presented during the chamber’s annual banquet, consists of three coalitions — host, outreach, and welcome coalitions — tasked with specific functions and goals. The host coalition is tasked with event hosting and set-ups, obtaining sponsorships and door prizes and promotes chamber events. The outreach coalition pays visits to current members and conducts renewal courtesy calls. The welcome coalition conducts newmember orientations, officiates at ribbon cuttings, invites new and existing members to events and provides courtesy calls to new members. Larry Parker with Denton Depot, incoming chair-elect of the board who also will oversee membership develop-
ment division for the 2013-2014 program year, said the reason the chamber began the LEAD program was to assist the chamber’s small staff. “A staff member at the time found this program from various chambers of commerce and replicated it,” Parker said. “It is much more involved [for the volunteers]. They become the public relations arm of the chamber of commerce.” Since inception, 46 delegates have been part of the program, Parker said. All delegates are expected to attend ribbon cutting celebrations and build relationships with potential new members, according to a program brochure. In order to become part of LEAD, members must be the owner or an employee of a business that is a member of the Denton Chamber of Commerce for a minimum of six months prior to the application date, Parker said. LEAD participants must also be members in “good standing” and must be will-
ing and able to make a one-year commitment to the program. øThey are required to attend the annual LEAD retreat and complete an annual application process. The fee to become a participant is $25. The application period is usually each February, and delegates are officially announced in March of the new year. Once LEAD delegates are selected, their term begins April 1 to finish March 31 of the following year. The LEAD program is a component of the membership division of the Denton Chamber of Commerce. Amanda Crocker, marketing director with the Denton Record-Chronicle, was named LEAD Program Chair for the 2013-2014 year. ‘A game changer’
Bringing a proposed hotel and convention center to Denton could be a “game changer, said Kim Phillips, vice president of the Denton Chamber of Commerce. With the amount of business brought on by Denton’s two universities, industrial area, business community and airport, there’s a lot of traffic that comes through the city, and there’s demand for a facility like the proposed hotel and convention center, Phillips said. There also are many people who stay outside Denton or take their events to other cities because the space for their needse isn’t currently available in Denton, she said. “This is going to solve a lot of that, Phillips said of the proposed hotel and convention center. “The types of business that would be attracted into [such] a facility will be many. Springfield, Mo.-based O’Reilly Hospitality Management, LLC, has proposed a public-private partnership with Denton to build the project on land
owned by the University of North Texas. A preliminary agreement states that UNT would lease the land to the developer and city. The city intends to build and own the convention center and lease the convention center to the developer for management and operation. The developer will build the hotel and restaurant. Developers are hopeful a development agreement will be finalized soon. “We’re extremely excited to get the project started, said Tim O’Reilly, managing member and chief executive officer for O’Reilly Hospitality Management. According to figures recently presented by O’Reilly Hospitality Management, the proposed convention center is projected to include 120,000 square feet, and the 250,000-square-foot Embassy Suites hotel space is projected to have 318 rooms. The facility would accommodate 2,000 people theater-style or 1,200 for

Convention receptions, and there’s 37,000 square feet for open exposition space. The total project, the hotel convention center and restaurant included, is projected to sit on 13.5 acres of land with 745 parking spaces and total 414,000 square feet, according to a presentation presented by the city and O’Reilly Hospitality Management. The 8,000-square-foot Houlihan’s Restaurant and Bar is projected to have 290 seats and an outdoor patio that overlooks UNT’s Apogee Stadium. Projected cost for the total project is $85 million. The projected annual economic impact for Denton would total $47.2 million and $1.18 billion over a 25-year span, according to the developer’s presentation. Annual employment impact is projected at 508 and 770 over 25 years, the presentation noted. During the two years of construction, it’s expected the project would provide 480 jobs, according to the presentation. Phillips said that of state associations meetings in Texas with an attendance of

At this point, she said, Denton is “not on their radar and that could change significantly with a project like the proposed hotel and convention center. “We just believe that it will be a very positive game changer to the landscape of Denton, Phillips said. “I think it just opens all kinds of possibilities that haven’t [existed] for Denton at this point and time.

Gas is missing link to tax base, jobs The 8,300 acres of land west of Interstate 35 West and south of U.S. Highway 380 was designated in the City of Denton’s 1999 Comprehensive Plan as the area designated for primarily industrial use. This area currently includes the Denton Enterprise Airport, the Kansas City Southern Rail line and existing major employers such as Petteril, Tetra Pak, May Day Manufacturing, Anderson Merchandisers, Target and Fastenal. Fortunately, there are still significant parcels of land available for even more capital-intensive projects that will provide career opportunities and be appraised for property taxes, and subsequently, provide municipal services and help fund public schools. The only missing component is access to additional natural gas. Existing infrastructure for gas distribution in this area is at capacity. Based on not being able to respond to prospect requests representing $1.4 billion in capital investment since 2008, the
Denton Chamber of Commerce board of directors has endorsed the referendum on the City of Denton ballot for May 11, 2013, authorizing construction of a new gas pipeline into the area. Although Denton Municipal Electric will own the pipeline, actual operation and maintenance may be contracted, nor will it exclude other natural gas companies from operating in the area. The installation will be considered a firm contract, and for industrial use only in the specifically-designated industrial area. This helps prevent curtailment of critical volume necessary to continue operations during excessively cold temperature. The Denton chamber board views this referendum as a valuable business retention and sales benefit. All chamber members are encouraged to vote in favor of authorizing the City of Denton, through DME, to create a gas utility in the designated area west of I-35W and U.S. 380.

A WINNING HAND FOR BUSINESS
Testimonial What has been your involvement with the Denton Chamber of Commerce and how has it shaped your personal and/or professional development?
Money key to new prospects
When it comes to attracting new business to town — especially the kind that can make the most of the educated work force coming out of two universities, the community college and Denton ISD — it still comes down to money. Chuck Carpenter, president of the Denton Chamber of Commerce, said the city has a lot to offer companies searching for the best places to locate their plants and offices, including plenty of land. The city has been wise in its land-use plan-
ning, but most of the raw land on the west side of town needs road and utility work done before the city can even start talking about incentives. “We’ve got a lot of issues with sites that aren’t accessible, Carpenter said. “That’s when it would really be nice for 4B sales tax. You can do more creative things, infrastructure-wise. Denton doesn’t collect sales tax to use See PROSPECTS on PAGE 44

Prospects specifically for economic development, sometimes referred to as 4A or 4B sales tax. Depending on the size of the city, voters can adopt a sales tax under the Development Corporation Act of 1979. Several chapters of the Texas Local Government Code regulate municipal economic development corporations, with 4A focused on developing industries and 4B focused on developing industries and communities. But that doesn’t mean Denton can’t offer incentives. In fact, the city paid out about $1 million in incentives in 2012 from various agreements it has with new businesses that have come to town. When Denton’s new finance director, Chuck Springer, first went to work, it was in Arlington after the Texas Legislature made it possible for cities to dedicate some of their sales tax to economic development. Arlington used its sales tax to help build its new baseball stadium, The Ballpark at Arlington.
C3
During his career, he’s watched many North Texas cities attract business and development without 4A or 4B money to spend — Plano, Carrollton, Irving, to name a few, he said. Cities participating in transit systems, including DART and DCTA, don’t have sales tax going into a pot for economic development; it’s going to pay for transit. But that’s an amenity that attracts new business, Springer said. Denton also dedicates a portion of its sales tax in order to have a lower property tax rate, another selling point to attract new businesses and employers to town, Springer said. Even though Denton doesn’t have a dedicated pot of money, the city can still enter into agreements with new businesses to offer other incentives. The city’s recent agreements have sparked new retail development at Rayzor Ranch and brought oilfield services company Schlumberger to Denton in 2011. “They can waive fees — permit fees or impact fees — or rebate property taxes or sales taxes,” Springer said. “They still have a lot of flexibility.”

Branding part of strategy The Denton Chamber of Commerce is working on a branding initiative as part of its five-year strategic plan. Chuck Fremaux, chairman of the chamber’s board of directors, calls it a “self-examination process. He said it will be an introspective look at how the chamber is being presented and how it wants to be presented. In other words, the chamber is evaluating its message, he said. The chamber began working on a branding initiative about a year ago but nothing has been implemented yet, Fremaux said. The goal of the initiative is to keep members of the chamber and the business community informed about what the chamber offers, he said, adding that a unified message will be offered. “We do so much in the city, he said. Fremaux said the chamber offers many programs — such as the small business development center and Leadership Denton — that the community may not be aware of.
“What we do [as a chamber] has a big impact on what we [as a community] do today and tomorrow.

People often come to the chamber first when they are trying to learn about the city, he said, adding the chamber has participated in spurring the city’s ongoing growth. The chamber has had a hand in bringing Interstate 35 through Denton many years ago and bringing United Copper to the city, he said. “I’m a big believer in what the chamber does, he said, adding that it impacts the future businesses and economy in Denton. “What we do has a big impact on what we do today and tomorrow.

Facilities update
Chamber eyes future growth The Denton chamber has been housed in its present facility, at the corner of Parkway Street and Carroll Boulevard, since 1975. The building has gone through numerous alterations over the years in order to not only serve as the center of operations for the chamber and its affiliate organizations, but also to act as the acknowledged front door to the community. Chamber staff members respond to literally hundreds of inquiries for visitor information from prospective residents and potential new businesses from all over the world every month. Originally constructed as a single floor on columns with parking underneath, the chamber offices have been expanded as new contracted affiliates have been added. The chamber houses and administers the Denton Convention & Visitors

Bureau, the Denton Economic Development Partnership marketing office, Leadership Denton and the Small Business Development Center. The basic concept is to provide convenient “one-stop shopping for as many business services as possible, while selling the community as a good place to live, work, learn and enjoy leisure activities. Based on the general agreement that the chamber headquarters should remain near the traditional central business district, and geographically equidistant to Texas Woman’s University and the University of North Texas, in April 1996 the board of directors voted to extend the lease for its existing property through the year 2048. Part of the original ground-level entrance was converted to provide a See FACILITIES on PAGE 51

Denton chamber goes social
The Denton Chamber of Commerce has put forth consistent efforts to keep the membership informed and up to date on its initiatives and programs, including quarterly membership meetings, print publications and weekly e-mail notifications. One additional method that has been useful in furthering outreach is the use of social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter. As part of evolving marketing plans, the chamber staff looks forward to utilizing the full span of tools on such platforms as a means of recruitment of new members and engagement and retention of current members. Additionally, the chamber perceives the increased use of social media as another strategic avenue for promoting Denton. At the present time, Facebook is being utilized to promote events as well as celebrate businesses that are new to the chamber by posting updates and ribbon cutting photos. The Denton Chamber of Commerce Facebook page is also linked
to the Women in Commerce Facebook page, which is also managed by the chamber in order to increase the following of Denton women-owned businesses and expand the outreach of the Women in Commerce initiatives. With increased social networking activity, it is expected that the follower base will expand farther than that of the current membership, which will lead into a new market of businesses that may be recruited for membership. Part of this activity may include video footage of high-profile events, as well as stories about the member businesses and their successes. Building a social media campaign takes time, dedication and creativity. The Denton Chamber of Commerce is dedicated to further pursuing the possibilities in order to stay in tune with the rapidly growing and evolving Denton business climate.

Testimonial What has been your involvement with the Denton Chamber of Commerce and how has it shaped your personal and/or professional development? As a longtime business professional, I have seen first hand the value of the chamber in providing its members with tools to help them be successful. These range from educational programs that help to enhance or improve knowledge, advocacy on policies and issues at all levels, networking opportunities and visibility. As a member of the chamber’s board of directors and executive committee, my involvement and representation of Texas Woman’s University provide an opportunity to meet other people and learn about other industries, and an opportunity to share what my business is doing. It’s also another way to give back. Seeing the growth of the region and the chamber’s response to providing meaningful programs is very positive. Texas Woman’s University shares in this excitement as we’ve seen our university grow by more than 85 percent in the past 10 years. TWU is a member of the Denton Chamber of Commerce and provides volunteers at all levels to support its programs. In what ways do you consider that the Denton Chamber of Commerce impacts the local business community? The Denton Chamber of Commerce is the front door to the community. You are hearing this more and more. We invite the world to Denton through our Convention & Visitors Bureau and through the partnership between the city and the chamber to recruit new businesses. The chamber also is there for all our existing businesses, large or small. The chamber consistently seeks to provide programs that are relevant and timely, and calls on business expertise from both TWU and UNT. The chamber is there to provide a voice of leadership and advocacy when a single business may be unable to do so. TWU is proud to be a part of this important community organization. Sharon Venable, assistant to the chancellor Texas Woman’s University C3

Facilities manned visitor information center in 1987. The lower floor was totally enclosed in 1997, which tripled conference room space, added new offices for the Convention & Visitors Bureau and a fullservice kitchen. An off-site parking lot was added on property purchased north of the existing building, at Congress Street and Carroll Boulevard, in 1998. Part of the upper floor was remodeled in 1999 to provide a separate, dedicated economic development briefing center. Most of these expansions and improvements were based on a four-point building plan that was adopted by the board of directors in 1995. The plan still proposes improved access to the second floor, and additional reconfigurations to allow for more meeting space and new staff to support government relations and the Leadership Denton program. sidered. The 2011-12 Leadership Denton class project focused on a proposal for additional visitor centers, as well as a Denton Store model that primarily features local products and artists. Another possible influence on the present chamber building would be the construction of a legitimate convention center. Meeting and events sales offices, presently housed at the chamber building, would ultimately need to be expanded and located at the convention center.
