local coed junior roller derby league stages its first tournament on Sat-
urday. The Rolling Rebellion, a junior roller derby league, will host the first “Spring Fling” tournament at the House of Quad rink in Denton. Roller derby is a fast-growing full-contact sport. The derby athletes — who are ages 4 to 17 1/2 — will go up against the Houston Junior Roller Derby, the Roller City Rink Ratz from Wichita, Kansas, and the Texas Rollergirls Junior League.

Junie B. Jones is starting first grade, and her life is hardly simple.
In the upcoming musical presented by the Artisan Children’s Theatre in Hurst, Junie B. (Katie Blanton) finds that her best friend no longer wants to be best friends, she reaches out to a new kid on the school bus and she can’t seem to make out the scribbling on the blackboard. On top of maybe needing eyeglasses, Junie B. muddles through a kickball tournament, and she gets a little help from a nice cafeteria worker. Her teacher, Mr. Scary, could be a mentor, but there’s a lot for Junie B. to learn. Will her “personal beeswax journal” help her collect her thoughts? Junie B. Jones, The Musical is based on writer Barbara Park and illustrator Denise Brunkus’ popular book series.

enton Community Market vendors — a collection of growers and makers from around the region — are preparing for the market’s sixth season. Market board members say they expect this season to be the market’s biggest and busiest yet. “At this point, we’ve got more than 100 vendors signed up for the season,” said Matthew Sallack, an illustrator and board member. “We’re expecting to pick up more after the market opens.” Opening day is at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Denton County Historical Park, 317 W. Mulberry St. Last year, 140 vendors participated in the market, with between 60 and 80 vendors setting up shop each Saturday. That was a big jump from the 15 sellers who took part in the inaugural season, Sallack said. “I think we’re all excited about the impact of the market on the community, and the impact of the community on the market,” he said. Started six years ago by founder and market coordinator Kati Trice, the community market is a weekly open-air affair. All vendors sell handmade items or hand-tended agricultural goods. The market also includes the participation of local food trucks. The market operates under a philosophical hybrid: Once approved to join the market, vendors follow a DIY and “pop-up” format. Some vendors set up their booths every week of the season, which is from April to November. Others will appear once or twice a month. And the vendors won’t necessarily set up in the same spot each week, either. The Denton County Farmers Market runs concurrently with the community market, and some farmers have booths at the market, but the farmers market is governed independently from the community market. Growers said they are itching to get their bounty to the market, but several said their offerings won’t be complete on Saturday. Amanda Austin, manager of Cardo’s Farm Project, said the community-supported agriculture program doesn’t plan to be at the first weekend of the market. “It’s still a bit early yet for harvest,” Austin said. “We do plan to be there next
The Denton Community Market operates with the help of the market board: from left, Kimberly Bien, Vicki Oppenheim, Alex shown in the gazebo at the Denton County Historical Park, where market vendors gather each Saturday from April through N week.” Although the produce is to be determined, she said the farm plans to sell lettuce mix, spinach, baby kale and maybe roots such as turnips, radishes and beets starting April 11. Austin also hopes to have vegetable seedlings for kale, chard, tomatoes and summer squash on the
second weekend of the market. Shawn Mitchell, who operates the Keller-based Frank’s Aquaponics with Frank Zarauskas, said she and Zaurauskas will be a little short on produce on Saturday. “The weather has been kind of bad,” Mitchell said. “But we’re thinking about
[bringing] eggs to sell by the dozen. We have free-range chickens, so we should have plenty of eggs.” Mitchell said she expects the Frank’s Aquaponics booth will have Frank’s Rocket Fuel — an organic mix of fertilizer Zarauskas makes himself using 10 ingredients.

“We’d heard some really good things about the market and we want to be part of the good action,” she said. “We’re also involved in the Master Gardener group there, and they seem to love the Rocket Fuel. It’s been a good spot for us.” See MARKET on 10
The DIME Store — the shop representing the Denton Independent Makers Exchange — will celebrate its second birthday with a sale and party. The event happens at 510 S. Locust St., just a few blocks from the Denton Community Market. On Friday, the DIME Store will stay open late — for the beginning of its birthday party and for First Friday, the monthly local arts mixer in
downtown Denton. Shoppers can come in afterhours — from 6 to 9 p.m. — on Friday to make a free craft and drink free sangria. A maker will help shoppers craft giant pom-pom garlands. The craft is free, but it’s BYOY — bring your own yarn. If you’re short on yarn, you can pick up some for a discount at SCRAP Denton at 420 S. Bell Ave. The garland calls for a full skein of yarn. Saturday is the DIME Store’s second Backyard Bazaar, with loads of DIME makers filling the store’s backyard. Shoppers can also enjoy cupcakes, a party hat craft, a photo booth, and cookie samples from Amanda’s Cookie Cottage. Store hours will be 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., with the bazaar from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Market Mitchell said Frank’s Aquaponics has been selling through the Denton Community Market for about five years. North Texas growers talk, she said, and they recommend markets with good traffic and sound policies. On the third Saturday of the month, Mitchell said she and Zarauskas set up shop at a Fort Worth market. Ron Plis runs Tierra Verde Farm, located between Valley View and Gainesville. Like Mitchell, he said this Saturday’s market won’t be as bountiful as he’d like. “Well, the veggies are in limbo because the weather has been bad. If it’s not a freeze, it’s raining,” Plis said of the North Texas midwinter and spring. A hailstorm hit parts of Interstate 35W about two hours after Plis reported the farm’s plans for the market’s opening day. Tierra Verde sells free-range eggs collected from Ameraucana, Rhode Island red, red and black star hens. “We’ll have a lot of canned green tomatoes. Like green tomato chutney, relish and marmalade,” Plis said. Plis said previous seasons have brought compliments from regulars who appreciate Tierra Verde’s green tomato marmalade. “Most marmalade is very sweet,” he said. “This is much less sweet, but it has some citrus peels, like most marmalade. Everybody seems to like that it’s

Home goods, art, soap and locally grown produce can all be found at the Denton Community Market. less sweet. I like this on toast and stuff.” Plis’ daughter will have bacon cheddar scones, a popular item from past community market seasons. “She alternates a bread or a cookie with that each week,” Plis said. “And she makes goat milk soap.” Tierra Verde joined the Denton Community Market in the midseason of 2012, he said. “No. 1, we went to sell our products,” Plis said. “But really,
it’s become like a family there. We just like going up there. We look forward to it.” Sallack joined the leadership of the community market after becoming a vendor. Sallack, whose illustration is on the cover of today’s Denton Time, makes handmade stuffed toys — huggable creatures borrowed from a children’s book he expects to self-publish later this year. He also sells his illustrations as prints and on note cards.
“I like that you’re not in the same spot each week as a vendor,” Sallack said. “You get to know the other vendors, and you get to meet more people that way.” Regular market shoppers will notice that Denton County has dug up part of the lot where the market has been held, creating more green space so that families and shoppers can sit and dine, or watch one of the bands booked to play that day by DentonRadio.com.

‘Furious 7’ goes into overdrive to please fans By Sandy Cohen AP Entertainment Writer
Fast-moving fight scenes, outrageous auto antics and a sprinkling of ridiculous one-liners make Furious 7 a campy, crowd-pleasing escape. Never mind that the film repeatedly presents the impossible — a muscle car attacks an airborne helicopter — fans of the franchise know to suspend disbelief at the door. With nonstop action from start to finish, it’s easy — if a bit exhausting — to go along for the high-speed ride. Reality intrudes at the end: The film is dedicated to Paul Walker, who died in a car crash in 2013, and concludes with a montage of images of the actor from his five previous Fast and Furious appearances. Walker’s brothers acted as stand-ins and special effects were used to

At one point, Roman (Tyrese Gibson) asks Brian (Walker) to promise their team won’t face any more funerals. When Brian replies, “Just one more,” he’s referring to that of the film’s villain (Jason Statham), but one can’t help but think of the actor’s own accidental death. Another scene shows Brian telling wife Mia (Jordana Brewster) that if she doesn’t hear from him after the crew’s latest mission, she should “move on.” It almost feels like a message to his co-stars. Like its predecessors, the seventh installment of the hit franchise features a multicultural
cast, international settings and a dazzling array of cars, including to American muscle cars, and the $3.5 million Lykan Hypersport from Dubai-based W Motors. Only seven such vehicles exist. (No Lykan Hypersports were harmed during the making of the film.) The story is just a framework for car chases and fight scenes. Dom (Vin Diesel) and his crew are acclimating to life on the right side of the law when they’re attacked by Shaw (Statham), bent on avenging the death of his brother, killed in Fast & Furious 6. Shaw is elusive, and the crew needs help. They’re approached by secret operative Mr. Nobody (a smiling and smarmy Kurt Russell), who promises to aid in taking out Shaw if Dom’s crew can secure a breakthrough tracking device for the U.S. gov-
ernment. Meanwhile, a group of mercenaries, led by an underused Djimon Honsou, is also willing to kill for the tracking device, which can locate anyone on the globe by hacking into myriad digital networks. Directed by James Wan (Saw, Insidious), Furious 7 scores with unprecedented car stunts. A cargo plane drops various parachute-equipped cars onto a curving road in the Caucasus Mountains. Amazingly, all the cars land upright where they are supposed to. Another awesome sequence
shows a sports car crashing through glass windows as it jumps from skyscraper to skyscraper in Abu Dhabi. When the characters aren’t in their cars, they’re fist-fighting, and Wan’s shooting style makes those scenes appear illuminated by strobe light. Even Letty (Michelle Rodriguez), the lone female driver on the crew, throws blows — in a gown and heels — battling an all-woman security team led by MMA fighter Ronda Rousey. Most of the funny comes from security agent Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson), with lines like, “Daddy’s got to go to work,” after which he busts his arm out of a plaster cast, Hulk-style, just by flexing. It all adds up to an over-thetop escapist romp, which is exactly what fans expect.
Insurgent takes place in a virtual reality in which Tris (Shailene Woodley) frequently faces various simulation challenges. The plot progresses in a repetitive cycle of escapes, surrenders and rescues. The result is a bigger, glossier and bettermade action film with less embarrassing fight choreography, but any appeal still depends entirely on the
talent of its cast. Directed by Robert Schwentke (R.I.P.D.). With Theo James, Ansel Elgort, Jai Courtney and the excellent Miles Teller. Rated PG-13, 118 minutes. — The Associated Press McFarland USA ( ★ ★) Hotheaded high school football coach Jim White (Kevin Costner) and his family move to the San Joaquin Valley from Boise,
Idaho, with his wife (Maria Bello) and daughters (Morgan Saylor and Elsie Fisher). Jim doesn’t last long as assistant football coach, but he notices that what these kids lack in tackling talent, they make up for in speed. He assembles seven boys into a cross country team and grooms them for glory. Directed by Niki Caro (Whale Rider, North Country). Rated
