Group assembles night of one-act plays by Williams By Lucinda Breeding Features Editor
Sometimes, A Streetcar Named Desire is too much Tennessee Williams. Denton Community Theatre presents a full evening of the famous Southern playwright, but in three manageable oneact plays. Bradley Speck, who pitched the idea of an evening of Williams one-acts to the company, got his wish and a chance to direct This Property Is Condemned, a wrenching story about a young girl who has to grow up too fast. Dennis Welch takes on a mere capsule of Williams in The Lady of Larkspur Lotion, the story of a woman trying to wring rent out of two deadbeat tenants. Pat Watson directs his first Denton Community Theatre project with Talk to Me Like the Rain and Let Me Listen. “When Brad told me I could pick any Tennessee Williams play I wanted, well, that was too good to pass up, Welch said. “I didn’t realize he wrote so many one-acts — he wrote something like 70. The director picked The Lady of Larkspur Lotion because of the humor. “Williams isn’t known for humor, and I think this one is a laugh riot, said Welch, who recently directed Williams’ The Night of the Iguana. “OK, the characters lead sad, dreary lives, but the play is funny. It is to me. Speck said the point of the evening is just to give audiences an experience of the American playwright’s work. The company didn’t set out to sell a theme to ticket buyers. Should push come to shove, any audience could consider this a central theme of Williams’ plays: None of us get out of a family free of the bruises of dysfunction or sins of the inherited sort. This Property Is Condemned since he was young enough to play Tom, the young boy who can’t stop asking questions. Speck said the play is much different than the 1966 film starring Robert Redford and Natalie Wood. In the local production, JeannĂŠ Dube and Drew Stone portray Willie Star and Tom, two youngsters trying to grow up in the wake of adult irresponsibility. Watson said he chose Talk to Me Like the Rain after Speck recommended it. “A lot of it has to do with life today,â€? Watson said. “There’s a guy who has all freedom to do
whatever he wants, but he can’t make it happen. Another guy has a vision for something, but he doesn’t have the freedom to do it. The three directors said short plays give them what they long for — more time for oneon-one work with the performers and room to map out a story told with no frills. “I’ve seen one-minute TV commercials that tell a whole story, Welch said. “It can be done, and done well. Tennessee Williams does it well. The actors don’t have all this time to develop these characters. They have to get in there, establish them and connect with the audience. Welch’s actors have less than 10 minutes to tell a story and deliver emotional agendas. Denton has produced more short plays in the last three years, and Speck said it’s a way to nab the patron who doesn’t like to sit for 2 1/2 hours. “That’s the way this society is going. I cut for that when I direct, he said. “My personal philosophy, though, is that you build an audience. If you do good theater, people will come see it. It doesn’t have to be short.

Arthur The sheltered heir to a billion-dollar fortune (Russell Brand) must choose between an arranged marriage that will ensure his lavish lifestyle and an uncertain future with his true love in this remake of the 1981 film. With Helen Mirren, Greta Gerwig, Jennifer Garner and Nick Nolte. Rated PG-13, 110 minutes. — Los Angeles Times Bill Cunningham New York (###) Fashion aficionados will appreciate this crowd-pleasing documentary about the fashion photographer, now in his 80s, who has made a career out of riding his bicycle and chronicling the everyday fashion trends on the streets of Manhattan. While it lacks depth in spots, the film not only chronicles his career (including his New York Times highsociety pieces), but uncovers an eccentric and obsessive man who prefers to stay behind the lens. Not rated, 84 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — Todd Jorgenson Black Death (##1/2) Horror fans might embrace this violent and somewhat loopy medieval adventure about a monk (Eddie Redmayne) and a knight (Sean Bean) trying to seek out a village of 14th-century healers during the time of the bubonic plague. Religious forces clash just as the plague causes panic among the people. The film boasts some gruesome action sequences, but takes itself too seriously as it tries to juggle spiritual loyalties and toss in a collection of assembly-line characters. Rated R, 102 minutes. At the Inwood in Dallas. — T.J. Born to Be Wild (###1/2) Heartwarming nature documentary, filmed in IMAX 3-D, tells parallel stories of animal conservation aimed at saving orphaned elephants in Kenya and orangutans in Borneo. It details the rescue and rehabilitation efforts before the creatures are released back into their natural habitat. The 3D visuals enhance the tropical scenery, and the film provides some solid ecological lessons to accompany its cute-baby-animal quotient. Narrated by Morgan Freeman. Rated G, 40 minutes. Hanna barbaric
Girl wonder shows shades of Bourne in strange flick
By Boo Allen
The attention rests not on the flimsy story but on the constant gunfights, assassinations, chases and brawls. Through it all, Wright develops otherworldly atmospherics that make everything seem fantastical, even when the blood flows. Wright has progressed enough as a director to inject minor but noticeable flourishes: odd faces, clipped dialogue, colorful characterizations and detailed insertions of animate or inanimate objects that are hard to overlook. In roles like these, actors seem interchangeable. In what is surely her oddest role since playing Bob Dylan, a perfectly entertaining Blanchett looks like Rosa Klebb but sounds like Blanche DuBois.
Winter in Wartime (###) Set in Holland in January 1945, a 14-yearold boy (Martijn Lakemeier) becomes unwittingly involved in the Dutch resistance when he helps a downed British pilot (Jamie Campbell Bower).
n the first few minutes of Hanna, a father sneaks up on his young daughter and throws her to the ground. She then jumps up and starts pounding him senseless. After that, things really start to get weird. Those opening minutes of the new thriller from director Joe Wright (Pride and Prejudice, Atonement) sound extreme. They are, but they also fail to capture the overall strangeness of this fourth film from a director who seems to enjoy changing course, both in his career and in this movie. Hanna constantly teeters on the absurd, ending up being perilously close to a 1970s nonsense thriller like, for example, Winter Kills. Within the story of CIA agents tracking each
other across the globe, and with an teenage trained killer at the center, Hanna looks like a Fellini-directed Jason Bourne flick. Seth Lochhead and David Farr’s imaginative script keeps the scenes lean and poised for action, never boxing director Wright into slowing down much or mandating breaks for lengthy narrative explanations. Instead, the near-farcical premise allows for the introduction of two, and then three, main characters before releasing them in different directions
for competing, action-oriented plot lines. Hanna (Saoirse Ronan) lives in a remote, frozen wilderness of Finland with her father (Eric Bana). There, he teaches her survival lessons of every sort but also instructs her on what she needs to know and how she should behave if and when she ever returns to civilization. Why they reside in such isolation remains vague until the day U.S. government agents take Hanna away. Once nabbed, Hanna escapes, but with CIA operative Marissa (Cate Blanchett) tracking her. Hanna lands with a traveling British family in Morocco before hopping back to Europe with them. During Hanna’s eventful odyssey, dad and Marissa battle each other, enough so that the vague story gradually comes into focus.

Hearing ‘Double’ Music draws together Detroit conductor and retired UNT composer By Ellen Ritscher Sackett Staff Writer
H
e is a famous conductor who travels the world with his scores. She is a successful composer, committed to her students as well as to her art. Their paths first crossed as professionals, then friends. They shared a passion for music, and that’s how their story began. Over a span of many years, their relationship grew. Leonard Slatkin is internationally recognized as one of the most respected American conductors of all time, and as music director, he has led several American orchestras, including the St. Louis and National symphonies, to greatness. His is a household name among orchestra musicians, and his recordings have brought classical music into the homes of many more. But this living legend is merely mortal sitting on the couch, a tad on edge as he occasionally checks his smartphone for text messages. Cindy McTee’s credentials are impressive as well. She has a number of awards and commissions for compositions that have been performed by ensembles from Texas to Japan to Australia. Churning rhythms, complicated and colorful textures, toe-tapping jazz influences and a dollop of wit distinguish her music from the rest. But the current of energy found in her compositions isn’t here as she shares a seat with her companion, draping an arm behind him on the back of the sofa. McTee has officially retired from the University of North Texas after 26 years. She left Denton for Detroit, where Slatkin has been music director for the city’s symphony since 2008. She goes back and forth between the cities,

teaching a reduced load on modified service. In her honor, the UNT Wind Symphony is celebrating her years of contributions with a concert in her honor today. Her piece Double Play is on the program. Double Play was the result of McTee winning the Detroit Symphony Orchestra’s third annual Elaine Lebenbom Memorial Award for female composers. “It was November of 2008. I got a call that I’d won the competition,” McTee said. Coincidentally, two months later, Slatkin came to Texas to conduct the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. At that time, McTee invited him to come to UNT to work with music students. “That’s when our current relationship started,” McTee said. “I was writing this piece for Detroit while getting to know Leonard. So it was all happening at the same time.”

Leonard Slatkin and Cindy McTee watch the University of North Texas Wind Symphony rehearse recently. Slatkin, conductor of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, was in Denton briefly to conduct a rehearsal of the Lone Star Wind Orchestra and to speak with university students. The UNT Wind Symphony will perform a concert tonight in honor of McTee’s retirement. The work is dedicated to him, and McTee gives him a musical nod — a brief quote from his encore piece “Fin.” Slatkin conducted the orchestra premiere of Double Play with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra in June. The Institute for Advancement of the Arts at the University of North Texas also provided support for the piece, which
received rave reviews at the first performance. The Detroit News called it “an ambitious, imaginative and altogether irresistible essay for large orchestra in two movements of head-turning brilliance,” and a Detroit Free Press critic said it was “one of the strongest new works that the conductor has introduced in
Detroit. Insiders will pick up on her wink at Charles Ives.” It was more than a wink. McTee definitely had the father of modern American music in mind when she conceived the first of Double Play’s two movements, specifically Ives’ The Unanswered Question. “It’s a piece that teaches us a lot about
the counterpoint of ideas,” says McTee, switching to professor mode. She describes The Unanswered Question as “disparate music occupying the same place,” with a “wonderful tension that happens between this very consonance, or slowly moving string section, and the argumentative winds against it. “I like the tension that happens
between opposites in music and probably in other walks of life,” she says. The version that will be performed tonight is an adaptation for wind symphony that was commissioned by a consortium of institutions and affiliated conductors led by Eugene Migliaro Corporon, director of UNT’s wind studies program. This version was pre-
miered by the Lone Star Wind Orchestra, conducted by Corporon, the ensemble’s music director, in November in Richardson. McTee said the essence of the piece is the same in both versions, just “dressed up in different clothes.” See DOUBLE on 10

“It’s the next chapter. I don’t like the word retire; it’s just the one that seems most convenient.”
Double “I basically wrote Double Play while traveling back and forth between Texas and seeing Leonard,” McTee said. “I’d carve out a weekend here, a few days there. But I learned to work in hotel rooms and on airplanes.” “I used to go in a cave, and I would not see people for a week at a time and write music. I thought that’s how it had to be,” she said. “But I’ve since discovered you can compose in the margins of the day.” McTee said she prefers to compose in complete silence, but she also enjoys having access to high-quality samples of acoustic instruments during the creative process. “I use an electronic keyboard and a computer for that and try not to let my limitations affect what I’m writing,” she said. “A piano doesn’t get you very close to a flute, but if you have the sound of a real flute … that can be kind of nice. It’s fun!” she said. “It’s also a little dangerous because then you won’t imagine what the flute might do and [won’t] bring something special to the flute. So it works both ways.” Some conductors learn their scores at the keyboard, but Slatkin reads them like books. “It’s a language. Instead of words, though, we just have these circles and lines,” he said. “I can read a score at the keyboard, but I won’t do it because I’ve got the sound of the piano in my head, and I don’t want that. I want to hear the sound of the orchestra.” Slatkin knows a vast amount of repertoire and learns new scores quickly. “A lot of it is simply a matter of experience,” he said. “If I pick up a Haydn symphony that I’ve never done or heard, I’ll immediately relate it to other Haydn symphonies that I have done. There’s not going to be too many sounds or combinations that I haven’t dealt with before.” He looks to see how the music resembles existing pieces. “Usually I’ll find a parallel and be able put it into a sonic profile in my head,” Slatkin explains.

The future Slatkin will not be at the UNT Wind Symphony performance of McTee’s piece. His obligations are to the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, which has been on strike for six months. The phone message he is waiting for is to find out whether the dispute between the musicians union and management will be resolved. As music director, he has no influence on the decision. “I have to see what the rules are,” he said. “I don’t know what I can and what I can’t do yet.” “I’m answerable to the board of directors who hired me, but I’m also the leader of the
orchestra who look to me,” he said. “What will take a long time now is the process for people to get past what has happened for the last year and to move forward, and that’s my job.” While the orchestra has been on strike, Slatkin has continued with his commitments as music director and conductor of Orchestre National de Lyon and principal guest conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, as well as guest appearances with orchestras in Madrid, Dresden, Nashville, Los Angeles, St. Louis and Chicago. While in Denton briefly, he made time to conduct a re-
hearsal of the Lone Star Wind Orchestra and to speak with UNT students about the future and the importance of music. “[Cindy and I] have an optimistic view of how the music world is going to be, but it’s tempered with the reality of our time, which is that education in the arts and music has been severely shortchanged over the last 30, 35 years,” he said. “There’s always this idea now — in my head anyway — that what I do to encourage young people and the next generations to explore music outweighs the actual performance of music to me at this point. “Not that I would want to do it full time — my life is as a per-
former — but increasingly, I find the role of education taking a greater place in my own life.” McTee’s involvement in education — or at least academia — will soon end as she completes her obligation to the university. “It’s the next chapter,” McTee said. “I don’t like the word retire; it’s just the one that seems most convenient.” “It was easier to accept the idea of change, having been unchanged for 26 years,” she said. “[Leonard] would have stolen my heart away from anywhere, anytime. You know how things happen. Timing is everything, in music and in life,” she said, adding, “We’re compatible, not just as people but as professionals. “We’re not competitive,” Slatkin said. McTee agrees. “What could be more supportive than a conductor who plays a composer’s music and a composer who has a conductor in the family?” “I refer to Cindy as my composer in residence,” Slatkin jokes. “There are compatible things and complementary things,” she said. “I’m the organizer. That’s what makes it possible for me to put a dot on a note. It’s all those little details that I guess I enjoy managing. I think Leonard thinks in larger ways; he’s kind of the big-picture guy.” What does the future hold for the two of them? “We haven’t gotten that far yet,” Slatkin said. “We’re just taking it as it comes.” But they both say the same thing. “We’re having a great time.” ELLEN RITSCHER SACKETT can be reached at 940566-6845. With Aaron Eckhart, Michelle Rodriguez, Ramon Rodriguez, Bridget Moynahan, Ne-Yo and Michael Pena. Rated PG-13, 116 minutes. — LAT Beastly (##) This predictable rendering of Beauty and the Beast, thrust into a contemporary high school setting, seems ready-made to pacify the Twilight crowd. The story has an arrogant snob (Alex Pettyfer) turned into a monstrous recluse by a spell that can only be broken if he finds true love. Then he notices a shy but pretty girl (Vanessa Hudgens) who is able to see past his scarred body and reach his heart. That should teach him a thing or two about being so shallow and conceited. Rated PG-13, 95 minutes. — T.J. Cat Run Two slackers start a private detective agency, and their first case finds them mixed up with a high-class escort embroiled in a dangerous cover-up. With Paz Vega, Christopher McDonald, Janet McTeer and Scott Mechlowicz. Rated R, 102 minutes. Rated PG, 93 minutes. Hop (##) Frenetic blend of live action and animation won’t exactly start a new Easter movie trend. It follows E.B. (voiced by Russell Brand), a rabbit who is next in line to become the Easter Bunny but would rather become a drummer in Hollywood, where he disrupts the life of an unemployed slacker (James Marsden). There are some amusing sight gags and one-liners, but the script is wildly uneven and lacks comic momentum. Rated PG, 95 minutes. — T.J. The King’s Speech (####) Colin Firth plays the Duke of York, the next King George, who, before ascending
to the crown, struggles to overcome a halting stammer. He enlists the help of an unorthodox speech therapist (Geoffrey Rush). Well-observed, thoughtful, intelligent film from director Tom Hooper, with an excellent supporting cast: Helena Bonham-Carter, Derek Jacobi, Guy Pearce and Michael Gambon. Rated R, 118 minutes. — B.A. Insidious (##1/2) Low-budget haunted-house movie from director James Wan and writer Leigh Whannell (Saw) centers on a couple (Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne) who moves into a suburban house, where their young son suddenly lapses into a coma, raising the question of whether his body is being inhabited by paranormal beings. The film shows a lot of promise in the first half, generating some effective chills, before revealing an uninspired twist that leads to a predictable conclusion. Rated R, 102 minutes. — T.J. Limitless (###) Slick if scientifically silly thriller about a fledgling writer (Bradley Cooper) who gets a new source of inspiration when he takes a pill designed to expand brain power, which leads him to fame and fortune until he realizes the side effects have caused him to make more enemies than friends. Director Neil Burger (The Illusionist) gives the film some visual flair, and the premise holds up well if it’s not taken too seriously. Also stars Robert De Niro. Rated PG-13, 104 minutes. — T.J. The Lincoln Lawyer A criminal defense attorney (Matthew McConaughey) who operates out of the back seat of a chauffeured Lincoln Town Car has his first highpaying client in years, but what appears to be a simple, lucrative case turns into a deadly game. With Marisa Tomei, Ryan Phillippe, John Leguizamo and Michael Pena. Directed by Brad Furman. Rated R, 119 minutes. — LAT Paul (##) The promising pairing of writer-stars Simon Pegg and Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead) with director Greg Mottola (Superbad) is wasted with this energetic but halfbaked science-fiction saga about a pair of comic book geeks who wind up on a road trip with an ill-tempered alien (voiced by Seth Rogen) trying to escape from the feds. It’s all setup and no payoff, as the jokes feel obvious and the alien doesn’t develop much beyond a foulmouthed version of the Great Gazoo. Rated R, 104 minutes. — T.J. Red Riding Hood In this adaptation of the classic fairy tale, a young woman is torn between two men, and her village is under siege by a werewolf with a unique connection to her. With Amanda Seyfried and Gary Oldman. Rated PG-13, 100 minutes. — LAT Sucker Punch Babydoll (Emily Browning), a young woman who’s been institutionalized against her will, retreats to a fantasy world where she is free to go wherever her mind takes her.
