Brave Combo teams with orchestra J

ust when you think you’ve heard it all, Brave Combo comes along and does something different, yet again. This time, the Denton-based nuclear polka band teams up with members of the Mesquite Symphony Orchestra, performing tunes from their collaborative recording, Symphonic Polkas. The one-night engagement takes place at 9

p.m. Saturday at the Sons of Hermann Hall, 3414 Elm St. in Dallas. The concert features Brave Combo, and the orchestra will perform with the band during the first set. The arrangements are “designed to be Brave Combo with a big sound stage behind it,” said Roger Gilliam, conductor of the Mesquite Symphony

Orchestra. The addition of the orchestra instruments “adds a dimension of sound to the Brave Combo experience, especially on stage,” Gilliam said. “Sons of Hermann Hall is one of the great venues around here,” he added. “It’s a cool space with lots of wood, so you’re not dancing on concrete.” The collaborative CD can be

Anonymous souls confess secrets to Web site founder

he blog PostSecret invites people to anonymously share their confessions with the world. Creator Frank Warren, who’s speaking at the University of North Texas on April 8, has turned postcards people send him with their secrets on them into several books, including Lifetime of Secrets: A PostSecret Book and PostSecret: Confessions of Life, Death, and God. Tickets for the event are sold out, but the university will have a viewing room with a projector set up for those who don’t have tickets. ith an imaginary friend like Mr. Marmalade, 4-year-old Lucy doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t need any enemies. Sundown Collaborative Theatre recovers from a stint at the WaterTower Theatreâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Out of the Loop Festival by staging a play with rather sharp teeth. The Denton-based theater company opens the black comedy Mr. Marmalade today at Texas Womanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s University Redbud Theatre Complex. Noah Haidleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s play follows Lucy (Tashina Richardson), a tot who has problem: the title character. The imaginary Mr. Marmalade (Nick Caldwell) assaults his personal assistant, abuses cocaine and enjoys a steady stream of pornography.

This year’s fundraiser, dubbed the Cherry Blossom Ball, will be held on the evening of April 17 at Texas Woman’s University’s Hubbard Hall, which will be transformed into a festive Japanese garden, complete with a pagoda, waterfalls and cherry blossoms. Musical entertainment will be featured in three different rooms for the guests’ dancing and dining pleasure. The everelegant Bob Rogers will tickle the ivories in the Origami Room; Tetra, featuring vocalist Shilah Phillips, will serenade guests in the Saki Lounge; and Think Big and the Bulletproof Brass Band will return this year to perform in the “techno party” at Club Tokyo. A cash bar will be open throughout the evening, and complimentary parking will be available. The event’s raffle prize will be a choice between a 14-karat white gold, 5.6-carat weight diamond tennis bracelet, valued at $6,000, or a yellow gold and diamond tennis bracelet with custom-made matching earrings, donated by First People’s Jewelers. The film follows the cultural transition for young Sy, as he is known, but it seems so interested in celebrating his opportunity that fails to offer sufficient insight into his background outside of dance. Although the story loses some momentum in the second half, it remains a taut and stylish mystery with a fascinating lead character at its center. Rapace marks herself as a performer to watch. Save the turtles must happen to somebody. For it’s only with such extreme contrivances can the dreaded Sparks deliver his trademark tear-filled ending. The Last Song marks not only the latest treacly offering from “novelist” Sparks, but it also — and more important, commercially — sees Miley Cyrus, of Hannah Montana fame, branching out into more serious fare. The coupling of Sparks and Cyrus proves deadly for director Julie Anne Robinson, a TV veteran fighting but falling under these twin perils. In Sparks’ routine, predictably predictable screenplay,

co-written by Jeff Van Wie, New York City natives Veronica “Ronnie” Miller (Cyrus) and her younger brother Jonah (Bobby Coleman) visit their father Steve (Greg Kinnear) for the summer at his seaside house in the South. She rejects but then falls for picture-perfect local boy Will (Liam Hemsworth). She also fights with her father before rediscovering her affinity for her neglected piano skills.
