enton folk musician Doug Burr is among the lineup for next month’s Untapped Fest in Fort Worth. Burr released his fifth album, Pale White Dove, on Tuesday. The local artist, whose work blends alt-country and Americana, picked up positive buzz for this latest release. The first single “White Night — Black Light” bears Burr’s signature Johny Cashesque tempos (steady like a train) and his knack for building dramatic energy. Closer to home, Burr’s album release show is slated for April 24 at Dan’s Silverleaf. Untapped Fest will be returning May 9 with a packed lineup of indie artists and plenty of beer on tap at Panther Island Pavilion in Forth Worth. OPENING FRIDAY
Not much of a ‘Ride’ Rodeo scenes thrill, unlike onscreen chemistry of stars By Sandy Cohen AP Film Critic
Ever since The Notebook made moviegoers swoon in 2004, Nicholas Sparks’ name has been synonymous with teary-eyed romance. The author’s latest novel adapted for the big screen, The Longest Ride, is no exception. The movie offers two love stories at once. But the most heartfelt affair here isn’t between its impossibly goodlooking stars. It’s shared by a couple 70 years their senior through a story told in flashbacks. Sophia (Britt Robertson) and Luke (Scott Eastwood, son of Clint) comprise the younger pair. She’s an art history student at North Carolina’s Wake Forest University with plans to work in a New York gallery. He’s a competitive bull rider trying to claim the national title. They meet when her friends persuade her to go to the rodeo. He’s in the ring, and during a stunt, his cowboy hat flies off and lands American Sniper ( ★1⁄2)★Bradley right in her lap. The Longest Ride Rated PG-13, 124 minutes. Opening Friday.
The letters, and the flashback sequences they inspire, reveal “the longest ride” has nothing to do with bull-riding: It’s about Ira and Ruth’s lifelong love. While ostensibly meant to illustrate the timeless nature of romance, the richness of this relationship makes its modern foil seem superficial by comparison. Eastwood is a fitting cowboy
— handsome and sculpted, with a touch of his dad’s famous swagger. He’s believable as a bull rider, and shows enough vulnerable charm to be a romantic leading man. The cherubic, pillow-lipped Robertson makes for a fine potential partner. She’s pretty and sweet, yet headstrong and focused when it comes to her future. Both actors are easy on the eyes, but lack the fire to be a truly convincing onscreen romance. The script by Craig Bolotin sets up each couple as sacrificing for love, but Sophia and Luke’s struggle just doesn't seem as serious. The unnecessary setting of Sophia’s sorority house doesn’t
help: Her sisters apparently exist only to wax euphoric about her date’s looks, then disappear from the narrative. “I want a cowboy,” one says. Both couples are filmed lovingly by George Tillman Jr. (Soul Food), who was inspired by his own 25-year marriage to helm the story. He also brings a gritty realism to the bull-riding shots, using a rider’s-view camera to convey the power and intensity of the animal and sport. If only the same power and intensity existed in Sophia and Luke’s love affair. Still, the film is likely to satisfy Sparks fans. And it brings something new to the romance genre: bull riding.

Rent us where we had to be on every line or anything like that. He told us to use the whole set, and left it up to us to decide where we’d go and how we’d move around.” Music director John Norine powers a rock band through score that howls, grinds, tangos and bops, all with lots of fuzzedout guitars and aggressive drums. The cast tells the story almost entirely in song. And the rock libretto drains them of considerable stamina. A nearly predatory Brynne Huffman delivers the R&Blaced “Over the Moon” with Olympic commitment as Maureen, a bisexual attention-seeker and performance artist who protests Benny’s cyber-arts studio. Josue Canales belts out the climax of “Contact” as drag queen drummer Angel. And the whole cast takes “Seasons of Love” to church with a gospelchoir big finish. Kirkley said 77 people came to auditions, and almost every role was cast from the pool of singers who tried out. Only one person, Liz J. Millea, was invited to take a part. She started the show as the choreographer of the show. She kept the choreography job and took on the role of Mimi Marquez. “I’m a Rogers and Hammerstein-trained singer,” Millea said. “South Pacific, Sound of Music, that’s my wheelhouse. This show? I have to find the notes and then learn where to put them. I didn’t do ‘Out Tonight’ in the right tempo until a few days
Denton Time Mark (Ben Brown) sings a number with Joanne (Rebecca McDonald) — the woman he lost his girlfriend to — in Denton Community Theatre’s production of “Rent.” Kristen Watson/ DRC
ago. I didn’t have it yet.” Millea learned the basics of pole dancing for the role. Her character Mimi works at a strip club to pay for her drug habit. “Now I know how strong pole dancers have to be,” she said. “Singing while you’re doing that isn’t easy.” In Rent, the characters have two chief struggles: the gentrification brought on by Benny in the form of a cyber gallery that will force them out of their home, and the struggle to find a reason to stay connected — as friends and lovers — while living with the death sentence of AIDS. The musical is set in 1989, when the treatment of HIV bought the afflicted a few more years. Rent doesn’t shy away from the cause of infection. In the song “Contact,” unprotected and
promiscuous sex is depicted as an amorphous group grope-session under a white tarp. In “Light My Candle” and “Out Tonight,” Mimi desperately searches for her lost stash of smack. “I loved the show as soon as I saw it,” Canales said. “I saw it and I immediately fell in love. I particularly fell in love with believing in the bohemian lifestyle, going against the rules, especially in the technological age. It made me realize how much I wasn’t living, and that’s kind of why I wanted to be in the show. There’s so much more to life.” The players said the musical is an ensemble show, and a demanding one vocally and emotionally. “To me, this is one of those shows where, if you aren’t completely exhausted at the end of it,
you’re not doing it right,” Huffman said. “It’s one of those shows that requires me to do something I’ve never done and that I’m not totally comfortable with. I’ve never kissed another woman onstage before. That’s what I look for in a show now — I want to do shows that push me and require me to grow.” Rebecca McDonald plays the role of Joanne, a public interest lawyer whom Mark’s ex-girlfriend Maureen left him for. The actress said her character grapples with something common to all the characters in the musical who don’t have HIV or AIDS. “They’re facing losing people left and right,” McDonald said. “They’re like Mark. They’ll survive, but they’ll have to deal with the loss of all of these friends. “I think it can be easy to for-
get that, at the beginning at the AIDS epidemic, a lot of people were dying. They weren’t living 10 or 20 years the way so many people who have the virus live today.” Davis said the cast and the fans are all drawn to the message the characters carry. “It also tells an amazing story,” he said. “And in this day and age, I definitely think we need a platform and this is one of those types of shows — no matter what year, what decade — it will mean something. I think 200 years from now, we still need a story that says that if we stick to it through the end, love will prevail.” LUCINDA BREEDING can be reached at 940-566-6877 and via Twitter at @LBreed ingDRC.

The Divergent Series: Insurgent ( ★1⁄2)★Conformity is the scourge of the Divergent series — and much of its young-adult ilk. It’s a shame that the films do so little to stray from well-worn YA paths. Based on Veronica Roth’s novels, the Divergent films are set in a walled, post-apocalyptic Chicago. Much of the drama of Insurgent takes place in a virtual reality in which Tris (Shailene Woodley) frequently faces various simulation challenges. The plot progresses in a repetitive cycle of escapes, surrenders and rescues. The result is a bigger, glossier and bettermade action film with less embarrassing fight choreography. Directed by Robert Schwentke (R.I.P.D.). With Theo James, Ansel Elgort, Jai Courtney and the excellent Miles Teller. Rated PG-13, 118 minutes. — AP
