St. PatrickÂ’s Day, March 17th, is the day that people everywhere wear green. Born in Great Britain during the time of the Roman Empire, St. Patrick was kidnapped and sold into slavery in Ireland where he worked as a shepherd. He fled to France but eventually returned to Ireland as a missionary. He is the patron saint of Ireland.

The Blarney Stone is a rock slab set in the wall of the Blarney Castle tower in the village of Blarney. According to legend, an old woman cast a spell on the stone to reward a king who had saved her from drowning. Kissing the stone gave the king the ability to speak sweetly and convincingly. Kissing the stone is not an easy task, because it is difficult to reach. Anyone who wants to try has to lie on his or her back, bend backwards and downwards, and hold on to iron bars for support. It is said that those who kiss the Blarney Stone are given the hjgu!pg!hbc, or Blarney: The skill to get anyone to do what he or she wants. This is persuasive talk!

Denton ISD Update District providing transition meetings for fifth-graders The transition from elementary school to middle school is one of the most important in a student’s education. From changes in academic schedules to a sudden growth in number of classmates in the same grade, everything is different for students leaving the comfortable surroundings they’ve known for the past six years and entering a new, “big” school! Denton Independent School District teachers and administrators have always been keen on making the switch from fifth to sixth grade a smooth one, offering a variety of initiatives for parents and students. Perhaps the most important is the annual fifth-grade transition meeting, tentatively scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Monday, May 2, at all five of the district’s middle schools. The purpose is to help parents and their fifth graders learn more about middle school programs. The event features teachers, counselors and school administrators on hand to answer parent and student questions or concerns, while also showcasing clubs, organizations, fine arts opportunities and athletic options for students available on each campus. McMath Middle School added a new wrinkle for its incoming sixth graders this year – a question-andanswer session with eighth-grade students at its feeder campuses. The innovative approach allowed fifth-graders at Lee Elementary to share their concerns about that change with Students in McMath’s GOAL (Guys Operating As Leaders) and GLO (Girls Leading Others) programs recently visited Lee to talk about their experiences on adjusting to life in middle school and offered tips on making an easier transition. The eighth-grade boys and girls shared their own successes and failures in middle school, giving the Lee fifth graders a personal account of that transition. “It was interesting to hear their stories,” said Saul Campuzano, a fifth-grader at Lee. “It made me

Francisco Romero, an eighth-grade student at McMath Middle School, addresses a group of fifth-graders at Lee Elementary including (clockwise from left) Ben Alvarez, Christian Hernandez, Ark Soto and Abel Sanchez. Romero and several other McMath students in the GOAL program held a question-and-answer session with Lee fifthgraders discussing the transition to middle school. Photos courtesy of the Denton school district think about what I’m doing right now and if that’s helping me in the future. I know I don’t want to be getting in trouble at McMath. I want to be a leader just like them.” Approximately 100 fifth graders attended the session with the majority taking advantage to ask questions about what middle school is all about when each eighth-grader led an informal group discussion on making the

adjustments. Questions ranged from what it’s like to have a “bunch of teachers” instead of just one to what kind of “specials” or electives are the best to take and most fun. Seeing many of her current students actively engaged and excited about going to middle school was a treat for Dr. Laura Rodriguez, Lee’s principal. Getting a chance to visit with some of her former students and get a first-hand account of how

they’ve adjusted since leaving elementary school was an added bonus. “You can’t begin to describe how I feel about this,” Mrs. Rodriguez said. “A lot of our students don’t know what to expect or how to react at that next level, so I think this has helped open their eyes and see that kids just like them made the transition and are successful in the classroom and leaders in the

school.” McMath students held a similar session with fifth-graders at Borman Elementary and may expand the experience for its other feeder elementary campuses, Principal Dr. Debbie Nobles said. Until then, parents are encouraged to take advantage of the fifth-grade transition meeting and call their feeder middle school if they have questions.
