In search of art’s value ‘Modest Proposal’ takes sledgehammer to PowerPoint’s stronghold innesota-based dance company Black Label Movement and Science magazine correspondent John Bohannon will perform A Modest Proposal at 8 p.m. April 10 as part of the Mary Jo and V. Lane Rawlins Fine Arts Series. The performance will be in the University of North Texas Auditorium Building, 1401 W. Hickory St. Choreographer Carl Flink, Black Label Movement’s artistic director, said the event is a mixture of a TED talk and
dance experience. It will include a contemporary dance movement called “Lost Lullabies” and hopefully time for a question-and-answer session, he said. TED is a popular network that brings ideas and innovations in technology, entertainment and design into a common space. A Modest Proposal was first presented at the 2011 TEDxBrussels in Belgium and is inspired by the 1792 essay by Jonathan Swift. A video of the performance went viral online and
has been viewed more than 1.6 million times. The focus of the performance is to create dialogue about collaboration between dance and science, which people don’t normally think of putting together, Flink said. The piece itself involves three levels, he said. It touches on the value of artists and scientists coming together “to enrich one another’s levels.” It also looks at alternatives to PowerPoint presentations and asks whether ideas can be presented
with creative alternatives such as dance rather than overuse PowerPoint. Unlike Swift’s essay, which suggest poor children be sold to the wealthy as food, this interpretation of A Modest Proposal makes the analogy that artists are considered unnecessary and of no use, but suggests to audiences that artists be valued and used to present ideas and get information across. “I hope that they’ll see ... that our company is a very strong group of performers,” Flink

‘Dark Night’ well spent Mathus brings altar, bar together in latest record By Lucinda Breeding Staff Writer cbreeding@dentonrc.com
imbo Mathus stayed close to his Mississippi home when he crafted Dark Night of the Soul, his latest release with his band, the Tri-State Coalition. The record is a swamp-rock soundtrack, shooting the ache of Delta blues into a well-used vein of raging jukejoint rock. When it came to the poetry through the 12 tracks on the record, Mathus went all around the world, there and back again, and arrived at himself. What’s the adage? Write what you know. Mathus, an alumnus of the Squirrel Nut Zippers, knows the American Deep South and himself. Even from the waning shadow of Jim Crow’s big shoulders, Mathus said one of the South’s greatest gifts to the country is found in its hymnals, its roadside taverns and recording studios. “The South gave us folk music, the blues and rock ’n’ roll. The South is the home of Sun Records,” Mathus said. Music was never the same since. “It was like a bomb that set off and detonated over the whole world,” he said. “The music that was made by the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, Carl Perkins and Elvis — that’s all from within 60 miles from here. … The British Invasion was created by

the South, particularly in my neck of the woods.” Mathus speaks in religious language a lot in Dark Night of the Soul, which also happens to be the title of a poem by St. John of the Cross, a Spanish Roman Catholic priest and a 16th-century mystic. “I feel I’ve always been drawn to spirituality, that old wisdom of the world and the universe,” he said. “I’ve always been drawn to that because it really looks at what shapes us as humans. I’m always amazed at how little we know, but yet we walk around like we know everything.” The title track opens the record with a simple meditation, a musing from an old soul who has seen too much to believe that starting over doesn’t exact a catastrophic price. Mathus said Graham Hancock’s book Fingerprints of the Gods captured his imagination. The book makes the case for the existence of a civilization before the present one that was
technologically advanced and culturally rich. Mathus said it fueled his thoughts about witnessing human extinction, and the possibility of fussy, persistent intelligent life wiggling back through deep, scorched earth. “Last year — well, in 2012 and 2013 — some horrible things were happening,” he said. “There were mass murders and tsunamis. Ongoing wars, hatred, the government shutting down. “I don’t think there are beginning times and ending times,” Mathus said. “I think that life will go on, but I sense some escalation in the world. … When I think about being the last man standing, like Noah, I wonder what brought him to that point, and where does he go.” “White Angel” is a song about the power of cocaine. Mathus’ wailing guitars mark the ache of appetite at the bottom of every addiction, then come the psychedelic riffs — unexpected but right — to signal the euphoria the user chases. “Medicine” revisits addiction, this time from the presumed primacy of the user —
“fetch me” this and “get me” that. Mathus penned “Shine Like a Diamond” as an ode to his wife, Jennifer. A simple, slow crooner, the song brims with the hard-won affection of a relationship that’s gone the distance. Mathus populates Dark Night with characters who do things that wind up in local legend, and with sentiments that side-step sentimentality. Mathus likens the album to a gestation, with all the attendant anxieties, dreams and joys. He bounced 40 songs off engineerinstrumentalist Bronson Tew at Dial Back Sound, a Mississippi studio associated with Fat Possum Records. “The writing was pretty involved, pretty intense,” Mathus said. “The recording was really liberating — we just did it in a couple of days. To hear it all come to life was pretty liberating. I was able to kind of lose myself. I can thank my group and the studio, and the producer and the engineer, because they were committed to helping me do this. “I was able to let loose, and I think you can hear it. I felt like I was in a firestorm.”

Hand crafters hit a milestone on Friday. The Denton Independent Makers Exchange celebrates one year of brisk business at its first bricks-and-mortar storefront. The local shop will mark the anniversary by inviting customers to make party hats by hand and toasting the town with local beer. “The whole thing came about so organically to begin with,” said Rachel Aughtry, who shares ownership and
management of the store with Shelley Christner. “We did the [Denton] community market together and then started doing shows together. Then the shows got really big and we opened the store. The plan was just to go and do the best we could.” The DIME Store started as Etsy Denton, a collective of artists and craftsmen and women who managed their own stores online at Etsy.com, a popular and successful website that connects shoppers, artists and craftsmen from all over the world. The collective staged one-day bazaars at the Cen-

We expected it to go well.” The model is simple. A narrative unfolds about Gustave’s being left a valuable painting and the hurdles he faces in obtaining it. With Tony Revolori, Edward Norton, Tilda Swinton and Bill Murray. Rated R, 99 minutes. — Boo Allen Le Week-End (★★★1⁄2) A longmarried British couple (Jim Broadebent and Lindsay Duncan) travels to Paris for a weekend in an attempt to save their marriage and, if possible, to rekindle the spark. The bittersweet experience turns revelatory as they both face unexplored truths. The two leads help elevate Hanif Kureishi’s funny, original and compelling story, directed by Roger Michel. Rated R, 93 minutes. At the Magnolia in Dallas and the Angelika Plano. — B.A. The Unknown Known (★★★) Oscar-winning documentarian Erroll Morris sets former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld down for an extended interview with fascinating, if often infuriating, results. Rumsfeld proves slippery and evasive, yet surprisingly talkative. Morris mixes in archival footage of Rumsfeld contradicting himself while never admitting errors of any sort. He was and remains the perfectly blind politician. Rated PG-13, 103 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas and Plano. — B.A.
NOW PLAYING Breathe In (★★) Felicity Jones stars in this slight melodrama that hints and suggests of going somewhere but never does. She plays Sophie, a British exchange student who travels to upstate New York to live with Megan and Keith Reynolds (Amy Ryan and Guy Pearce). Sophie, a budding concert pianist, and Keith, a
Marvel-Disney
Oh captain, our captain Blame it on climate change, blame it on marketing patterns or blame it on the variable school year. Whatever the reason, the arrival of Captain America: The Winter Soldier signals the beginning of an everearlier summer movie season. This Captain follows up the original 2011 mega-hit about the Marvel superhero with vague superpowers. Handsome Chris Evans again steps into a role that fits him as perfectly as Iron Man fits Robert Downey Jr. And — thank goodness — Scarlett Jo-
hansson again breaks up the boys’ club by playing the dangerously multi-talented Natasha Romanoff, a.k.a. the Black Widow. The meandering screenplay from Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely uses a simple twist: The protagonist is on the run and only turns to those he trusts — even if Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) often repeats his mantra of “Trust no one.” When it looks like the agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. have been betrayed, Steve Rogers — Captain America — jumps into the middle of a web of intrigue. A suspect gathering of government officials and industry pitchmen promises complete homeland security with their huge new airships, all garishly conjured up on even larger green screens. The directors, brothers Anthony and Joe Russo, have no
trouble keeping viewers engaged. They orchestrate a succession of quick-cutting action scenes, which might have been better served with fewer closeups from cinematographer Trent Opaloch. With so much time and money obviously spent on these scenes, pulling slightly back for a better view might have helped audiences appreciate them more. Even so, the fight scenes rapidly follow one another, thrusting the good Captain against foes he had long thought conquered. It might be hard to follow some of the double- and triple-crosses, and the reappearance of long-vanquished foes, but it’s usually not too difficult to separate the good guys from the bad. To lend the film gravitas, Robert Redford plays a duplicitous Cabinet member. To light-
musician and music professor, flirt, become close, and verge on causing a scandal. And that’s about it. Co-writer and director Drake Doremus never completes a theme or draws any conclusions. Rated R, 98 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas and Plano. — B.A. Ernest & Celestine (★★★★)
Perfectly charming Oscar-nominated animated film from France based on Gabrielle Vincent’s book. A young mouse, Celestine (voiced by Pauline Brunner), contrary to her nature and against the warnings of friends, befriends a mischievous bear, Ernest (Lambert Wilson). They both come
from creatively rendered worlds run entirely by, respectively, mice and bears. Warm, inventive, funny and always beautiful film filled with impressionistic pastels. Rated PG, 80 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas and Plano. — B.A. Noah (★★★1⁄2) Old Testament fury

en the film for a very short time, Gary Shandling plays a sniveling corporate hack. Anthony Mackie contributes strong supporting work as Sam Wilson, Rogers’ eventual partner transformed into the flying Falcon. And, to give the film noted grace and beauty, Emily VanCamp and Hayley Atwell appear, doing little more than making everything look better. DIME niche market within the handmade market. We didn’t understand there was such a need for that, so we evolved to meet that.” The perks of having a bricks-and-mortar outlet for North Texas makers has been in social capital, too. “I love that we definitely have a community amongst our shoppers — they might not even know each other,” Aughtry said. “On a Saturday, there are all these people in here and it’s a really friendly atmosphere. And we built a community amongst our makers. When we were doing our shows, everyone was like ‘oh, hey, how’re you doing?’ We realized that they didn’t know one another, and we’ve known all of them for years. We realized that was kind of a failure, and that we needed to connect the makers. We’re really proud of that, because the makers know each other now, and it’s helped them grow.” The DIME Store has broadened its selection of handmade goods, developing its inventory of clothes, jewelry, furniture and home accessories. “We started off with 26 [vendors],” Christner said. “Predominantly, we’re buying wholesale in here. Now, we have work by over 40 people. It’s not quite doubled.” Christner and Aughtry have intentionally included their peers in Denton’s small businesses in their events and sales. Denton food trucks, such as the Pickled Carrot, have parked along Locust Street during Saturday sales. Christner said customers appreciate knowing that the items they buy were made by people who live in their city and their region. “To see people be so satisfied with the things we have here, their appreciation of handmade [work] … that’s gratifying,” she said. “They’ll be in here and they be like ‘I love this’ and you’ll tell them ‘I made that’ and they say ‘You did? Wow! That’s so awesome!’ To have that face-to-face with people, to know that they are finding something they love and they got to meet the maker, that’s been so special.” The shopkeepers are looking to the future with the
